How can I treat constipation in toddlers?

Saaame, my daughter has this issue too. She’s 19 months and I battled it with her as soon as she was switched to whole milk (before y’all say anything about breastfeeding I was an undersupplier) I went through arguments with who is no longer her pediatrician because she wanted to give her miralax and I told her I didn’t want to mask the problem I wanted to resolve it. Now 19 months old she’s drinking tons of water, has switched to 2% organic milk, takes a probiotic at night and sometimes has Activia yogurt too and I’m happy to say she’s regular for the most part!

If your LO isn’t a picky eater I made the suggestion to my best friend and it worked! Make blueberry bran muffins the little tiny 2 bite ones! The bran will help soften the bowels and get things moving! Also cut back on the juice and start watering it down half and half! Kids don’t need that much sugar!

She may be actually doing the exact opposite… she may be actually holding in her poop and it looks like their pushing but indeed holding it in and in turn causing constipation. Due to the colon being a muscle it’ll stretch and then hurt to push out… My son had this problem around age 2-3.

Give her some cola work wonderfully

My dad says oatmeal with honey and cinnamon in it every day. My sister says probiotic daily. My daughter takes miralax daily

Brendon N Chandra you had this prob with Sophia, right?

My daughter is the same. She only drinks water and has to have fruit or graham crackers every day or she gets blocked up. Graham crackers work very fast…
If it gets too bad, I have to give miralax.

Take her to a stomach specialist

We used to give my daughter a tsp of benefiber mixed with water when she was having trouble going, we called it “poopy water” :joy: Worked like a charm!

High fiber! Push the fiber! Oatmeal, high fiber bread, fiber bars… etc. Lits of fruit and veggies if she will eat it.

Prune juice or pepper mint water. Both of these worked for my children and grandchildren.

Have her some coffee and see what happens.

Give her plum juice… mix it with water… works wonders… hope that helps

My daughter has had problem since birth. Miramax has never worked. As she got older she could feel it’s texture in the drink and would refuse to drink any thing from me. I have tried every benefiber product out there found out she can’t drink milk or soy during our trials. To get a good smooth easy to poop I found Larabar Fruit and Nut bar you can get them at Kroger/ Fred Meyers, Walmart I get them on Base cheapest. About a dollar. My daughter can’t have candy so we call them candy bars. They are Gluten free, Vegan, Dairy free, Soy free, Non-GMO natural sugar a little high in sugars because of the fruit. As long as they can have NUTs you are ok. I also go to Vitamin store for probiotics one in Jar Something Gut about $34.00 . She recently had a problem with toxic chemicals in her blood and only way to get them down was to cause diarrhea. I increased my treatments of these products along watered down cranberry apple juice. I also give her lemon water. But I don’t think you can give babies lemon water you can check with doctor. It is natural way to loose poop. But I would never give it to baby without asking doctor is really acidy could cause acid reflux. My daughter is older I have been doing this since 6 years old per doctor. I don’t think the Larabar would hurt them. But check some doctors don’t like probiotics. LOTS OF WATER. We are not doctors always check with your doctor before you do anything. My daughter doesn’t like water so I call it H2O we have a dance and song to encourage her to drink it. To much sugar can cause problems too

Prune juice!!! not just any juice.
More veggies and less cheese in her diet.

Put more fiber in her diet , but for immediate relief I used to give my kids watered down prune juice

Too much juice (and other preserved foods and drinks) can have the opposite effect
Plenty of water, fresh apples, and prune baby food pouches help my daughter who is also 2. sometimes i sake up the prune purée with a tiny bit of honey in water to make a juice out of it she used to get constipated regularly now if I notice her too far off her normal “schedule” I give her some prune “juice” and an apple as a snack just in case, and she doesn’t have problems any more.

When I was researching (when my daughter was struggling regularly) I read that some store bought apple sauces don’t really don’t really help with constipation because of the preservatives if a fruit has any preservatives other than lemon juice it’s not likely to help

If nothing works you may want to research other dietary changes that will help. There are also herbal teas that help if you haven’t tried that

Pineapple juice helps! Also ask her pediatrician about miralax

Find a new pediatrician

I all ways used the clear Karo Syrup

Also try switching to soy milk

Go see a pediatrician. Your kiddo could be holding in her bowel movements out of fear of the pain but then it causes the problem she is trying to avoid. There is a product to add to fluids that bulks up stools by retaining more water in the bowels and helps with resetting the system.

More water, fruits and veggies. Prune juice as needed for no bm every other day but a can is too much. I use 1/2 can if needed. And add probiotics either from yogurt or yakult drinks.

Have her checked for something that’s called delayed gastro empty it does require xrays but it could open a door to insight for you and ask for a gi consult from your ped.

Get her probiotic vitamins

My oldest daughter had that issue too. I give her those little probiotics drinks. Yakult. They’re by the yogurt section. Just one a day.

I used prune juice or karo syrup with my kids. With My Granddaughter I will give her an apple and she will go pretty quickly after and she loves apples so it’s perfect. Also just water!! Water helps…

You could try removing dairy for 2 weeks and see if that makes a difference. If it does great you know, if doesn’t at least it was a cheap thing to try while waiting on a gastrointestginalist appointment. They know more specifics that the general ped doesn’t necessarily know as in depth.

One fiber one bar daily and miralax daily. Both of my kids have the same problem.

Lots of water n maybe a new pediatrician

Molasses always worked with my kids.

Try prunes or prune juice. Also graham crackers and granny smith apples help, make stool softer. Try to avoid dairy, cheese, bananas, or other foods that bind you up.

Three of my children suffered with bad constipation from a very early age and were put on Lactulose by the doctor. It isn’t a laxative it softens the poo and makes it easier for them to pass.

My daughter was that way. Did several medical tests. Nothing. Neighbor recommend chiropractic . Turn out she had pinch nerve to the colan. Also turn out all her ear infections was as also related to pinch nerves. No 3rd set of ear tubes and became regular after a few adjustments. Now the whole family go, when we feel out of wrack.

Lots of water and they do make a stool softener for kids

I give my kid a fiber one brownie for dessert at lunch if he gets constipated. Exercise like going up and down stairs with them or running around the park tends to help things move along more naturally too. Dehydration can also cause constipation so make sure LO gets lots of water along with that juice.

Get her checked for ibsC

My SIL had her little girl on a very low dose of LaxADay. Just dilute a small amount in a cup of water. Helps to soften things up. Has done wonders for her!

Prunes juice add in milk or juice but it helped a lot with my baby

Try putting a little mineral oil in her juice or a little Karo syrup the mineral oil is tasteless hope this helps

Prebiotic drops help a lot

Stop the juice and give more water. The sugar in juice and whatever else she has during the day can block her up. I had to really watch how much sugar my daughter has bc if she has to much she will get backed up. Shes 9 now, but we finally got it under control when she was 2

Fiber powder in OJ with breakfast

I mixed fiber powder in my daughter’s juice it helped her regulate

She needs water and probiotics, fiber , also does she eat alot of cheese , rice or drink cows milk ?

Take her to a specialist & don’t mess around with your primary care provider especially if they act like they don’t care

Try mixing Miralax in with her juice

Use filtered water not tap, and you can massage the lower abdomen area to help the poop move through, use good pressure.

Oh and NO PROCESSED food no McDonalds chicken nuggets or flash frozen foods from the store. We taken a chicken breast and make homemade nuggets.

little know fact your body can become dependent on stool softeners and laxatives. Its all about diet

Water Oatmeal Fiber! Start slow and be patient, sounds like she made need more fiber in her diet.
Less sugar also helps.
So lots of water, oatmeal, less sugar and more fiber.

Liquid first, metamucil for kids, prunes, prune juice, and plenty of roughage. Carrots tomatoes salad use plenty of dressing or dip. Dont worry about much she dips its about the amount of roughage.

Go to a different dr. They have baby laxative medicine. My step son takes it and he’s 1

Miralax will help.put it her juice and prune juice

Culturelle kids regularity us what we use

Organic diet and chiropractor! It’s done wonders in all 3 of my kids who suffered miserably. The only thing drs offered us were over the counter medication that worked sometimes.

Prune juice. My 1 year old has the same problem. Prune juice helps alot

All of these people saying miralax need to do some serious research before telling people to give there kids that poison. Join the group parents against miralax, you’ll find out what it does to children and great ways to help with constipation in children

Have her eat a prune and drink some water to wash it down about an hour before bedtime…cut it up in tiny pieces so she doesn’t choke

Oatmeal, applesauce, apples, salads if she will eat them (my kids loved carrots)

Water down her juice. Prune juice too. Suppository will help

Pear juice will make them go every time

Go see a gastroenterologist (GI specialist) my daughter went 17 days with out pooping while being greasy fed and hers was always rock hard and you would have to push her legs up and help her get it out. She is on a medicine now and we don’t have to use it too much anymore. After a year.

Seriously, I would give my boys Kayro syrup. It works Everytime.

My son had the same problem. Lots of fresh veggies and fruits. More water, juice is good for occasional constipation but not long term, it just causes other issues. Try Miralax, you will need to play with the dosage until you find what works for her.

My parents would have me drink that metamucil fiber stuff when I was little but I’m not sure if that’s recommended for small children now. It wouldn’t hurt to add more fiber to her diet in any way you can. Also probiotics help keep the good bacteria in balance in the gut which should help too

Do a kids probiotic by Garden of Life! I worked at a natural store for years and it fixed every child and helped with acid reflux, allergies, focus, and eczema and psoriasis! No negative side effects at all. I would go with this brand though.

Graham crackers help constipation, give pedialyte to help hydrate, also could try culturally to regulate

Water she needs more water

Overnight oatmeal go on line so many different ones you can make its easy and it works pretty much for everyone. I wish you luck if these things don’t work perhaps she’s lactose intolerant?? My daughter was and she had to have prune juice worked but like you said diarrhea so we took her off dairy for a year. Try almond milk or coconut if you want to see if it makes difference.

Kayro syrup. If it don’t work then try pro biotic supplements and then if that don’t work maybe have her go to a different doctor

My baby sister used to do this. We started giving her lots and lots of fresh fruits and veggies and also flax seed. It helped her!!! Good luck!

Probiotics for kids help a lot!

Fruit an water. If she won’t drink water put a little sugar in it

Get prunes…sweet gooey and yummy

Try prune juice.or pumpkin not pie filling.

My daughter has this issue too, I stick to watering down her juice, so more than half is water, helps soften the stools.

Probiotic drops, prune juice and apple sauce. Also lots of water

Maltsuplex, sauerkraut, sauerkraut juice, more water and fiber

My daughter was the same way. The dr said to make sure she ate plenty of prunes (juice), peaches, and plums. My daughter never drank enough which is a problem too. I found cereal that was high in fiber and gave it to her as a dry snack. That helped a lot. She loved frosted mini wheats.

Apples and pears have fibre prune juice anything with fibre oats, porridge, bran

Just about any fruit starting with P is well known to ease constipation. Also knowing what foods tend to constipate my little guy helps. A LITTLE BIT of miralax in a glass of water can also help and is generally safe.

Try getting more fiber in her diet, stuff like broccoli and whole grains help

My now 3 year old was like this when she turned a year my pediatrician told us to use miralax it helped so much she never got diarrhea or anything just softened it enough so it didnt hurt her.

My daughter had issues but she was a holder so she would stop herself up by not going when she felt the urge. We would give (not all at the same time, these are just things we tried over the years) her mineral oil, prunes, prune juice, and sometimes suppositories.

I have heard from my daughter that her doctor told her to use miralax for my 16 month old grandaughter

My son takes a stool softener prescribed by his dr. since he was 1 yo, he’s now 2 and a half. It helps alooot. We tried several times to stop it but he will be again extremely constipated and cry from pain everytime he wants to poop. So dr said keep giving him. Talk with the dr about it. In my country its called “ Laxbene “

Add miralax to her juice everyday … not every drink try once a day if it doesn’t help twice a day. Should soften it to make it easier to come out

Massage her tummy lightly in a clockwise direction with coconut oil when constipated. Any food starting with P. Pears Prunes - mashed pumpkin too.

get squash into her diet…yes miralax in usa… restoralax canada it does work, try once a day in smaller doses increase if needed…takes about two days to see results. has no taste, mix with any drinks . I dissolve it in about an ounce of warm water first, then add my drink. good luck

My son had this problem… Ask your dr. For a presciption of Peglight… U mix it with juice… She’ll take it on the daily basis and it works well. My son was on this for afew years… They still havent found out why he has this problem…

Karo syrup works in milk. Then apple juice. Apple juice with meals
