My teen has decided to quit drinking caffeine...how can I help him?

My 14 year old son decided to quit drinking caffeine 2 days ago it was his own decision which I think is great but today is the 3rd day he’s woke up with a terrible terrible headache!!! He is literally in pain but refuses to drink caffeine bc he said he knows that’s what is causing it and he doesn’t want to drink caffeine anymore! He doesn’t have a fever or any other symptoms so I also am assuming it is from not having the caffeine!!!??? I’ve only given him Tylenol but I told him to take a shower and we would go get something to help ease the pain!! Does anyone know what I could get to help with the headaches or know what’s good to do when stopping caffeine!!!?? I feel so bad for him he’s literally in the shower now moaning in pain!!! Also if anyone thinks he should go to doctor let me know i can do that too I just didn’t know if it was necessary or not!!! Thanks y’all!!!

Headache is the main symptom of caffeine withdrawal. It eases and passes over a few days. Continue with pain relief !

Lots of fluids to keep fully hydrated and paracetamol. He’s having withdrawals

Caffeine withdrawal. He’ll be fine in a few days. For now continue with the tylenol and ibuprofen, rotate it. Alternating ice packs and heating pads on my head helps a lot with my migraines. Just have him relax in his room quietly for a few days…

I recently stopped caffeine as well and had a bad headache for a couple days because Tylenol wasn’t working for me. I went out and got some excedrin migraine pills and that’s what took it away! They haven’t been back.

Doctors will not do anything. I done the same thing when I stopped caffeine and it will be better in a few days.Excedrin migraine is what helped me.

Caffeine headaches can be brutal. Mine went away within a week of cutting caffeine out of my diet. Drinking lots of water helped ease my headaches. The withdrawal is literally the worst part. If he can survive the week of headaches he will be fine 🫶🏻

He doesn’t need to go a doctor! It’s just from not drinking caffeine

Caffeine is technically a drug. He will experience withdrawal without it. Which usually is terrible headaches and achy body. Have him drink plenty of water to flush his system.

I’m 3 years free of caffeine at first I had to trick my brain with caffeine fagyo and pop it took about a week and the headaches stopped and I started being more awake and energetic on my own

Water water and more water! Good job for quitting if he knows it’s becoming too much!

Give him some ibuprofen also. You can rotate ibuprofen & Tylenol.

I had a headache for about a week then the cravings were gone and that was from drinking 6-8 cans of Pepsi a day. I haven’t touched it in about 6 years now. The green advil liquid gels are the best for headache relief

Water and sleep. Excedrin for sure just don’t tell him the tiny amount of caffeine that’s in it lol

As many others have pointed out, it’s caffeine withdrawal, and he is determined to power through it, so be as supportive as possible. Lots of water, and what helped me was a cold compress on the front of my head like half on my forehead, and half on my head above my hairline. all the best for him.

Yep caffeine withdrawal that’s why I tried not giving my children caffeine. However as they get older you don’t have that much control over what they drink when you are not around.

He’s 14. Give him advil and wait it out. All you can do.

It’s caffeine withdrawal. He needs to drink plenty of water and just ride it through. It’s just a headache, not a medical emergency. He’s got this.

Plenty of water and an Excedrin. It has caffeine in it. Just don’t tell him. It’s just enough to get rid of the head ache, but not enough to stay dependent on it.

Water water and more water .

I’ve done that same thing and the headaches only last for a few days take some ibuprofen some Tylenol you’ll be good

Water water water. Drink tons of water daily. The headaches will go away.

A thought just occurred to me, this would be a really good time to remind him that this withdrawal is nothing compared to getting into drugs and alcohol, I hope he feels better soon!

Make sure he drinks plenty of water.

Make sure he is drinking half of his body weight in oz of water.

An ice pack will help!
And yes it’s withdrawal from the caffeine.

It’s just withdrawals. Give him some headache meds and tea

Quitting cold turkey is tough! Kudos to him. Unfortunately the only way past the addiction is through it. I would recommend Ibuprofen rather than tylenol (because Tylenol inhibits the livers ability to detox the body) and hot, steamy showers. It will pass in a few days. Tell him to hang in there…

I think you should get him the Excedrin because the caffeine in it will help but its minimal so it’s not going to keep him dependent on it.

Aleve for the headaches and hydrate .

I had to stop my daughter from caffeine. She had seizures in school this year. Energy drinks

I had this when I quit drinking Pepsi. Lasted about a week. Lived on aspirin for that week. Nothing much to do about it. Just withdrawal.

Yea if I go without caffeine sometimes I’ll get a headache as well. Tylenol never works for me…I use aleve or Excedrin.

I always had to cut back slowly when I stopped drinking caffeine, have him stick an ice pack on the back of his neck, that’s what always helps me.

I can’t imagine a 14yo having caffeine everyday to cause withdrawal. I’m glad he’s making a good decision for himself to quit. It will last about a week. Try excedrin and some electrolytes

Hes going through withdrawal. Water and maybe some pain relievers.

Drink lots of water mine took about a wk to go away

Give him some Tylenol and there’s some stuff that you buy called tension headache medicine will help ease it

650mg of Tylenol, 25mg of Benadryl, and a zofran. That mixture always kicks a migraine for me (doctor prescribed at home combo) or pickle juice, it’s worked

Drink lots of water. And wait it out.

It’s 100 percent what’s causing it but good new is it only lasts about a week. When I was quitting drinking pop I’d have just a very small cup of tea and that’d help with the headache because nothing worked at all and it got unbearable. After a week the headaches were gone and I didn’t need any more caffeine.

It’s caffeine withdrawal. I would suggest naproxen or ibuprofen and rotate it with Tylenol. You can take the naproxen/ibuprofen first then 4 hours later take Tylenol, 4-6 hours later naproxen/ibuprofen. Don’t get anything labeled as Migraine or pain relief plus because those have caffeine in them.

Depending on what he drinks…he could try cutting out the amount of by 50% each week until he’s not drinking anything with caffeine in it.

And no lol dont go to a doctor for caffeine withdrawals

Not sure how much caffeine he was getting before but sometimes going cold Turkey is not best. He should try slowly weaning off of it. Cut back one drink for a few days. Then cut another. Give his body sometime to get used to it.

Keep vitamin water on hand and have him drink one a day for the first 3 weeks. Doing so helps curb the head aches caused by caffeine withdrawals. After 3 weeks the headaches subside and after a few months even just the smell of soda will make him nauseous. Been carbonation and caffeine free for 7 years and if not for a 2 months slip would have been close to 14.

the headache will go away after about a day if withdraw from the caffeine been there it’s not great but it does have a end point

I took midol to get over the hump of caffeine withdrawal. It worked great!
