I had my 1st son at 35 and 1, and my 2nd son at 34 and 5. They were both 5lbs 2oz and neither had to go into the NICU. They stayed with me the entire time Iām currently 31 weeks with my 1st girl. Iām sure she will arrive early as well and be just as healthy as my first 2 tiny babies.
My daughter was born at 35 weeks and only had to stay one additional day and no NICU. They said boys lungs are less mature so they can sometimes be more likely with a NICU stay for a preemie if on the boarder of being early. It can all depend on labor and other issues as well though. You should be fine though
My son was born at 33 weeks and weighed 8 lbs 3 ozs and was perfectly healthy just a big boy and he is almost 21 now so 37 weeks should be just fine!
I delivered a still born at 36 weeks with GD. I worked as a floor nurse. Had labor stopped at 34 weeks. Same with 3 rd child. He spent 2 days in NICU to regulate body temp and blood sugars. He weighed 6lbs 5 oz
My 2nd was born at 36w 6d and was admitted into the NICU when he was 1 day old. This was due to low blood sugar but that turned around in 3 days. We stayed an additional 3 days due to jaundice. Every baby is different and you truly wonāt know until they are born. Best of luck!!
Not always. I have 2 children born at 36 weeks no NICU but did have to do the lights for jaundice. My other child was born at 38 weeks and did great too.
My daughter was technically born at 38 weeks, but she stopped growing at 32 weeks. She survived that last 6 weeks with ZERO fluid. She didnāt need to be in the NICU, she was perfectly healthy (Thank God). Your baby will be fine
37 weeks is full term by 36 weeks their lungs are completely developed and they can breathe on their own with no assistance. You shouldnāt need a nicu stay.
My oldest was born at 34weeks. No NICU needed for him. Did get the steroid shots though.
My daughter was born at 36 weeks and did not need NICU
My 1st was 36w and spent a few hours due to her temperature dropping the day we were to be discharged, my 2nd was 35w and spent 2 weeks due to unable to eat on his own, and my 3rd was a day shy of 37w and spent 10days due to inhaling amniotic fluid on the way out and was treated for pneumonia. It kind of all depends on how the baby is when born. Also some hospitals will have baby in NICU is less then 5 pounds and my 1st was a few oz less.
My daughter was born 35 weeks and she didnāt NICU
I had my first son right at 36 weeks and no nicu or no extra time at hospital was home in 2 days
My son was born at 36 weeks and didnāt need NICU but then again I would guess depends on how well the baby responds.
My son was born at 36 weeks, they kept him overnight in the NICU just to monitor his breathing & then he was good to go! Latched fine!
My daughter was born at 36 weeks in 1988 by emergency c-section. Other than having jaundice she was perfectly fine. We were both in hosp for 4 days due to my c-section. Now she is a gifted and talented teacher at a STEM school. Been healthy and active all her life. Try not to worry.
My baby born at 40 weeks needed NICU. Depends on their condition once born!
Mine didnāt she was 37 full term. But I wasnāt high risk so not sure how that works but I bet everything will be wonderful
I had my second at 35 weeks due to an emergency induction from preeclampsia. I was given an ultrasound to make sure her lungs were functioning and she was completely fine! My newest guy born in april was 36 weeks and 5 days bc of gestational diabetes. He didnāt need anything special either. I was able to control my diabetes with diet. Both of mine are healthy! They were worried my newest guy would be a big baby but he was 7lbs 6oz so Iām glad they didnāt have me wait the 3 more weeks!
It honestly depends on how big they are and how developed. The reason they are waiting as long as possible (37/38) is because they should be fully developed and its less risk to the baby. More than likely it will more depend on size. However I would say to TRY (I know its not easy) not to stress, thats not early enough to guarentee a trip to NICU. Like I said it will depend on the size and health and less on the weeks. Good vibes mama. Try to relax for you and your littleā:heart:
Three of my children were born at 37 weeks and they were perfectly fine and I was high risk. I had gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and my age was major factor. I started getting Monitored at 28 weeks to make sure my son heart was ok. I was given steroids a week before I delivered to make sure the baby lungs would be ok. I delivered a beautiful baby boy on March 2. I have not problems.
More than likely NICU for a number of reasons. Most hospitals will automatically do that with a baby 37 weeks or younger. You having diabetes the baby will likely be a large baby and they normally canāt hold their sugar levels so they will place an IV and intervene to keep babyās sugar stable.
Iām sorry if this sounds harsh, but you should have asked your doctor this.
But, it all depends on the baby. Size, health condition, delivery etc.
My son was born at 37 weeks and he spent no time in the NICU.
Both my boys were born at 37 weeks. No nicu and went home just like if they were born at 40 weeks
Iām a type 1 diabetic. I also had gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. I had my son at 36+6 due to all of itā¦ he didnāt have to stay in NICU at all. His billiruben was a little high but it was still low enough he didnāt need treatment. We were able to go home after only 3 days of him being born
I think it just depends. My son was born at 35 weeks and he did not need the nicu. We went home after three days. My daughter was born at 37 weeks but she did stay a night in the nicu.
My daughter came at the end of her 37th week. She latched on within 30 minutes of being born and did not need any kind of treatment, we went home in two days. It depends on the baby but in general is fine.
I had my boy at 35 weeks. Never needed NICU or oxygen or anything. Came out hollerinā and aināt stopped since heās 6 now and the coolest dude I know!
I gave birth to all my three kids at 37 weeks. No issues with me or babies. My body just didnāt carry for more than that. Doctor said that is normal and 37 weeks is considered full term already.
I got abruptio placentae at 36.5. I have babies fast. And with no epidurals all natural. Water broke at home. Headed in. Had blood in the fluids. Got there and his dad said I was bleeding I told him I donāt want to know anything at all. Told it to the doc and nurses as well. I had a 6.13 oz baby. At first he wasnāt breathing and was blue due to lack of O2 but it was quick. Most of those babies are born dead. Mine wasnāt and I feel it due to my stress level of staying calm the whole time and not knowing but just focusing on my baby. He was healthy. Had some jaundice but was never in ICU. Came home as usual. No extra stays.
I had gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. My daughter was born at 35 weeks. She almost had to go to the NICU that night bc her blood sugar was to low but after a couple more feedings it was where it was supposed to be and she was fine. She did have trouble latching so I wasnāt able to nurse for that long.
My son was a preemie by dates not weight so no nicu for him.
Both of mine came naturally 4 weeks early. They were each around 6lbs 6oz and neither had to be in the NICU. They were perfectly fine. I do remember 0-3 mo onesies/sleepers being too big. We had to go buy more NB sized items. They eventually grew into it all though.
I had Twins at 37 weeks and neither of them had to go to the NICU. They were 5lbs and 5 lbs 13ozā¦I would say depends on the baby.
My water broke at 29 weeks was sent to the hospital i spent 4 weeks lost his heartbeat rushed into emergency csection he spent 5 weeks in nicu weighing 4lbs 1oz he went home on oxygen but healthy 7 year old now
I got 2 babies born at 37 weeks. The first one didnāt need to go to NICU, we stayed in the hospital as normal. The 2nd one needed to be incubated. So I guess it depends on the baby.
I had the same issues and had my baby at 37 weeks and she did not need the nicu. I did have to give myself 2 steroid shots right before delivery which helps develop the babyās lungs.
37w is considered full term I had 2out of the 4 I have born at 37w and they only stayed over night and the other stayed in nicu for two days both cause their sugars were low I should apso say Iām a type 1 diabetic
Ive had my 3 babies at 37 wks and 5 day, 36 weeks and then 35 wks and 5 days. I had the steroid shot with all 3 and all 3 came out healthy and no problemsā¦ Went home the next day good luck momma
No questions are stupid! Mine were born at 31, 35, & 28 weeks. All required hospital stays, but if your baby does need NICU, find peace knowing your baby is being taken care of!
My twins born at 35 weeks and got to go home in 5 days. All depends on their lungs
Depends on the baby. My son was born at 37 weeks, he was also almost 8lbs. He didnāt need to be in NICU. Every baby is different.
I ended up having an emergency c-section with my last baby. I had severe pre-eclampsia. I was able to have steroid shots to help develop her lungs and then had to rush to the hospital unexpectedly one night and deliver my daughter at 35 weeks. She was barely 5lbs but her lungs were doing very well on her own and was lucky to stay out of the NICU.
Depends I had two of mine at 37 weeks. BOth very healthy and were able to go home right away.
Baby will go to NICU not because of gestational age but because you were diabetic they will want to be sure the babyās blood sugar remains stable and 9 out 10 chances your baby will big because moms with diabetes have larger babies take care of yourself you have precious cargoā¤ļø
It will depend on a few things.
Weight, respiratory status, APGAR score & most importantly their blood sugar after birth .Most babies of a diabetic Mom need 24 hour blood sugar monitoring.
If your sugar levels were within range during pregnancy, the. Baby,s sugar may only dip slightly.
I was the diabetes educator at a community hospital & all babies sugar levels are routinely monitored for the first 24 hours. If normal they do not go to out NICU but please donāt be surprised if they do for the first day, it is precautionary. Best wishes & keep your sugars in check until then.
Depends. My I was induced with my daughter at 37 weeks because of high blood pressure. She was born with the cord wrapped around her neck. No time in NICU just a little oxygen
My youngest was born at 38 weeks, no extra time or nicu. He was a little jaundice another he was 6lbs but I think each birth depends on circumstance and how your pregnancy has been progressing. Was told by my neighbor yesterday her youngest was born early I think she said 37 weeks and she had gestational diabetes just like yours and her youngest was 10lbs with an emergency cesarean.
It all just depends on the baby. My first was born via c section and didnāt need the NICU. My last was another csection at 37 weeks cause of preeclampsia and baby was in the nicu for 9 days.
I had two babies born at 36 weeks (almost exactly). My first had a two week NICU stay as his lungs were undeveloped. My second was strong as could be and youād never have know he was early.
Itās hard to say but I wish the very near for you and baby!
My sisterās twins were 35 weekers and only my nephew needed the NICU. My neice only spent 24 hrs in there because itās mandatory for all babies born before 37 weeks in our hospital. 37 weeks is considered full term.
My son was born at 38 weeks and spent a few days in the nicu because he couldnāt breathe on his own. He was intubated for 3 days. They said he was in shock from his birth. He was an 8lb 6 oz babyā¦a giant compared to some that were already breathing on their own. Every birth is different. I had my daughter induced at 36 weeks because of high blood pressure and she came home right away.
I had a c section at 37 weeks with my son due to diabetes he didnāt need Nicu and we were able to go home 4 days after birth
I had all my kids before 37 weeks and none went to the nicu
I had my baby at 37 because his heat rate jumped to 237 or something in womb. I was schedule for 1pm they rushed me at 12 cuz he couldnt handle being in womb much longer. He came perfect we spent 5 days in hospital. He had 3 heart murmers but by 1 year check up 2 closed by 2 the third one closed. He health hyper little boy. Hes also my rainbow baby. By day 3 he did lose 2 lbs but thats cuz my brest milk didnt come in and they didnt listen til he lost the qeight then i was able to formula feed him. We went home day 5 after i proved my family bought water and formula other then the weifht lost he was healthy as he could be.
It all depends on the baby. My first was born at 34 weeks 3 days and was in nicu for 13 days. I had my second at 38 weeks 2 days and she was never in the nicu, that being said my sister had her first at the same time as my second and she was 36 weeks, the baby never needed nicu but was in the hospital for a week to make sure she was OK.
My son was 36 weeks. He was a little jaundice but did not have to go to the NICU had to stay one extra day and then we got to go home.
I had my son at 37 weeks because he has fetal tachycardia. He spent 24 hours in nicu just to be monitored, but itās because he had fetal complications. He was perfect size, 7lb 3oz and happiest baby, latched just fine and breast fed and whoās now a brilliant, amazing 4 and half year old
Depends if they their lungs are developed and they have no other health issues. My daughter was born at 36 weeks . She did great at first but choked on formula in the new born nursery and they had her breast feed from there in out. A few days later she developed yelllow jaundice after being sent home and ended back in NICU
I was induced at 37wks for preeclampsia and we just had to stay 24hrs we didnāt need NICU he was 6lbs 2oz and had no trouble nursing it depends on the pregnancy and the baby.
Not always. It depends on a lot of factors. My grandson was 36 weeks and perfectly healthy
It depends on the growth and weight if baby. My son was born at 35 weeks and was in the nicu for 2 weeks for underdeveloped lungs. He was 5lbs 3oz. Smallest baby I had. He was my fourth and all my others were 38 week babies at over 7lbs.
Good luck mama.
My first 3 all decided 37 weeks was good enough. They all came right on the dot. No NICU or steroid shots beforehand. They came out screaming and healthy.
My 4th arrived at 32 weeks. Was outta the NICU and home 3 weeks later.
That all depends on their lungs. If theyāre a little under developed then a possible nicu stay. If not then theyāre good to home.
I had my first baby in April. I was induced at 38 weeks and he was 5lbs because my placenta was failing, he was fine and didnāt need to go to NICU. As far as drs are concerned babies are full term after 37 weeks and usually babies born to mummyās with gestational diabetes are abit bigger so I think your baby should be ok, if he/she is measuring at a good weight now, unless there are any of health complications.
Depends. My daughter was born at 37wks and she was in the NICU for a week cause she had fluid in her lungs.
I had my youngest (scheduled csection) at 37 weeks and she was 6 pounds 11 ounces, bigger then my 1st that was born at 39 weeks! (I had preeclampsia with both) neither needed NICU or had any health problems! Good luck mama! You got this!
My son was born at 36 weeks and was perfect and didnāt need any extra care. 37 weeks is term and your baby should be fine!
I had my son at 36 weeks and I had HG and they were concerned about the baby getting enough nourishment, but except for having a rough delivery, he was fine. I wish you the best.
Both of my boys were born at 35 weeks. The first didnāt have to stay in the NICU and he came home with me when I was discharged. My second was in the NICU for 2 weeks. Every baby is different but 37 weeks is considered term and usually donāt have any issues.
It depends on how developed they are and how big. My son was 36 weeks but 8lbs 13 oz. He did not require the NICU. There was talk but he got better after a while on his stomach.
I was 37 weeks when I went into labor and gave birth to my son. He didnāt need the NICU at all
I had my oldest after being induced at 36 n half weeks cause of low amniotic fluid she didnāt need NICU went home 5 days later cause it was a c- section . Was supposed to get induced at 38 weeks with my twins, water broke at 35 1/2 weeks. Also C-section No need of NICU. One was 4 n half pounds one was 5lbs 6oz but and we went home 4 days later. I will think it will all depends on the babies condition at birth. Hope everything goes well.
I had twins born at 35 weeks with no NICU time. Check with then about the shots that mature their lungs and maybe even an amniocentesis before to make sure all is well
My son was 37 weeks. He didnāt go after birth and came home with me and ended up going back to the nicu for a weekend because of elevated bilirubin. But he came out just fine lol. Heās almost 13 now
My last baby was born at 37 weeks. He was perfectly healthy. No NICU, and a natural latcher
Mine was born at 36 weeks and 6 days. His lungs were not fully developed. They gave him a shot to help his lungs and gave him antibiotics. He spent 14 days in the NICU due to his lungs. After being home for the first 2 weeks and seeing the Dr. you would never know he was a preemie. Each baby is different so there are no guarantees.
My daughter was born at 37 weeks and she did not need a NICU. Best of luck to you mama
My daughter was born at 37 weeks and she was absolutely perfect but depends a lot on each pregnancy
Depends if after the delivery if the baby can maintain their blood sugar alone. I have type 2 diabetes and being on insulin during pregnancy made my youngest sons blood sugar irregular. I had him at 30 weeks but they said irregular blood sugars are normal in type 2 babies. Hope this helps
I had the same complications as you. She was born at 38 weeks and didnāt need anything except a little light for jaundice because many gestational diabetes babies have higher bilirubin levels
It all depends on the baby! Though I have to sayā¦some of these replies have incorrect information. 36 weeks is preterm, 37-39 are early term and 39-41 are full term, late term is beyond 41 weeks.
Hoping you have a safe delivery and healthy baby!!!
I had both my kids at 37 weeks due to severe preeclampsia with my daughter and mild with my son. My daughter had breathing issues but was out of the NICU by 24 hours, she was 6lbs1oz and my son came out completely healthy no issues at 6lbs12oz. They told me both times that 37 weeks is considered full term. Hang in there mama everything will be fine.
my daughter was taken by c section 2 weeks before I was due cuz of gd they checked her sugars for the first day and a half but never went to NICU
It depends on the baby. My son was born at 36 weeks and he was completely healthy. No NICU
Babies born at 37 weeks donāt necessarily have to go to NICU. They go if they need extra monitoring or support. Every baby is different
Was induced at 37 weeks ended up emergency c sectionā¦had him a monday went home wednesday he was in my room by my side the whole time no nicu nothing he latched like a pro better than my girl who came at 42 weeks š¤·
My middle was at 37 weeks and she was perfect, 6lbs 12 oz and she was three weeks early. She latched like a champ. All babies and mommas are different, but now at 37 weeks babies are pretty much considered term.
My baby was born 36 weeks, and she was born early because I had severe preeclampsia. The reason my baby was in the NICU for 12 days was because she was having seizures. But sheās a healthy almost 6 month now. But my baby was able to latch just fine to feed. Unfortunately it got difficult to feed and pump because I was also stuck in the hospital for 6 days myself. But she could feed just fineš¤·š¼āāļø
I had my last baby at 37 and I have full blown diabetes and he weighed 8 pounds 14oz. Nothing was wrong with him except he had jaundice so once we got home they came out and he had a billiblanket for awhile but didnāt need to be in nicu
Nope as long as the lungs have developed. Steroids can also be injected on baby in utero if lungs are not well developed and baby will be fine no nicu needed. unless thereās other underlying conditions then baby may need nicu at that point.
My son was born at 36 weeks and was 8 lbs and 23ā longā¦ and yes my due date was correctā¦ he never needed the NICUā¦heās 18 now and 6ā3ā 190.
Depends on the baby I had one baby born at 36w one and two at 37w none of them needed NICU and were all very healthy. My 36 weeker did have to come back a day later and stay for 4 days but that was due to jaundice.
Iād encourage the op to consult with her āhigh-riskā ob/gyn. I would think that they would be able to provide her with more specific, personalized information.
I had gestational diabetes with my last son who was born 6/22/2020 at 39 weeks and he ended up staying 2 days in the NICU cuz he has issues breathing, wasnt anything super bad but they want to make sureā¦ every one with gestational diabetes is different
I had both my daughters at 37 weeks. They were over 7 pounds and lungs were fully developed.
My daughter was born at 36 weeks exactly and didnāt the NICU. She was born at 6 lbs 12 oz.
They say 37 is full term so unless thereās something wrong with the baby i donāt see why heād need the NICU my nephew was 6 weeks early and he didnāt go to the NICU
My daughter came early at 38 weeks and she was health. NICU wasnāt needed.
