Pros and cons of getting your tubes tied?

I am making an appointment with my doctor to get my tubes tied. Please give me some pros and cons. Do I have to stay the night? Does it hurt, and for how long after? Things like that. I know I can ask my doctor these questions, but I would like to hear from other people how it is after. I’m the only one in my friend’s group that has kids, so I can’t ask them, and all my family is still having kids, so I can’t get feedback on them as well.

It caused me to have heavier periods that lasted longer. With much more pain. My daughter and many other I know had the same experience

I had mine removed. It reduces the risk of ovarian cancer. I went in at 8am and was home by 3pm. I had zero pain and didn’t need Tylenol or any of the percocets they gave me. My cycles went from 5 days heavy to 3 days light.

Horrible cramps and heavy periods after. I have a couple friends who ended up getting a hysterectomy after a few yrs.

This is a great question! I’ve been wanting to get mine done as well but nervous at the same time!

I had mine done 4 years ago after 3 babies. Went in early in the morning, and went home by the afternoon. I made sure to have someone to help me and take care of my kiddos for 48 hours after surgery. I was sore and exhausted but that was it. No complications or aftermath for me.

Everyone is different. You’ll do what’s right for you and your family. If you do have the surgery, praying for you!

I had mine tied right after i had my son.it wasnt bad my periods are different at times.mines dye to menopause

I had two babies lost one.

I regret doing mine! Got PCOS a year later after doing them, heavy periods lots of cramping! I also have to still use BC so it really defeated the purpose  I wish I never did it and I’m hoping for an early hysterectomy

I had my tubes completely removed about 10 years ago. And it was just a day surgery, they make two small incisions one above the belly button and below if I remember correctly.

I couldn’t lift things for about a week, and no sex or strenuous activity for 4 weeks. I waited longer. But it wasn’t painful, just annoying if anything.

My periods have actually gotten much lighter and only last a few days.

I had my tubal today after I had our fourth child. So I was still recovering from childbirth but my pain was not bad. The only issue I have right now is my doctor did tell me that my periods would get heavier and the cramping could be worse. She was correct on both of those however I have gone from having a 7-Day period to a 4-day period since I’ve had it done. I would do it again though.

Had mine done heavy periods and about 6 years later had a full hysterectomy I was only 39 when I had a hysterectomy

I got a tubal ligation. General anesthesia, went home to rested. I worked 2 days after

I had my tubes removed after I had my baby via c-section last July. I bled so much after I had him and each period is horrible. Plus side no more babies.

I had pain for about 3 days. Felt like I had done about 1000 sit ups. No problems after at all

I had mine done in December after the birth of my son. I had a tubal ligation and my cycles are much shorter and not very heavy.

I stayed in hospital a few hours. I didn’t need and pain meds. Went snowmobiling the next day. My periods are further apart and shorter. Also I had my tubes removed. No chance of babies.

I had my tubes removed 6 weeks after my 3rd baby was born. I checked in the center in the morning and was home by the afternoon. I was up and moving the next day taking care of my kids. After having 3 births the pain was nothing just a little tender. My periods haven’t changed but then again they were never regular and my cramps have always sucked. But knowing I won’t have another baby is great. My boyfriend and I don’t have to worry about any drunkin accidents.

No one informed me, so I’m informing you, they literally superglue your incisions shut. No stitches. Freaked me right out.

My periods were so much worse after having my tubes tied and so were my cramps. I ended up having a partial hysterectomy six months after. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone!

I had a tubal ligation after my 3rd child. 6 1/2 years later I had a ectopic pregnancy. This time they removed both my tubes

I had mine done. Cramps got worse after I had it done and I had a baby 6 years later. All in all, I wouldn’t do it again if I could go back in time.

Please research post tubal ligation syndrome. It isn’t a joke. This last 10 years have been hell on me.

Welp that’s enough info to put me off tying mine :joy:

I had my tubes tied after my 3rd baby. He was a c-section so can’t comment on the recovery. However it was great not having to be on birth control. Periods were very regular until I had to have a hysterectomy after 9yrs due to Adenomyosis, best decision I made. No more Periods or pain now.

I had the Essure implants. Went in on a Monday morning. Was home by mid afternoon tired from anesthesia. Was back to work Wednesday. No pain, no side effects, no issues. Periods are lighter and shorter.

I had my tubes tied in June after my last baby. I only have a period about every 3 months. With each period I spend 2 days bleeding so much I bleed through my clothes in an hour. Then I spend the next 2 days with a light period

Pros-- no more babies, cons–no more babies!

Well I had mine done 2yrs ago and just lost my right side fallopian tube so I’d say hard pass.

I had mine done 5 yrs ago the healing process was about 3 days the crampi g and periods are much worse not but I don’t have anymore babies

I had a hysteroscopy, uteran ablation, and tubal ligation all at once. They put me to sleep was home couple hours later just a few stitches an mild cramping worst part is the referred pain in my shoulders from the gas they use to fill your abdomen with during surgery but not everyone gets referred pain.

I had my done 16 years ago and I had no problems. I remember that I had to stay in the recovery room for a little while but when I was discharge I left from there and went straight to the dealership and got a new car. But I’m also the same person that had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time and was eating Popeyes a few hours later :woman_shrugging:t4:

Had my done February 2020, best thing I could have done. No issues at all

I got mine done right after I had my son the next day and I can honestly say I hurt for the first week or so. I also for some reason had a huge bruise on the side of my stomach that stayed for about 2 weeks. My stomach for some reason still feels weird and I just started my first period after baby and I can honestly say it’s made me hurt but not too bad.

Is burning them a better solution i wonder

I do not regret it at all. My periods got lighter and shorter.

I had my 3rd baby girl November 29th, had my tubes removed in February. I was down for about two days after (not bed ridden just in a lot of pain) … no pain in my belly or where the incisions were, the pain was from the gas they use to inflate your belly during the surgery. My shoulder felt dislocated and my rib felt broke for about two days then the third day it eased up. I’ve bled a little more since but nothing to bad and no severe cramps with my periods either.

Had mine done almost a year ago. I started hemorrhaging right after I woke up. Instead of knocking me back out they worked on me vaginally. 100% worst pain of my life! The nurse had to hold my husband back cause he wanted to come in the room for me so bad. Then I got staph infection at my incision site. That sucked. Hurt like hell. But I hear most women don’t struggle really with recovery. Periods sucked for a few months but I had also just had a baby so of course everything was just out of whack at that point. Periods are normal now. They’re actually more regular now than they were before. :woman_shrugging: no problems with cramps or anything. But I do think it was all worth it. I had 2 babies while on the pill so really not trying to risk it. 3 babies total for me and that is enough!

I had my tubes removed about a year ago. The day of and after I was a little sore. But overall I healed quickly and wasn’t that painful. The only con of it, is my cramps have become more painful.

Periods are horrible. I wouldnt get it done if i had my way. Blood soaks through my clothes and underwear

I already deal with super intense period cramps, but I’m still breastfeeding and haven’t had a period, so I can’t tell you if there is a difference or not. I had mine removed two weeks ago today (April 13). I went home the same day. I honestly stopped hurting after the first couple of days, but I’m fine now. I bled afterwards for a little bit, but nothing painful.

It’s easier n less invasion for the guy to do it but if you really want to it’s gonna be a couple weeks recovery

My daughter had hers earlier this month at 33. She said no its not overnight. You are so doped up from meds at first from anesthesia you don’t hurt at first. Later in the evening yes the first two days are uncomfortable so sleep a lot. It gets easier very quickly within a few days you won’t feel it. Its worth it, takes the stress of birth control away for good.

In and out same day couldn’t even see where they did it. No pain at all

i just got mine removed 3 weeks ago and i was only sore for about a week but i am so glad i did it. i always had horrible heavy and painful periods and i had my first period and it only lasted 3 days and was so light i only had to wear a panty liner lol

Mine was a day surgery back in '04. I was a bit sore for a few hours after, but my husband and I went on date that night and had fun. Honestly, I have zero cons on this.

Walking after a tubal is most important because of the gas buildup. Gas hurts more than the surgery Try not to lift more that 10 lbs to keep from internal bleeding. Deep coughing the first few days if you feel like coughing. Hold you tummy while you cough so it want hurt so bad. It’s a relatively easy surgery and the Doctor probably lets you go to work soon but you have to take care and be careful because after all your your abdomen was invaded and you want to keep from bleeding or infection

I was gonna get mine done but seen some of the stories in this group and decided I’d rather take my chances with good ol birth control😅

I was just a little sore. Nothing major though

I got an ablation and tubes tied at the same time 3 years ago. No periods afterward. Best thing I ever done! Down time is about a week. Just uncomfortable but not unbearable.

I got mine done I had my last baby No6 at 44 and the only reason I got my done was because i became a grandmother at 45 LOL

No overnight for me I even waited 2 years after my daughter was born. I wished I had done it when she was born. I thought it was worse then my c section. But best choice I made

In and out in just a few hours. The gas made my shoulders hurt for the rest of the day but other than that no pain. My periods went form 7 days with heavy bleeding for 4 to 5 days with only heavy bleeding for 2. I have zero complaints

I had tubes cut and burned in 2003, some discomfort after. Had horrible heavy periods after. About 12 years later, had an ablation done. No periods no babies.

Mine was an outpatient surgery. In and out in a couple hours. Not to much pain, rested on the couch as much as my ex would allow for about a day. Then was up and moving the very next day. Periods have gotten a little more heavy and painful but not lasting nearly as long. Not a single complaint here

Depends on why you’re doing it. If it’s just for birth control then have your partner get snipped. Much easier for guys.

It’s sore after. My periods are intense. A massacre if you will. Cramps are debilitating. And only last like 3 days and that’s pushing it. But hey. No more kids🤷🏻‍♀️

Depends on how old you are. I got it done at 35, after three kids. Couple years later (after 20 year marriage) got divorced.
I regretted having done it to early.

There are NO cons!! It’s AMAZING it’s FREEING it’s absolutely one of the BEST choices I’ve ever made for myself!

I had mine done after my last son born … painful for couple weeks instant weight gain . I had mood swings and for years was on birth control to help w hormones. 10 years after got pregnant in my tube and ended losing everything on left side , female stuff. Then 2 years later historectomy . I do think if I had to do over. I would not have it done

Just make sure you are doing it for u not for anyone else Nd make sure u don’t want anymore kids I know u can get it reversed but it don’t always work I didn’t get mine done. And I. Glad we waited because we decided we wanted one more if God allows I would lo c e another boy but just make sure u have weighed the good and bad and make the best decision for you

The only thing I can give on this topic is that my sister in law got pregnant twice after having her tubes tied so be careful

I was a little sore for a day or two but that was it. Was home like 3 hrs after surgery. Had it done 4 yrs ago and no issues

I was down a couple of days. No more.

Pros… No more babies…
Cons… no more babies…

Really it’s a decision only you… or you and your partner can make

I was on and out of the hospital in 2 hours ,without pain ,and I went to work that night

I am fairly certain I’m done having babies but a part of me won’t know for sure so I tried the iud and I love it! It’s just as effective as getting your tubes tied but you can take it out when and if you change your mind. Also no longer have my period so that’s a bonus for me.

I just had my tubal and my doctor completely removed my tubes. She said 0% chance of future pregnancies and it lowers the chance of ovarian cancer… I went in at 630 am for pre- op and was out by 11. I was high as a kit from the meds from the surgury but besides that and my neck and shoulder killing me from the gas it was fine. They gave me pain meds to take for the week after but I didn’t really need them. I just relaxed for a couple of days. I mean as much as I could with 4 kids.

I was up doing what I normally do within 2 days. No issues at all. Had mine tied, cut & burned 15 years ago.

I had one done 8 years ago I’m telling you now what I wished someone told me about them, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT SO YOU MAY NOT HAVE ANY ISSUES but here is what I dealt with… first the surgery is t bad it is usually outpatient and do home an hour or so after, the cramps right after are pretty rough but doable. My periods were HORRID, CRAMPS HORRID, my life would almost come to a complete halt during my periods, they were plumb AWFUL! The night sweats, bleeding, mood swings off the chain I was ready to take on the world lol no joke. There are so many ways a tubal CAN affect you that doctors do not tell you about. Post Tibal Ligation Syndrome is a REAL THING! That being said I FINALLY had all I could take after being just miserable for 7 years after mine I got an ablation done a year ago July and I’m am so GRATEFUL! No more periods, no more night sweats, no more nothing! AS I SAID BEFORE not everyone experiences that stuff but I sure did.

Mine was done while having a c-section with my second… Twice as much pain than my first but I expected it to be cause it was double the pain as far as healing, the cramps can be awful, the periods are awful. Lasting about 3 days depending on how stressed I am. No more than 5. But no more kids

Sore for a week after, but it was the BIGGEST regret of my life! I got a divorce 18 years after being with my Ex Husband. I have an amazing life now and I’m getting married to an amazing man! Unfortunately we haven’t had luck with IVf and it’s so expensive! If I would have just waited to get my tubed tied 5 years later…it would have been life changing. My advice, if its not medically necessary, DONT do it.

I having done in my early 40’s after having 3 children and more then 20 years married, same day surgery done in less than an hour, took no pain meds(had 2 C-sections) had some pain for a couple of days, my husband and I were changing the brakes on one of our vehicles later in the day after I had taken a nap.

Tender for a week or less. Have them burned otherwise they can re-connect. I was bloated cause they expand that area to perform surgery. I was an outpatient so left that day. Dr went through my belly button. No intercourse for 3 weeks I think. Healing time. If allergic to Sulfa or Iodine tell them right away. They use it during surgery. Everything will be fine, I never regretted my choice,

As far as the experience of it I had no problems recovering. We was very sure we were done having children. Had my tubes tied this past december… I’m currently pregnant again with our 4 th 13 weeks along… told the hubby he could get diced now… apparently we are in the rare 6 % that it doesn’t work for and need double coverage lol

Only thing ive noticed after 6 months is my period is more painful but shorter so :person_shrugging:

I had mine cut, tied and burned 15 years ago. No issues and it was done laparoscopicly so I was in and out in a few hrs, no overnight and not much pain and no scar. Just had to keep reminding myself to keep baby off my tummy area and no bending and heavy lifting for about a week. I just stayed in the bed and chilled and cuddled with my kids mostly. Having help so you can relax and recover is key.

Everyone’ experiences are different though. Good luck!

Get it burnt and removed. Not just tied, tied does not work.

No you don’t have to stay night mine was about 4-5 hours from rolling back to triage to waking up in triage again. It hurts like you worked out your stomach too much. But after a few days your more able to walk around, don’t rest something on it or against it (like a counter when cutting or doing dishes). You will get a check up appt then good to go

I had my tubal at the same time as my last c-section, so I’m not sure about how long the hospital stay is or what recovery from just a tubal is. I will say this though, if I could do it again, I wouldn’t have gotten mine tied. After getting my tubal, I gained weight and my periods got so much worse. Before my tubal, I would have some mild cramping, tender boobs and I would spot the first day, have some normal bleeding for 2 days, spot my last day and then done. After my tubal, everything got progressively worse. Horrible cramps, whole body aches, my boobs so sore I could barely touch them. And the bleeding was out of control. I would bleed heavy for like 5 days and then it would stop, then I would start bleeding for another 5 days. It. Was. Miserable. I finally went to my GYN for help. I was going to get a hysterectomy, but they found cancerous cells and I had to have surgery. I had an IUD put in at the time of surgery. I bled for a while after but that was from the surgery. After that stopped, I’ve had zero bleeding. I get some light cramps around when my period should start, they last about a day and then nothing. I wouldn’t recommend a tubal to ANYONE!!

i went in at 7am got home around 2pm, was a little sore but not too bad with pain meds. was taking care of both my kids alone the next day.

I had mine a little over a year ago. I get heavier periods but they’ve shortened by a couple days. I didn’t have much discomfort I was back to taking care of the kids when my husband went back to work a couple days later

I had a tubal liagation done and i was only off work a week and was only there from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.! Highly recommended!

I had a tubal which made my cycle last for 8 months without a break. 9th month my dr had to perform a total hysterectomy which is by far the best thing I’ve ever done.

I had tubal litigation. The surgery and recovery was easy. I have had month long periods afterwards though. I was seen by my dr in December and she prescribed me birth control to try and help regulate my cycle because I was bleeding for six months. I go back to be seen in June and I’m not convinced the birth control has helped regulate me… so I’m not sure what my next option is going to be. Just a lot to consider. Everyone is different though. I feel like after reading all of these comments I would think it’s safe to say that heavy and prolonged bleeding is definitely a con against tubal litigation. Best of luck.

I had mine in 2017. It was done laparoscopically. The procedure itself was completed in 15-20 mins. I was slightly sore like a light abdominal workout but just in the incision area ,no prescription pain medication was needed. I was also sleeping on my stomach that same night . No complications afterwards at all. Best decision ever.

I had mine done ,I went in early morning and left that afternoon, I had to go potty before they would let me go . They went in my belly button small scar . I didn’t have much pain after the Crazy pain fron the Gas they used to bloat me up with . It got trapped in my shoulders and on tbe 35 min drive home it was crazy pain but it worked out and by the time the pain meds kicked in I sleep. No issues since.

I had it done 2 weeks after my baby was born that was in 2009 no pain just an uneasy feeling for about 20 minutes it’s 11 years later and I still don’t have any issues :grin::grin:

Mine were removed, about a week of recovery for that

I’m not sure where you are but I’m in BC and I’m getting mine done soon well same time as c section and always my dr says they don’t tie anymore they fully remove

Period cramps are more severe after hving it done

I got mine removed and was only in the hospital for a few hours afterwards. Super easy recovery since the incisions were so tiny. Best decision I’ve made :ok_hand:

I had mine cut, tied and burned when I had my son. My periods are heavier on the 1st 2 days but are a lot shorter and more regular now. I didnt take any meds other than some over the counter stuff. I was taking care of my son as soon as I came home.

I had a tubal ligation at 23 after my second baby. I KNEW I WAS DONE. So my best advice is make sure your for sure done. My whole family was mad because i was sooo young. The procedure was so easy i was in anf out within like 4 hours. Only had pain for the first 3 days after that i could move around and stuff. By 2 weeks i could lift and do all the normal things. My periods are literally so normal. They come at the same time every month. I have no issues and its been 3 years now. I don’t regret my decision one bit.

I had my surgery feb 16th. I was hurting for like a week. Had some bleeding. When I first woke up I was in a lot of pain because the gas the pumped my stomach with went up to my shoulder and chest. But the more you move around it’ll go away. 30 mins after waking up I got up and dressed myself by myself. Bring a pillow to hold to your stomach for the ride home.
