How do you count calories when you are out to eat?

Ive recently started counting my calories. How do I count calories while eating at a restaurant? My husband and I travel alot and he’s a big foodie so we eat out often while out of town.

A lot of places now place calories on their menus

My fitness pal app has the majority of restaurants in their system. Easy tracker for calories and macros

Go for lean meats, fish, lots of vegetables. Also in the U.S. I usually order a to-go box and immediately put in half the protein and carbs. I add fruits and vegetables later for one or more additional meals. Generally you don’t want to eat a piece if meat, poultry or fish bigger than your fist.

Avoid cream soups and sauces, choose vinaigrette vs. creamy salad dressings. Mediterranean (including Greek) and Japanese cuisines are some of the healthiest. If you can choose whole grains (like quinoa, grits, corn, whole wheat pasta) do so, and brown vs. white rice.

Skip sugary sodas (even diet ones are bad for you), and stick to water, unsweetened teas (often there’s quite a variety of hot teas you can order iced), and lighter alcoholic drinks like dry white wines or gin and tonics. You can make an unsweetened wine spritzer with an order each of seltzer or sparkling water and a glass of wine. Too often the already prepared ones have fruit juice (natural, but still quite the hit of sugar) or other sweeteners.

If you have small plates or tapas restaurants this can help with eating less.
