When should kids go to speech therapy?

At what point should you reach out for speech therapy for a freshly 2 year old? She says 5 words or less. Mostly will communicate with her own “baby” language still.

In my state (georgia) they have Babies Can’t Wait. They helped us with our kids then the school setup an IEP for them

Give her time. Shes only 2. Dont rush it. Keep talking to her…keep reading to her. She will get there. I babysat a kid who didn’t speak properly until he was almost 4…then turns out, he was super bright and wouldn’t shut up. Lol
Relax.

Now. Atleast discuss with your dr.

I would say wait another 6 months. Then bring it up to the pediatrician. If at 3, you still have concerns, request an eval. They will give you a reference.

Early intervention services are available in most states.

The way we done it was go through the child’s pediatrician.

If you’re worried about speech you can always request an evaluation through your pediatrician.

Early intervention is key. At the 2 yr check up your ped should have assessed and given you the numbers for resources. Yes 5 words is not enough for 2 yrs

My son was 2 when I addressed it with his pediatrician at his 2 yr check up dr he sent referall to Early on 6 months later we found out he needed tubes in his ears now he’s a talking machine

What does your pediatrician say about it? I would talk to them first and go from there…

I’d talk to your pediatrician. My son has been in speech since he was 10 months. He had a hearing problem. He is 18 months and just started babbling after tubes were put in. It never hurts to ask for an evaluation.

She needed testing a while ago . Good luck. I will pray for her

Discuss it with your pediatrician. We had an evaluation for something called babynet and it’s given us free help. He starts speech soon!

I would wait until 3 years old. My two girls had a major language development between age 2 and 3. And “baby” language is a good sign, that means she knows what she’s supposed to sound like.
But if she starts only grunting or pointing, that could be a bad sign. My son never said more than 10 words and started losing all resemblance of language at age 3 1/2 and turned out he has Autism. With speech therapy though and some therapy, he is back on track now. No worries! :slightly_smiling_face:

Unless they are regressing I wouldn’t worry to much. Talk to his doctor.

I live in canada, but i brought it up with my sons dr, and he started going to a speech therapy at 3 years old, and just stopped before his 5th birthday. I found between the therapy and putting him into pre school, it helped him alot.

My sons speech was pretty bad at 2 and then picked up quite a bit within a few months, but was still very garbled. His pedi kept tabs on it but the fact that he kept improving was enough for her to let it go. we read a lot and made him use his words.

He is starting kindergarten next week and will
Most likely be in speech and that’s okay. His greatly improved and will continue to do so.

My sons pediatrician referred him to speech therapy at 16 months.

You could get an eval explore options and what not. See what her understanding and comprehension are. That what we did with my youngest. She’s been in speech for almost a year now. She’s 5.

Ask your childs dr about contacting the board of education to start speech therapy

Have her ears checked sometimes they have issues with hearing sounds my niece had to have tubes put in, it made a world works of difference

At my daughter’s 1 year check up she said that kids her age should be saying atleast 100 words. I would take your little one to the pediatrician to talk to her about it

My son will be 2 in september and they said he should know at least 50words already but he doesnt so we just got referred to speech therapy

Do you have the first steps program? Where you are located. They can send someone to evaluate your child and referral if necessary.

Still way too early. Give it time she will learn at her own pace. No worries momma😊

Now. Talk to pediatrician for a referral for someone in your local school system who can help you. Our son needed help at 2 and didn’t get it until 3 1/2. It set him back and he has always been a year behind playing catch up! He is high functioning autistic also and wasnt diagnosed until 3 1/2.

Early intervention is so, so important. The earlier the better! In most places they’ll do an assessment for free. Better to find out if it’s needed sooner rather than later!

This is what my daughters pt worker gave to me that the state of Maine goes by

Reach out to your state’s early intervention program. They will evaluate for free to see if your child qualifies for free services.

I wouldnt be too concerned with the talking until about 3 yrs old. Kids develop at their own pace. Your kiddo knows a lot more words than she speaks but for whatever unknown reason they dont use the words they know. I have never met a 1 yr old that could say 100 words, that seems crazy to me (although im sure theres some out there) just be patient. Kiddo will start talking your ear off before you know it!

My son was 2 when he was referred to speech therapy. Always better to intervene early is possible!

A couple of years ago had a new 2year old come into my class not talking. I had flash cards all over my walls started out with cards with box, balls cups planes, those kind of cards was having my kids show me where each one was then we would also set down and use the same set ( I had 2 sets) and had them repete them with me by October he was saying lots of word. Dr.at 2year check up in July wanted to recheck him in 3 months thought he might be autistic. No way was he. I am old so bear with me when all of you grew up parents talked to each other, they talked on the phone and you heard words, you learned to talk from listening. So you copied you parents . Today everyone texts and babies do not hear spoken word like you all did growing up. Please try flash cards with things at home, animals, silly songs. They need to hear us speak.

She might be tongue tied. That’s what was wrong with my rayray but he has sensory issues too. But hes almost three and has been in speech 4 months and it’s done wonders he went from 5 words to a whole vocabulary!! Melted my heart when he finally said mommy

Oh goodness. Please discuss this with your pediatrician and don’t blow it off like others have suggested. If you have a concern, which I would too if it was my child, you need to get professional advice. It’s always better to get a screening; best case scenario there’s nothing wrong, worst case they need additional help which you can usually get for free from state early intervention programs. I have had concerns about my son’s speech since he was 3 and kept asking about it, but it was disregarded due to his age. Now he’s six and going into first grade, in speech therapy and having difficulty reading and writing because he doesn’t understand the different sounds that letters make due to his speech impairments.

Speak to the pediatrician.

I work in therapy :sunglasses:. I would def get a ST to do an assessment on her .

They referred my son for ST and early intervention is dragging their feet. Hes started really trying to talk without them.

Our grandson said very few words, had earring test . I would not be concerned about only 5 words- at least 5 is better than none. Now he talks and talks and talks. Just didn’t have much to say is what is papa thought.
I’d have his ears checked

Best advice: request a referral for both speech therapy and audiology… some kids are “late talkers” and some have things standing in their way. From experience even though your pediatrician may say “ears looks clear” at every check-up they don’t really have the right equipment to check, she was never sick- no ear infections, no tonsillitis… nothing. My youngest daughter didn’t have much speech by 2 and with her older sister having “cluttering” I knew I needed to intervene. Her ears were completely filled with fluid, along with enlarged adenoids this was the cause for her lack of speech. After tubes and adenoid removal in May she speaks the way a 2 year old should and progresses daily.

My twins didn’t talk until they were 5. Now my grandsons were the same say. All is fine!

Definitely look into early intervention. Try calling dfs and see what they have to offer for speech therapy.

We started at 2, it has made a huge difference.

My Dr. Recommended Early intervention for my youngest at 18months when she could only say 3-4 words.

your doctor should be referring you to early start a two year old should have at least 50 words at two. Less than that should lead to a speech and hearing evaluation. When your child is three your school district can evaluate. The earlier you get help the better for your child.

50 words is not a milestone must met for a kid that just turned 2. Its actually 5-10 at 2 so dont be making moms feel bad that their baby doesnt know how to say “at least 50 words” by tge time tgey are 2. Thats not even real. I have 4 kids and im college educated in early childhood and ive never seen a brand new 2 year old besides my niece and one of my daughters that knows 50 words and how to pronounce them perfectly. Wow.

My son didn’t talk much at 2. Only child? Doesn’t have to. By 3 he was fluent. I put him in a child care place with other children. Some were older than him. Teachers there ‘use your words’ . Wonderful place!! Could be doesn’t hear well? But if knows words think that is a plus!

Early intervention through your state is very inexpensive and may even be free depending on your income. In NJ they come to your home to do therapy which s super convenient. Five words is pretty low for 24 months. My son is 24 months and has around 150 words and still qualified for speech therapy. Good luck!
