Is it gross to let a dog lick out of a bowl before its washed?

My dad freaks out, he would rather use a paper plate sometimes, and his pickiness spread to my sis and I. He wouldn’t even like us to take sips from his cups (I get it, floaters).
I have let the dogs lick plates since I’m older but it took me laying off big time, but I clean with a little bleach with my water.

I grew up with my dad giving are dog the milk that was left in his bowl after cereal. Ihave donr the same thing many times. The bowl gets washed. I get some people may not like it but I dont think its something to make a big deal over.

You are way over reacting !! It’s a personal thing, we let our dog lick the plate and then it goes in the dishwasher. If you don’t do that in your own home that’s ok too. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

What’s the big deal. Your not going to eat off of it right after the dog locks it…it’s going in the dish washer.

Naw, that shit is nasty. People let their dogs do too much.

your overreacting dogs get scraos from plates all the time

I had a friend who would say let the dogs lick the plates in front of company and put them back in the cabinet. You’ll never have to feed those people again.

We don’t let our dog do that but he doesn’t get people food. I will say cleaning his bowls requires scrubbing with say bar keepers friend. The slobber slime is tough stuff. A housecleaner told me that it’s challenging to get dog slobber off windows. There is some type of bio film left behind.

My dog does all the time

As for culture, American? People around the world have been feeding their pet dogs scraps since domestication…how they do it and what they do it on is another story.

NO animals are eating out of my dishes or pots. JUST LAZY & NASTY.

I don’t get what the big deal is. It’s going to be washed. And what does the color of your skin have to do with it?

If it’s going to be washed with hot soap and water, especially in a dishwasher, no problem. All the doggie germs will be gone! However, if you think it’s gross, then it’s gross! Each to his (her) own! <3

I let my boy and my cat lick out the bowls or plates then it’s washed in antibacterial soap so no harm lol mabey it’s a white only kinda thing we are weird when it comes to pets lmao

#thatsnasty you didn’t overreact. It would have been the same reaction at our family barbeque.

You’re definitely overreacting

Our chances of getting any germ is greater from us eating without washing our hands. The saliva in humans and in dogs is programmed to kill most bacterias and worms. The stomach is highly acedic and the bacteria die in an acedic environment. But the things our hands touch just by turning a door knob are of all sorts and dogs don’t turn door knobs. Microbiology books explain that the friction of rubbing and scrubbing; and the soaps and cleansing are all disinfectant. It is a process of many events that cleanses the environment

You are over-reacting honey. Everything is washable. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Sorry, I believe she was correct.

I don’t like animals eating out of my dishes I’m eating from, I don’t think it has to do with race though just everybody’s personal preference.

You are overreacting it will be washed and sanitized if you have a dishwasher and I understand how you feel it’s something you are going to have to discuss and come to an understanding

My mom always said the same shit lol. But it’s not a logical reaction. A dog’s mouth is no grosser than a humans mouth. If the dishes are all going in the dishwasher or all going to be washed well by hand, then there shouldn’t be any reason for freaking out. It’s just one of those weird society things that gets passed down that people don’t stop to think about, I think.

I mean you let other people eat off your plates or go to restaurants and there’s no telling where their mouths have been either but your plates will be washed and then you can use them again. So same goes for a dog.

No, as long as dishes are washed

Way, way overreacting. Use some dish soap, you’ll live.

Yes imo…as it’ll be washed but I don’t do that except when eating ice cream. I’ll leave a little in the bowl for my gamora girl.

She’s right … Quite frankly if you licked the bowl before washing it it would have more germs on it than if the dog licked it … Their saliva has germ killing enzymes that our saliva doesn’t have … The fork you eat off of has more germs on it than the bowl did after the dog licked it … You’re completely over reacting :woman_facepalming:t3:

No not if it still needs to be washed, it’s fine. It will get cleaned and disinfected during the washing.

Absolutely not! My X husband tried to feed his dogs out of my pans and bowls, needless to say they all went in the trash!

I think it’s more a matter of what is gross to one may not be gross to another. I myself would not let the dog lick my dish. When I had a dog I washed their dish after they had eaten and put it back clean for their next meal.

Your over reacting. But if the dog or other animal took a shit in it. I’d be pissed and throw that shit away.

That’s a culture thing. I come from a farm family where dogs aren’t pets. They work. Our dogs work. They are either of service to our combat veterans in our family or they perform some family task.

That’s why they can do this. Most white family dogs in our history were members of the house because they contribute and do chores.

No lazy purse dog ever licking my bowl. Useless little rat.

Not even a real dog

I’m black n famm that’s disgusting :face_vomiting: need a black girl baby

Everyone wants to be with the white girl until we do white people s***. Lol.

Urggghhh yuck no I’d rather throw it away if I caught a dog or cat doing that I couldn’t use it again weather is been washed or not steamed through a dishwasher nope I wouldn’t use it

You should do what makes you comfortable. Occasionally I let my dog lick a dish, mostly I don’t. Dish goes in the dishwasher where it is sanitized so not a health issue.

Well…I have a patio door that our dog used to lick. I have used glass cleaner, alcohol, and a razor blade… And there’s still a film on it. We have two dogs, but we have two bowls also. the dogs get they’re doo-dads from them. My mom used to let our dog eat from the dish’s and I survived, but I don’t do it.

Overreacting big time. I let my dog do it on occasion and then I wash the dish.

I guess that’s one of those “different strokes for different folks” kind of things.

Personally, I think it’s disgusting and it wouldn’t fly in MY house w/ MY dishes. Buttt I’m not the kind of person who lets dogs/pets lick my face (or anywhere) either.

My advice would be to sit down and simply communicate with your SO & let them know that while you understand people come from different backgrounds and such, but that’s not something you’re okay with; and that you’d appreciate if moving forward that that didn’t happen anymore with household dishes.

Not sure what color or background has to do with it as I’m white and I think it’s disgusting. Dogs and cats have food dishes for a reason. If it was my bowl, it would become the dogs bowl now or I’d throw it. Gross.

I’m with you Jamm, not eating after or behind a dog! yuck-yuck…Scrape the potat. salad in the dog bowl.

No I think it’s gross too . I love animals I don’t have a pet at the moment but as much as I truly loved my dog he was not allowed up on the couch or to sleep in my bed or on my bed , I tolerate my cat ( when I’ve had one ) on my bed as long as he or she sleeps at the end of the bed but I’m a weird pet owner but they Never got without lots of love

Dawn on Jeopardy one time,it stated that we get more germs from kissing each other on the mouth than we do kissing a dog in the mouth, just ssying

Does it gross you out for your dog to eat from you? Ewwww.
It’s very similar and as long as it’s going to be washed and sanitized after then it’s really not a big deal - but as many said to each their own - If if grosses you out she shouldn’t do it again but I don’t believe it warrants a fit, just a conversation.

It is not going to hurt you, or anything for that matter.
People can be and are way more disgusting than most animals.
It’s a cultural phenomenon, generally speaking.
Some people treat the animals they own as family, you know, pets.
Other people treat the animals as they own as “just an animal”.
The level of care about the creature is definitely different.

You are so over reacting :joy: if it will be washed afterwards what is the big deal???

I grew up in a household of pets. We always let our dogs have “the last bite”, and they always got to lick the plates or bowls when we were done. We didn’t have dishwashers back then to sanitize them, either … lol

It’s not a safety or hygiene issue… it’s a personal preference issue. If it grosses you out, then maybe your partner should be more considerate & respectful of your feelings & your preferences. Maybe she could designate a certain dish or bowl to allow her dog to eat leftovers out of.

We let our dogs eat off our plates when we’re done (less for the trash and to scrub), eat out of bowls when cleaning the fridge out, etc. It’s like treat day.

Personally I think its disgusting.

I grew up with friends of mine that had a dog and anytime the dog put their nose on a plate lick the plate or a nose on a glass or anything that they would use to eat off of if the dog would touch it they would throw that item away… These people were crazy

I will only let my dog eat out of our glass bowls not plastic, my brain thinks it’s different :woman_facepalming:

Over reacting is an understatement. Wash the damned bowl and it’s as good as when you bought it.

Dude calm the fuck, its only a dog, could be worse things licking out of that bowl :rofl::rofl:

Have you ever watched a dog lick it’s but? They lick females too. They eat rotten animals . They eat any kind of poop and are really nasty but apparently so are a lot of people from reading this column. So disgusting!! Gross!! Animals will never eat out of my dishes and me use them again. They will go in the trash immediately.

Grew up with all kinds of animals. Dogs/cats always ate what was left on the plates/bowls. Dishes got soaked in hot soapy water (with a little bit of bleach) for about 30 minutes before washed.

Overreacting, it’s going to get washed.

I think it’s just fine.

It’s gross…I had a brand new brother in law who let his icky butt licking poodle lick his ice cream and then he’d lick it. I’ve been grossed out since.
Not in my house and I won’t loan out my dishes to a dog owner. If I take over a dish or dessert they can have the dish. I will not allow animals to beg at the dinner table either. And I would never allow my cats on the kitchen counter.
I love my animals. They are sweet and lovable and we do most everything together but we don’t eat together and I don’t prepare food on surfaces that they walk or sit on.

She did nothing wrong

If you are going to wash it anyway, why the fuss?

I thinks it’s gross. My dad and his wife let their dogs do it. Nana thought it was gross also and didn’t let them do that in her house.
If you are living together that’s something you guys need to discuss and come to an agreement on.

Is it any different if you licked out the bowl!!. Just a dog. Hot water and soap!! Lmao!!!.

If it’s going to be washed why does it matter. I’m sure back in the day our parents ate out of the same bowls their moms soaked their feet in. Washed in-between of course

I wouldn’t let my dogs do it but if you “threw a fit” you overreacted

Our animals always had their own food and water bowls back in 1950. I still think the same today.
