Where is everyone getting cheap yet good quality clothes from? I need a new wardrobe
Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Shein
Try thrift stores. Also good for the environment! I’ve found silk dresses, beaded and sequined evening wear, leather coats, lined wool pants, in addition to things like jeans, khakis, sweaters, shirts, skirts, blouses and activewear all at much reduced prices. Also pocketbooks, hats, housewares. Check which day they offer additional discounts for even better deals.
Look for bigger thrift stores for the most selection. I like Salvation Army because they don’t overpay their CEO and they house, feed and employ lots of people in need. Goodwill has nice stuff but doesn’t do much in the community. We have some huge Asian thrift stores that are a treasure trove, other small ones that have a shabbier selection, but you never know where you’ll find that gem!
You can get inexpensive long gowns and have them shortened or get slightly larger clothes and have them tailored at the dry cleaners if they have a seamstress on hand for a custom fit.
There are designer thrift stores too, but a Burberry raincoat that would go for $3,000 is still pricey at $300. We have New to You and Plato’s Closet in Northern Virginia, and there’s Rent the Runway online.
If you’re a smaller size (12 or under) you’ll have the best selection because rich people grow out of their clothes too. Or have a clothing swap meet with all your friends. Or go to yard sales in expensive neighborhoods.
Be wary of Temu and Shein and anything with a weird name. They’re likely to be Chinese sweatshops employing children and may be harvesting your information.
I’ve also found some nice new things at discount prices at Burlington Coat Factory, but haven’t been there in a while. For classic, durable and well made clothes made in America, Lands End is my go-to, especially if they have a sale. Lands End also has decently priced very supportive and durable swimwear for post-baby bodies with tummy control, underwire tops, and full coverage wherever you need it (including swim leggings with skirts!), or go for the sexy bikinis. Can be really inexpensive if you get swimwear on sale. I’m very fair, and got a long-sleeved zip-front one piece fir $19. L.L. Bean clothes NEVER wear out but you pay for that, and I get tired of things after 20 years, but worth the investment for any item you’re REALLY hard on.
If you’re a larger size, I like Woman Within catalog/online. Roaman’s has sexier, less basic clothes but is more expensive.
Also, I don’t like giving money to billionaires like the Waltons (Walmart) or Jeff Bezos (Amazon). If I find something I like that says Amazon, I look for the brand and go directly to their website. And be careful about those Chinese companies as we’ll have to pay tariffs on those (sweatshop) goods.
Oh! And if you like funkier styles, try Etsy.
