I went for my 25 week appointment yesterday and the dr I saw told me I most likely have a hernia above my belly button… I have had it since I had my son 4 years ago and was always told it was just nothing… whenever my baby pushes out to the front of my belly it hurts extremely bad and is extremely tender to the touch… I’m scared when I have this baby it’s going to get worse… Is there anything anyone knows that I can do about this?? I’ve seen the same providers in that office for years now and I’m pretty upset about this and very worried…
I’m so sorry they didn’t tell you this sooner but the good news is they can fix it after you have this baby. The rectus muscles stretch across the mid to upper abdomen and they can get so stretched during pregnancy that they can tear and separate during the last few months. This happens to a lot of women. It happened to me during my last 2 pregnancies but I’ve never had it fixed; although I would have like to have had it done. It doesn’t particularly hurt me but it does cause are larger tummy on top at the waist. I just never had the funds to do it because I have an umbilical hernia along with it. Both of the surgeries together would have made recuperation much longer. I’ve had enough abdominal surgeries to last a lifetime. I definitely felt it worse during my second to last pregnancy and my last pregnancy I was used to the sensation, since I’d been through it before. I’m in my 60’s now but have been a medical assistant; so I just take it as normal for me now. Some Drs like to wait until you’re absolutely done having children, but that would be to save you from going through that type of surgery twice. They basically open the stomach just far enough to locate the edges of the rectus muscle and trim the edges to be able to stitch them together. The hernia very rarely causes a lot of symptoms. Like I said; I noticed it as the baby got bigger towards the end of pregnancy. Possibly wearing the "maternity tape may help during that time. The tape can be used for low tummy muscle support and anywhere that you feel could help support the area. Looking into a baby bump sling might also help with lower and higher muscle support. Of course you should report any harsh pain to your doctor. It usually ends up just being a nuisance pain while pregnant but always make sure you check with your own Dr. Hope this helps! Congrats on having a new little one soon!

I had a hernia right in my belly button before and during pregnancy with my daughter 3 years ago! It hurt a lot and it made my pregnancy very hard but 6 weeks after I had my daughter I was able to have the surgery to have it fixed! Depending on the size they will either cut it out or put mesh in there! I had mesh put in mine! Recovery is rough, it took me a couple weeks to not be in severe pain and it bruised really bad but I’m no longer suffering with a hernia!
