What is a cervical cerclage?

Today I had my 20 week scan and my cervix isnā€™t cooperating, so I need to have a ā€˜cervical cerclageā€™ tomorrow, just wondering if any other mums have had this done and what to expect and how it may affect my pregnancy? Of course my doctor will tell me more, just want personal opinions, Thankyou

Its unfortunate but itā€™s really great that they caught it! I havenā€™t had one personally but Iā€™ve assisted in the placement and removal of cerclages as a surgical tech. I worked in L&D for a few years.

All of my patients were asleep for the procedure. You may experience some cramping and spotting afterwards, cervixes are easily angered lol, but there shouldnā€™t be any major bleeding. And youā€™ll have to have it removed prior to delivery. They usually remove them around 36 weeks. Itā€™s just some heavy sutures to keep the cervix closed until itā€™s safe to deliver. So removal of the cerclage is quick and easy.

I had it done. The procedure itself is relatively uneventful, I actually fell asleep and had no problems afterwards. You will be expected to take it easy during the pregnancy, possibly be put on bed rest as the stitches could come loose. I was carrying twins so I only made it to 27 weeks, but that is longer than if I had not had the cerclage.

I had one done at 11 weeks and few days it was an emergency so my doc couldnā€™t wait til I was 12 weeks. Just some cramping afterwards and some spotting. Iā€™m currently going for 23 weeks this coming Saturday. Ull have to rest for about a week before u can go back to ur normal routine.

Iā€™m having my second one done today actually, Iā€™m 14 weeks tomorrow. I had one done with my 2nd pregnancy also itā€™s a very simple easy procedure they normally take it out around 36 weeks and it prevents your cervix from dilating more. You canā€™t have sex, swim, bathe ect with it in tho
