I am concerned something is wrong with my daughter: Advice?

Just a worried mama. Today at my 36 week appt, got an ultrasound done. Daughter weighs about 7lb 3oz. They say 69 percentile. But that’s not why I’m worried. I’m 35 and high risk. But the bigger issue is they said they see brain swelling. Baby girl in one ventricle is a 11 the other a 13. 9 is the normal standard. Looking for advice. Experiences…hope?

I pray all is well

I’d ask to see a fetal medicine specialist, they specialize in that kinda stuff. Prayers

Time to induce soon. I’d ask to.induce at 36 weeks and I’d ask for a pediatric neurologist to look aty case before she is born. Sounds like fetal hydrocephalus

I had to have my daughter at the university of michigan hospital due to this exact issue. When she was born they redid the ultrasound directly on her skull and found no abnormality. The obgyn at the hospital told me it could have been a tech error but that didnt make sense cuz i had seen fetal medicine at the toledo hospital and he told me the same thing the tech told me. Just make sure you deliver at a hospital that is equiped to deal with the worst case but keep praying for the best :sparkling_heart:

Pretty sure the doctor could advise you a lot better than anyone here

Not every ultrasound is correct tho so keep that in mind. My sons ultrasound saw swelling and said he was 13.8 lbs took him 2 weeks early and he was barley 8 lbs. when they scanned his brain there was nothing. So I feel like sometimes they shouldn’t say anything until it’s confirmed when baby is out

Okay this is my story. Its kinda long but worth it. I was 38 weeks pregnant and had ultrasound…I was also high risk…they told me she had swelling on her brain and thst she had dandy walker syndrome…i live in north carolina and our huge trauma center is Duke they made me schedule an emergency c section and there must hsve been 30 doctors in the room. They wisked her away immediately because she would need brain surgery immediately…anyway a couple hours after the surgeon comes in and said I want to tell you ,you have a beautiful 10lb 2oz baby girl that is absolutely normal. Not a thing wrong with her. They scared the life out of you for nothing

Prayers that all is well. Jesus is with you.

Why didn’t you ask your doctor while you were there?

Ultrasounds are user dependent. So get a second opinion.

Joseph Robinson that wasn’t her question, she’s obviously worried and asking for support/advice and other people’s experiences in this.

I don’t have the perfect answer but my daughter was born at 40 weeks and she was 7 lb 3 oz. They gain at an accelerated rate during the end of gestation.
I also experienced a situation where they picked up a medical problem during a sonogram which was overstated and exaggerated and a few weeks later another sonogram approved the problem was far more minimal than anticipated. I would ask to be seen by a specialist and due to you being in a Time sensor situation have them see if they can brush the appointment. The second look under the scrutiny of a highly trained eye can be the answer you need. 36 weeks, even at 7 lb is more premature than I would like to give birth given any choice. There’s still a lot of lung development that needs to take place. That is a very large baby though and I would definitely get a second opinion where they are measuring. Or is there a chance that you misconstrued your due date? Either way a follow up with a specialist where they look at the baby from scratch would be the best bet. If you do have to deliver soon they could give you a special steroid which will help speed up long development and babies born at 36 37 weeks are almost always perfectly fine

She may need a specialist but may need a shunt. But you won’t know anything until they are born :heart::pray: dont rush anything and there are tons of amazing doctors if there is anything that needs correcting :heart:

Ultrasounds are notoriously inaccurate this far along. Ask to see a Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor to have an in-depth ultrasound performed. They are trained to look for abnormalities.

What does ur Dr say? That’s where I would go with my concerns!

I think they tell us shit like this to prepare us for the worst. My little cousin was told her daughter had water on the brain and swelling, she would need a helmet w a drain. Claire was perfect and is a thriving 8 year old today.

Try not to get too worked up, sis. Hopefully these other ladies are right and it’s just a misread image or something. Hugs

My son has hydrocephalus and it was caused from a brain bleed/ swelling in the womb and we had no idea til he was a few months old. It would be best to catch it asap. My son has a shunt to reduce pressure and fluid.

Honey they’re never 100 percent correct, I was told so many different things with my daughter and she came out perfectly fine! Oh and they told me I wasn’t as far along as I thought even tho it was my first time having sex so I knew exactly when I got pregnant, so I ended up having a 9 pound baby :weary:

With my son they said he was gonna have water he’d his fluids were extremely high in brain at all ultra sounds. When I had him he was just fine said on ultra sound he was 9 lbs 8 Oz but he was 7 lbs 6 Oz. He was not a water head he was a normal baby but my fluids was always high so they got his head n my fluids. I prayed and asked God whatever it maybe give me the structure and strength to do whatever I had to. As I would love my babies no matter what

I have hydrocephelus (fluid on my brain). Is that what they say she has. I was born 3 months early and have a shunt (pump to drain the fluid) I’m 34 just showing that no one would think or know I have it unless I told them or they already knew it. You can see my shunt tubing on the left side but I really don’t get many people asking what it is, and my head isn’t out of proportion like some I’ve seen with hydrocephelus. I’ve only had 2 shunt surgeries first was when I was born then 3 months later due to it malfunctioning, every case is different but my mom said I was really lethargic and only wanted her, if she gave me to my dad I would scream and even at that young scratch him. I’d definitely see a neurologist. I’ve never gone to Michigan for any of my hydrocephelus treating but I’ve always heard very good things about that school when it comes to this. My neurosurgeon has either retired by now or just isn’t taking new patients, I used to live in the Elkhart/South Bend Indiana area, now live in lower Michigan about 3 hours from the college of Michigan. Things have come a long way since I was born. I have hope for you and your little girl.

Well, one thing i learned was ultra sounds are not always correct. I know its not easy, but stay positive, and if you can, get a second opinion. Pray as well.

Get a second opinion they told me my first daughter was small… she came out 8lbs 4oz lol as for the other part ask your Dr or for a second opinion.

I was high risk with my son, I had to be induced early and he was 9lbs and fully healthy. 2 weeks early

They told me this with my son. He’s 6 now and very healthy. Just be thorough with your checkups. Don’t stress too much mama. Take good care.

Could have Hydrocephalus. My daughter was born with it she has a brain shunt . Feel free to join my group Parents of children with hydrocephalus

Have you talked to your doctor about inducing labor maybe this situation should be evaluated out of the womb. I wish doctors listened to moms we always have an instinct

Just try and relax as much as possible…I know that’s difficult. But those high risk docs know there stuff… so I am sending many thoughts and prayers. You may not know much more until the baby is born…my daughter too is high risk…and delivered her first one at 29 weeks…you would never know it now…you have every reason to be concerned… what is your doc saying about it?

Try not to worry just ask the doctor more questions find out more

My prayers are with you and your baby.

It never hurts to get a second opinion. My doctor was way off on my last child and she was born way too early and couldn’t eat or breathe on her own and has issues for 2 years after. Now she’s a happy healthy almost 8 year old. And I really wish I had gone to another doctor to save her from all that.

I just had my third daughter and I had seven ultrasounds all together, at 4 different locations. They told me that I had a vellamentous cord insertion which can be extremely dangerous. By the 5th ultrasound they realize that it had been incorrectly read and that I was having a marginal cord insertion. She is now 4 months old and 15 lb, happy and healthy. As difficult as it is to relax just keep Hope that everything will be okay. Already 7 lb at 35 weeks sounds pretty amazing to me. Once she is out in the world she will thrive! :raised_hands::heart:

I was 36 with my baby daughter the doctor kept telling me that she had heart problems when born she was just fine she’s super active don’t worry about it your baby will be fine

Normal is less than 10

In my opinion you should not be over stress about it, if something were wrong the doctor would have planned to induce the labor , get a appt if possible and and ask all the questions you have

Don’t worry Mama — at over 7 pounds @ 36 weeks your little girl will be a fighter!! You still have 4 weeks +/- for things to work themselves out!! Don’t stress!!! I got pregnant at 41 and had a healthy 9 lb 9 oz baby boy against all odds!! My doctor tried to get me to terminate at 13 weeks due to a misleading ultrasound.

Tbh, I wouldn’t completely worry about it yet. Ultrasounds are not definitive. There is a good amount of room of error with them. Like they told me my kids were all going to be either a lot smaller or a lot bigger than they actually were. They also said that one my my kids was likely going to have heart issues due to a white spot on his heart during one, singular ultrasound and then he didn’t end up having anything wrong. Ultrasounds are only tools, they’re not exact. A few days before one of my daughters was born they said she weighed over 9lbs. She was born a few days later at 6lbs 5oz. Just as an example. I would recommend getting a second opinion.

Normally the ultrasound techs are allowed to tell you if they see anything abnormal for this very reason

I wouldn’t worry too much. If the doctor was overly worried he would be inducing you or giving you a c-section. My oldest daughter was 7lb 11oz, my son was 7lb 9ozs. I was put on bed rest for the whole time with my son as I was high risk. I had my son a month early c-section as I couldn’t carry him any longer and my body couldn’t take it.

Prayers love for you and your baby

I was told my son would need immediately kidney surgery at my 32 week ultrasound . Was induced that day and further testing showed he didn’t need surgery and treatment could have waited till he was full term…

I was told my daughter was going to be around 4 lbs, my whole pregnancy was told she was tiny and I was high risk, weekly appointments since
I was around 29 weeks… fluid checks, nonstress test, you name it… lol she came out 6lbs 4oz and perfectly healthy! I was also told with my son he had broad shoulders and it would be best to have a C-section so they didn’t run into complications I delivered vaginally and his shoulders were normal and he was 6 lbs 13 oz…

Follow your own gut instinct, doctors say lots of things that turn out to be wrong, sometimes they are right, machines are wrong too, even if something is wrong, you can’t do anything until bub comes, they are here for a reason, be positive, it does make a difference, deal with each thing as it happens, good luck

My sister was told her son had hydrocephalus based on ultrasounds. When he was born he just had a big head but was completely fine otherwise. I wouldn’t stress just yet.
