How can I help my 13-year-old stop wetting the bed?

Alot of kids have smaller bladders for most the childhood and never know which leads to bedwetting long into teen years then some.
Some females stop wetting the bed after periods start. Could be all kinds of things.

alsoā€¦bed wetting can be a sign the child is being molestedā€¦so better start listening if the child tells you something you dont want to hearā€¦if youve ruled out all other reasonsā€¦time to send kid to a counselor tooā€¦just in case

Amy chance of abuseā€¦ or stressā€¦

I wet the bed for years and my mum did the same then I had some invasive testing and found out I donā€™t have the valve between my bladder and I think my urethra- once we figured that out mum was able to adjust everything and I had a sensor mat I slept on, I also remember (not sure if itā€™s related) having horrible nightmares where I could feel I was asleep but I was dreaming I was going to the toilet and couldnā€™t tell the difference between the dream and reality.

It could be from some sort of traumaā€¦ it could be laziness (js this because my friends brother did this because he didnā€™t want to get out of bed), I peed the bed until I was 14, turns out I had vesicoureteral reflux and a urethra the size of a needle. My parents never had me checked before because my mom had wet the bed until she was ten or so and she grew out of it. Anywayā€¦ kidneys ended up being severely damaged for letting it go for so longā€¦ if you havenā€™t already Iā€™d take her to see a urologistā€¦ if that checks out possibly a psychologist or counselorā€¦ have you asked her about it?

Is there something bothering them at night like night terrors? My son went through a spell of this and took him to Drs and they gaslighted me on it. Finally I sat down and really talked with him and he told me heā€™d been having night terrors about me and his siblings getting murdered in front of him and it scared him too much to talk about and he was embarrassed that he was scared and wetting the bed.

i wet the bed until i was about 8/9 maybe 10ā€¦ no trauma, abuse or stress. i had a great childhood. i had nothing wrong medically either, i was just lazy and couldnā€™t be arsed getting out of bed to go to the toilet :joy: my mum or siblings would have to physically wake me and take me, and not everything is trauma/abuse related guys.

Sounds like its coming from trauma.

Go to another doctor and specialist. Second and third opinions wouldnā€™t hurt.

Have their hormones checked. Theres a hormone that sends a signal to wake you to go, if itā€™s low and they are a deep sleeper, that could be the problem. They make needs to even it out. Trauma is another reason. If youā€™ve been to the Dr. With no results, maybe a second opinion. Iā€™m not a dr., just offering suggestions.

Coming from a child with type 1 diabetes I would get her sugar checked. He wet the bed every night until he was diagnosed and started insulin. Please have that checked!

Ask to be referred to the Enuresis team for assessment and treatment, I am going through this with my child of 12.5yrs, currently on medication, when they took a bladder scan it showed he has a small bladder only able to hold 65ml his current treatment is to drink 1400mls a day to encourage the bladder to expand therefore increasing capacity. Review in 2 months

Wake your child up before you go to sleep and then during early morning to get them to go to the toilet.

I had a friend who just stopped naturally at 16

Do the reverse, my daughter has a weak bladder, little and often to drink was the advise given by her bladder specialist and it really helped. BUT.Try understanding if this issue is because of a bladder issue or ongoing mental health problems, a major sign of mental health issues in children and young adults is bed wetting. Please see your Dr or gp again regardless, you can can have a health professional talk with them or if it is still bladder related, she may need an operation to her valve

I have to set a timer for about 2 hours after she falls asleep. Make sure she spreads her knees all the way apart pants or panties should be all the way to the floor and make sure to tell her to let it flow naturally NEVER push to pee. Dont discourage when she has accidents an encourage and congratulate when she makes progress cut off drinks or foods 1 hour before bed. Whats been working well for me is the waking her up and forcing her out of bed 2 hours after she falls asleep yes it sucks but eventually she will start waking up on her own. Give her words of encouragement like i know you can do this or i know tonight youre not going to have an accident. My girl is 7 and her doc said its common up until 15 believe it or not. Make sure theres plenty of lighting she mqy be scared of the dark. Its hard but dont give up keep telling her its ok.

Have they done tests to see if its overactive

Have u been to a bladder physio therapy

Dr. Visit. My son wet the bed until he was 13. He had testicular issues. Boy or girl a medical professional should be consulted.

Try the dry buddy system. Itā€™s a little plastic piece that magnetically snaps into your undies. It signs an alarm when you start peeing. I was well into my teens and was still wetting the bed with no reason to why and no way to help me stop till we tried it. Tried it one time and never peed the bed again.

Does your child have a condition like adhd or autism?

Talk to a phychologist.

My son is 7 and also struggles with thisā€¦Almost every night he has a wet bedā€¦Still deciding on whether to have a dr visit or not :pensive:

Maybe find a new doctor. That is almost always a sign of significant trauma.

My son is 16 and still has this problem. Been through it all. No, cutting back on fluids doesnā€™t work. Setting a timer throughout the nights doesnā€™t work. No, he has never experienced any trauma. Doctor thought maybe diabetes but that tested negative so I was told it would end naturally, which at this age seems ridiculous. Weā€™ve spent so much money on beds and sheets, etc.

If there is no medical reason and you have been to doctors etc, just throwing this out there but itā€™s a major sexual abuse sign.

I saw an ad for a system called TheraPee I think - I believe it works with an alarm or something like that

Does your child by chance snore? My son was wetting the bed at least 3 times a week. When he was 6, he had to have his tonsils and adenoids taken out (not related to bed wetting, a separate thing). But at one of his follow ups a couple months later I mentioned the to Dr that it could be a coincident, but once tonsils and adenoids were outā€¦ he stopped wetting the bed. The doctor then told me about the info that I will post below.

Please make sure thereā€™s no medical issueā€¦ Iā€™m talking from personal experienceā€¦

My daughter is 11 and still does this doctor said itā€™s normal. I tried everything too.

Check child for sugar diabetes, my grandson was diagnosed at 10 yrs old

I hate talking about this.
I wet the bed until I was 11. I literally could not control it. I didnā€™t wake up to go because I never felt it coming.
My parents brought me to children specialists, including a urologist and kidney.
We found out I have bladder reflux, also a damaged kidney. The doctor was a godsend. He prescribed me some kind of pill that worked magic. I stopped wetting the bed.

My son did it till about 9/10 and he wore pull ups for older kids to save the mattresses! He had a weak bladder and was a mouth breather so needed to drink often,dr said he would eventually out grow it and he did! It was a long stressful process on us both!

Chiropractor. Canā€™t stress this enough. It will end there.

He might soon grow out of it. I have a family member who use to wet the bed till they were about 13-14. Mom did everything she could to help but I wanna say puberty mightā€™ve been the actual stop to it. I could be wrong though :woman_shrugging:t4: but I wish you both the best of luck and hope someoneā€™s answer may help you!

She could just have a small bladder and will eventually stop doing that

See a Neurologist to make sure he dies have issues some kids have immature bladders.

We get our son up at 1am every night to go. He does have a rare enlarged prostateā€¦rare because his age and they didnā€™t even look at whyā€™s until I told them they WILL

Sometimes an immature bladder is responsible.

Set your alarm every few hours get him up and make him go wonā€™t take long for him to realize donā€™t drink much after dinner and to get sleep get up and go they donā€™t want to get out of warm bed, throw covers off and get him up to go,hard on you but will work

Bedwettingshop.com. my son is 9 and wears pull-ups every night and theyā€™re soaking wet. Weā€™ve been trying thr sleep alarm and it has been amazing. No pull ups. Just underwear, it wakes the kid up as soon as it feels one drop of liquid. It takes up to 6 weeks it says to help them conquer it. Weā€™re on week 1.

stretching the bladder making up a 2L jug of water to drink through out the day holding as much as they can before going to the bathroom then stop drinking an hour or two before bed

Thereā€™s an sensor like an alarm you put under his sheets I believe and the alarm will sound if he wets the bed. It worked for our family member.

It is common especially if either parent were bed wetters my mother was told with a sibling that it should stop either when puberty started or God forbid but if female once they conceive . He was right though .

Sometimes it can be medical or because the child is unsure or overthinks it to or sometimes best to say nothing to them just ā€œitā€™s okā€ and just fix the bedding up for them as from experience being hard on the subject want help. There are many factors besides fluids and other things but your not alone I have 6 kids all were but 2

What happens is the body is growing faster than the bladder. Itā€™s very common. & Runs in some families.

When you go then wake them up to go & hope their internal clock kicks in & wake them up when needing to go.

Set a timer so they get up in the middle of the night to go pee

If you havenā€™t tried waking him up to go use the bathroom again about an hour after he goes to sleep. It helps train their brain to break REM sleep to awaken to use the bathroom. Iā€™ve done it when potty training my kids and they are not wetting the bed at night anymore after about 2 weeks.

I had this problem and nothing worked for me.
It was embarrassing :flushed: but it did stop when i got my first period.

My step daughter (12) had bed wetting issues and when she was finally able to go to the dr they found out she was diabetic. Once her sugars and everything were better she stopped.

I have this one for my son. Heā€™ll stop peeing for months and then have accidents here and there. I have tried so many things and this is the only thing I have found that works. Good luck!!

He also uses these and sleeps on them just in case he has an accident.

Itā€™s the worst, mine didnā€™t stop totally til I was 16!! I have a 13 year old son who still struggles now as well.

I know up until I was 11 Iā€™d wet the bed. I remember many times but not always of a dream I was actually on the toilet peeing so of course Iā€™d pee in my sleep. That may be happening there. Have your child go pee right before getting in the bed. Like literally right before.

I was a bed wetter, I believe it was due to abuse I suffered as a child. Maybe seek a therapist.
Mine stopped at 14

Iā€™d say possibly diabetes. Hugs to her! :hugs::heart:

I had a younger child who wet the bed. We had a book called ā€œdry all nightā€ which helps teach bladder control.

Dry All Night: The Picture Book Technique That Stops Bedwetting https://smile.amazon.com/dp/0316542253/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_JKF3N32ATKZVCS59Q1G0

Heā€™s 13 he might need to start yanking it

I wet the bed until late 3rd grade early 4th grade. Dream catchers helped, not drinking at night before bed. I eventually grew out of it even if it took me a minute. I was proud of myself lol. I usually can hold my bladder until morning now, but on some occasions Iā€™ll wake up through the night if I absolutely need to go

Set an alarm and have them go to the bathroom every two hours. Also they make bed wetting alarms. Get one it will save your life. Took two weeks for my kid and no more bedwetting

We woke up my grandson to go like 1:00 am and then he got use to it and went on his own. Or set a alarm.

Walmart has patches & otc pills 4 women 2 ā€œgo lessā€. Ask dr about

Following! A friend of mine was also going through the same thing as you and I, and they went too many doctors and finally a doctor told them that she was having bowel issues! The witch was pushing on her bladder if itā€™s causing UTI and stuff like that and her to pee all the time even at night! Apparently itā€™s all fixed up now!

Try a alarm clock at half way through the night more. Our. Less

I was a bed wetter :weary::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: when I was young. I had to have several cystoscopes over the years. Itā€™s an out patient procedure to help.

get condom cathater and a uninal bag for sleep this may b a problum all his life but i had a friend he was about 16 when he stopped

I would try and see if it is happening around the same time every night. Mine was after about 5 hours of sleep. So I set an alarm to go at 4 hours. It is worth a shot. Bed pads can help with the wash. Your kiddo is in my prayers. I understand how emotionally frustrating it can be and how embarrassing it makes kids feel. I was on meds, timers, shocking systems (it was a while ago), pull ups, and finally was able to control it with figuring out the timing. I also didnā€™t drink fluids after 6pm.

l get paid over $125 per hour working from home. l never thought Iā€™d be able to do it but my buddy makes over $15126 a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The possibility with this is endless.

Doctors should always do a blood sugar check. Itā€™s a simple finger prick that can determine a serious medical condition.

One of my kids had this problem and it was low blood sugar so a high protein snack before bed. Surgery level was low enough that was in a very deep sleep so didnā€™t wake to the urge to go

Time. Literally time. It took my now 16 yr old until he was about 12 to stop. Some take longer some donā€™t. Idk. My younger brother wet to bed until he was about 14.

Set alarm for 2am ā€¦ pp breakā€¦

Take them to a very good Chinese herbalist. My son was instantly cured. It was issues with his kidneys. It was incredible as I took him for a skin problem and she just looked at him and straight away said - he has kidney problems- does he wet the bed! I was stunned!

He or she might be a very sound sleeperā€¦

What type of medicine? The only one that worked for my son was Desmopressin. He was a super heavy sleeper and it worked wonders for him.

They are sleeping too soundly. Try waking them up in the night to go to the bathroom.

You might try a psychologist and hypnosis. People have stopped smoking and all sorts of things with that. A post-hypnotic suggestion that he wake up and go to the bathroom when his bladder feels full may do the trick.

Go to restroom before bed and again at midnight. This helped some of my patients

My friends sister had a similar problem and all her mom could do was wake up every hour and take her to the bathroom eventually the sister started waking up to an alarm on her tablet and then eventually she wasnā€™t wetting the bed anymore.

Diabetes will do this. My sister wet the bed till she was older . Had kidney problems from diabetes

Get up 2 or 3 times a night, just as many times that you would change a baby diaper. As needed.

Does his bladder need to be stretched. What did the urologist say . If 1 dr. Doesnā€™t work keep trying his bladder needs to be stretched. .maybe an alert system.
