Okay mamas, I need help organizing my grocery shopping. I’m always all over the place and end up running out by the end of the month and going over my budget.
Meal prep and snack prep saves me hundreds every month.
Depends on what kind of food you like. I have tons of ideas for recipes I use on a tight budget. I grew up poor so I know how to stretch food and everyone walks away from the table full!
Take the time to build the pantry basics. Learn how to price per ounce, meal plan, coupon, and shop the ad. Find things that work for lots of things. I buy bigger boxes of pasta instead of different boxes of shapes. Always have rice and potatoes. Frozen veggies are cheap and are almost as good as fresh. Convenience foods cost more so I prioritize and whatever I can do myself I do such as buy a big bag of chips and portion. Frozen juice is cheaper also than bottled. Make your own cold brew or iced coffee. Girl just hmu if you need help. I’m a pro at this. I’ve taught moms how to do it in exchange for a few grocery items when I was broke broke lol
I find that I spend way more money by actually shopping in the store. Walmart grocery has been a lifesaver for our budget. I plan meals ahead of time, write down the ingredients we’ll need, and just add them to my cart and pick up when I have time. I also buy in bulk when I can from Costco. 10 cans of chicken for $10 or 2 cans for $5 at Walmart? You pick. They also have great deals on meat, diapers, just about everything. It’s just a matter of if you need it in bulk. We go through a lot of Parmesan and seasonings so it makes sense to buy the 1lb containers. I have picky eaters and don’t have a lot of time to cook from scratch every night so we do eat a lot of boxed dinners and such if my husband cooks. Which does work out well by online shopping because then you can visualize your cart while also checking your cupboards, and seeing the total each time you add something. These ladies also have some good tips but that’s what has worked best for my family. We easily feed a family of 6 with roughly $100 a month. It’s definitely doable.
Look in advance for discounts of long term products (shampoos, tuna, cleaning products, pasta, rice, coffee, diapers,…). You may save 20-30% on each packet. Then there are coupons, cards for loyal clients.
Groceries: seasonal products bought in big packets cost less. Now my family is planning to buy a lot of tomatoes. Aim? We do tomatoe sauce and we store it for few months. The same we do with fruit jams. Homemade bread can be in the freezer up to 3 months. You can prepare soups and freeze them in advance.
I found that sometimes buying on line is easier. Non perishable foods. Easier to compare pricing.
Meal planning helps. And I do online grocery order so we’re not adding a bunch of random stuff to the cart. Once a month I also find all the random odds and ends we have and call it “dinner.” Lol. It’s pretty much whatever needs to be eaten but only has a few of something.
I use the app for the grocery store or delivery service app but actually shop myself. The app always gives me a total, tells me which isle things are on and keeps me in the mindset of having an actual list.
Ok good luck I’ve tried so hard
Not sure what you’re doing now, but I make a menu, make a list based on the menu and what we already have, then I do Walmart grocery online. I know what my total is before I check out and I can tweak my list accordingly. Like cut the ice cream if my total is higher than I want it to be, for example.
We spend about $200 a week for a family of 5. That includes paper products, hygiene, dog food, etc. I could save probably $50 a week by shopping at Aldi first and then doing grocery pickup for the items I was unable to get at Aldi, but I’ve been lazy lately and just do pickup.
If you plan a menu and eat meals you all enjoy, there will be much less temptation to waste money on eating out. Each time you fix supper, make enough for 2 nights. That means you cook 3 nights and the last night can be easy food or a leftover clean out night.
Put a piece of paper on fridge, whenever you’re low on something write it on the paper. Take it with you when you go to the store, focus on only getting what’s on the list. Shop sales, use coupons, buy ahead if it’s on sale really cheap. Try to only buy when on sale, even if you’re not low or out, because it’s cheaper than buying when you’re low or out and it’s not on sale. This works very well for me. I shop at Food Lion and use their app, which gives me dollars for free groceries.
I just buy staples for cooking st Costco bc i wont run out for forever.
Buy the kids items, my husbands lunch items
And then only buy the ingredients you need for meals that week so that you’re using it all
Many ladies have hit the nail on the head! Online groceries with pick up. This way I stay on my budget and don’t A. Pick up unnecessary items. B. I can add, remove and swap items without being embarrassed. C. I know the total and tax before paying.
What I do is I list what meals I will make and the days we will have leftovers then shop accordingly. Stick to the list.
