My son didn't do good on his hearing test...advice?

Panicking because my son did a hearing test at school and he didn’t do good. They did warn me that they take an entire class back at once so he could’ve been distracted. We figured him needing to be told something two or three times was just him being a toddler. Now I’m wondering if I overlooked something serious. He speaks fine and he’s known some sign language since he was 6mnths old so he can tell us basic things/knows basic ASL. We’re a bilingual household already and speak English/Spanish so I’m wondering how well he’d take to having to learn ASL if it came down to it. I had to leave a VM for his Ped so I’m waiting to hear back. I don’t know what to do in the mean time.

As a school nurse, I would say don’t be too concerned at this point. There are so many reasons they don’t pass the In first time. If he’s young, directions can be hard to follow. It’s cold and flu season, his ears might be plugged up. He might have only missed one tone on one ear. Maybe they just didn’t feel the results were reliable enough to say pass or not.
Just bring him to the pediatrician and they’ll try again, refer you elsewhere if needed.

Talk to his ped. This happened to my son. He was 4. He was also complaining of ear pain for months with no infections. When he failed the heating test his ped sent him to an audiologist. He ended up getting tubes. I don’t think they did anything good. He passed the test after the tubes. But then he began getting ear infections all the time. He’s now deaf in 1 ear because of the infections. I often wonder if the tubes did something to cause the chronic ear infections. All you can do is follow up with his Dr. Learning ASL isn’t a bad idea.

Don’t panic! Get him re-tested and wait for answers. If he needs hearing aids, no biggie, and his school participation should improve. If his hearing is fine, no problem!

Don’t stress take him to get one at a ent doctor
