Can I recieve SSI payments for my 7-year-old with a speech delay?

Sorry but I doubt it

WOW MAMAS. ****lets not pretend to know someone we don’t over the internet. she was upfront about her situation and asked not to be judged… there’s no harm in asking questions like this… there’s harm in the hateful, negative reactions that some of you are writing because that keeps folks who qualify from getting help they need… and honestly unless you know facts or personal experience, you probably shouldn’t be giving advice anyways… to the mama who needs the help: call your local SSI office and forget most of these rude
comments. when my twins got out of the NICU they wrote us out Neosure WIC paperwork, I didn’t think we qualified but checked in with my WIC office just in case- life is hard, there are programs to help us. we didn’t qualify anyways but I feel good knowing the facts about it now and knowing we didn’t waste money. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP and BEST WISHES to your family!!!

If all your kiddo has is a speech delay they most likely will deny you it. It’s meant for more severely disabled. It’s meant for people and kids with more severe disabilities.

If you can’t get Ssi look into your counties bureau for children with medical handicaps. They cover a variety of medical problems. We have it for my son and they cover all his therapies and many other medical issues. It is income based.

I don’t think for speech delay.

You cannot get SSI for a speech delay. Sorry.

Yes, but they do ask what exactly what you are using the money for unexpectedly, monthly maybe at a time weekly. So you can’t be using that money towards your college or anything just cause “itll help you out” They need a valid reason as to how that money is going towards your “disabled” child, and he will start receiving the benefits for himself as soon as he’s 18.

A speech delay is not a disability in most peoples eyes and to most its gonna sound like you’re looking for a cash out on your child so that you don’t have to work harder. Work for minimum wage? Change jobs. Do better for your child instead of labeling them disabled.

I did social security law for 8 years. You need to contact SSA and file an application. They will contact you if they need additional info, approve or deny you.

If your child is speech delayed why did you wait until age 7 to do anything?

I knew at age 2 I needed to get one of my children in.

This group has turned into a bunch of judgmental perfect parents that have no idea what it’s like to struggle. This mom doesn’t sound lazy. She works full time for crap money. Prob has student loans up the wazoo. I know I am paying mine off from graduating as a single mom and just finishing a couple years ago. No I don’t think her child will qualify but it’s worth a shot i guess. But to sit here calling her lazy and saying she doesn’t care about her child is outlandish. Not once in that post did I get the gist of her being lazy or not wanting to help her son improve his speech. Woman are so cruel. I thought this group was to help other moms not tear them apart when it’s something you don’t agree with.

No most definitely not. If that was the case, most children would receive benefits for a variety of delays. If there is in fact a medical reasoning behind it, then possibly. But highly unlikely.

Maybe google qualifications to collect SSI. A doctor’s exam for hearing might help too. Dr may be able to refer you to a speech specialist to make a determination of what he needs. Just a thought as that is what I would do. Maybe the father could pitch in financially?

This one is tough.
You said his speech problem isn’t that bad but you’re a struggling single mother so it sounds like you would take money from the system for something you know is not that bad. I would apply for other benefits you may qualify for instead off SSI.
I know so many moms in your situation ( even my self) who would love the extra money but I say don’t do it and I think you know you shouldn’t either.
Your 7 year old should be in a school speech program.
My daughter has had a delay since she started talking. The school had a speech teach and she does speech sessions weekly. She is now in third grade. They also offered resources outside of the school for speech that were free.

My child had full blown mental disabilities ranging from ODD, severe anxiety, depression and PTSD. I could’ve gotten him on SSI…but I don’t want him labeled as disabled. I didn’t want him leaning on a crutch bc of a label. Although the money would have helped my single mom status as well, I got a better job and worked with my child. I can’t tell you the amount of grown adults refusing to get a job, but depend on their measly SSI check simply bc they are labeled “disabled “. I did not want that for my son.

If you don’t have an established case already it will cost you time and money. Setting up drs appointments, going through therapy, getting a case going will take away from your school/work/personal time. You have to decide if it’s worth the extra effort when you could have picked up extra shifts or done a work study program at school to make some extra cash to cover up the cost difference for help. But that’s assuming you have a family member willing to help with watching the kids and not paying for daycare/after school programs.

Even if you try to get a case established it probably won’t get approved. But you never know.

I don’t think so. I know people who have children with significant disabilities that have been turned down for SSI. It never hurts to apply but I don’t think they will grant it for this.

You"ladies" are horrible!!! How fucking judgemental and rude can someone be!!! Half of you are ugly, fat and hate their lives… get over yourself and take your judgemental self some where else… 🤦🤦:v::v:

School systems help with speech therapy for free there is no reason to apply for SSI unless your child has a permanent disability

My twins are 6 they are autistic and have adhd, speech delays, weight loss issues, hypertension of the joints, expressive repetitive speech delay, anxiety, pyrosis, gastrointestinal issues, learning disabilities, have one on one personal aids at school and a iep and are in a special education classroom are in speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, along with currently being tested for fragile x syndrome, Johnston’s disease, addisons, thyroid issues and celiac disease. I had to quit everything to stay home and care for them due to constantly being sent home from school for violent meltdowns and I have 3 other children also we live off my husbands disability check because he’s permanently disabled and we still can’t get approval for ssi for our twins due to not enough wrong with them so I highly doubt they will approve your child for a minor speech issues

There is no way they would for speech problems people have a hard time getting it now…speech issues can be fixed with speech therapy and ur help

No , speech delay wouldn’t qualify , r there other diagnosis ? Reason for speech delay ?

Probably not just for a speech issue

One thing is to have a history with his doctor, not sure if speech or speech impediment is considered a severe enough disability to be eligible for ssi or ssdi. But check into it for sure, you never know.

I have noticed some moms on here are very immiture and rude…act like they are so perfect…smh i dont think you can get ssi for just speech my daughter ia 12 and has speech issues since she stated talking…im not lazy so…every kid is different…ao quit judging the poor girl…dont be assholes

My son got it for having a speech impediment and add.

Most likely no. It is a speech delay, it most likely won’t rise to the definition of a disability.

No you wouldn’t get it. No chance in the slightest

Worth a try. Every state is different, my kids’ dad is 31 and gets ssi for adhd. It takes like 2 years and a good lawyer.

Yes you can and it helps if you can prove that they are autistic or developmentally disabled! I was 14 when I first got ssi for other reasons. My doctor actually did my case, she doesn’t always do that but she saw the need, my parents did not have a lot of money and I was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital.

Schools have Speech Pathologists.

Not for just a speech delay. My daughter has Down syndrome and that doesn’t automatically qualify her. We had to prove that their was more wrong than just that. I had to give a full medial history for her. Including her heart defect.

My daughter was blind, couldn’t walk, talk feed by tubes and got no help until she turned 18 and was an adult.

Your child doesnt have any kind of disability…I thinking would be morally wrong of you to even try.
He can get help with his speech, that you said is “not that bad”.
Talk to the school and see if they have a speech pathologist available to help.

Depends if his speech issue is do to a hearing issue. My daughter had a problem annunciating certain letters. It was due to a hearing issue. She had SSI til she turned 18. She’s 19 now

No. Speech therapy is needed to help with a speech impediment. It is not a debilitating disability.

No you can’t if it’s just a speech delay.
It has to be something that actually will effect their life especially when they get older.

Not for a speech delay. There is therapy for that and it can get better to where they are where they should be for the age. Disability is for conditions that will affect their quality of life for ever. It’s a simple Google search about qualifying conditions for your state. Both my boys were speech delayed. My youngest was tested and qualified for a full time program at an elementary school, the school bus picked up and dropped off when he was 3. Do some research there is services available.

No. And I’m embarrassed fir you that you would ask.

That is so wrong bless you for taking care of your beautiful daughter

Both of my kids have speech issues. Not grounds for SSI at all.

Well I was fortunate that I didn’t have children or grandchildren with any disabilities like that but I can see why you’d want to remain anonymous because why would you even ask that stupid question I mean seriously I never would have thought about it I thought I was lucky that I was able to collect Social Security after paying into it for a million years and so then when I retired I got enough Social Security not to take care of myself fortunately I had a decent job with the state that I live in but I still don’t have quite enough and I have some health issues one of which was cancer and that cause issues for other internal parts but I wouldn’t even have thought to try to get Social Security for a 7 year old with a speech issue I guess I would think you would go to a speech therapist and see what they have to say

If he has a disability you probably can, but I know people with autistic children who are having to fight for benefits for their child in court. If you child doesn’t have an ACTUAL disability, which is what SSI disability benefits is for, then unless you lie, and would need medical proof of, you won’t qualify.

Don’t feel embarrassed. We’re all following this page to seek advice and support. A speech delay isn’t considered a disability so that’s out of the question. However, if you are worried about the issue to the point you’re trying to seek help with low income. Stop by your local social services and ask to speak with someone about speech therapy. 9/10 they’ll give you the resources you need and or pay for it themselves through their department. Best of luck mama!

my daughter has optic nerve hypoplasia, (blind in one eye) which has caused pituitary stalk interuptiom syndrome making her struggle with comprehending anything, adrenal insufficiency where she was to take steroids daily. growth hormone delay so she takes hormones daily and a slew of other things. and I have never even thought of putting her on SSI. that money needs to go to people who have more severe disabilities, not a dang speech delay.

Unless it effects his school work they wont.

Speech therapy would be free for single parents wouldn’t it? You aren’t entitled to anything, just do the right thing and get your kids speech corrected you’re the mother!

Get child support from the father of the kids

Shame on folks being cruel and it never hurts to ask questions to better ones family just apply never hurts to try

SSI was Intended for disabled people, not for people that can get therapy and correct the problem. I’m not being a jerk but my son is disabled for life and when ppl collect SSI they really don’t need (yes this happens) they’re taking away from the people/families that really do need the help. Most insurance companies will pay for speech therapy.

I am sorry for all the terrible backlash you are receiving. I think the problem is speech therapy is very costly, even with two incomes. She is not trying to milk government funds. She is trying to support her family, and get help for his speech. It’s hard for a child that is facing an issue such as a speech impediment to go to public school. It is a cruel place for anyone that is different, or less fortunate. :sob: It’s hard to be a single Mother. People do not understand, unless they are faced with it. My suggestion to you is to get on any program available to you that will help your babies. That is what they are there for when people have fallen on hard times. Medicaid should be available to you. The food card should be available to you. They even have babysitting money for your little ones when you make so little, and the Father isn’t in the picture. Don’t feel ashamed to partake of these programs. Nobody should want your children to suffer. :purple_heart: You are doing the best you can, and are trying to better your life by going to school. Good luck! Take care of those babies the best you can. Don’t listen to the cruelty. :sob::green_heart:

It won’t hurt to try—call the SS and ask questions.

I dont believe speech classifies as a disability. When I went into getting SSI for my daughter that is disabled you have to have multiple conditions . Like Cp wheelchair bound etc . But it also depends on your case worker . It never hurts to try

No. Speech delay is not a disability. All of my kids have delayed speech. 2 of them are honor students in middle school. Likely there are free speech services available to her in the community or through the school. My youngest is also 7, and hers is pretty bad. It has made it hard for her to learn to read, thus, is affecting her schooling… still not disabled. Speech, by itself, does not determine a disability. Speech would have to be a symptom of a bigger problem such as autism.

No its not considered a disibitity. When they become school age you can go threw the school and they will get them in speech therapy at least in Canada for free. Both my son’s where in it from kindergarten to grade 1. Some kids are in it longer. Or you can go to there peditration and out them in earlier but you will have to pay.

Should’ve had him in some speech therapy when he was like 3 or 4

my son is completely nonverbal and we receive free therapy (speech, behavioral, and occupational). i would addressnit with your pediatrician and they can give you rhe numbers for local free agencies. we only have a medical card that would cover outsourced therapy

Apply for ssi. It wouldn’t hurt. Everyone is different.

Yes I think you can !

Speech most likely not, but it may be worth looking into why the speech delays as that may both help with the speech delays as that possibly could. May be worth getting an assessment done for why he has speech delays. :sparkling_heart:

 not to be rude, but this is why social security disability doesn’t work and such. Too many ppl on disability and caregivers/parents living off of it and not enough people working and putting into it.
My daughter has seizures and doesn’t get ssi.
