How many mamas have a baby with a tongue tie?

How many moms have had babies with a tongue tie? I recently found out that my two weeks old has a minor tongue tie. And I was wondering how many parents have treated the tongue tie and how many parents have left it be and had it loosen on its own. And did you have issues breastfeeding with leaving it untreated? Thank you!

My son was tongue tied. As for breastfeeding Iā€™m not sure, my kid was bottle fed and it caused him to be a very messy eater because he couldnā€™t get a good grip on the nipple. It causes speech issues. He had to have it corrected at 2.5. Honestly I would just have it fixed now. It harder as they get older.

I couldnā€™t breastfeed my daughter because of her tongue tie. We had it corrected in the office however she didnā€™t want to latch after that. So happy healthy bottle fed baby :sparkling_heart:

Son has a small tongue tie on bottom. Have left it alone. He does have a small lisp though. And obsessed with a binky still

My daughter was when she was born, took 5 minutes in ear, nose, throat doctors office and its never been an issue since.

My first did dr said normally it breaks itself but we had to snip it when he was almost 2

Mine did, he was killing my nipples. They snipped it super quick and he didnā€™t cry (3 maybe 4 days old?) immediately better.

Grandson was tongue tied had trouble nursing had clipped five minutes and no further issues

My oldest has it but it hasnā€™t caused any major issues so his doctor just left it alone.

I have 2 boys and each are tongue tied, each breastfed. I didnā€™t do anything and they are perfect, no issues

My 5 year old daughter was tongue tied. Pretty badly. She had surgery for it when she was 4 a little over a year ago. She talks to much better!!! Definitely worth it!

My baby boy has a minor one from when he was born. I did breastfeed initially but then had to switch to bottles. No problems with drinking his milk but we were told as itā€™s only thin that hopefully it might break on its own when he starts solids :crossed_fingers:t2: heā€™s 19 weeks old at the minute xxxx

Both my kids were born with upper lip and posterior tongue ties. We chose to get them fixed as they can cause dental issues, apnea, speech issues, feeding issues, reflux, spinal issues, and more. To me id rather correct it now when they wonā€™t remember it and they recover super quick than having to go through actual surgery later in life with a longer recovery time.

My son was tongue tied. He couldnā€™t breastfeed at all. I got it clipped after 5 months of pumping and giving him a bottle. Now he is 16 months and going strong on breastfeeding

My son had a minor one. Didnā€™t affect breastfeeding at all, for us.

My 4th son was and still is tongue tied. We had it clipped around 2 months old but it healed back the same way. He talks perfectly fine at 3 years old now he just canā€™t stick his tongue out

My son did they clipped it when he was a few days old because he was having trouble eating, simple in and out the office in 30-45 mins

My son had a minor one. I talked to his pediatrician and she advised me against having it fixed as it wasnā€™t going to be that big of an issue

We didnā€™t catch my daughter till she was 6 months old and we corrected right away. It made a huge difference for her but she wasnt able to stick her tongue out at all before and we realized that is why she had such a hard time breastfeeding

My son had one, I thought it was the reason I was in so much pain during breastfeedingā€¦ but no I still had the paid and I had my boy go through that surgery for nothing. I felt horrible.

My son had grade 5 tongue and lip ties. Finally had them clipped at 3 months, helped a ton. Wish we had it done sooner so he could have latched.

I highly recommend joining this group as there of so much knowledge on tied babies and children in that group. Both of my children are tongue tied, and my son was lip tied until he face planted and ripped it. He basically fixed the problem himself lol. I chose not to have either of my childrenā€™s ties to be revised, as it is not always necessary. I feel that you will find the tongue tie support group helpful

My son has had one since birth. It didnā€™t affect him eating or his speech. So I just left it be

My daughter had one and she couldnā€™t latch well and she made a huge mess eating. Got it done and she didnā€™t even cry. Feeding was so much easier after.

My daughter had one, she was about 4 weeks old when we had the tie cut because she had a hard time latching correctly & it made a WORLD of difference breastfeeding. The procedure was soooo fast and she nursed within about 15 minutes after it and healed fully within 2 weeks. She was only cranky for about 2-3 days. The biggest thing is you have to do tongue exercises to keep it from reattaching, which we just did every time before she nursed and it was just fine. I highly recommend it if you are having any difficulties breastfeeding now. My daughter is now one and super vocal and loves to eat!

I never had my kids checked for one, but we had plenty of latch issues. My 13 month old still has latch issues. I even lost my supply with my first, but ended up breastfeeding him for about 23 months. Breastfeeding is more so about the commitment and dedication you put forth. Its a battle that you can definately overcome, no matter what. Goodluck <3

My son was born tongue tied. His was very severe. In the hospital, he was having trouble latching onto my nipple. The lactation consultant didnā€™t check to see if he was tongue tied. I was a first time mom and had I had never heard of it. I pumped in the hospital and bottle fed. I couldnā€™t afford to buy a pump so I gave him formula. When he was about a week old, I noticed his tongue when he was crying. His cry sounded very different because he couldnā€™t stick his tongue out. I told his Doctor at his first appointment. He didnā€™t seem concerned. I ended up changing his doctor to Childrenā€™s Hospital. They sent me to an Ear Nose and Throat Doctor right away. By then he was almost 6 months. He was still wearing 0-3 months clothing. He was not gaining enough waight. The ENT scheduled him a surgery date to get his tongue clipped. If they would have done it in the hospital when he was born or at the ENT office before he was 2 months old then they wouldnā€™t have needed to put him under anesthesia. After the procedure he was eating better and gaining waight.

My son had his fixed right away

We all have (my family and kids) the little string. My doctor told me we could clip it (i had never heard of this before) but he said it is now known to be more cosmetic, cuz ā€œtongue tiedā€ is outdated. I didnt even know there were people without it till i had my second child lol

All 3 my sons had. Breastfed successfully. Oldest one needs his cut now cause itā€™s cause problems with adult teeth coming out. No other issues with it.

My daughter had a very slight one. Her pediatrician told me it was up to me if I got it fixed or not, saying that if her tongue tie didnā€™t dissolve on its own, she would more than likely have a speech impairment later on in life. She wouldnā€™t stay latched on to my boob since day one, thatā€™s how it was found out she had the issue. I went ahead and got it fixed a couple weeks since they advised me that the longer I take fixing it, the more it could hurt her or have complications. The procedure is super simple. The only hard part is listening to your lil one fuss lol. They just numb the tongue up and clip the tie

My son has a tongue tie and he is 10 months and is breastfeeding just fine. His doctor said as long as he didnā€™t have trouble eating we would leave it.

GreatGranddaughter was born with her tongue tied. She is nearly 3 now, it has never been corrected but simply by nursing it has stretched itself and she is fine

My daughter had a tongue & a lip tie. It was not noticed until about 9 months. She was failure to thrive for the first 6 months - because of the ties. After release, she quickly began gaining weight & was able to transition from a newborn flow nipple.

My second son (heā€™s 3 months old now) has a tongue tie. I donā€™t breastfeed but he did have trouble latching on the bottle at first so we saw an ENT at 7 weeks old. His is ā€œmoderateā€ (not severe) according to the ENT and they recommended not clipping it right now since heā€™s not breastfed and just waiting to see if it causes his speech issues in the future so I didnā€™t have my sons clipped. He latches much better now and only has minor issues with a pacifier. I would just suggest talking to your pediatrician or an ENT to get their advice especially since you breastfeed, ours would have clipped my sons had he been a breastfed baby.

My daughter was but when she turned 5 and they took her tonsils out they fixed her tongue tie. It was also the cause of my baby not latching on to feed and she had really bad acid reflex.

They said my son was no problem breast feeding and is making lots of different sounds at 10 m

Hey! So I was born tounge tied and my mother didnā€™t not do anything about it until I was like 5 and it caused a huge speech problem for me. I couldnā€™t not talk prop properly until I was 13 after taking years of speech therapy. I just had my baby boy a month ago and he had a rly bad tounge tie and I couldnā€™t breastfeed because it caused alot of issues, we went and had it cut a week after having him and he is doing so much better and it was only a 5 min process to get done

Ladies, whatā€™s tongue tie?

My nephew had it the dr said he would grow out of it, he never did and couldnā€™t talk till they snipped it at 3 years old

Mine was completely tied, they cut it at 1 day old because he could not latch at all. He never truely learned after that.

My son is 11 soon and still has a tongue tie. It hasnā€™t caused any speech problems. The only thing he needs to do more of, is brushing his teeth, as he canā€™t get food out with his tongue like us. Also, canā€™t bob his tongue out much but its never affected him.

My little boy did, heā€™s now 4 and itā€™s never caused him any problems! He eats non stop and talks my ear off ( which they said might be a problem ) however, he couldnā€™t latch on to breastfeed but at the time I was in ICU and extremely ill so I didnā€™t really try much either! If you can and itā€™s not affecting him I would leave it untreated xxx

I havenā€™t had a baby with a tongue tie but I have done my research because my baby struggled to latch. I personally would get is fixed because I have read up that it can affect speech later on, latch and teeth alignment. Itā€™s best to get it done when they are small. Itā€™s a little Lazer, some babies donā€™t even complain, quick calm down afterwards.

My son was born with a tongue tie. The lingual frenulum looped to the tip of his tongue and about up over to the top. I was advised to get it snipped but he was so little and new and my first, so I was scared. I said no because he was able to nurse still but he really was not nursing as well as he could be. I had to use a shield. After two weeks I went in to see the lactation consultant and his doctor was there and agreed to do the frenulectomy right then if I agreed. I did it, I cried, my baby literally didnā€™t even cry. The frenulum when theyā€™re so small is paper thin, itā€™s best when theyā€™re tiny as it grows thicker as they grow and then goes from an outpatient procedure to a real surgery.
He latched and fed so much better after. He has a tiny divet on his tongue in the middle since his was quite a bad tongue tie, and his tongue is still pretty short, but he can actually get it out past his teeth now and to his lips. He would have never been able to stick his tongue out, enjoy an ice cream the way others kids can, pronounce certain words or letters/vowel sounds easily, without the clip. He could have potentially had a lisp or needed speech therapy down the line.
It was worth it to me as the doctor said his was bad enough to most likely not be capable of loosening by itself.
No pain and a happy kid who now tries to lick everything.

My son did and breastfeeding was the worst and hurt until we had it corrected. He was completely fine after and it healed great. No issues, and hes 3.5 years old now.

My son had both a tongue and lip tie. It went undetected and I almost quit breastfeeding because of it. I definitely recommend getting it corrected as soon as you can. It made my son not be able to latch on correctly and caused so much frustration!

My oldest has severe tongue tie, canā€™t get his tongue out past his teeth. My youngest had lip tie and tongue tie. Both were left alone. Both breastfed successfully well past a year old. Neither one has any speech delay whatsoever. Even being legally deaf my oldest still has perfect speech. They both hit 20lbs before 6 months old, so they fed well. Oldest is now 11 still tongue tied. Youngest is 4, he managed to break both of his sometime in the toddler years. It was soooooo traumatic I did not even notice when it happened lol, just that they had released by the time he was 2.

My daughter had to have hers snipped at 7 years old due to speech impediment. She graduated from speech soon after having it done. Recommend before they get that old.

If baby has issues with latching itā€™s a super quick procedure that can help. Talk to your Dr. .

I didnt even know my youngest had both a liptie and tongue tie until we moved and got a new dentist and it was pointed out. This was just last year. She is 7. So 6 years and no doctor or dentist pointed it out so it went unnoticed since i never knew that existed. It never effected her latching on to cause concern. And did not effect her speach. The dentist had her say words to see if he needed to remove it and since she said them perfect he left the tongue tie alone but lasered her top liptie to help with her little gap in her teeth.

My son had a tounge tie. They caught it in the hospital bc I was having such a hard time breast feeding. It took ten minutes to fix but looked pretty sore for a couple of weeks. They said it can bust on their own when they get older tho but could cause issues with speech.

My daughter had 100% tongue tie, itā€™s literally a little snip think I cried more than what she did :see_no_evil:

I did, my baby had a very hard time latching and when she did it was super painful. She had it cut when she was a couple of weeks old, it was super sad to hear her cry but it made all the difference !

My brother had problems with speech had it clipped as a teenager

Mine had a tongue tie and still has. We had a problem, initially, with breastfeeding but we were taught by a breastfeeding specialist as to how to have the baby latch properly. Sheā€™s 2 now and a complete chatterbox. If its minor, it will just loosen eventually. Though you can opt for a laser surgery.

My youngest had both a lip and a tongue tie. I got them both fixed as it can cause a lot of issues if not corrected. It was a really quick procedure and he only whimpered a bit and he was easy to calm after.

My first born was tongue tied. We did have trouble breastfeeding with it. Heā€™s 4 now and just had the procedure to fix it a little over a month ago. We waited to see if it would loosen on its own. He is able to eat and talk so much better and loves it! He gets so excited when he can say words with an ā€˜Lā€™ in them now.

Both my children had tongue tie and we had a nightmare time trying to breastfeed, I had to use a nipple shield with my first and at 2 weeks old we had it snipped, never had another problem since, with my second they noticed straight away and snipped it at 6 hours old xx

I had a severe tongue tie. Never had it snipped, never needed speech path. No speech impediments. No difficulties latching, gaining appropriate weightā€¦ Just issues sticking my tongue out at others- it couldnā€™t go much past my teeth. When I was 17 I got it pierced, and it eventually ripped out, so now, I can stick my tongue out at others marginally more. Anyway, if your child has no issues latching, Iā€™d put having it snipped off until later, if speech ever becomes an issue- it very likely may not.

Definitely get it fixed! It can cause many issues down the road as they get older. You need a to see a Pediatric Dentist NOT an ENT or Pediatrician! It should also be corrected via lazer NOT clipped. Make sure you do your research and find someone who has lots of experience doing it.

My son has his tongue clipped at a couple of weeks, he had a hard time latching with it but did fine after and healed up super quickly. If you do not get it done when they are little itā€™s a lot harder waiting, they told me I would have to learn how to talk again if I had mine done as an adult.

My 1st and 5th born, both girls were tongue tiedā€¦back in 2000 they took her in for surgery, had to get stitchesā€¦fast forward to 2010 (my other daughter) and they snipped it right in the office, just a little bleedingā€¦dont know why the big difference as they were both similar with the way their tongues wereā€¦both turned out great and no issues

My grandson was tongue tied and my daughter was breastfeeding and it made it a little difficult for him to latch on. She had it clipped in the doctorā€™s office and now hes fine.

My daughter who is now 7 has has a minor tongue tied. She drooled a bit during feedings but that was about all. We never got it fixed because it hasnā€™t caused any problems for her.

My son had it, and his pediatrician clipped it at 3 months because it didnā€™t loosen. His tongue mobility was affected when taking a bottle.

My youngest was tongue tied. It wasnā€™t really bad but we got fixed just so she wouldnt have speech problems when shes older. That was hers peds only concern.

I would say its best doctor cuts under babies tongue. No problems with breastfeeding after that

Our 5 yr old granddaughter had her tied and we let her grow out of it done real good on her own it all depends on how bad it is hers was mild n loosened on its own

Mine! They found it when he was 1 day oldā€¦ The doctor reccomended leaving it alone unless he had problems latchingā€¦ He latched fine and has had NO problemsā€¦ It is a simple procedureā€¦ But they do it unmedicated with no numbing because they want the baby to cry so they can see under the tongueā€¦ Because mine had no problems I decided to leave it!! But, you should do whatever you are most comfortable with for sure!! Good luck, Mama!!

My son was slightly tongue tied and his dr suggested breastfeeding, a pacifier and bottle said the different nipples would help stretch it and it did. My nephew on the other hand was severely tongue tied and had to have his snipped.

Mine did at birth. They clipped it the next day.

My second daughter was tongue tied, at the hospital the doctor cut under her tongue. My daughter was having problems hatching on my breast when i was breastfeeding her. No problems after that. She hatched on great.

The doctors didnā€™t notice my sonā€™s until he was two weeks old. Two days later my son was crying and ended up ā€œuntyingā€ it

It was clipped byba dr

Both my boys were tongue-tied. My oldest was about 18 months when we were told about it (the doctor knew earlier but didnā€™t tell us). He had problems eating and speaking. We pushed to have it taken care of and he was able to speak and was understood clearly! My youngest son couldnā€™t latch on and the nurse found that he was tongue-tied at 1 day old. They took care of it before we left the hospital.

My daughter had one, they told me in the hospital. Our pediatrician got us an appointment with a specialist, the next week. Went into the office and he snipped it, a little bleeding and was better by that night.

My granddaughter had a slight tongue tie and lip tie. She was having issues nursing. My daughter took her to a pediatric ENT and they clipped it in the office. Now she nurses like a champ.

My daughter was tongue tied all the way to the tip. The doctors said it was pretty severe; it would cause speech problems if it was left alone. It also caused my daughter to not be able to latch correctly. We had it snipped before she was 24 hours old. It was quick and healed quickly and sheā€™s perfectly fine and happy. Sheā€™s 19 months now.

My daughter was tongue tied, we had her clipped at 3-4 days old. It fixed her latching issue and she cried for maybe 30 seconds. My niece was tied and they opted to wait. Finally had it done in kindergarten. Had to be general anesthesia and she has serious speech issues.

Mine was double tongue tied ! And didnā€™t know it till she was much older. Spoke perfectly. The dr just noticed it on one of her visits

My baby was tongue tied and we did laser! YOU WILL NOT REGRET! She had immediate relief and nursing was SO MUCH BETTER!

Get done sooner rather than later. My youngest was tongue tied and we had her clipped at 1 month and she was over it in a matter of seconds. I however got mine clipped when I was 7 and still get the taste in my mouth from the procedure randomly over 20 years later. Not fun!

Tongue tie runs in my bloodline. My grandfather, my father, myself and both of my children were. I had trouble with latching and my mom was unaware until i was 2 and was unable to talk. Had to have it clipped by a plastic surgeon and was able to talk clearly the next day. When my first was born he couldnt latch and we did not realize the reason for months. He was struggling with words and eating so we had his taken care of at 10 months. When my daughter was born i asked in the hospital and they were able yo do hers at 1 day old with no problems and she was then able to latch. Depending on the severity, i say deal with it earlier so there are less struggles later on.

My granddaughter was ,we had it taken care of and she was able to latch so much better :hugs:

Both of my boys. Never had their tongues clipped because they can grow back. Runs in my family and my cousins always grew back. His mom would have his clippedhe resented it because it hurt.

My daughter was to the tip of her tongue. She had no problem nursing and no speech problems. Her dentist said it was a problem because she couldnā€™t use her tongue to clean her teeth and it could also pull her gum away from her teeth. We had it done when she was nine.

My son had a tongue tie. He was my first child. Several doctors all said it didnā€™t need to be treated. He was never able to latch. The lactation consultant said it was my fault (she literally told me my breasts were too big and he was so small that I was literally the problem). He didnā€™t outgrow it until he was 3 or 4 years old. I wish I had pushed to have it treated but I believed what I was told. I exclusively pumped breast milk for him until he was 7 months old and then I switched to formula because I found out I was pregnant again. I highly recommend you get it treated. Funny, my daughter (no tongue tie) had no problem at all and was able to latch immediately. And she was smaller than him.

My son was said to have a minor tongue tie but it didnā€™t seem to effect him like they said it would. They wanted me to get it snipped but I declined. Heā€™s 5 months and doing great now.

My grandnephew Isaac was born with the condition, had surgery very young, and turned out great

My youngest has minor tongue tie bring it up with the doctors sometimes itā€™s so minor that they donā€™t want to do surgery to fix it because it wonā€™t really get in the way like they did with my son

I was born with it and so was my son and both of his daughters. My son and grand daughters needed speech to pronounce words with l,v,b and sh and ch. My sonā€™s was never clipped. My grand daughters and myself had them clipped. Mine was done at 5 hours old. No speech problem for me.

My son was tongue tied and my grandson was tongue tied. With my son we caught it early, so we had surgery done to correct when doctor felt he was old enough. Grandson had surgery as well to correct, but he was maybe 2-3 yrs old. Pretty easy surgery.

If you are thinking about the procedure, itā€™s an easier recovery if they have it done at a younger age. It is a VERY simple procedure and can be done at practically any dental office.

My oldest had it and the pediatrician just clipped it right there in his office (16 years ago). It was so easy and no problems after that.

My boyfriend has a tongue tie that was never cut and he speaks just fine. Our youngest we have together shes 3 months now has a tongue tie i saw it the day she was born. My doctor said if she has issues eating we will clip it. But I havenā€™t had a single issue breastfeeding her and she doesnā€™t like the bottle but when she does have one she does just fine. My doctor said if she has a problem with talking when she starts to we may clip it. But like I said her dad has it and he has no issues talking

Iā€™m an older woman. I was tongue tie and I donā€™t think my parents knew it until I started school. I was 6 when mine got clipped. I was was breast fed too.

I had twin boys tongue tied. They couldnā€™t suck on a bottle hardly at all. Then they would upchuck what little they had drank. It was two weeks before we were told by mom they were tongue tied. It ran in our family. I called her crying for help, cause I had no sleep since they were born. What a change after they were fixed

I was born tongue tied, 67 years ago. My mom said that they had to clip that thing under the tongue. I wasnā€™t able to eat.
