My son is 1 , he will be 2 September 29th. He weighs 38 lbs and 8 ounces. The doctor said he should go on a diet so what are some good foods he should have and that yall would think he would like ? He eats ravioli , mashed potatoes, hot dogs , i cook homemade meals every night. He doesn’t eat a lot of sweets either. He also drinks chocolate milk bottles every night and I just switched to 1%.

I wouldn’t do the chocolate milk bottles at night anymore unless you’re brushing his teeth after. But no way would I put a 1 year old on a diet either. Just offer more fruits and veggies and good proteins. And water

No more chocolate milk, more fruits and veggies. Watch the pasta.

Firstly, cut the chocolate milk. No need for that. Add more fruits and vegetables in his diet and definitely cut down on processed foods.

Dont diet that baby. In a few months hes gotta have a growth spurt and be 4in taller and still 38lbs. This is the cycle with toddlers. They gain 10lbs in a short period of time, and then theyll have a height spurt and be beanpoles for awhile. And the cycle repeats. I would skip choco milk forsure but the foods you listed arent terrible.

Stop the chocolate milk bottles

Is he fussy? You mentioned ravioli, mashed potatoes and hot dogs - wasn’t sure if that’s all he eats or if those are just examples.

The more fat in milk has less sugar so switching to 1% doesn’t do much

My daughter is the same weight and same age and is 39 1/2 inches tall will be in 2 in August ! Don’t ever let anyone tell you to put him on a diet . My daughters dad is tall and her dr says just maintain her weight she eats a lot of fruit and veggies and some milk during the day . :pray:t3:

Check out Ellyn Satter’s resources.

It would also be good to consult with a registered dietician.

More water, less pasta, less chocolate milk at night try regular milk. Wean him off the bottle since it can cause bottle rot if he’s going to sleep with it also.
Less carbs more veggies. But babies tend to gain what they can. I would just let him eat as much as he wants but make sure he gets a good intake of veggies

Cut them hit dogs they are full of fat offer him a variety of raw veggies and plenty of water too no milk before bed he only needs milk like once a day

just cut his sugar/carbs.

Maybe he just needs to move more? My sons constantly eating but hes constantly moving.

I would just do regular milk
All that extra sugar from the chocolate u got to think is just sitting on his poor teeth when he sleeps

Cut out the chocolate milk at night first of all. Stay away from fast food, processed food and sweets in excess. I would not start a strict Diät at such a young age but instead, encourage more activity.

Maybe you should switch his dr no toddler should be on a diet. But increase water and veggies. Also take him to the park as often as you can.

I don’t give milk on weekends, I also keep grapes and bananas  :grapes: handy because they’re quick and easy to go to and really inexpensive and instead of cookies we go for gram crackers and daily water intake.

My son eats almost entirely fruits, veggies and milk. I struggle to get him to eat meat and things other than grapes and green beans lol. But we is about 31 lbs and 33 in tall at 2. Cut the chocolate milk out, but even 1% is full of sugar. Start offering him healthier choices like veggies and fruit instead of pasta and potatoes, but some kids are just built a little bigger. You will give him a complex and trigger self esteem issues for the rest of his life if you put him on a “diet” this young! But start as a family making smarter choices and he will see it as normal and not punishment.

First off, remove the chocolate milk every night. Then remove raviolis, potatoes and hotdogs. All of those are fattening and not nutritional. Add in more white meat such as turkey, chicken, tuna etc and incorporating green vegetables . Should only be drinking white milk and water. No juices or sweet drinks.

Cut out the chocolate milk, minimize starches and carbs. Add in more fruits n veggies… cook healthy meals, chicken breast, seafood, red meat with veggie sides… hot dogs and other processed foods are no good

Cut the carbs and give him raw fruits or veggies to snack on. High protein breakfast and dinner.

Diet for a 18 month old? As he gets more active, he will naturally slim down.

Keep him on full fat milk, just cut out the chocolate part, it’s not the good fats you want rid of, it’s the sugar, kids should never diet, it’s a horrid word that leads to all sorts of complexes and anxieties

My child has been 38 pounds for almost 2 years. He will be 3 in September also. And I still give my child chocolate milk at night. I see no problem with it… neither does my pediatrician. Every pediatrician is different and the “advice” they suggest is their opinion. And their opinion only. Every year doctors opinions and advice change. If u feel your child is happy healthy and is actually eating then I’d be happy. Hes 2 let them be 2.

Add more meats veg and fruit less simple carbs. Your doctor told you to put him on a diet so please don’t listen to the women telling you not to put him on a diet. If you don’t act now and change his diet you could be opening his world up to chronic diseases… Heart diseases type 2 diabetes. childhood obesity is no joke. Act now while he is still young.

I’m not truly concerned about weight. When they hit toddler/preschool age it usually melts off as they’re more mobile/active. But the chocolate milk is bad. Chocolate binds to calcium, so they don’t get the vitamins/intake they need.

skip the chocolate milk, offer veggies and fruit. lay low on the breadz, pastas, rice dishes…
see if he likes cauliflower rice, sweet potato rice, zucchini noodles, and stuff like that

Get him off the chocolate milk and you are feeding him a lot of stuff that has a lot of carbs in it…limit carbs by using wheat or whole grain…breads and noodles…water and white milk

He shouldn’t have the milk at night tbh

Hot dogs, mashed potatoes, raviolis, chocolate milk…none of these are nutritional. I don’t see a dr suggesting putting baby on a diet but rather telling you to choose healthier foods to feed him. My daughter is 2 years 8 months and weighs 27lbs. And my 4 almost 5 year old daughter doesn’t even weigh 38lbs, shes 33lbs. They both get to choose whether they want SUGAR FREE chocolate milk for breakfast or for dinner and then they get skim milk for the other meal she didn’t choose the sugar free chocolate milk for. Start adding natural sweetened foods to his diet, such as fruits. Add more veggies. Cook more wholesome less processed meals. Water, water, water!!!

My doctor isn’t concerned about weight unless they are losing it till they get school age. Because when they are little like that they are still trying to even out and grow. I mean all doctors are different. No child should be on a diet at that age.

Ummm
STOP with the Chocolate Milk and start feeding him healthy nutritional foods. With what you had mentioned of what he eats, you are making him overweight

Water! No juice, no chocolate milk, junk or sweets. Fruits and vegetables. Gluten free. My 5 year old weighs 46 lbs!

No 2 year old should be drinking that much chocolate… I’d start there.

Choco milk should atleast be for a treat… certainly not everyday, fs :smirk::smirk:

I doubt the doctor used the term diet meaning to restrict his food but more In terms of eating a healthier diet.

Everything you mentioned above is unhealthy. The foods are all processed and FULL of carbs. Carbs = sugar. Sugar equals + weight, inability to focus and can affect teeth. The chocolate milk could be slightly better than SOME options. But again FULL OF SUGAR. look at buying Fairlife chocolate milk and put it in a cup, never a bottle and do not give before bed. One or two glasses a day and then just have water or regular milk. A child that is almost two shouldn’t be getting a bottle anymore anyway.

As some others have stated, give less processed foods. Keep things like strawberries and blueberries for when he wants a snack.

PLEASE read the ingredients in hotdogs and I promise you will never want to eat them again.

Cut back on some of these and you won’t have anything to worry about.

Limit his milk , my son will 2 in September too . He drinks 2 cups in the morning and 1 before bed . The rest the day he drinks whater with drink mixes . But he pretty much eats whatever . Fruits , meat , oatmeal , jello ect . Mine weighs 30lbs . Dont put a baby on diet tho .
But his doctor isn’t concerned with his weight at all

Smh , chocolate milk? Nooo at bed time at that ! :woman_facepalming:t4:

Its so hard to keep a kid on a diet. Im trying to get my 7yo to not lose weigh but not gain more, last night after dinner he wanted ice cream (I dont buy it his grandmom boughted) so I offered him yogurt instead, he asked for another one and end up also having ice cream, gave up, maybe if I let him have ice cream at first place he wouldnt eat all that. Usually I try to make him eat fruits instead of junk and sometimes it works and sometimes not so much

I gave my kids Ovaltine instead of chocolate milk. It’s healthier and really yummy. As long as he’s eating and healthy, I say keep doing what you’re doing. Our ped said as long as they’re eating something, don’t worry because toddlers are going to be active, picky and they’ll grow out of the bad habits. Introduce small changes at a time.

My son is 1 will be 2 August 20th and is 36 lbs. his doctor has never told me to put my child on a diet. And I don’t give mine any type of chocolate.

I’d just switch to healthier snacks and meals. Certainly no chocolate milk and definitely not at night before bed because it will rotten his teeth.

Definately transfer to water at night no chocolate milk and give him more fruits and veggies less starch and processed things

Ravioli, mashed potatoes, and chocolate milk…think we found the problem

No chocolate milk because it contains extra sugar, no pasta, no potatoes, no hotdogs unless kosher. Try whole chicken nuggets (as opposed to minced), or just plain, tender meat of any kind, vegetables and fruit. No fruit rollup or gummies. No fruit juice, only whole fruits. Any bread should be high fiber bread (read the label…4 or 5 grams per slice). No sweetened yogurt, only plain yogurt with real fruit mixed in. Limit milk, but use whole milk as it will satisfy hunger longer and has less sugar than low-fat per ounce. Basically, everyone needs to control their sugar intake and carb intake (as simple carbs turn right into sugar once eaten) in order to control weight and prevent fatty liver. Children as young as 5 are being diagnosed with fatty liver (which can cause diabetes) due to processed foods and sugary foods and sweets.

You shouldn’t be giving him chocolate milk especially at night! That is so bad for his teeth as well has his weight. Also he is still way to young for hot dogs those are a high choking food. You need to incorporate more protein and veggies! Like chicken, poke chops, eggs, fish. And any veggies would help keep in full. All the things you described are very unhealthy starchy foods and are okay to eat just in moderation like as a weekly or maybe twice a week type thing.

I feed my son the same stuff. But it’s always paired with veggies and fruits. He also drinks nothing but regular milk and water. Chocolate milk isn’t necessary for a kid under 1. Try taking that out or switching to sugar free. Good luck!

Chocolate milk has a lot of sugar. I would change him to regular milk

I see alot of bread, pasta, white sugar, processed meat, and choclate on this OPs post. I saw no veggies, a starch that’s typically made with a lot of butter and milk. My 4 year old is 39 lbs so that sounds like he needs to get a more healthy diet to me.

Any doctor who recommends a diet for a freaking toddler needs to be fired. Eat healthy and get regular exercise which for a toddler basically means playing and he’ll be fine.

Well to start no chocolate milk he should get whole milk not 1% to get the benefits but only needs between 8-16 oz total a day it’s not meant to replace formula, food is, he can still eat plenty of food, just needs lots of veggies, fruits, whole grains, lean meats like chicken. I would make an appointment with a dietician!

None of the food you listed is healthy. He should be eating cut up green vegetables, baked chicken, pork, eggs, tuna or ground beef, cheese, yogurt, milk fruit and water. He should not be eating processed sugary foods or juices. Put his toys all around the edges of a room so he has to move around to get them. Take him outside and set up storage bins with water and cups or sand and shovels or whole corn or rice to dig in.

I’ve never heard of putting a baby on a diet. At almost 2 he will be running around & will loose some weight. I’d probably not give him the chocolate milk at bed time. Just alittle every once in a while- get him to feel up on vegetables - fruits. I would make some changes but not a diet…

Try more vegetables and less carbs. It’s crazy your doctor wouldn’t suggest what to feed him. If anything talk to a nutritionist.

Chocolate milk has sugar in it, duh, so giving it to him AT NIGHT is a big NO NO. And all the things he eats has a lot of carbs in it. If his doctor wants him on a diet then go to less carbs and more protein.

Sneak the chocolate milk down by cutting it with water after a couple of weeks he will notice it doesn’t taste as good. Try mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. Are a few veggies in. Just a little at a time, don’t try to change everything at once it doesn’t work.

All that sugar at that age is setting any child up for type 2 diabetes…
Oatmeal, eggs, fruit for breakfast…
Veggies, meat, soups, for rest of the day…fruit for snacks

No way. My daughter will be 2 on 9/7, she’s 39 lbs and about 40 inches and the doctor has never said such a thing. I mean I don’t give her chocolate milk before bed but she drinks 2% and loves fruits and various other foods. Just keep an eye on it and see how he does at his 2 year. Try giving him more veggies my kids love green beans, carrots, cucumbers etc. good luck!

Did the doctor actually say diet?
I think he meant you need to feed him a more balanced diet to avoid future problems.
You said he wont drink regular milk. He will drink what you give him if you explain no more chocolate milk.
You run the show.

The milk he needs to not have people telling you to switch to whole milk are drunk. 1 & 2% has the exact same amount of calcium with less fat & sugar which is why they give it to pregnant women but you adding fat & sugar to it with the chocolate isn’t helping. hes not an infant anymore it’ll actually stop their calcium and iron absorption. And stop the hot dogs & raviolis! Cook real food not fake processed junk. He needs grilled chicken, veggies, maybe turkey etc. Even sandwhichs are better than what you’re giving him. And potatoes are pure starch. Average weight for a 2 year old is 26 pounds for girls and 27 for boys. Your baby is 20 months old. And is waaayyy past that.

The fat content is not the only problem. You gotta take a look at the sugar content he’s consuming. Especially right before bed. He has no chance to use that sugar energy up, therefore it’s getting stored as fat (calorie energy surplus). If anyone is over consuming any energy yielding nutrients, such as: carbohydrates (includes sugar), protein, and fats. There will be weight gain.

Only thing I would do is go with Sugar free choc milk. And More Veggies, boil food instead of fry or bake in oven.
Had a grown Friend that drank Choc Milk every night for many yrs he weighed over 350 lbs he stopped eatting fried food and no more choc milk and he lost 145lbs . Good luck Sweetie wouldent worry to much about it.

None of that is really healthy, and it’s all fatty.
Try more fruits and veggies, git rid of the chocolate in the milk. More meats. Lots of water.

I reallly would be concerned with putting the word diet and toddler in the smae sentence however your child NEEDS fruits and veggies yea you can do a starch but do it in smaller portions. Baby should be getting a fruit with breakfast and maybe snack in afternoon and veggies with lunch and dinner

I know those feels. My son has sensory issues with foods and is a very picky eater. After I was told that he was underweight, I started giving him those children’s nutritional drinks. A year or so later, his new pediatrician tells me he was fine all along and was at that time slightly over weight. She said that the most important thing for a child is that they are eating and thriving. I cut out the nutritional shakes and switched to whole milks and flavored water. I gave him options within every food group until we found items in each that he could eat comfortably. He’s still about 10 pounds over (mostly due to a past adhd medication) but he is happy, healthy, and thriving.

Lady every thing you mentioned is converted to sugar in the gut. Your son needs no white products. Nothing made with flour. Greens, beans, yellow vegetables, red vegetables, chicken, fish. No fried foods. Limit use of potatoes and corn. Both high sugar content. No sugary drinks . Plenty of water. Fruit and veggies

I wouldn’t keep giving him chocolate milk. My son is close to that age and he’s a big kid too. Not fat or anything but tall and big for his age, but he drinks tons of water. We do eggs fruit and toast for breakfast, usually I put a little Parmesan cheese on his eggs so they’re more tasty to him :joy: and definitely more fruits and veggies. Have you tried giving more lean meats instead of hot dogs? My son LOVES baked chicken. You can totally season it so that it still tastes delicious and isn’t so high in fat. If he digs the chocolate milk so much maybe try making him like a smoothie with Greek yogurt and banana and peanut butter :yum::yum: I always throw some spinach in there so he’s getting the leafy greens and doesn’t even know it lol

Definitely good idea to stop with chocolate milk every night. All that sugar settling in his teeth and tummy is no bueno. Add more veggies and fruits to his diet. More physical activity for sure. An above comment said take him to the park, that’s a great idea! Parenting is hard and you learn everyday. It’s good you are taking steps toward change bc u actually give a shit.

Diet is not a bad word people. You can have a healthy diet, or an unhealthy diet. This Dr isnt suggesting putting him on god damn Jenny Craig! Feed him properly. Follow the health guide. You clearly have access to the internet. Research how to help your son, and stop taking medical advice from strangers who clearly know nothing. Listen to your Dr. He is right. Your son is very over weight, and is in danger of any health issues because of it. Pretending otherwise will just harm him. If you are still confused, ask his doctor for a print out of health foods best for him. There is no “my son won’t eat…” NO CHILD has ever starved to death on purpose. He will eat what you give him eventually.

Try chocolate almond milk!! Tastes just as good and 100 calories!

I would try switching to low fat milk and if he won’t drink it without chocolate you can put a little bit of sugar free chocolate syrup in it rather than all the sugar that’s in premade chocolate milk. But that doesn’t sound really over weight to me. As long as he’s getting a balanced diet with fruits and veggies protein and grains I wouldn’t worry too much. Try to push fruits and veggies for snacks and stuff like oatmeal, yogurt, eggs, cheese sticks, maybe deli meats like Turkey and ham instead of hot dogs? But he’s so young, as long as he is eating a balanced diet and staying active I wouldn’t sweat it

Switch to a whole food diet. We don’t do cow dairy but that’s a personal choice. Stay away from processed foods that say “sugar-free” or “fat-free”. They often have worse ingredients for a trade off. Whole foods are the way to go :revolving_hearts:

I guess that is quite big considering my 1 year old is 16 pound my 2 year old is 27 pound and my nearly 5 year old is 38 pound :woman_shrugging: every child is different tho, as long as he eats a balanced diet and just cut out the choc milk

Home cooked does not equal healthy.
I make a kick ass mac and cheese from scratch… But it’s artery clogging to say the least.

Low fat milk and whole milk have the same amount of sugar, along with the chocolate… I would change that first. Don’t change too much at one time but phase the worst out first. And then try to replace with healthier options. But definitely work on the bottle first

he’s getting far too much pasta and bread, noodles, and junk. Hotdogs are essentially junk. Try fruits and vegetables for the most part, with some proteins like baked or grilled skinless chicken, fish (not fish sticks) and beef (lean cuts).

I’ve always given chocolate milk as a treat…definitely not daily. Maybe gradually start putting less in each day if he will have a fit about it. You can also try to hide vegetables in with the things he does like and again gradually increase veggies and decrease the mashed potatoes/ravioli. You can add peas/green beans/diced carrots into those foods. Maybe change hot dogs to turkey dogs for a lil healthier version, my daughter will eat mashed cauliflower, taste just as good as mashed potatoes…and add veggies to that also. Idk if the grape juice that you do 50/50 of has sugar in it but you can always just do water with water enhancers (mio has many sugar free flavors), my daughter wouldn’t drink regular water and the pediatrician suggested that…worked like a charm. My daughter will have a snack…she can have a choice of fruit…watermelon in the summer is a great treat.
