I would check with a lactation consultant, but in the meantime I would ice to reduce swelling and then try to massage the swelling back away from your nipple (it helps to do this while laying on your back) and then if pumping isn’t working try hand expression and massaging out those knots. If you are super engorged baby might not be able to latch well enough to express the milk because the tissue is too firm.
I pumped all the milk out from day one and that’s how I fed my son for a whole year. Try to take it easy and do the best that you can. My son never latched on to my breast. Having babies is stressful!
Take a hot shower, letting water hit your chest… it releases milk ducts and the milk. Doesn’t effect your milk supply. I did this often because I had large amounts of milk produce.
Take just an hour of me time. You need to feel relaxed so your milk will let down. This happened to me with my first and when it finally let down it was so much milk. Have daddy or a family member watch the baby and do something for you. A hot bath. Where you dont have to worry about anything. I know how bad it hurts. I hope you feel better soon!!
It’s the first one? Things are crazy intense w/ the first! My boobs were like torpedoes, hand express and use your breast pump for 30 minutes straight I’m not joking watch a whole episode of something with the pump on you. And get ready to do it all again in a few hours. In the early days I had so much extra milk, expect this for a couple more weeks. Some of us are more likely to over engorgement and mastitis. Freeze all that extra milk!
I had this happen with my premie, use one of those battery operated cheep massagers and while pumping rub the massager in circles around your boob on all sides on every spot you can reach moving towards the pump. This helped so very much. You can also do ths wth a warm rag laying across the boob and using the massager at the same time
You could try taking sunflower lecithin to help with clogs/ thin out your breat milk so it makes it easier to pump out.
If you are getting lumpy and sore try massaging them and expressing a little bit in the shower with hot water it helped me a ton
I used the Thompson Method (there is a group on FB) and they helped me out tremendously!!! I stopped pumping and started feeding on demand. Breastfeeding the Thompson Method is the page, my little guy and I were successful for almost a year! Good luck, and remember, every womans body is different, so what works for one person may not always work for the next…
I used to self express.the pump never worked for me.unconfortable at first but you will get used to it.if your engorged thats a good sign your body is making alot of milk.
If you have a hand pump try to pump in the shower while massaging and running water on them. You have all the right knowledge just don’t give up and keep trying
I had to hold my kids while I pumped to get anything. It’s so dumb how our bodies work sometimes.
Get in the shower and have the water as hot as you can stand. It will start spraying and you can hand express some then try again with the baby. Try to relax. You’ve got this mama
Swollen from the milk coming in. Pumping will make the issue worst just deal with it for the day or 2.
This happened to me after having my baby. Hot showers help milk to come out but wont do nothing for engorged breasts. Cold compresses help! But don’t leave the cold compresses on for longer than 15 minutes. You can keep pumping & massage your breasts in the shower to help get the milk flowing but you will stay engorged for a few days.
I was engorged for about 4 days & it was horrible but you’ll make it through! After that engorgement subsides your milk will start coming in. My baby is 3 weeks old & it took about 2 & a half weeks for me to actually be able to feel when my milk is being let down.
Clogged milk duct pump as much as you can and breastfeed you need to get it unclogged
Keep pumping and feeding
Pump more frequently.
Don’t drink too much.
Same exact thing happened to me…I put my baby in a diaper right on my chest and let down happened very quickly…then pumped until I felt better and had my babies latch on 1 and pump the other for a while. Believe it or not this will likely increase your milk production. I had to start freezing my milk almost immediately and started cycling through that rather than breastfeeding at every feeding. Good luck! You can do this!!!
Contact lactation specialist! Some pediatric doctors have one on staff or the ones from the hospital. It’s not always easy but very rewarding if you can breastfeed your child rather than bottle; pump only for backup milk.
Good luck!
