My son has always had trouble pooping: Advice?

As a peds nurse, we reccomend dark karo and milk of mag, if your baby will eat more vegetables instead of fruit that helps because sugar makes it worse. Make sure your ped is aware to rule out anything else.

Gripe water works for constipation and can be given daily!

My son had problems alot when he was timy my mother in law got one on the no ose sucker cut the end a little and put warm soapy water in it and did a little enmea and then set there with his legs up he filled up two diapers and never had a problem after

My son was like around his age he would scream in pain I would have to help him it was horrible. He is 3 now and our grew it but I think it was from milk. Milk can
Constipate you. My doctor mare me switch him to almond milk Or my doctor said like 2ounces of prune juice in one bottle a day

Ask your doctor if a baby can be given a magnesium supplement. It works for me. I am old but it is a blessing for me.

My daughter was like this, I was constantly giving her prunes baby food when she was little. You can buy kids probiotics to mix in the food as well that might help regulate him more.

My son has the same problem and we just got him put on MiraLAX and everything is great now. Prior we tried everything from prune juice to karo syrup and nothing worked.

Honestly, my daughter needed a lactose free diet and quarters of exlax. She called it her “chocolate medicine” but she was literally on her hands and knees screaming and crying at 1.5 years old

My daughter had that same thing her pediatrician gave her medicine as a infant as she got older I would have to give her suppositories she is 20 now and still gets constipation

I would try an osteopath who specializes in children. It could be a blockage that a Dr can’t help with

My son has been like this his whole life. Last year we found out he has intesusseption. His bowel folds into itself and cause blockages. He basically suffers through it because the only “cure” is surgery but it has to be still folded to do so. Twice his bowel unfolded on the way to docs. He will be 7 monday and he has had it since birth

Probiotics changed my baby completely. She was fussy, super gassy and wouldn’t poop without a suppository. Within a week of giving probiotic drops in her bottle she is pooping on her own and not struggling with gas.
I use gerber brand that also has vitamin d.

See your Pediatrician!

Definitely try a GI doctor. My son had the same problem and he is now 5 years old still needing to see the GI for it.
Ask for lactulose! Safe for babies and will keep him going regularly

Probiotics but only like half of one of the little packets at a time. Store unused in the fridge till next day. Try putting some prunes in the formula when feeding. 2 tsp each bottle or every other should help. But strongly urge you to talk with doc. It may also be an underlying issue.

PROBIOTICS please please give him some :blue_heart: they have for babies…

Clear karo did the trick for all my children

Omg my son was constipated a lot but not till a little older. Check with your doc on what’s best, ask if small doses of miralax will help. It’s tasteless and you can mix it in his drinks. But check with doc first. 2 of my kids need it. And you can get a generic formula also over the counter. We’ve had to use pedia-lax glycerin suppositories more than I cared for because as a toddler he would hold in his poopers.

Watered down prune juice and prune baby food

Add molasses or corn syrup to his formula…he’ll poop regular

What formula is he on

Stop feeding cereal and juice. Prunes for breakfast and green veggies for lunch and dinner. Cut out carbs and fillers. His body is trying so help it work. 1/4 teaspoon of coconut oil in the morning. I had issues with my daughter and that helped. She would go up to 10 days without a BM. Hope it helps.

Probiotics drops saved my life

If the formula if fortified with iron, put him on formula without iron. Formula with iron added always constipated my babies. This is coming from a mom, and grandma . Made a huge difference

Pruned every night ( in the squeezable packages) and vanilla Yogourt. My little guy loves it and has it every night for bed lunch. He’s always had this problem as well.

Formula with iron is constipating-switch him to one without. Also could feed him purées prunes rhubarb and forget watered down juice. Just formula or water. Could give him lactulose too-worked for my dgtr

Does the formula have iron in it. That can make it for baby to go

Sounds like the food you’re giving him is to rich meaning his body is not ready for some of the solids you are giving him are not being able to break down in his stomach and intestines, try just giving him room tempt water no flavors and go back to fist stage introduction of foods again like marrow enriched foods, like squash ziccinni pumpkin etc steam them don’t make them thick but not to runny as well, l also had this problem with one of my babies and everything l told you l did also ok keep up the love and good work, don’t be in a hurry for them to grow up :heart::heart::heart::heart:

They do make a baby glycerin suppositories and he could be lactose intolerant or too much iron due to. Formula.

Prune baby food…or prunes and puree them…prune juice…etc

More water!!
Glycerin baby suppositories.
Water water water.

Tell your peditritan and ask for a laxative or you can try mommy bliss laxitive for baby you can find it at walmart in the baby section my son has had the same problem i got his dr to proscribe him a laxitive works really well

Prune Apple sauce is what my little guy eats when he gets like that and massaging his belly

Little bit of brown sugar (1tsp) in warm water in a bottle worked for my kids.

My son has been on osmolax its a stool softener instead of a laxitive works really well and can be on it long term without side effects

I had a very similar case. I had to stop giving solids for a few months and switch to low iron formula. Doctor said his stomach was just not mature enough for solids just yet - dr said it was common. I didnt try solids again until after 1st birthday and slowly integrated them back. Doctor warned he would be more hungry going back to liquid only diet but it did work. When I did go back to solids, if my baby did not poop for a day or so I would give some baby food packet of prunes or apples (prunes worked best).

Look into a chronic constipation my daughter who is now 3 suffers from it aswell and looking back on it I think she’s had it since she was a few months - definitely talk to your healthcare nurse and doctor

Been that way all my life my mama was told that all 4 of us kids had super long colins and by the time it get down there it’s so packed it hard cause the Colin is so long mama always gave us milk of Magnesia, every Morning.

Try pear juice or prune juice. Plums are good also. Cool peppermint tea wont hurt and digestive biscuits r good too

Oh yes and magnesium! Guaranteed to make you poop lol

It’s time to see a pediatric GI specialist. Pear juice is a better alternative to apple juice which can cause gas and bloating. It sounds like a stool softener is needed and not a laxative. GI will be able to recommend something safe.

My daughter seems to have always been constipated. We give her prune juice watered down every day. Then once she is regular every other day. She’s almost 3 and that’s still the only thing that helps her.

This may be a repeat of what some other moms have said. But definitely probiotics might help. Also, what if you look into some breast milk donors? To try and get him off the formula? If he’s 8 months old, technically it’ll be for a few more months bc at a year they can get off formula anyway and start a different milk source. Just a thought. Breast milk is a lot easier I digest on the tummy. So it may do the trick

Yogurt, lots of water
Veggies stay away from cheese

Mirilax 7g in the morning in his bottle I was having the same issue till my doctor recommended to do this and it has helped alot

See a specialist ASAP.

Definitely more fiber and try not putting as much water in the juice. Maybe 60/40. Laxatives are okay. I used the baby ones and only did just a squeeze not the whole thing. Look on formula websites for free samples of formula and see if something helps.

Prunes!! They work wonders

Can you switch to donor milk and cut out solids?

apple sauce, baby apple juice, if that dont work formula change

Could be lactose intolerant

Start by Giving 1/2 water and 1/2 prune juice! Or 1/4 water to 3/4 prune juice…this happen to my oldest son also…we also made sure if given formula with iron (causes constipation) to mix with more water…we made several calls to doctor and by time they recommended prune juice I was at my wits end as a mommy bear!

This lady said that she’s been to multiple doctors and nurses and some of you people must have not read. Telling her to see her doctor pediatrician she just got done telling you she has

Ask to see a pediatric gastroenterologist. If the pediatricians you are seeing are not providing long lasting solutions, time to see the next level

Possibly lactose intolerant? Drs need to check. If he is, using anything for the constipation most likely won’t help because of the formula.

prune yogurt, my little one was always constipated. I would put half milk and half prune yogurt in her bottle and that helped so much!

Fix him so coat milk see if it helps.

My son’s take an rx medimusal

There’s massages that help the gi tract. Look into natural remedies but make sure with Dr that they are safe with meds currently using

Lèha Tasker. This sounds like Squish fish. Still haven’t found something to help him and get told to use the same stuff.

Dark Karo syrup should NEVER be recommended for babies under 2. It can cause botulism and can kill.

When my son was younger he had a hard time put karo syrup in his formula and his water bottles and it worked fine

My doctor told me to give my daughter 15ML of pear juice morning and night and it helps her poop

Teaspoon kero syrup in his. Bottle 2 times a day

Yes! Our piece of shit pediatrician NEVER once told us about lactose intolerance or mentioned switching formula. I would try Soy or nurtramigin. STOP THE SUPPOSITORIES! Hes little booty could become dependent on it. I would try half a cap of miralax to start

My daughter was the same way! Her dr kept saying “give her more fruits and apple juice” blah blah blah! It was to the point where she would bleed when pooping. I took her over an hour away to a childrens hospital and they quickly got her in to see a Gastro dr. They have her on meds for it and its helped SO MUCH! Her poops are finally soft and aren’t hurting her. This all started when she turned 6 months. Shes 2.5 now.

They gave my son MiraLAX

Both my boys. We tried everything there is and ended up having to do suppositories with my oldest every few days. He is 7 now and still will go days without going and when he does its little rabbit turds. My youngest is 2mo and things r starting to go the same way. He finally will go and it’s very thick and he struggles then a few hours after getting that out he will have a normal stool. I’m sorry ur dealing with this momma!!! Best of luck.

I put a but of brown sugar in water helped my daughter

Prune juice and organic sensitive formula (separately)

Going to waded into this. My daughter who is 43 years old. Had similar situation. Get box of prunes a good brand. Put a few in a saucepan with water to cover them. Medium heat on stove. Cook them down. Then strain the juice. Put 3-1 mix of 3 parts water and 1 of juice. Start with this juice for him. If that doesn’t help add a bit more juice. Natural laxative. Also . When he has these hard bowel movements placing him in a warm bath may aleve some of his problems. If he likes baths. Old school here.

Prunes work awesome, definitely your child needs them to help with easing the straining and pain. Get him used to eating them, and raisins work good too, since they’re sweet he should eat them just crush them good until he has the teeth to chew them.

Try giving him Prunes the Purity one 3 times a week to start off and lessen the amount as his bowels work better so that they dont become dependant on the prunes.Prunes are a more natural way to help him instead of laxatives

This stuff has worked well for my 1 year old grandson. My daughter has used it since he was about 5 months old as needed.

Is he drinking enough boiled water(that’s cooled down of course) maybe that will help or you need to change his diet

My daughter had issues with what the doctor called chronic constipation and for six years she was in and out of hospital and on daily laxatives nurses having to hold her down to give either suppositories or putting a tube up her nose for clean out medication and then they wanted to surgically shorten her bowel I refused and went to a naturopath who said she has a underdeveloped bowel we followed his clean diet and took some supplements and within six months 80% improvement and she’s never been back to hospital

We started my daughter on plum or pear juice before she was able to take miralax. Now that she is older we watch her diet and give her a probiotic everyday to help her.

As a chronic constipation sufferer, a couple things. The laxatives are probably doing more harm than good, as it does the work instead of forcing the muscles to do their job. Prune juice works really well, but again, is just a crutch that should occasionally be used. MiraLax also makes the gut dependent and sluggish. Diet change is your best bet. My oldest had those clay poops and we had to switch formulas a few times to get things right for her. Dairy free ended up being the best bet for her. Now, she gets a good balance with light dairy and high fiber and she poops like a dream, but if we stray from her diet, the constipation comes back. This is something best discussed with your baby’s doctor, but a lot of them aren’t knowledgeable of the effects the laxatives can have on long term gut health. As you stated though, the doctor approach isn’t working so perhaps find another. The formula we used was similac Alimentum. Hope this helps.

Can sometimes be a sign of to much iron.

My twins both had a milk intolerance… which means I finally figured out they couldnt have any dairy. Sadly, it took years and doctors were no help. So, you mY have some trial and error…I would recommend trying to decrease any dairy products and increase fruits and vegetables. You can also try non dairy or lactose free milk products.

My oldest daughter had the same issue try putting him on low iron formula he may have to much open in his body and also mix the Karo syrup with the formula it will help

I went through this with my daughter, switched her to parents choice low iron formula and she never had a problem again

My daughter had pretty much the same issue. The only thing that helped was eliminating gluten. She has a gluten intolerance.

Prune juice - a little and not watered down will clean him out (my guy likes cheese and I had inadvertently given him cheese, bananas, and some other food that blocked him up). So much poop after giving him the prune juice!! If it works, maybe give him a little every day and change to a low iron formula

A babies rectum can become dependent on the q tip thing. My pedi told me to give a table spoon of milk of magnesia once a day

Give him apple juice it goes thru babies so fast at least for my daughter and my friend’s son they are a month apart

Sounds like my oldest daughter. She has what they call encoprisis. Which is where she doesnt get the feeling or urge to tell her she needs to poop. And at 8 months old was having bowel movements the size of a 12 oz soda can. She now has a daily regimen of meds shes on per her gastrointestinal drs orders.

Clay color stools all the time? Have him checked out before you experiment with OTC meds. Collect a stool sample and take it with you when you see the doctor.

Prunes are good for that. My oldest had a lot of problems with that. Definitely look into probiotics as well. They can be very helpful. They make an infant brand.

I give my 9 month old pureed prunes, Gerber has apple/prune baby food, shes not a huge fan of it but I can usually get her to take a couple of bites at a time. I’ll also give her apple/prune juice (not diluted). If the doctor has not told you to do a suppository, please dont do a suppository. His digestive tract is already having issues and you may inadvertently be causing more issues for him down the road if they are not specifically prescribed to him.

I’m so sorry to hear that my son had the same thing he’s 3 years old now he was put on miralax since he was 8 months old ask your doctor it helped him a lot

My grandson had this problem until he was 6 yrs.old.Went to Vanderbilt to see a pediatric gastroenterologist dr.She told my daughter to stop and get an enema first and then put him on milk of magnesia every day for a year.It softens the stool and is not habit forming. But he was older than your baby so I would ask his dr.first.

My daughter was like this and we switched to Similac sensitive. Totally stopped

Use rastolalax daily at night time. My son qas backed up to the point of having to be admitted to picu . Add it to a bit of water and just make sure hes hydrated . Apple juice works good too if worried about sugar just water it down. Sugar helps alot to pull fluid to the bowels .

My daughter had a similar issue when she was 14 - 20 months. Our Pediatrician recommended more fibre, more water and she also suggested restoralax, the baby can take it for a long period of time (my daughter was on it for 5 months) as there are no ingredients that force the body to become dependent on it. Made a HUGE difference and as the poops get softer and easier to get out, you slowly decrease the amount of the laxative. But more fibre is the thing that will help it stay softer. Pears, apple juice, apple sauce, blueberries and mangos are all good options! Good luck Mama, your doing great!!

What kind of juice? Try apple juice. Or even prune juice ( watered down) maybe try pureed prunes.

Isn’t there an over the counter baby laxative??

Try goats milk… In stead of formula . mayb water down his formula

Prune juice and pureed prunes :slightly_smiling_face: and hydrate! Pedialyte might not be working as well as you want it to you because its sodium content is higher. I would just stick with the prune juice :kissing_heart: you are doing great mama. My daughter had this issue as well.

It might not hurt to add a little more water into his formula as well. I figured out I was being a little too generous with the formula powder ratio to water.
