I had 3 babies my first was born at just shy of 38 weeks and she was 6 lbs 11 oz, my second was born on her due date she was 6 lbs 11 oz and my 3rd was born at 37 weeks and was 7 lbs 8 oz. so it just depends on baby, but 37 weeks is full term and he should do just fine. It’s better than risking you and baby with the diabetes. Good luck mama!
My now 15 month old was born by planned c section at 37 weeks and 2 days. He didn’t need a NICU stay at all. Came home 3 days later
I had one baby at 37 weeks and one at 36 weeks and they both were perfectly healthy.
My youngest son was born at 36.5 weeks he didn’t need the NICU because he weight and health were great.
It honestly just depends on the baby, as hard as that is to hear. I had a perfect pregnancy, easy scheduled c section, and my 37 weeker started having blood sugar drops, and thank god she did bc when they got her to the nicu she started having respiratory distress, and had episodes of apnea. Sorry mama, there is no easy answer to that question. She spent 17 days in the nicu, which is 2 more than her 34 weeker sister
My daughter was 37 weeks and was 6lbs 4oz. No problems other than she wanted to sleep more than eat so we had to strip her down at feeding time to wake her up. No NICU or extended hospital stay
I haven’t read the 603 comments so I have no clue if any nicu nurses or docs have replied. I am nicu nurse x 30 years. There are no bets on nicu or not nicu. It has to do with how well your glucose numbers are in regards to stable or fluctuating. Infants of diabetic moms especially on insulin can have a lack of surfactant in their lungs which can cause them to need oxygen and even a ventilator or cpap. Sometimes, they stay with you-no issues. Check blood sugars before each feed x 24 hours. Sometimes, supplementation w formula is needed to keep baby’s sugar level up vs going to nicu. Sometimes, there is no solution except for nicu. In regards to this, I have seen everything over 30 years. If you want more info or have questions, you can pm me and I will be happy to answer them. Good luck.
I had one at 32 weeks and 34 weeks both needed nicu. My other one was 39 weeks and was perfect. Just depends on baby
I had a 37 week baby. She was just fine. We had to stay an extra day for me (had to have a blood transfusion), but she was ready to go by her 2nd day. She did visit the NICU briefly. She didnt want to cry at first. But she was in our room in less than12 hours.
Mentally I would prepare for baby to go to NICU so then if they do it won’t be quite as stressful for you. But prayers for you that it all goes well and you will be even more happy when they don’t.
I wasnt induced but I had my baby at 37 weeks and he was fine he didnt need the NICU i took him home the next day
Depending on the lungs. My twins were 36 weeks and didnt require transfer. One had an oxygen tent/bubble for 4 hours and the other a feeding tube for a day until he ripped it out, due to eating small amounts.
I had my little guy last month, a month early. He stayed right with me. We’ve no problem breastfeeding. He latched right during our first hour of skin to skin. He’s grown leaps and bounds since giving birth. Gained almost 7 pounds and grown 2 inches. He’s developing just fine
I had my son earlier then 37 weeks he was fine my daughter was born past due date and ended up in nicu cause she couldn’t keep her body temperature
Both my boys were 37 on the dot. Neither needed to go to the NICU. Both had jaundice but that was it!
Honestly, it’s different for every birth and every mom… I had my 2nd where you are now and he was only in the NICU for 13 days until we got test results back and within 12 hours of doing his carseat test, he was home… your baby can come anytime and may not need NICU except for the safety protocols for births earlier than 40 weeks…
Nope… at least for us. I had contractions stopped at 32 weeks. At 36+ 1 day, there was no stopping her when my water broke like in the movies. She was born perfectly healthy. The ultrasounds are ± 1 lb in accuracy. Our daughter showed 7lbs. She was born at almost 9lbs at 36+2. I have type 1 diabetes (pregnancy was easy for me) & other than an emergency c-section because she wasn’t coming out after 32 hours of trying (I went to a 6 in the 1st 8 hours & then nothing more happened. I was done & my heart rate was changing with every contraction because I was in labor so long. Neither of us had any issues… definitely blessed.
No most do not I had my youngest at 37 weeks other than a little jaundice we went home in 2 days
My daughter was born at 35 weeks and she needed to be in for 4 days. However she was in the position to move to normal nursery if they needed the bed. You should be good!
My first was born at 37 weeks. No NIcu no issues Breast feeding. My twins were born 36 weeks and 3 days. No NICu one had zero issues breast feeding but the other did but she was so tiny at 4 lb 10 oz
I was gestational and same amount of insulin. I carried to term. She was 7lbs 10oz. My best friend had both her babies at 36 weeks. One needed a week in the NICU and one went home the next day. Every baby will be different. Everything will be just fine. Try to relax and enjoy these last few weeks.
I had all 3 of my daughters 2 weeks early… never had to be in Nicu… 37 weeks and up are normally fine. 38 weeks is good too
My daughter was 36 weeks a d I had GD with her. She did not need the NICU even through she was on the small side (I also had IUGR). I also breastfed and had no problem. They did chexk her blood sugar several times a day while she was in the room with me.
I had gestational diabetes with my last as well. She came on her own at 37.5 weeks. She weighted 6lb 4oz. No NICU needed. She also latched on, no problem.
I was 37 weeks and gestational when I had my girl she was perfectly fine good weight she was able to latch on easily I guess it could depend on weight when your baby is born but usually when you are gestational babies tend to be a good weight at 37 weeks I hope this eases your worries and sending blessings for a safe delivery and healthy baby
As a mom of 3 premies, getting to 34 weeks was the goal. They generally have fewer troubles. And you are quicker to get to go home with them
There are babies born full term who may need the NICU. It all depends on how baby does!
Mine son was born at 37 weeks he was perfectly healthy and ate just fine
Depends on the situation and if the babies lungs have fully developed.
My oldest was born at 37 weeks and was fine. They kept us an extra day to be sure, but she stayed with me the whole time
37 weeks is not preterm. What determines your baby’s needs are his or her apgar scores, blood sugar, whether he or she swallowed meconium and need for oxygen etc. I would not worry about the need for NICU unless the baby has a particular issue upon giving birth. Prayers
For a smooth and healthy delivery❤️
It really depends on your baby but mine was born at 37 weeks after an amniocentesis that showed her lungs were ready. She had jaundice but no nicu.
Depends on complications. My last was born at 37wks and I took her home the next evening
At 37 weeks they are typically perfectly ready to be born. Being that you have gestational diabetes the baby is probably on the larger side anyway and nicu is determined usually on birth weight, unless there happens to be another issue at birth
There’s a lot of different factors to consider before they make that decision. In most cases, a healthy baby born at 37 weeks wouldn’t need a NICU stay
Both of my kids were born at 37 weeks, due to me being high risk. They both were in the nicu but not long. Maybe a day and a half?
Most likely not. Since you have gestational diabetes your baby will be a decent size by 37 or 38 weeks. You will most likely get 2 shots right before that will help with lung development. It is common practice to deliver a baby 37 weeks when there is uncontrolled gestational diabetes. Better for you and the baby
I had my daughter at 37 also got induce because of risk of still birth. She did not need to be in NICU
I had type 2 diabetes with mine and they were not going to let me go past 37 weeks but due to pre eclampsia he was born at 35 and 5 days. When he was very first born a team of NICU docs took him and checked him then brought him right back to me. 5lb 5ozes and fine.
It depends if the baby’s blood sugars are low. If they are too low they will put them in NICU until they can regulate their blood sugars. My daughter was born a month early and was there only a week. My next was there2 weeks. It all depends on the baby
Mine were both born at 37 weeks perfectly healthy
I had two emergency cesareans at 31 weeks and 33 weeks. With my 3rd the scheduled a c section at 37 weeks- I could not go longer due to possible hemorrhage due to how they cut with my first born. My first two were NICU babies and my 3rd came home. If breathing, feeding goes well baby will go home. I was high risk with all 3, cerclage, progesterone shots/pills, bicornuate uterus, ultra sounds every two weeks and medications for migraines and to stop contractions once I hit 20 weeks
My second baby was 37 weeks and we came home at 48 hours! Baby 3 was 35 weeks and only went to NICU for 24 hours then we came home. Even my 4th T 34 weeks was only in for 8 days before discharge. Praying for your babe to cook a lil longer and you both to be healthy!
I had 2 born at 37 weeks both healthy no NICU
My daughter was 37 weeks not need for nicu . Healthy baby
Mine son didn’t!!! I was exactly 37 weeks when I was induced… got shots in my booty to help his lungs… he was a healthy little mister
All three of mine were premature. My first was born at 34 1/2 weeks, second at a little over 35 weeks, and my third was at 37 weeks. Not one of mine needed to go to the NICU.
I had my son at 35 weeks and he was only 4 pounds and 9 ounces and he went home with me two days later!! Stayed in the room with me!! No NICU!! Breathing on his own and everything!!
My son was induced week 38. He was 8lbs6oz. I had gestational diabetes and toxemia. He did fine. No NICU.
It depends on the baby but they won’t even consider the baby a premie at 37weeks none of mine made it past 36 weeks and all mine were healthy and came home on time
My niece was induced at 38 weeks mom and baby perfectly healthy no NICU
start pumping now so that when hes born you’ll be producing enough so that his blood sugar wont drop,…this is recommended with gd babies that are breast fed,…you will produce colostrum until the baby is a few weeks old, so dont worry, but save it all,… when frozen colostrum is yellow, dont worry,…
My daughter was just born at 36+5 and she had high bilirubin and her sugars were high at birth and i had to have her c section but she came home on day 3day with me and only went back over night a week later to have the blue light for the bilirubin. My milk took a while to come in and is not fully what I had with my son who was over due by a week but we are working on it. Hang in there i am sure he will be fine.
My boys were born at 34 weeks …but we’re almost 9 lbs 22 inches and came home two days later…both perfectly healthy
My daughter was born 35weeks 4 days. They required her to go to NICU for observation but she was never officially admitted and we went home in 48hrs. I had emergency c. Had a very hard time with latching but we found she had a tongue tie
My 37weeker wasn’t in the NICU. We did have tons of latching problems. They also originally heard gurgling in his chest when he was born. But it went away same day.
I had my twins at 32 weeks. My son weighed 5lbs 1oz my daughter weighed 4 lbs 12oz what helped me was Boost protein shakes for them to put on weight. I knew they would come early so I prepared them and myself. My doctor told me that it was absolutely fine to drink a few a week.
I had 3 of my kids at 38 weeks exactly n they all fine never needed NICU was treated like a full term baby
No question about an early baby is stupid. It all depends on how developed his lungs are. He should have no problems. Many babies are born at this time and they are fine. Just to be sure, I will pray for him and you too. God has it all in His hands. God loves babies.
My daughter was born at 35 weeks 5 days was in NICU for 4 days. Now is a healthy 7 year old
My daughter was born at 37 weeks. She came home at 2 days old and is now a very beautiful, very TALL 15 yr old
Most of the time if you have GD, they decide when they will induce according to how fast the baby is growing. Usually the baby is ok to be born as early as 35- 36 wks without NICU care, but every situation is different. I had GD but controlled it with diet and didn’t have to take meds. Our child was born at 38 weeks
It depends on how develop the baby’s lungs are. My son came almost two weeks early so he was about 38 weeks and when they did the amnio they said his weren’t but within just a couple of days he was breaking my water himself and he was absolutely fine so it depends on the state of the lungs and the baby’s weight among other things but generally if the baby is healthy and you’re healthy, No it should not need NICU. But always talk to your doctor and find out what their projections are.
My 1st was induced at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia. He was 5lb 11oz and no NICU. My second I also had a 37 weeks due to preterm labor. 6lb 14 oz and no NICU!
Mine were full term but only 4lbs 14oz and 5lbs and 12oz, they are both at the top of their classes and are good athletes. They may have been small but they were fearless! They are now 5’8" girl at her full size 17yrs old and 5’10" boy and still growing taller 16yrs old
Both my youngest babies were induced at 37 weeks. Neither were in NICU and were healthy.
It just depends. My daughter was born at 39 weeks and had to go to the NICU for 14 days due to we both had an infection when she was born.
My oldest son was born at 36 weeks exactly and didn’t need NICU he weighed 5 lbs 13 oz so I think it may just depends on if baby needs any help once here v
I had gestational diabetes (I didn’t use met. nor insulin, I was able to control with diet), was induced at 38weeks, she was 5.13lbs. No NICU needed, breastfeeding great.
My son was born 4 day before his due date! And they put him in the NICU! I have all that you have wrong so yes! It’s for the babies health!
My first was 37 weeks and was 6 pounds 14 oz perfectly healthy
Mine was 37 weeks and he was perfectly healthy.
My daughter was at 37 weeks because of gestational diabetes she was 9 lbs and 24 inches perfectly fine no issues at all…easiest labor of all 3 of my pregnancies…I was induced early because of her size and she was perfect
My daughter was 36 weeks and she was fine she didn’t spend anytime in the nicu and went home with me and she weighed 5.5lbs…and she breast fed just fine for 11 months… don’t stress yourself out every baby and pregnancy is different… prayers for u and your baby🙏🏽 u got this💕
My son was 37 weeks he didn’t have to go to NICU I think it depends on they’re weight and stuff
It really just depends on the baby.
My 34 weeker was very sick and in the NICU for 2 weeks. But my 36 weeker was healthy for the most part and got to go home the day after I had him.
1st…you do not sound stupid! You asked a group of mom’s a sincere question regarding the health of your baby, this is exactly what the group is for. 2nd) 37 weeks is fine, I had gestational diabetes with my first born and other than a little jaundice he was perfectly fine. It is most likely they want to induce at 37 weeks to get you off the insulin 5 times a day and also may be because babies tend to be larger. Relax Love and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy…wishing you a safe, peaceful delivery
had gd with my last son. gave birth at 32 weeks 6 days they have no clue why, i was in labor for over 72 hours with him. he was born almost 5 pounds stayed in the nicu for 1 month
37 weeks is still considered a full term baby. I had my youngest son at 36 weeks. He was 7.9 oz and 19.5 inches long. Perfectly healthy. He latched right away
The concern isn’t necessarily so much delivering at 37 weeks per se, but how your baby processes your high blood sugars and insulin. Keep in mind, babies produce their own insulin as a result from high blood sugars crossing through the placenta. So If high blood sugar is not managed, there are times babies go to NICU for low blood sugar issues or possibly respiratory issues.
Prayers everything goes smooth sailing!
All three of my kids were born at 37 and 38 weeks and they didn’t go to nicu they were healthy
I had my last at 35 weeks and 4 days she was a bit small but fine! No nicu. Just a tanning booth for some jsundice a few days later;)
My daughter was born at 37 weeks, no problems. My son at 36 weeks and he was in the NICU for a week
Had my last 3 at 35 weeks and none of them needed the NICU. But my niece had to with hers being at 37 weeks with preeclampsia.
He should be fine! Trust your Dr. there should be no reason that he shouldn’t be able to breastfeed. Be patient and all should be well. God bless you on your new joy!!!
My two youngest kids were both born at 37 weeks. One weighed 6 lbs 14 oz, the other 6 lbs 8 oz. Both were healthy, breastfed babies with no difficulties or NICU stays.
My niece was just born at 37 weeks weighed 6lbs came home the next day and is doing great and she is breastfed latched right on and this is her 4th child
My 3rd was born at 37 weeks because of hypertension. She was perfectly healthy.
I had a baby at 37 weeks and 4 days but she weighed over 6 pounds with fully developed lungs. We were in the hospital for 3 days and we came home together.
My oldest daughter was born at 27 weeks and needed to stay in the NICU for 2 months before coming home. 37 weeks is a good gestation, your baby will do good don’t worry mom.
You never know, honestly. My 39 weeker who never showed signs of anything being wrong spent 2 months in the NICU. My 37 weeker came home after 26 hours of being born.
I was induced with my first at 36 weeks and he was 7.3lbs came home with baby 24 hours later and the second I was induced at 37 weeks she was 6lbs and came home after 48hrs! 37 weeks is considered full term btw…
I had my oldest at 35 weeks no icu he was there for 3 hrs to be monitored but returned to me in 3 hrs with perfect health. Just depends on the baby I’m guessing
I had my daughter at 37 weeks and 5 days and she was perfectly healthy and was able to leave hospital with her 4 days later after having her
I had gestational diabetes and placenta previa so i had emergency c-section at 37 weeks and they put my bany in the NICU for 16days.i started breasffeeding after few a week he was born.and now my baby is healthy and chunky, hes turning 1 next month.i will keep u in my prayers…
I have 2 of my 3 at 37 weeks and I think as long as there breathing on there own with no difficulty and there healthy they don’t need to be… mine Weren’t
It depends. Every baby is different. My oldest born 37 weeks 5.13lbs but no NICU time. My 2nd 36 weeks and 6.8lbs and no NICU time.
Had my first son at 36 weeks and my second at 37 weeks. Both great besides some jaundice
I have type 1 diabetes and both babies delivered at 38 weeks, no probs, they made sure lungs were developed 1st
Depends on your baby, every one is different. My first son was born at 33 weeks and was only in the NICU for a month… they grow and develop slower out of the womb so he went home at 37 weeks. He also did way better than they expected. He was 5lbs 2oz when he was born, i saw a 33 week baby that was only 2 lbs 6 oz. It just depends. I also had gestational diabetes with him but was controlled by diet and I have it with this one and am trying to avoid insulin so they just put me on glyberide or something. But my 33 week boy (they say girls do much better than boys) only needed the cpap for 3 days then a low flow of oxygen for about a week, so I think you should be fine.
I had one born at 36 weeks, 35wks, one 30 weeks. All were good. The 30 week one didnt go to NICU and got to go home on time but could not suck well. Lost down to 4 lbs from 6.2lbs. She has recovered well. 15 yrs later. My 36 a d 35 weeks were great. Both had APGAR scores of 10
