What should I pack in my hospital bag?

I am pregnant with my first baby, and I’m about 32 weeks pregnant. I’ve been thinking about beginning to pack my hospital bag for when I give birth. What should I pack in the hospital bag? What all do I need for afterbirth?

Baby outfit, some pjs , a couple blankets…for u, your toiletries, some snacks ,clothes,Charger, chap stick, wipes!

For yourself: clothes to wear home or to lounge in at the hospital i suggest dark pants. Hair ties, chap stick, phone charger. For baby: a few outfits, picture outfit/going home outfit, a blanket or 2 but just a warning they will spit up and pee on them and possibly some wet wipes (the pink ones they provide are annoying to use for the first poop, get unscented though)

Nappies, petroleum jelly, cotton wool pads for baby, muslin cloths, vests and sleep suits for baby, a peri bottle, nightdress, plus, snacks, maternity pads, coming home outfit for yourself and the baby,

Face mask sheets for when you are in labour, they were a god send for me! They make you feel so nice and cool as the room is so hot!

Hair ties, chapstick are a must!

Change for vending machines

Ask the hospital that your delivering at what they provide for you. Our hospital provided all wipes, diapers, single use formula (if needed/ wanted) blankets, aftercare products for mom and toiletries for mom. They also provided a take home bag with all the items for the baby to make sure you were set.

For my 3 kids I packed a couple of velcro swaddles, take home outfit, a couple of loose fitting comfy outfits for myself, my own toiletries, always disposable underwear, snacks, hair ties, hand cream, chapstick.

Some add ins - gum, chapstick, lotion, and something for your feet to walk around in.

Depends! They are a game changer. I recommend them to every new mama
I know!

My bag didn’t get packed until early labor and my husband picked it, comfy clothes to go home in, clothes for the baby. lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair tie, brush, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, chargers for phones, and tablets, and a pillow

Big huge comfortable pants hun lots of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, comfortable clothes to leave hospital in for you nothing tight as you will spend the 1st whole car ride home leaning over to check baba, couple of pairs pj’s/night gowns, 2 outfits for baby + vests + socks, baby hats, bottle strealised just incase you have problems breastfeeding & ready made formula, blanket, muslin square, wipes, nappies, teeny nail scissors (my boy came out like Edward flipping scissor hands) maybe a small sudacream for babas bottom. At the moment the hospital want you both happy healthy and home hun where your safer so you probably wont need all that, I didnt use 1/2 of what I took, I was out within 10 hours of giving birth xxx

Loose pajamas, CHARGER (lol) , an couple of outfits for the baby. Chapstick, some snacks you like, book or puzzle book if you like those things, hair care items, (brush, hair ties, etc). Loose clothing to wear home.

****Vaseline tubes. No one told me until my 3rd that if you squirt a bit into the babies first diapers (clean ones during changings), it’s so much easier to get the first poops, (meconium) off the baby’s behind. ***

Good luck, mama!!

I didn’t have a hospital bag bc my son was preemie and I ended up having an emergency c-section. I can tell you I definitely recommend getting it ready now.

Honestly call the hospital you plan on giving birth at ask what they provide first.
I packed a small toiletries bag( chapstick, hair ties, body wash, loofa, shampoo or dry shampoo, conditioner, face wash and lotion , hand lotion and deodorant). I also packed a robe and birthing gown( depends on hospital). A comfortable set of clothes to wear and go home in. I took nursing tanks and warm cardigan.
With leggings/ sweat pants.
Baby bag: Two outfits one new born size and one 0-3 months. (I picked ones with attached feet and hand mitts so I didn’t have to worry about packing those.).Sleep sack or swaddle. Hats. I also took a cloth bag for dirty clothes.
Breast pads if you plan on nursing. I honestly don’t know if my hospital provided them or not.
My phone charger with long cord.

An extension cord came in handy

Razors, shampoo and conditioner, soap, your favorite face stuff, your favorite pajamas. Personally those things or the things that made me feel pretty clean and comfortable after I had my kids

The one thing, of all things I packed, that I wish I took, was my own shower stuff. They give you sample sized bottles and you never know how long you’ll be there.

Oh toothpaste, ChapStick, and your phone charger

For baby: Pajamas, onesies, hats, socks.
And clothes for yourself to change and feel comfortable! Toothpaste and toothbrush and a hair brush.
You honestly don’t need much.

Robe and house shoes, your own pads, yes definitely lip balm

Tip is to put each baby outfit in a ziplock bag labelled (first outfit) etc incase it’s a quick rush to grab bits then you can always put the dirty outfits back in the bag after. I know if I said to my other half grab me a babygrow he wouldn’t have a clue so was easier to say grab me the first outfit bag xx

Best advice I was ever given was snacks for after delivery!!! I promise you will be STARVING after delivery lol. Pajamas, ponytail holders, phone charger, chapstick, heavy duty pads. For baby: outfit for hospital pictures, coming home outfit, socks.

I took comfy clothes to change into and wear. Phone and chargers. Brought some cards to play while in labor. I was In labor for 14 hours. And then bath stuff and toothbrush and toothpaste. I was lucky and had some taco salad brought to me in the hospital stay(next day after giving birth). So we got to eat on that! A few outfits and a blanket for our baby but everything else was provided!

All hygiene products, Bathing products. Ur own towel bc the hospitals usually suck. A extra pillow. Then 3 comfortable pairs of clothes. If you r breastfeeding a breastfeeding bra. Socks or house shoes. And just some small snacks so u and S/O don’t have to constantly leave to get them. And for baby bag 2-3 outfits a swaddler and a blanket or 2. Hospital will have everything else :purple_heart:

Slippers. A big towel. Your own toiletries. Hair ties. Chapstick. Long charger. Comfy pajamas- button down if you plan to breastfeed. Going home outfits for both you and baby- pack 2 for baby.

Get both of these or something similar, I had my last baby August 31st and I’m still using these. The gown is great, it opens easy for nursing and buttons down the back making it easy for doctor exams while you’re in the hospital. It looks pretty and it’ll make you feel more human faster. Order both in your prepregnancy size, they run kind of big. Also get yourself an extra long phone charger and a comfortable pillow/blanket. I didn’t really need anything else.

All toiletry items, maternity pads, clothes. Phone charger,
Clothes for bub, formula if you’re not breastfeeding, slippers and robe,

Definitely adult diapers for pp bleeding. Trust me you won’t care about it at all

Sandals for the shower!!

These are all great suggestions

I ended up not being able to take my bag.

The hospital provided me with EVERYTHING I needed, toiletries, towels, extra blankets, pillows, hospital gown. I asked it was received. And I was grateful to have their stuff when things got “messy” which they most certainly did.

Moral of the story, take your chargers and everything else you need (or forget to pack) can be provided for you. So don’t stress too much.

Honestly, I packed a huge backpack and duffle bag full of everything under the sun. Then I never even opened the bags since I was only at my Midwife’s house for a couple of hours and went home.

I haven’t read all the comments so not sure if you already have these suggestions.
Lip balm. A pen and note pad.
A hair elastic FOR YOUR WRIST if breast feeding. there is always someone coming in to ask you how long he fed for and which boob did you start first. I found putting a hair elastic on the wrist that I started feeding from helped me remember when in a sleepless fog of exhaustion.
If you plan to swaddle/wrap your baby bring in a couple of the wraps you will be using as they are all different shapes and sizes and those expert midwives are great at teaching you how to do it well with the ones you’ll be using at home. All the best. Congratulations. Enjoy the ride.

What I wish I had known when I packed? That there was a chance that I would be there for 5 days!! Pack cozy clothes and plenty of them! House shoes and/or flip flops. Do NOT pack diapers, the hospital will provide plenty.

Depends are something I was told about. You feel silly buying them, but they make life easier. And now at Target, Frida mom has an after birth kit for moms to be with everything to help with your healing afterwards.

I packed so much and used none of it. I do think though you should pack overnight pads and “granny” panties. I brought a bathrobe and didn’t even use it. A few things for the baby especially a going home outfit. Everything i brought was way too big for him. In the hospital they provided the diapers and formula for us. Phone charger for sure.

This is what I packed for both my deliveries and I used it all. Cozy robe, slippers, shower flip flops, baby’s going home outfit (2 sizes), phone, charger, earphones (i listened to music while waiting to dilate), your going home clothes and shoes. Vitamins if you take any, face wash, toothbrush and toothpaste, lotion and or face cream. Depends underwear, if you wanna go that route. And if your partner will be with you a toothbrush, toothpaste and extra underwear, socks and neck pillow…im sure missed some things but others may fill in

A bottle of water for down below cause after when you wee youll know why. Loose clothing in case you have a section id pack nighties and pj bottoms as you may not be comfortable in pj bottoms. Lots of muslin cloths and vests and baby grows. Pack one bag for overnight and an emergency one in case you have to stay in longer xx

Warm socks, hair ties, chapstick, comfy pjs, baggy pants to wear home. All you need for baby is an outfit to wear home and a blanket. If it’s cold where you live make sure to bring layers for baby and a hat/mittens

Not much honestly - especially if you live nearby and spouse can run home if needed - some basic toiletries like chapstick, water bottle, toothbrush/toothpaste, ponytails, face wipes or wash, if you prefer your own shampoo etc., comfy outfit for you to wear home and/or around the hospital, slippers to wear walking around, an outfit or two for baby if you want pictures and for going home. Phone charger and any convenience items you might want (a book, a pillow, from home, etc). That’s about it for what I’ve packed (delivering next week), the hospital has all the stuff baby will need and stuff you’ll need after birth unless you prefer something specific. For spouse/partner I let my husband pack his own things which are usually just snacks and comfy clothes lol and his iPad so he can study if he needs (work stuff) and his phone charger.

Most things already listed, and FLIP FLOPS! I learned after my first that I didn’t want to walk on the room floor lol.
And the outfits with the open bottom (for baby). I called them bag outfits. Makes diaper changes super easy.

Your phone to call a friend for food!
Some books or puzzles, a portable charger and wall outlet. An outfit for the baby to come home in. Your camera. Go buy 3 sizes of leggings or jeans 1-4 sizes smaller than you are now and a new shirt (go with a size or 2 up from before preg) that makes your boobs feel good. Hair ties and a hairbrush. Makeup if your into it: not the whole kit but some favorite items.

I really liked those premade bottles for babies and the nipples that came with, those mesh panties are the comfortable uglies, maybe ask for a 2nd pair.

My labors where vastly different: but I got bored quickly

All the above Front opening pjs or nightie. You also need a Man bag. This should have food and snacks, his phone charger and separate plug, books or magazines. Pillow. Spare change for vending machine and car park ticket machine.

Don’t bother packing your skinny clothes - you will be going home in your maternity clothes… I was so disappointed to find that out lol

Comfy clothes…slippers…the hospital will have the basics for you and baby. Maybe a boppy if you are breastfeeding. Pics of other kids and family if visitors are not allowed. Chargers…

Comfy clothes for you, socks, slippers, snacks lol. Hygiene stuff for you. Outfits for baby. They mostly have things for baby.

I walked in with nothing and walked out with a baby. Just their outfit to wear home.

I brought my own breastfeeding nightgowns. They were much nicer than a hospital gown. Bathroom supplies. Going home outfit for you and baby. I brought a blanket for the baby. I recommend pillows&blanket, especially for dad lol brush. Tooth paste and tooth brush.

A comb or brush for sure! My hair was a nightmare after having my first! Hair ties or scrunchies, or even a headband, chapstick, extra long phone cord!

What I had in my bag the first time and is definitely going with me this time is slippers with hard bottoms!

Someone recommended a night gown for me incase of a c section, and dont forget hubby when packing, he’ll need comfy clothes, snacks and shower goods too. Pillow for you and hubby, and extra blanket. Babys outfit one in newborn and one in 0-3 in case hes bigger. Anything you prefer the baby to use. House shoesss and toiletries. Thats all I can think of right now. Im 34 weeks and have been asking all my mom friends

Button down pajamas if you plan on breastfeeding, makes it so easy to stay covered up and still be easily able to nurse. Your own pillow and an extra for dad.

I can not stress enough that you take your own menstrual pads & baby wipes. Also, plan on comfortable clothes & shoes. Remember, You’re not going to feel runaway ready for a few days & most likely not at pre-pregnancy clothing size for a bit. Car seat & a couple different size baby clothes.

Snacks! I actually enjoyed hospital food, but there delivery schedule was different then mine and always found i was hungry… with my second I packed healthy snacks and drinks and so I could munch on something at 3am when nursing…

I packed WAY too much! A couple pairs of clothes for the baby (newborn and maybe 0-3). Clothes for you and hubs. Slippers for the hospital floor. Shower supplies and toothbrushes.

Our lactation consultant also suggested bringing the pump you plan to use so they can help you get it started correctly and comfortably.

I wish I’d packed makeup and a brush cuz ours ended up being born on a holiday and they sent a reporter to our room to take pics and interview and I looked ragged ha ha. Only baby and dad were in the picture

I packed so much and didn’t use any of it except for the body wash and qtips. Baby clothes of different sizes definitely. Pajamas you can wear instead of the hospital gown. Hygiene products and Chapstick. Don’t forget the chapstick. My lips were so dry afterwards. I was so happy I always keep several in my bag. Lol.

Socks, pillow, robe, nursing bra, shampoo, conditioner, newborn outfit, 0-3month outfit (preferably a onesie that zips with feet), phone charger, change of clothes for you, toothpaste/brush, deodorant. That’s all you need everything else is provided and you should bring an extra bag for all the free stuff you get!!

snacks you enjoy thay are filling. i went in and hated the hospital foods, the little food I packed were a lifeline for me, specailly considering I went in at 5am and wasn’t able to have food until about 6pm that night… loose confortable clothing

Pack like your staying in a hotel!! Bring your own pillow, blanket and snacks!!! Don’t forget your own toiletries!! I even bought a few things to entertain me while the baby was sleeping!

A pair of slippers from Dollarama. Ones you can throw out after you’re done at the hospital (cause, ew, you don’t want those germs back in your house😉)

Phone charger, a comfy outfit like sweatpants to go home in, an outfit to go home in, brought my hairbrush, deodorant, baby’s going home outfit, some favorite snacks.

Don’t forget baby wipes when I had my third child they gave me some kind of dry wipes I had to wet to use! I was SO glad I brought my own!!!

Ur clothes and a few outfits for the baby is all I would pack the hospital gives u pads and the hospital gives u diapers wipes milk unless u breast feed and they even give u a blanket hat and clothes for the baby that’s all I took when I had my 3 baby’s

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, chapstick!!! And your deodorant. Comfy clothes, a comfy blanket or pillow I brought both. Boppy pillow if you plan to breastfeed & phone charger

A perri bottle, robe, nonslip socks, chapstick, chargers, a blanket, a couple changes of comfortable clothing a sweater because maturity wards are usually cold, shampoo/conditioner/body wash and hairbrush. Hair ties! Couple outfits for baby, deodorant and snacks.

For myself I put extra clothes, comfy ones. Undies, socks, and ur own pads cus there pads are really thick. Also a body shaper to slim the tummy.
For the baby just 2 pairs of outfits (to decide which one to put when born), socks, newborn diapers, And and a beenie.
Before I took the stuff u can take in the drawers like nose thing to succk up the boogers and thermometer. And the baby rag.
Every bottle he drank of milk there I kept to wash at home and re-use. They come in handy

If you are in the UK they will provide nothing for the baby only formula bottles. You have to bring all other essentials with you nappies wipes cotton balls clothes blankets etc… pack snacks and juices. Also plenty of changes of unwears and bottoms. Comfy clothes :relieved: breast pads and sanitary pads for after. Washing items and towel. Slippers or flip flops. Charger. Just had baby number 3 and hospital provided nothing safer to have all of you own just incase. Good luck xx

Your own shampoo and conditioner (hospital stuff sucks!) Slippers, robe, loose fitting clothes to come home in, personal items, highly suggest your own pillow and blanket (again… the hospitals suck lol) chargers, baby’s coming home outfit, hair brush

I literally packed the whole house. Then I used none of it. Take plenty of pjs and make sure you have your phone charger the rest of the time you will be holding your baby or sleeping

Baby milk if your not breast feeding, oh and its not cheap, they come in pre made up bottles

Lots of chonies something comfortable baby clothes in diff sizes a boppy

Bring a nice blanket and hat to wrap baby in for pictures.

If are breastfeeding I brought the breastfeeding pillow

Cotton Granny panties. Trust me you, don’t wanna wear that mesh underwear. Different size clothes for baby. Clothes you won’t mind messing up in cause you will be bleeding

the hospitals here in lreland don’t supply you whit any thing the woman here have to bring in every that they need for themselves and their babys

Following I’m 36 weeks & go in for a test Friday to see if I’ll have her sooner than later

loose clothing, snacks you enjoy (hospital food is unwilling and bland as all hell) binky, baby outfit, and extra water. (my nurses weren’t on top of my water and I didn’t like bugging them so having my own bottle was nice )

Your phone charger. You’ll want to keep in touch with all of your friends and family. And all the pictures you will take.

Nursing tank top, longer than usual phone charger, fabric headband, snacks, flip flops/crocs, hoodie or sweater (my room was always either too hot or too cold) .

Comfy clothes, loads of pads, breast pads too, slippers, snacks, book/magazine etc, clothes for baby, nappies wipes etc chargers tablet etc. X

Any lipbalm because for some unknown reason my lips were all cracked

Nightgown, nursing bra, underwear, homecoming clothes, phone, phone charger, baby blanket, homecoming baby clothes, carseat put in car and SNACKS/DRINKS

Rolls of quarters for vending machines. Snacks from home also

Sanitary napkins if you prefer the slim style. Or are larger or smaller than average.

Don’t take underwear. Ask for more and more mesh underwear from the hospital. Take some home too.

Pack a lot of snacks.Comfy slippers and music for yourself.Depending on weather, light zip up jammies and hat for baby

there are great list on Pinterest that give you ideas.

Chapstick! (Unless you’re having a planned c-section)

My own pillow was the biggest thing!!!

Comfy clothes, nice snacks, chocolate bars, powerade type drinks, phone charger, good luck

LIP BALM! Trust me

A bed jacket or shawl…feels so cozy. <3
