Can medications give a false negative?

Currently I take an antidepressant (citalopram) and a prescription water pill (hydrochlorothiazide). I quit taking birth control about 3 months ago. Could my medicines give a false negative? Especially wondering about the water pills because could it dilute my urine too much for a pregnancy test to detect hcg levels? Just wondering for future reference for myself.

Get a blood test from the dr they are the most accurate

Try taking a test first thing in the morning, urine will be more concentrated at that time. I also take citalopram and it didn’t affect pregnancy tests at all, i got positives just as early as before i had started taking it.

Talk to your Dr. They can help you find out.

Yes. I was on the same antidepressant and I got 4 false negatives. I was so diagnosed with thyroid disease after I had my son. Yes same pregnancy. :joy:. Go to your Dr and get a blood test. Best bet.
Also Vitamin D3 is a natural antidepressant. My husband lost his job. Then our home. He was talking suicide. I read that it was an antidepressant and started him on it.after 2 weeks he was fine. Stopped talking about it. Have your Dr Do a full Vitamin Panel before you start. I had to double on my vitamins and I also had to have prescription Vitamins strength during.

Use your first pee and use red dye strips.
Kf you suspect something, then I would go get bloodwork done to see your levels

I was on the same antidepressant when I got pregnant with my son. I got an immediate positive result. Definitely try taking the test first thing in the morning when you get up. The water pills I’m not sure about :woman_shrugging:t2: it is possible they could be diluting your urine too much but idk  definitely talk to your doctor maybe they could do a blood test for you

I take that medication and have since 2015 and I’ve never had a false negative pregnancy test.

Hydrochlorothiazide is not just a water pill that’s also for high blood pressure. I’ve been on it for ever and it didn’t dilute mine enough to not show up on a pregnancy test. I had bought one of the cheap ones from the dollar tree but I was like 2 weeks late.

The more important question is are these drugs fetotoxic meaning can they harm a fetus. If the answer is yes, please get back on birth control. Before you start trying getting pregnant, review your medication with an obstreatician in a pre-conception consultation.

Those medications do not cause false negatives . Hctz has no effect on hcg.

It could also be that your body just doesn’t metabolize hcg like normal. I knew someone who had negative urine AND blood tests until she was 9 weeks along. She kept telling people she was pregnant and they didn’t believe her. She went to the doc the same day she finally got a positive and ultrasound showed she was 9 weeks and a couple days along. She had had a blood test the previous week that was negative too.

Ask a Doctor. On facebook they are not doctors?

Little known fact, most antidepressants can mess with your birth control. The same as antibiotics can negate it. Always get an opinion from your doctor.
