Questions about babies born on methadone?

My sister will be giving birth to her baby in May. She has been and will be on methadone throughout her entire pregnancy. She goes to a clinic and is under strict doctors’ care. She will also breastfeed afterward. Questions are- Has anyone had PERSONAL experiences with METHADONE babies (not any other types of drugs). I’m only asking about methadone. How is the baby at birth, and how are they now?

My sister was a healthy baby my mom used methadone during pregnancy and breastfeeding … she is 30 now …

My friend had a baby that was born with that in her system. And let me tell you it was horrible. She went into withdrawls and it was sad. How anyone could put a baby through that is beyond me. Little girl still has problems and she’s 3

My nephew was born addicted to methadone. He went thru a week of detox in the hospital and has behavior problems now. He is 7.

Smh I don’t know why doctors think that’s ok. Baby will have serious withdrawals. And who know what kind of long term effects it will cause to baby.

The baby will be born addicted to methadone just like mom. There will be withdrawal sometime.

There is no way to say, her dosage will have a factor. The side effects are from mild to severe. Could be noticable right away or down the line. My heart aches :broken_heart: for that baby. Best of wishes.

Baby’s born addicted, baby goes through the effects of withdrawal.

Cousins baby was born while she was on methadone. Withdrawal and he had some behavior issues growing up but is fine now age 15

There will be a big withdrawal period they usually let them detox on their own as to not put more drugs into the babies system. Lots of holding and cuddles for the baby as that is all that soothes them. Went through it with my almost 1 year old grandson and he is doing great now

I have experienced this professionally. The baby can go through withdrawal, restlessness, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever. The WD symptoms can last several weeks and may appear anywhere from a few days after birth up to a few weeks. This does not mean the baby is addicted. It will subside. Breastfeeding is still recommended while on methadone maintenance as long as the pediatrician and OB agree.

I knew a baby born to a mom on methadone. Baby was fine. I want to say she stayed in the hospital a few days for mild withdrawals but she was home within a week. Shes a healthy child now.

Hi
I was born a methadone baby.
They allowed my mum to breastfeed in order to wean me off methadone.
I as easily agitated and didn’t sleep well for the first few days however with love, care and the right support my mum was able to pull me through it.
If they believe breastfeeding isn’t doing it they will choose to use morphine in order to help the baby but only with the parents permission.

Please do your best to support your sister through this too as she will feel horrible seeing how her baby may be once born.

I have a high tolerance to pain medication now.
For example I had to have surgery for kidney issues last year and I was on IV morphine and pethidine they had to give me the dose that they would give the average adult male as it wouldn’t work for me otherwise.
I was also weaned off both with tramadol too.
I was also raised to be careful about medications, alcohol and other addictive substances just in case i am more susceptible to addiction which many doctors and specialists believe is the case because of already being addicted when born so I that part of my brain is “active”

I was on Suboxone with my youngest son been off it 7 months now . They keep you in hospital for a few extra days to see if baby has withdrawals. Symptoms are dragging feet, restlessness unsettled. I luckily had no problems with my son. No withdrawals whatsoever but I was on 0.2mg which is low. Treatment for drug/opiate replacement therapy for newborns is low doses of morphine. Then wean off morphine. Suboxone and methadone are chemically different but more or less the same. , Suboxone has Naloxone in it. really they should have lowered the dose. If it WASN’T safe to have in pregnancy they WOULDN’T give it to pregnant mothers. And you ladies assuming that baby will be addicted, you’re wrong! Not every baby born on O.R.T is addicted. People who have no experience with addiction and recovery really need to learn! My 4yo son is perfect now.

Seen this personally while doing nursing rotations. The baby was born jaundice and having withdrawal symptoms. He needed to stay under the light and was not allowed to pick him up because of the withdrawal was severe for this one baby. He was born early. The nurses in the unit was scared he would not make it due to the combination and difficult birth.
The boy is around 7 years old now and to the best of my knowledge, is healthy!!

I can’t believe the third doctors out there that would let her breastfeed that child wow she is on that crap. There are other over-the-counter medications but you can’t take when you’re breastfeeding. I’m sorry but we need to crack down on this methadone crap

Yes I was on methodoyne while pregnant. I live in the UK. I didn’t have a care plan no support. When I got pregnant I was self managing cutting down by 2.5-5ml a week. When I got pregnant I was on 30ml. No one told me it’s the most dangerous time to detox an most painful. Detox while pregnant was more painful than heroine detox an meth detox put together. I decided myself 0.5 ml detox a week. By time I was 8 half months pregnant I was off methodoyne. Breastfeeding is definitely best. I’ve heard babies screaming detoxing an mum hasn’t connected. I think she will do amazing with your love and help. If she is on methodoyne she needs to 100% breastfeed too make the detox stage bearable for baby an mummy. No one wants to be in that position it is what it is though. Breastfeeding is best. Baby has grown with meth in babies system too make baby withdraw without bonding an mummies milk why would you. It’s a fresh start new beginnings xx

The baby will most likely stay in the hospital longer than usual they usually have the baby born at Jersey Shore. Some babies have no withdrawal symptoms and some have mild some a little more and are given a very small amount of methadone and weaned off if they are going through to much. The Drs and nurse are very good there and make sure the baby is well taken care of. I don’t believe methadone is passed through breast milk. Mommy and baby will be fine

Baby will be born addicted to methadone and have serious and often times fatal withdrawals. Screaming, shaking, a lot of times unable to eat, fevers, and not a lot of sleep. Your sister is a selfish asshole. WOW.

Not a doctor, but have worked on wards where mothers with drug problems interfere with their own child’s welfare. Ask your friend nicely to consider this, maybe try to cut down the drug use. Is the birth of a new little one not incentive enough ?

That same thing will happen to the baby as the mother. If they don’t have their daily dose they’ll get sick(hanging out) if they do they’ll be fine. They’ll be weaned off it and there’s no long term side effects (that I have seen in the numerous kids I’ve seen being born with a methadone addicted parent.) Yes it is addictive, any good doctor will tell you that honestly, that’s why you get sick if you don’t dose. It is supposed to be a 12 month program but I’ve known people on methadone for 20 years. Depends how serious she is about getting/staying clean. Support her through this as she’s actually doing what’s best for bubs here.

I av special guardianship of a little boy who is now 7 ,he came to me at 5 days old straight from hospital his birth mother ad taken methadone through out the pregnancy, he ad a special drugs midwife who told me his first night at home wil be realy bad but to be honest it wasn’t, he was getting breast fed from birth mother but she wasn’t turning up to feed him so was decided to go cold turkey an bottle feed him ,the side affects was him gouging at his little face wen he was wanting his fix ,his bottom was very badly blistered his eye was closed with infection and he was avin a kind of fit once in a while ,but he got through it and now is a very healthy loved little boy x

I’m just wondering if any of the people making cruel and derogatory remarks actually know this person’s sister?? You don’t know this girls background, you don’t know anything about her journey. So how about not judging. Nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes. This person just wanted advice so they could best support their sister through this tough situation.

Me, I have huge health problems as a result of my mother’s drug problems. But she also did combine it with actual meth so there’s that

An old friend was on it during her pregnancy her baby came early was very very sick had bad withdrawal symptoms cried alot. Social services/cps had to see her n baby in the hospital n after as well.

STIGMA STIGMA !!!SICKNENING ,WHAT MOTHER “DISEASE FREE “ thinks I’m gonna get pregnant and be on methodone so my unborn baby can have some too! Smfh, the girl got help ,:clap::clap:although methodone does not work the brain to help reverse being an addict, but I do know there won’t b the crap of “car fentenal “ or any of those other deadly drugs, give the girl a bravo for caring enough for her unborn child by going and getting help, supervised help, after baby’s fine maybe just maybe that baby was the miracle that saved the diseased mother!!! :innocent:angels /babies

This post has sickened me …she should of never got pregnant in the first place being an addict…shame on her…and she doesn’t deserve a baby …poor little thing !!

I’ve seen it professionally. These days they watch bub very closely and when signs of withdrawal are evident medications can be given to help bub. Breastfeeding is a very good idea, as is lots and lots of skin to skin cuddles x

I was a foster momma to two kiddos born to a mom on methadone. One was autistic. High functioning. ADHD but the sweetest kid. His sister was hyper but very sweet. We got them at 4 and 2 and had them until 7 and 5. They are in an adoptive home and doing well.

Wish your sister all the best and her baby and that this baby leads her to full recovery :pray::pray::pray:

So sad my son was in the hospital years ago 4 wheeler accident. Those babies go thru so much… prayers

I have seen moms on methadone for legal prescription meds & illegal street drugs. BAbies do withdraw but some are ok in 5 days no meds & some takes weeks on morphine some needs phenobarbital added n a rare few leave nicu to go to pain management in patient centers. I dont judge because i have low tolerance to pain & insomnia & i can see how easy it is to need meds & become addicted. Everyones will power is different. These babies do suffer but are blessings nontheless. Some are placed in foster care & most go home with follow up visits. As a nicu nurse it can be veryyy challenging but lets remember the goal is a healthy baby & reuniting the family.

Sad for the baby and the life long problems the kid will have and for Mum To be taking any Drugs alcohol anything that can harm baby’s Pregnancy can be avoided a shame she wasn’t using birth control while using drugs

Two woman I know havesupervised access to there young babies as a selfish result of them using drugs during there pregnancy’s sadly

I don’t believe she asks for judgment, at least the mom is making the effort to get clean for her baby. That in itself is huge.

My nephew(son) who I have custody of was born with methadone an opioid in him, life is pure hell at times…he is 4 now an we are having to get him help ( without meds) because his aggression an anger is terrible, his pediatrician says it can get worse the older he gets due to the drugs :frowning: some days hes golden others is a true struggle but every situation can be different! I’ve worked with a lot of women who have switched from heroin to methadone during the course of their pregnancy and breastfed afterwards and I’ve seen huge success in it and as long as they don’t relapse back into heroin that way the baby and the mom can be weaned off the drug slowly and they don’t have to experience withdrawal

During nursing school clinical i saw several babies born to mothers on methadone. It’s extremely sad and heartbreaking. They shake and cry. They have to be given morphine and the drug and ween them off. If your sister can get off of that that would be what is best for her baby. It’s a heartbreaking sight to see. :disappointed:

The baby will go thru a withdrawal and cry and fuss alot sometimes not wanting to eat try and get her off before delivery

My cousin was born addicted to methadone, his mother was in a clinic & was also getting methadone off the street, he had severe withdrawals, was in the NICU for 3 weeks & has had anxiety his entire life. It is not an easy way to come into this world. The first thing that baby experienced was pain, his little arms & legs would shake & he would just scream. Payers that your sisters child doesn’t have to go through anything like what this baby did. It is terrible.

I have. Message me. As long as she isn’t using any of drugs, the baby will be fine. Most babies come
Home within two weeks. My son is 15 months and healthy as can be. The baby will not be in withdrawal, it is neonatal abstinence syndrome. If the baby has levels above a certain number, they may use lose doses of morphine but this is not necessary for every baby born on methadone.
Congrats on your sisters recovery. I wish the stigma for medication assistance treatment wouldn’t be so negative! It is actually the safest route for pregnant women who are getting clean.

I have costudy of 3 kids, one born addicted to drugs , and one to methadone, same out come, both needed to be weened off, I’m sorry but it will be one of the hardest things to watch, and deal with, prayers for all.

The best recommendation I can give is get her off of methadone and on subutex. This is from experience with being in the NICU. Subutex has much less effects and the babies do not go through nearly what they do with methadone. Some end up there for months suffering from methadone. They will score the baby according to a scale they’ve made up and give medication according to the scores. This is a very difficult thing for the babies to endure and they need lots of love and attention during this time. To the person who asked why will she be breastfeeding…such a small amount transfers through the milk that it won’t cause further harm but will help the baby bond and be comforted.

She NEEDS to get off of methadone for the sake of that poor baby.

Honestly it’s going to be pure hell for her and the baby. That poor baby is going to go through withdrawal, it will cry most of the day and night. She won’t get any sleep and CPS will most likely be in and out of her home for a while.

I, personally, was on methadone with my first pregnancy.
My doctor kept me on a very low dose, and in my 3rd semester, he saw me once a week.
I breastfed to help wean my daughter off.
She had ZERO withdrawl symptoms.

She has PLENTY of time to get off of it and not even have to deal with a withdrawaling baby, and that would be the safest bet for everyone

My mom was taking methadone when she had my brother. She worked really hard to lower her dose as much as possible without causing him harm. She didn’t breastfeed and he didn’t experience any type of withdrawal. Cps did come do a home walk through to make sure everything was okay at home. Hes 14 now and one of the sweetest, happiest, and smartest kids I know. Hes never had any problems.

If she is going to a clinic and following the dr’s order then that’s what is best for her and baby! She can’t just get off of it now that she’s pregnant. The withdrawals can cause pregnancy loss, they are so severe. It is extremely sad for babies born with a methadone addiction… But her doctors know how to deal with that!

Well if under dr care she wont get in trouble. but the baby will most definitely withdraw

And the amount of methadone in breast milk is so minimal. It doesn’t affect the child like most people think it does. It is the best route, as it can help if the baby suffers from NAS. Once you are on something and you find out you are pregnant, you can not get off that drug, specifically speaking about heroin or other opiates. It was cause the baby to die!

I know someone who’s baby had sever withdrawals from methadone, but you know what? Her baby was born alive, healthy and with a sober mom. Parents do what they have to do to be the best parent they can be.
Also methadone is prescribed. It’s not some street drug people take, it’s a way to help addicts get the recovery they need: y’all need to educate yourself and stop judging

My sister took methadone while she was pregnant and she was monitored closely by her doctor my niece was born with withdrawals and she was given morphine and she was weened off it within a week and she and my sister are perfectly fine. My sister wasn’t able to breastfeed because she was still taking the methadone after she gave birth and cps was not involved because she wasn’t using off the streets and she was doing her counseling and whatever else was asked of her from the methadone clinic and her doctor.

I know someone who was on it who lowered their dose as much as possible and gave birth to a healthy baby.

Its gonna be hell… Addicted babies go through pure hell. Baby will shake and cry constantly. Theyll need to be in nicu and they’ll be going through withdrawals. Your sister will have to step her game up as a mother from the get go

I’ve had experience with caring for 2 babies born on methadone. The babies were both perfect and had almost zero signs of it. They both went through withdrawls but they had phenomenal care through that process. They are much, much safer on methadone than they would be if they were detoxing in utero without care.

A close friend of mine was on methadone throughout her pregnancy and breastfed for over a year while still on it. Her daughter is healthy, normal, and has a mom that loves her enough to stay on the methadone to keep her from relapse. Trust that the doctors have her and her baby’s best interests in mind, be there for her to support her, not judge her.

Why are there so many negative Nancy’s on here for fuck sake!!! She has obviously stopped the drugs for her baby but for her own health she needs medication coz we all know going cold turkey can kill you and in essence could kill baby too so she doing what she can leave her the fuck alone!!! By the time baby is born she will probably be off methadone or lower dose and baby will also be weaned my partners cousin was born addictive to heroine and that’s a lot worse then methadone… good on your sister for see g she needs help for the sake of her baby xx

IMOe its just trading heroin for methadone. The baby will be born dependent upon methadone.

The mother is fighting a tough disease she didn’t get addicted overnight, by herself. Therefore, she will need professional help and support to overcome her addiction. Tough love is the worst thing she needs right now. She needs the love of her family to support her emotionally.

I’ve seen it from both sides, mom and healthcare professional. Feel free to PM me, no judgment.

I would think if shes breastfeeding the baby wouldnt have withdrawals as bad as if she didnt and I’m sure her drs have advised her on everything she should expect

I worked with dcfs clients at a heroin treatment facility. After 4 years experience there I would suggest NOT changing to anything other than methadone. She will likely have to increase her dosage to prevent withdrawal which is 100% normal and should not have shame attached to it. I would also say she needs to be prepared for the fact that DCFS will be contacted, as is a requirement whenever any child is born with substances in their system. This is NOT a bad thing- they can offer sooo much support and oftentimes cases are closed rather quickly if the mother proves continues illicit substance free and a positive support system.

Some people that comment are just ignorant-- do not mind those people. Methadone is a very strong medication and without weaning down as far as she can go without having withdrawals, then the baby will go through withdrawals him/herself. However, subutex is very much recommended by a lot of addiction specialist doctors. And most babies are born with zero withdrawals and zero side effects, ect as long as mom is responsible and does what is needed to stay clean. I suggest talking to that doctor or a suboxone doctor to see if it is okay to switch. It will be an adjustment for mom, but it gives the baby and better chance at coming out “normal”.
… for those of you that think shes so awful and such a bad person, I would say that methadone is better than being super pregnant with a needle in her arm, nodding out, and her wishing she was dead. People use methadone to relearn how to live happily, combine it with therapy, and their success rate of remaining clean after getting off it goes up exponentially. All those medications are for an addict trying to find a new way of life. If you’ve Never had or understand addiction, why comment nasty things. I read these comments all the time and think this is why people do not reach out. This is why people would rather commit suicide and suffer in silence. Shame on those of you who always have negative things to say.

Havent had anything wrong that would be from the methadone

They are detoxed in the hospital before anyone is allowed to take them home. They are kept in a quiet room to keep the extra stimulation down, watched carefully and nested in like a small dock a tot to make them feel secure. It’s sad but they are clean before discharge.

A lot of the HELPFUL comments above should be acknowledged but for all of those judging, let me tell you a story;

I did a nursing placement in a CADS (Community Alcohol and Drugs Service) team and I saw a lot of different people from a lot of different walks of life.

The one patient that will stay with me forever was a woman who had been kidnapped as a teenager, hooked on drugs and prostituted out in London for YEARS.

For YEARS she was tied to a bed, fed, watered and injected with drugs until she inevitably fell pregnant. She knew her body was changing, knew the signs and despite being tortured, raped, abused and drugged she concocted a plan to escape. She got out and she fled.

She went to the hospital immediately and was given a very strict regime to follow for methadone and her baby was born.

When I spoke to her, her baby was 11 weeks old and thriving. Yes, things were difficult, yes she was still on methadone, yes both her and her baby had to be weaned off the substance, BUT THEY LIVED.

You have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what other people have lived through. No idea at all. Do not judge, do not scorn, just be kind. It’s that simple.

I wish the mother, baby and the original poster all the best, listen to the health professionals, despite what others say, they are trying to help.

Be kind. Always.

Merry Christmas.

I’ve had 2. Both had symptoms of NAS after birth and were weaned off the medication. Both are usual ornery, defiant, spunky little girls.

As heartless as some of the comments have sounded, it’s going to be bad for mother and baby. I seen someone mention withdrawals and possible CPS involvement and it’s 100% right however, as long as she stays on the clean and clear path things should work out in the end as long as her doctors are 100% involved in her AND babies drug recovery.

To the negative Nancy’s, if she were to quit when she found out or even now, her and baby would probably be dead. Withdraw of any drug is traumatizing to the body of both mother and child.

And I know 100% it’s safer to only do X dose as approved by a doctor until that baby is out and they can be weaned off together especially if she’s going to BF than it would be to quit cold turkey, doing that is a death sentence to potentially both

She needs to be upfront with her prenatal and delivery drs bc they can help the baby with withdrawals!!! Its not an easy process as an adult I couldn’t imagine as a baby!!! I know someone who was going to the clinic and took it her entire pregnancy and when the baby was born they kept the baby for 2 weeks and slowly weaned the baby down using a different narcotic!!!

If a DOCTOR PRESCRIBES it, obviously it’s okay to do… is taking insulin daily for diabetes awful too?! Geeze. If she was buying it from the streets, then yeah there would be CPS issues. But she is taking the RIGHT steps to ensure her baby and herself will be perfectly fine.

There are people who get methadone prescribed to them for their pain, as well! There are so many ignorant people in this world that should really read a book, or at least ask Alexa (lol) information about it!

My question is how has dcs not gotten involved? Maybe it’s different from state to state but in Tennessee they drug test you every doctors appointment and they drug test the baby as soon they’re born. If the baby is born with any drugs in their system the mother is put in jail and I’m pretty sure the child becomes property of the state. It might not be like this with every state TN is just rly high with babies being born addicted to drugs and opioids.

“She goes to a clinic and is under sctrict doctor’s care”
My only questions are 1)does the doctors know she is pregnant and 2)they are giving her this knowing she is pregnant?
If you have answered yes to the first question, then why are you judging her? I am 1000% sure you are not 100%perfect in every aspect of your life. If she is under a strict doctors care and is around 5 minths pregnant I am sure they are giving her this medications knowing she is.

That poor baby… I understand that the mom is trying to detox per dr orders, and I commend her for that… but the baby will 100% suffer tremendously. It is guaranteed torture, as anyone who knows anything about withdrawal, and the baby may suffer long term effects from the drug also… nothing you can do but be supportive of her detox process and pray a lot for that baby…

Might I also add anyone on the Internet can pretend to be a dr, nurse etc etc. just bc someone says they are don’t mean they are. Please don’t take medical advice from anyone off fb. Getting off methadone could kill her baby or make her end up relapsing.

I was on suboxone and switched to subutex when I got pregnant on bc. My daughter withdrew, some don’t but I believe most do, it absolutely sucked and I still have strong feelings toward myself for what she went through and she’s about to be 4 and she’s perfect, beautiful, healthy And very smart! I have been sober almost 5 years now and we have built a life that for a long long time I didn’t even believe was in the cards for me anymore and both my kids are happy, well rounded girls. Withdraw can be rough, it can also be very mild, there’s really no telling until the baby is born and you see how it affects them but it’s a short time in an otherwise long life, you get through it, support your sister as much as you can because she will need it, it’s easy to beat yourself up during. But it’s not the end of the world and I can tell you that while we were in our NICU stay not 1 but 2 mothers left their OB appt and got high in the bathroom and both mother and baby DIED! So your sister is already taking the right steps, there’s not much she can do about anything right now because if you withdraw while pregnant your body can reject the baby as well. It’s a rock and a hard place situation but I’ll tell you right now the 1 thing that won’t help is making her feel worse💯
