Do babies born at 37 weeks need the NICU?

36/37 weeks doesn’t count as premature… but other factor may require NICU… as the baby ability to regulate her blood secure…

my granddaughter was 5 weeks old weighed a lil over 5 pounds didn’t need NICU

I had my son at 38 weeks and suffered from hypertension but thankfully he came on his own and he was fine. It is hard to determine if a NICU is necessary because every birth and situation is different. I would say at 37 or 38 weeks baby should be good without it. Hope everything goes well.

I had my son at 34 weeks, cesarean, because of pre-eclampsia and we had been on bed rest in the hospital for a month prior, I was getting steriods, his lungs and organs were fully developed. He was 4lbs 13oz, we went home 5 days later. He spent zero time in the NICU. He had a hard time latching but I pumped for 7 months exclusively, then finally added formula… kept pumping until 1 year. It was exhausting but we made it through…

My 4 month old (my 4th as well) was born 37 weeks but came needing extra care. Was in nicu for one week. The first day I couldn’t go down bc I was in so much pain from my c-section still couldn’t walk. I expressed all the colostrum and when she got really hungry I asked for donor breast milk. I refused formula completely. The next day I got to see her and she latched on with no issues. They have consultants at the hospitals and a nicu consultant as well. So pick their brains while u have them. No question is a stupid question. my other daughter was born at 37 weeks and was completely fine.

Tha baby will automatically go to the NICU for observation because of ur diabetes…that’s what they did both times with my kids and yes I am diabetic

My twins, like most multiples, were early. At exactly 36 weeks, they were both over 5 pounds, required no NICU time, and went home with me. Barring
Further complications, besides your diabetes, your baby should be just fine at 37 to 38 weeks. Good luck!

My oldest son was born at 38 perfectly healthy 7 lbs 4oz breastfed great. I’ll have to be induced this time because im a diabetic

I had my 2nd baby at 36 weeks, also had gestational diabetes but no insulin. I was scared as well. She was born at 5lbs and no NICU.

My oldest daughter was 3 weeks early and she was just fine at 6 lbs 2 oz. My twins were born at 34 weeks and didn’t need a NICU stay but they did have to stay for a week mainly to get their bilirubin under control. Every baby is different.

I had 2 at 36 weeks and neither needed nicu. They did both get jaundice though. Both were over 7lbs!

I had both my kids prematurely.
One at 34 weeks (4lbs 7oz)the other at 35 (4lbs 3oz)
Only 3days in the NICU
This was 24 and 22 years ago
Technology has come a long way since then. I’m sure baby will be in good hands :hugs:

My girl was born at 37 weeks and my boy was born at 35 weeks. Neither had to go NICU and were perfectly fine.

37 weeks is considered term, shouldn’t be any issues other then if the diabetes has caused something. (I have no experience with diabetes)

I had my twins at 37 weeks. Both natural birth and healthy. My daughter has a bit of a time learning how to latch, but other than that healthy.

My son was 35 weeks… I was induced due to type 1 diabetes. He was in the hospital 5 days but no nicu. I got to stay right with him in the room. Latched just fine…

My son was born at 36 weeks and didn’t have to stay in the NICU, it really depends on the baby, every situation is different

Like so many have commented it really depends on the baby. I personally had all 4 of my babies in their 36th week and only my 1st and 4th needed any NICU time.

1st born at 36 weeks - spent 4 days in the NICU
2nd born at 36.6 weeks- came home next day
3rd born at 36.1 weeks - came home next day
4th born at 36.2 weeks - came home next day BUT had to be readmitted on day 3 due to jaundice and spent 48 hrs in the NICU under a jaundice light (I was able to room in with her since I was nursing)

My 1st was 41.4 weeks so nearly 2 weeks over weighed a good 9lb 6oz and he still needed to go. All babies are different from the get go and some may some may not need that little bit of help xx

My daughter was born at 34 weeks due to my pre eclampsia and didn’t go into NICU. She was slightly jaundiced but it was treated at home

I had my twins at 34 weeks and only one was in nicu for the first two nights because his blood sugar was low at first and they had to hold him for 48 hours to just make sure he could stabilize himsef

I had gestational diabetes with my first son I was 38wks an he was 8lbs 10oz but he still had to go to the nicu because his sugar dropped when he was born he was use to my high sugar levels and when he came out his body couldnt produce enough sugar which cause his to drop he was in there for a week until his sugar stabilized they gave him iv glucose plus told us to dip his paci in sugar water. My youngest son was born at 37wks and he was perfectly healthy went home the same day I did

my son didn’t. He was born 37 weeks. I had pre-eclampsia. as long as he is in a good weight and overall healthy should be fine to go home.

Both of my kids were born at 37 weeks and they didn’t need the nicu and went home after a couple days…

My first born was 3 weeks early. My water broke at 2pm i had her at 730am. She stayed in the incubator for 1 week because cord was wrapped around her neck and ive been up for over 24 hours to relax they gave me something. After she was born they gave her something to counteract that med and she wouldnt get put of it. Thats y she stayed. She was perfect healthy and no problems. Shes 19 now and deans list in college becomming a police officer

I had both my kids at 37 weeks. One went to nicu for her blood sugar not staying stable and the other didn’t need to go. X

It depends what happens when the baby is born. If the baby is having sugar level issues, etc. My daughter was born via emergency c-section at 34 weeks and had no sugar issues even though I had gestational diabetes, and she only stayed 11 days in the NICU. My son was born at 39 weeks via scheduled csection (I now have tyoe 2 diabetes and am insulin dependent) and he stayed 4 days.

It’s not a one size fits all. 37 full term in some circles but babies are still developing up until 39+ weeks. If they plan to induce that early it may be the best for yours and your baby’s health.

I’ve had all my babies 38 weeks or earlier due to type 1 diabetes! My last was 36 weeks! No nicu needed for any of them (5)! However depending on blood sugar control that can vary!

My youngest daughter was born at 32 weeks…in NICU for 2 weeks…she is fine now… oldest daughter was born at 36 weeks no NICU…they know what they are doing trust your Dr… good luck

My oldest was born at 36 weeks ans considered a premie. He was 7 lbs 6 oz. And didn’t need to be in the ICU he came home the next day. I was induced for my daughter at 37 weeks because she had kidney issues again we where home the next day

My second son was born at 36 weeks and 4 days and didn’t need to go to the NICU. He was 6 lbs 7 Ozs.

I had my daughter at
37 weeks emergency c-section due to preeclampsia and I had gestational diabetes also she was 7lb 8 oz and only in the hospital until I was discharged no nicu she just had a little jaundice.

No question is stupid luv
Development is key …
You could go the full on 40 weeks and need NICU
PLUS keep in mind of technology and medical progress & improvements made
I’m apt to say unlikely but, not a guarantee
Latching issues every maternity ward has nursing specialists to aide if any problems arise they’ll walk you through it even after you’re home

Not always. I had my youngest 2 early and they didnt go to NICU. My youngest was almost 35 weeks and she almost went but didnt go. It was a sugar issue. My son was born at 37 weeks and did fine.

My 36 week baby did but only because she weighed 3lbs so they had to make sure she was strong enough to come home. She didn’t need any tubes or oxygen and only stayed a week came home weighing 4 lbs

I was high risk for my last baby, I was on insulin injector myself 5 times aday and I was on the baby was fine she came at 37 and a half weeks she’s developed find latching on fine feeding fine the only problem was because I was on insulin it therefore affected her blood sugar levels so for 20 hours yes she was in the Nicu that was just to help stabilize her blood sugar levels and no other reason at all. Than the baby back with me

I had my daughter at 36 weeks, she didn’t go to the nicu, she was big and healthy and no problems.

My youngest grandson was born at 37 weeks. Other than a little jaundice he was fine. He had no problems latching on and is now 15. He was born on a Wednesday and they came home that Friday.

They will keep them in nicu till they maintain there sugar levels and breath well my sister had two with diabetes and the one was tiny the other was 8 lbs so it depends on the child wether they wake to eat or have to be coaced

I had gestational with my daughter, I was scheduled for a c section a week before due date, ends up my water broke before that could happen. Ended up being induced, in labor 16 hours, they could of clearly let me do c section, when daughter was born she went straight to nicu for breathing, transferred to another hospital for seizures and out of hospital within 3 weeks her original due date

My oldest was induced at 37 weeks. Shell be 10!! She was born at just over 6lbs! No NICU! And was healthy from the get go.

Unless something like swallowing meconium happens, every thing should be just fine. I had my 2 youngest kids at 37 & 38 weeks respectively…neither needed NICU.

Yes. I had my son due to preeclampsia and gestational diabetes at 36 weeks. He didn’t need the nicu. He was big tho… 9lbs 4oz

I had my 1st baby at 25 weeks, 2nd baby at 32 weeks and my 3rs baby at 37 weeks. My 3rd came home with me for 1 week then had jaundice really bad so she had a 4 day NICU stay. 36 weeks is full term so it would just depend on your baby specifically. I wouldnt worry too much though!

I had my son at 36 weeks and he did not have to be in the NICU. He was small about 5lb 6oz and we stayed at the hospital for almost a week before they dischared us. We stayed that long only because he wasn’t gaining weight like he should of, he was having trouble feeding until a nurse showed me a way of coaxing him to eat. I couldn’t breast feed since i never really had a milk supply come in but other than that he was healthy.

My daughter was born at 38 weeks and did not require a NICU stay. She came out healthy, and went home when I did.

My youngest was 37.6 he decided to come 9 days before my scheduled c-section and I would have been 39.1 and he latched on like a champ. And no nicu time either. 37 weeks is considered full term to deliver if you are a high risk pregnancy and if you have a normal pregnancy they won’t do it till 39 weeks

I have had 6 going on 7 between 35-37 weeks and no nicu needed for any of them. 37 weeks their lungs are fully developed and they are considered full term.

My second pregnancy went to 37 weeks (twins) and they were just fine. Even a high risk pregnancy can be considered a healthy pregnancy.

I’m fairly certain 37 weeks is considered full term. I had both my boys at 37 & 38 weeks. Both were healthy.

No questions about birth, delivery and/or the health of your newborn are EVER stupid!! Ask ALL the questions, even if you think you might know the answer. Being prepared in either case is always worth it’s weight in Gold!! I wish you the best and pray your new little doesn’t have to spend any time in the NICU!

Well you could also go into labor earlier before they induce you. I had my last daughter 3 weeks early. She weighed 5 pounds and was a little jaundice for a couple hours other than that she was fine we went home next day. Also it could depend on many other factors and how the baby is doing.

Not all the time depends on how they are after delivery my daughter was born at 37 weeks & spent a few hrs in much bc of breathing trouble after birth

I had one at 37 weeks and one at 38 weeks. My 37 weeker only had to stay in the nicu for a few hours because he couldn’t keep his body temperature up. But by that night he was fine and with me. My 38 weeker didn’t need the nicu at all. My 37 weeker was 6lbs and my 38 weeker was 7lbs.

I was induced at 38 weeks for gestational diabetes as well. My baby was fine and didn’t need NICU.

Baby girls usually do better than boys because their lungs develop faster but both do.pretty well at 37 weeks. I had a 37w1d 38w2d and 38w3d and all did well

My eldest has Down syndrome and he was born at 37.5 weeks. He was fine, no Nicu for which I was grateful for. We had a normal delivery in a country town and my gp delivered him.

With my oldest was born at 37 wks by only 3 hours. He weighed 6lb 1oz. When we were released, he weighed closer to 5lbs 3 oz. He was monitored in the nicu for less than 2 hours. He latched perfectly fine. He did end up back in the hospital after we had been released due to jaundice.

My son was born at 39 weeks 2 days and was in NICU for one day for observation. I had gestational diabetes too. Every situation is different

You can deliver at 42 weeks and still have a baby in the NICU. But Baby’s are allowed to go home at 35 weeks as long as they are healthy, eating and meet all the discharge requirements.

I am a diabetic, both of my children were born early. But both healthy and didn’t need the NICU. One was 36 weeks and one was 33 weeks.

I went into labour at 36+5, my daughter was born the following day. She was healthy and fine, stayed with me. It took time before she started eating so she dropped weight, we were in a hospital 5 days. When she gained some weight, we went home. She was not in an incubator.

My middle child was born at 36 weeks at 5lbs. No NiCu needed. Bilirubin was slightly high so we stayed an extra night.

I had my daughter at 36 weeks with diabetes.
It was natural but I was nervous she was early .
My water broke and she was 6 lbs but fine no ICU

I had this with all 3 of my babies all born at 38weeks first born stated in NICU over night second born was in NICU for 5 days and my youngest stayed in my room due to covid but had low sugars they all had now sugars so theres a possibility that they might have to due to sugars

At 36 weeks the the baby is do developing and is just gaining weight. As long as the baby is developing on schedule and with no complications they wont need a incu. They just might not be as big as some of your others

I had 3 kids with preeclampsia. My first 32 weeks-NICU. MY last at 29 weeks-NICU my middle was 37 weeks and she did not need NICU. She got to stay with me in the room.

I have had 3 high risk pregnancies. 2 of them were born at 35 weeks. They both were able to go home the same day as I did. They were in the nicu the whole time before we left. Every woman’s experience is different. Good luck and congratulations

I had my twins at 38 weeks. It was scheduled and they were big for twins 6lbs 1oz and 5lbs 12oz. They didn’t need the nicu

There are so many variables that can affect if your baby will need to go into the NICU. Because you are on insulin, one big obstacle will be how well your baby’s blood sugars are doing, not the 37 week gestation. Babies under 36 weeks automatically go to the Nicu. Try not to stress to much, good luck to you!

My middle child was born at 35 weeks and came home with me 2 days later when I was discharged… she was perfect just small… 4lbs 15 oz at birth and came home at 4lbs 8oz…

That just depends on how the baby is. I had my son at 35 1/2 weeks first night he was on oxygen but by next morning was off and doing fine on his own and went home with me the next day.

It depends on the child. I had an emergency c-section at 36 weeks. My son weighed 4lbs 10z and we went home 4 days later. He was never in the NICU.

I was induced at 37 weeks due to high blood pressure, delivered at a hospital that didn’t even have a nicu and she was perfectly healthy

I had my daughter at 34 weeks 2 days and she was perfect she just stayed on warmer 1 night and then was brought to my room. We went home after 4 days.

36 weeks use to be considered full term. If he’s born at 37 or 38 weeks, he should be fine. It will depend on his weight and stuff too. Good luck and congratulations!

I am type 1 diabetic have had 4 babies my first and 3 were 36 weeks and needed a couple days in the NICU due to their sugars, my 2 and 4 were 37 weeks and were just fine.

I just had my 4th baby on the 27th. I was 36weeks and 1day and she didn’t have to go to the NICU and I had gestational diabetes only had to do my shot before bed. But we got to go home after her 24hour mark and the doctors looked her over and she is nursing great. She was 5lbs 14oz

One of mine was born at 36 weeks and one of mine was born at 35 weeks and neither needed the nicu however age of gestation has no real definition on whether the baby will need the nicu. That all depends on the babies size and how well his lungs are matured

I had one at 37 weeks who was just fine and my 2and was born at 41 weeks and was in NICU for extra time but technically 37-38 weeks is still considered full term and most babies are just fine

My oldest was born at 37w6 (went into labor early) and he was fine. No NICU needed.

Had an emergency section at 37 weeks. She was perfect. She was a bit jaundice but it got better in a few days

My twins were born at 36 weeks, weighing 4lbs 15 oz and 5lbs 15 oz. They didnt need the NICU.

A baby is considered full term at 36 weeks, and can be born anytime after that. Drs typically give a due date window now which is anywhere from 36 weeks to 42 weeks, with the actual due date being at 40 weeks.

37 weeks is technically not premature.
Depends on the baby really for whatever care they will need.

I had a 35 weeker. He latched on pretty quick. But every baby is different.
Sending you hugs mama. You got this and baby will be just fine.

My daughter was induced and born at 37 weeks. I also had gestational diabetes, had to do the insulin shots and developed preeclampsia. My baby was completely healthy, did not need NICU, latched great and was born 7 pounds 8 ounces.

No the do not need NICU unless there are other complications. Babies born at 37 weeks are considered full term.

Normally when you have diabetes and pregnant they are concern that the baby will be bigger then normal so that is why they take them early. Sending prayers for safe deliver for you and baby

My daughter was born at 36 weeks, she was 5lbs 8.5oz and did not need to be in the nicu. I was 44 yrs old when she was born.
She is almost 5 yrs old now and weighs 51 lbs, she is a tank.

Both my daughter & son were born at 37 weeks I was high risk and they came out perfect and healthy no problem latching on.

Just had my 4th baby at 36+4. Perfectly healthy no NICU time and home in 24 hours. Breastfeeding like a champ already gained a pound in a week.

unless there are other issues during or after delivery, a 37 weeker does not need NICU. we keep babies 36 and up out on the floor with their moms.

I had my first baby at 37 weeks. He was 6lbs 10 oz. My second child 36 and a half weeks she was 5lbs 10oz my 3rd child at 34 weeks. She was 6lbs 10oz. Neither one of them had to got to the NICU. They were all healthy babies

I had gestational diabetes while I was pregnant. I delivered at 37 weeks and he was perfectly healthy. He weighed almost 10 pounds. Good luck!

I was induced with my youngest at 36 weeks and no nicu stay was needed. Every baby is different but normally no they don’t need to go to nicu.

A lot of things decide that… weight, response, breathing, delivery, etc. My boys were both born at 37weeks and didn’t go to the nicu, my girl was born at 34 weeks and spent 15days in the nicu. Since you are diabetic baby may need help with sugar levels for a bit.

Mine was born at 34 weeks and was in the NICU 2 weeks. It depends on how the baby’s blood sugars are as to whether or not they are in the NICU. My nephew was full term and was in there 2 or 3 days because he was having trouble regulating his blood sugar.

My son was born at 38 weeks and he was in nicu over night he was fully developed and weighed 6lbs I think they were just being cautious but he was fine

My son was born literally on the cusp of 37 weeks. My water broke at 36+6 and he came out on what would have been considered 37. He was blue, not breathing and spent a couple weeks in the NICU. He was not the youngest nor biggest baby in there. Babies of any gestation can need NICU time but it doesn’t mean all will.
I had my second son at 37+2 with no issues.
Prayers for a safe delivery!
