Thoughts on owning a pitbull with kids?

I have a beautiful girl that we got from the shelter. She had been badly abused so she is pretty neurotic. But she is the sweetest dog with such a wonderful personality. She is great with our three kids and our two other dogs. Even when she is having a meltdown, she has never tried to bite any of us.

Amazing dogs. I’d trust a pit before I trusted a chihuahua

Pit bulls are amazing with kids. My husband got ours when I was pregnant with our first baby almost 5 years ago we have an almost 3 year old now too and our dog is awesome. He’s a pocket bully pit and is an older brother to our boys. Pitbulls are mean if you train them to be

My pit was amazing with my daughter and our cat. They used to be known as nanny dogs cause they are great with kids. No one was allowed near my daughter unless Rocki was ok with it. She was her best friend.

Maybe if you get a professional trainer and you expose them to everything. Get them trained as a support animal. The certificate is no joke. If they can’t pass, maybe they aren’t a good fit. Not saying it won’t cost time and money to find that out, but… we’re talking about your child’s safety.

I have a pitbull/ rottweiler mix that I’ve had since she was 10weeks old. My daughter was born when she was about 6. She’s 8 now and they are best friends! It’s all about positive reinforcement and if you are nervous, trainers are a huge help!

It is nature vs. nurture! Pit bulls are not an inherently bad breed of dog but hideous human beings have used them for disgraceful purposes. Treat and train your dog correctly and they will be a valued member of your family.

Pitties are the best doggos when they’re trained correctly. Fun fact, in the Victorian days they used pit bulls as babysitters for kids lol. They’re truly really great dogs. I’ve had 2 and I wouldn’t of traded them for the world. One of them was a rescue and he needed a lot more love but he was still such an amazing dog. He was protective of my kids, well really all kids. Definitely introduced the cat and such and make sure that’s gonna be ok with the dog you choose, but both of mine loved cats and our snakes :joy::grin::woman_shrugging:

I grew up around pits. They are my favorite breed next to husky because they are so incredibly loving and smart. The only mean one I have ever met in my life are ones who are either terrified of humans, ones who people have raised to be mean or ones who have been rescued from fighting and have never had an ounce of human love showed to them.
As long as your little one is taught to be respectful (because every animal has their boundaries/limits to things they like and tolerate) it should be fine! If I could have a dog in my apartment it would be a pitty. And I have 2 little girls, 4&1 myself!

Its all how you raise them…I have 3 pits and my grandson. Comes around them …if they grow up together they will be buddies… And im sure the dog will be a protector

Meh it’s a 50/50 chance, some Pitbulls will be loving dogs and die as such, but some will just snap at a older age and tear your kids face off… So yeah take the 50/50 on a beautiful Pitbull or just go for something else

It’s not the breed it’s any dog. Someone I know has a small terrier that just bit her 1 year old in the face. Any breed of dog has it in them.

We love our pittie babies. They are just like humans if raised right they are beautiful nanny dogs. If you mistreat them they will act on it. Your babies and you will love that baby

If it’s still a baby go for it. It’s not the dog itself it’s how it is raised.

As long as teach your kids not to hurt the dog good and teach the dog not to hurt the kids and then you’ll be fine.

Nanny dog. Humans tend to enjoy abusing this particular breed viciously. But they are so gentle and loving with kids. Mine is so sweet.

I have an almost 2 year old, 4 cats, a 9 year old chihuahua and a 3 year old pit. My pit Kahla is legit the “nanny dog”. From day one they’ve been best friends. I’ve had her since she was about 7 weeks old…It’s all in how you raise them.

Just make sure you get it from a reputable breeder and train it properly. They are amazingly loyal dogs but you must be careful not to get a dog who is very inbred (any breed) as it can result in the dog suffering from brain abnormalities and encephalitis which can cause it to go squirrely.

It’s not the breed, it’s the trainer.

Honestly…it does depend on the type of pitbull as well. My SIL got one of those blue colored pits …razor edge gottie…as it was the sweetest dog. However, after three months, it started snapping at her two year old. Granted, the kid was a nightmare with animals as well, but the dog got snappy and she ended up giving him to a boyfriend she had at the time. I remember I dog sitted a tiger striped pitbull. Pretty dog,but boy could be stink up a house with all the bad gas he passed. My daughter loved that dog. He would lay on the couch when not running after butterflies outside. However, super muscular and kept knocking us both down to play plus was a nightmare to walk on a leash was so strong. Went to get gas one day with him in the car and an old man asked if I wanted to get rid of him. He had one that had recently passed and it had looked like that pitbull named Tyson. Owner abandoned him at our house. …by the way.I thought about it a minute, then agreed after followed the man home and saw he owned a 30 acre farm with plenty of room for Tyson to run free and Tyson loved the barn and animals in it. Was a better fit. I’m not against pitbulls, but find it harder finding one of that breed that fits into our family with no fenced in yard at moment. Have a 10 year old doxie that is lazy and perfect for us. Maybe do a trial first to see how that type of dog will fit in first before plunge in.

Any dog is going to bite if they arent raised correctly. Ive got a house full of “scary pitbulls” that ive had around my children since they were all babies. We also had a 1 year old chihuahua that we rescued… until she bit the end of my 8 ur old sons finger off! Its the tiny dogs who are assholes IMO!

I’ve had 4 dogs and all have been bully breeds. These dogs are amazing family dogs, do not listen to stereotypical bull about pitbulls. Like people they have personalities and behaviors that are shaped by the environment they live in and the people that raise them. Make sure you educate yourself on dog behaviors and development before owning any breed of dog.

I have 3 pitbulls, ages 6 and 3. My son is 4 years old and daughter is 3 and they all get along perfectly fine. Pitbulls are thee best breed of dog :rosette:
