Is it normal that my 8 year old started her period?

Yeah that can start showing signs at age 6

I have heard of girls starting that early. It just depends on body fat like how big you are and if they are already going through puberty or not and possibly also genetics. I’m glad I did not start that early I started when I was 14 but I have heard of some girls starting that early not many but it is possible. I have two girls but thankfully they arenot quite there yet they will be 8 and 7 this year.

My mom started at 8 and I didn’t start until 15

My daughters doctor said girls are starting earlier because of the hormones in our food. I would take her to a doctor anyway just to be checked over. But it is normal. My daughter is 9 and is starting puberty. I didn’t start puberty until I was 16. Lol Big difference now days but it is normal.

Sister started when she was 8, I didn’t start until I was 13. She loved drinking cows milk, I hated it. Hormones in food do make a huge difference.

I was 9.5 when I got mine in 5th grade!!

I was 10 and a half.

I started at 10…literally on my 10th birthday. My daughter started at 12.

Yeah a friend of mine’s daughter started at 9. She blames all the processed food for the kids developing so much faster.
I was 11.

It is referred to as precocious puberty and I thought it was pretty odd myself being that age when I started. Just talk with her doctor about it. In result I grew to look like a woman rather quickly but I stayed pretty short while everyone else in my family is tall.

I was 9 and turned 9 a month before, my grandma and aunt where both 8 so yup I was wearing a training bra at 6 it happens

that is pretty young, The earliest I have ever heard or seen was 9 yr old, But since she has pubic hair, then I would say this is normal, Talk to her pedi Dr about this, And I would say if he is a guy & as long as she is comfortable with him, then don’t change, But you might want to find a female pedi Dr for her

8 is more common than you’d think. My daughter is 8 and developing in the chest area so I’m afraid it’s getting close for her. But I also developed at that age and didn’t start for a couple more years so I may have time…you just never know since everyone’s body is different.

My oldest daughter was 9

I got mine the end of 3rd grade

I hear a lot of girls are getting them earlier and earlier from all thr hormones and craps in food

It’s very young but with all the hormones they put in foods, it’s probably more normal than it used to be. I don’t think you need to go to the doctors. They can’t stop her puberty.

I was 10 when I started mine. Its normal every girl hits it at different times. I was 8 with size B breasts. With all the added hormones we’re eating its affecting our bodies

My bio mom & step mom both started theirs at 9yrs, I was 13, my oldest daughter is 13 & she still hasn’t, her doctor says not to worry unless she’s 16 & still no cycle :woman_shrugging: being female is so weird

Should definitely take her to a doc. Just so she can ask questions and be informed by a professional… Information is received differently from mom.

Also… Yeah… Kids are starting young. We can thank genetically modified foods and growth hormones in meat we buy. It just is the way it is. And little girls with weight issues can someone’s go into puberty early. Should you be concerned? Yes… Take her and make sure she’s healthy. And maybe you can even get some guidance to bake more informed decisions… By professionals… And not us on Facebook. Best of luck momma.

I was 8 years old when I stated mine

It’s normal. I got mine when I was 10.

My 8 year old gets her period

Five generations of 9/10 yr old . starting menstruation

My daughter started right after her 9th birthday. Her pediatrician said it’s normal a lot of girls are starting young now.

Yes it happens at this age . It’s young but not abnormal.

I was in the 4th grade…

Yep my friends daughter started at 9

Onset of puberty signs prior to age 9 in girls is considered abnormal. The main sign in girls is breast bud development. Starting your period prior to age 10 is generally considered precocious puberty and can usually be delayed with puberty blockers until age 10-11.

I got mine when I was 9 1/2

I started mine 10 days after my 10th birthday. Positive thoughts prayers and vibes your way

I was between almost 9 to 10 can’t remember what age exactly but my daughter was 8 in a half almost 9 when she started her cycle Dr said it was normal between all the hormones and stuff in food and genetics girls are starting earlier today

Processed foods full of hormones makes them develop faster … home cooked meals are better than injected fast food

Yeah its normal my oldest visited last July and got hers then my then 9 yro statred two weeks later

I was 8 when I first started!

I’ve heard of girls developing young because of their diet being high in meat and dairy that contains hormones.

My daughter started 3 days after her 8th birthday :weary: I started mine when I was 11

Way too young but yes it’s normal

If it’s only a little bit of blood she may just be wiping herself too hard. This happened to my niece around the same age. They thought she had started but that wasn’t it. She is now almost 13 and still hasn’t started.

I started at age 9, 4th grade.

I got mines more than a week before my 8th birthday. My grandmother thought it was odd and assumed the worst. However, according to the rest of my family on that side, my grandmother and my sister were “late bloomers”. Everyone else started around 8yrs old. Speak to her doctor to see what they say.

I heard when starting your period it could be a one time thing and then months go by or a year and then another period comes regular every month. I’d say wait til the next one just to be sure it will be regular. Good luck!

I was 17 but two months before I turned 18. I couldn’t imagine having one so so so young :disappointed_relieved: Doctor said mine was later because of how athletic I am.

I was 9. Please talk to her. My mum didnt because she thought I was too young, imagine being 9, finding blood in your wee and having no idea… i genuinely thought I was gonna die

I started mine at 9 I’m 30 now, some people go through puberty faster than others.

I got mine when I was nine, I had boobs in 3rd grade.

Help a mama out and respond anonymously on our forum. Is it normal that my 8 year old started her period?

Girls can start as young as 6. This is extremely normal. My child’s doctor said my 9 year old will be starting soon because she has all signs of puberty

Yes, My daughter started when she was 8 years old, 2 months until her 9th birthday. My baby is 13 now. The food that our children eat now is full of steroids and other additives etc… So yes dont be alarmed shes okay

It’s called precocious puberty. My 9yo sister is going through it and she’s had tests to make sure tumours etc aren’t causing it. I started at 12 but under 9 they’ll question it to make sure everything is okay

I started mine in grade 4

If you are worried about it, take her to the doctor and ask.

Everyone is different, so yes it’s her normal. I started at 9 was light the first year and never a full cycle until I got to my teens.

i was nearly 16 when i had my 1st period but my eldest daughter whos nearly 15 started hers at age 10 and my middle daughter who is nearly 13 hasnt started yet so i think it depends on the person and when they are ready x

Wasn’t this asked last night?

Yea it can happen unfortunately  there are some great books out there that can help her understand it more.

The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Younger Girls by Valorie Schaefer the American girl series is really good

I’d take her in just to be on the safe side, but it’s not unheard of for girls to start that early.

My mom was 9…I was 11

I think, but not sure. Puberty and weight are tied. Which is why super tiny people go through puberty later.

I would take her to see a councillor because I was her age and my mother did nothing I felt alone and gross and used to say I hate being a girl. Wish I could have had help dealing with going through that so young. X best wishes

I think my mom was 9 when she got hers. She went into menopause at like 40 too which is early.

I was the same age, 8. In March, 3rd grade. I had developed my breasts in 2nd grade. I guess it is normal? That was 44 years ago for me. That’s when all the bullying started for me. Boys picked on me, girls picked on me. Accidents at school happened, had to wear jacket tied around my waste. Just assured her that it’s OK to start this early. Prepare her with the extra underwear, pads, etc. It’s nothing to be embarrassed of. Just love her and reassure her it’s okay.

Mine started at 8 as well

I was nine when I started mine

It is normal.
I know of someone who started at 6 (she is very well developed physically now, at 12, and definitely does NOT look like a 12 year old. She looks older than I do, and I’m almost 30 :woman_shrugging:t3::fearful:)
I guess a lot of it depends on the hormones consumed from food and milk, I don’t know.
I personally started at 12 :woman_shrugging:t3:

Precocious puberty. Not necessarily, “normal,” but not uncommon.

I was 9. And now at 38 going through premenopausal symptoms.

I got mine at 9 so

My daughter started at 9, and i have a acoiple friends who’s daughter’s started at that same age

Goodness:sob: I’m pregnant with a girl! I’m definitely not ready for this:sob: sorry I’m no help I got mine at 11. I feel like thatd be hard to understand at 8 :weary: props to you mama!

It’s normal. The new typical age is 8-14. Some as young as 7 or as “old” as 16.

It is normal, ever girl is different and starts at different times I have friends who started at 8 and 9 and a friend who started at 15.

I started mine at 10. Even though that seems abnormal and odd, it is completely normal. Please contact her doctor.

I started when I was 9 so definitely not too early. Some just start younger than others.

I was 8 when I started mine and I’m perfectly fine no dr needed !

You can still get it checked out but I think it’s normal mines started at 9.

I got mine at7yrs old

Got mine in 3rd grade.

I started at 11, my mother took me to the Dr. He said it was ok, probably brought on by the surprising death of a grandfather I was very close to.

I got it at 9 but i would still get her checked out

Yes normally because of all the hormones they put in food now day

My daughter had 1 period when she was 9yo…then actually started at 11, 2 months before her 12th birthday…she started wearing a bra at 9…she was about 70 lbs and wore a 32c bra…at 12 she was 90 lbs and a 32DD bra. No extra hair until she was 12

Yeah it is much more normal now

I got mine at 12 my soon to be 13 year old got hers at 10 years old

I started at 8. Seems like it’s the early side of normal from what I was told by my kids ped. She told me last year my now 9yo will be starting any time…

Take her to see a doctor. It could be something else causing this.

Just because all these people say they got their at and early age does not mean you should assume that there is nothing wrong. Better to be safe than sorry. Take her to a doctor.

Go to the Doctor. I was 8, but had PCOS, thryoid & adrenal problems. Asked my GP if my daughter was going to start early. He said anything under 10, is unusual, but not uncommon

NORMAL my mom was same age

I started mine in the 5th grade. It could be normal but it wouldn’t hurt to get a doctor’s opinion about it

Most girls start their periods when they’re about 12, but they can start as early as 8, so it’s important to talk to girls from an early age to make sure they’re prepared. Keep track of her menstrual cycle with an app or a calendar, let the pediatrician know that you think she may have started her menstrual cycle.
