I tested positive for GBS, and my doctor told me if my water broke, I had to immediately come for antibiotics, even if I wasn’t in labor. This is my first time testing positive. What happens if my water breaks but I don’t go into labor right away? Am I just stuck sitting at the hospital? I don’t even know what to prepare for now because I have other children here at home, and I can’t afford being stuck in a hospital until I finally go into labor, but I also don’t want to be induced again because the labor was so hard last time.
In your best interest to go straight in so you can get the full course of the antibiotics. I had gbs and only got 3 doses of the antibiotics i think your suppose to have 4.
My son ended up getting the infection from me and got meningitis and nearly died at 9 days old.
They just give u an iv with antibiotic if your water breaks chances are u are in labour or will be very shortly after
I had this with all 6 pregnancy they just made sure I got one dose of the antibiotics before baby was delivered
I had it with my third child and had less than a bag of antibiotics before he was born. I was terrified for the first year of his life because I read all the stuff on Google. He was fine and has never had anything wrong with him. I think it all depends.
That happens to me on my first child. My water broke but i’m not into labor. Just go to the hospital and they know what to do. They will give you an iv.
If your water breaks the baby needs to be born within 24 hours. So if you don’t naturally start contractions within the 24 hours they will most likely induce you.
My water broke and I went straight in as advised and they started my antibiotics. After two rounds, they started giving me pitocin to induce labor. That’s not always the case but just how it worked out for me. Definitely go straight to labor and delivery once your water breaks.
I tested positive as well. My water broke at 39 weeks on the dot. I was at a 3 when I got there and after 5 hours I was only dilated to a 4 so they gave me pitocin to speed up labor. I was in labor for 24 hours
I was positive for GBS but chose to be induced. The antibiotic was through IV and 2 doses, and had to be 4 hours apart. So it’s important to get to the hospital once your water breaks.
It just means that they want you to get the full dose of the antibiotics because the bacteria can be dangerous to the baby and cause issues if he/she passes through it. Just because you aren’t in full labor doesn’t mean anything. You can dialate quick or something could happen. They just want you there rather be safe than sorry. You shouldn’t be stuck in the hospital. Where i am, they do keep you a couple extra days to keep an eye on the baby.
I had it with my daughter. Water broke at 5:30 and I didn’t get to the hospital until 10:30. I labored until 1 am the next day and she was just fine.
Well if your water breaks, you definitely are going into labor so plan for that. They’ll keep you. You need to have those antibiotics
I was induced with my 2nd child on my due date because I was GBS positive. I got 3 rounds of antibiotics and my son just turned 4 years old and perfectly fine🙂
You should have been given a round of antibiotics when you got your positive test, then they will run antibiotics through an IV while you are in labor. It’s not that big of a deal and not uncommon. As long as you get the antibiotics, then you and baby should both be fine.
I had it I was induced for other reasons. Really not that bad other than it doesn’t feel good going in for like 15 minutes. They continue antibiotics every so many hours.
Yeah… I’m not one to talk, I tested positive and had my baby two days late via csection because potosin almost killed my baby.
I tested positive with my 4th child. My doctor said as soon as my contractions are consistent for 1 hour or my water broke to come right in so they could start my antibiotics. She said as long as I had at least one round it would be fine but she preferred two rounds. I ended up being enduced and they made me have 1 full bag of saline before the antibiotics then started the potocin. First round of Pitocin didn’t start labor so I had to have another bag of saline and antibiotics before the second round of Pitocin Those antibiotics burned my arm though.
I was positive with my 2nd but they didn’t know until it was time to push so she got sick and went into NICU for 6 days, I get it’s hard with other kids at home but from my experience just go straight away and if you have to stay it’s better to be safe than sorry
If your water breaks, baby must usually be born within 24 hours. If labor doesn’t start they will induce. If labor doesn’t progress they will perform a c-section. This is true of any birth, not just GBS.
I had it and they need like 8bhours at least I made 4 hours. My lil guy went to nicu later that day for breathing issues but only stayed 5 days.
I had it with my third and got the antibiotics. With my fourth I was sent home from the hospital by the shitty on call doctor. I ended up having my baby in an ambulance at my house with no antibiotics. She was thankfully completely fine.
If your water breaks, you’ll still have to go to the hospital. They’ll give you antibiotics during labor as well. I went into labor before my test came back positive, so they automatically gave me antibiotics just to be on the safe side.
If your water breaks you still have to go to the hospital, even though your not actively in labor in reduced or prevent any infection from occurring. A positive GBS is very common and not frowned upon
L&D mother baby nurse here. GBS can be dangerous to a newborn, I’ve seen many end up in NICU because of it. You need the antibiotics. Now not everyone will agree but thats my professional opinion.
I know someone who water had broke to early and they had to stitch it back close until it was time. Maybe thats what your doctor is going to do. I would get plans in place for someone to watch the kids just in case this happens.
I was GBS positive for 2 out of 3 pregnancies. Just get to the hospital and get your dosage of meds and they will most likely give you pitocin. It’s what they did for me. As long as you get the amount of antibiotics your suppose to have, baby should be fine. But they made me stay in the hospital for 2 days to make sure baby was fine and not showing a sickness.
Once your water breaks, the GBS bacteria can travel into your uterus and infect your baby. More than likely, labor will occur, but they will want to augment your labor if you don’t progress. Every hour after loss of fluid increases the chance of infection to baby.
Plan to have someone available to watch your children if your water breaks. They won’t keep you in the hospital for weeks just waiting for you to have your baby
I tested positive with my first son. They put me on antibiotics while I was in labor through IV. It’s not something I would take lightly though stuck in the hospital or not that isn’t anything to play with if you need to have those antibiotics listen to your doctor.
I was positive with my first, but he came too quick before they could start the IV. They just kept him an extra day for observation. He was okay.
I tested positive with my second baby and had to have IV antibiotics. Unfortunately they didn’t get them in in time because I have very quick labours (3 hours) so we had to stay in for observation. Luckily she was fine
I cant say I had GBS but I can only say that my water broke at 36 weeks no labor, contractions of any sort. It was a slow leak at first than gushes… went to the hospital and was told I wasnt able to go back home until he decided to come whenever that may be.
This is very dangerous/life threatening to the baby if you do not get treated when you go into labor. Generally speaking OB doctors do not recommend staying home once your water breaks. It is a direct pathway that can lead to major infection and complications. GBS is nothing to shrug off. Being positive is not as dangerous if you follow proper recommendations and treatment.
Just wondering what GBS is? If i think im correct i had this with my last last baby they just give you antibiotics once your in the hospital, i had her before i was able to get enough meds through iv before i had her she is completely fine and is 8 months old. I had to just watch her for the first couple weeks.
I tested positive for gbs with my daughter this past yr. (2nd pregnancy) my water ruptured at 10:30 pm and my bf and I left for the hospital. We left my son home with grandma. My water finally broke about 12:30 that night while in the hospital. When I got in there they hooked me up to the antibiotics. I never had any contractions. 6:30am they started inducing me and I went all day still nothing. They increased my pitocin and by 4:30pm i was more dialated and was given the epidural. I had my daughter at 7:45pm. It was long and drawn out and they didn’t let me go for 2 more days after that. Good luck.
I tested positive with baby number 3…my IV blew and I didn’t get the antibiotics in like I should of due to quick labor… there was no time to start another one…he was fine til we came home and within a few hours we were in the ER with 101 fever …spinal tap on a 3 day old and transferred to bigger hospital b/c he had meningitis… we were there for over two weeks and he could only come home with a PIC line to the heart for medication…he’s 14 now and all is good… the most worrisome time of my life…so listen to your doctor and go get those antibiotics as soon as possible…not a joking matter
I was positive with my last, got to the hospital at 7cm dilated. They put my IV antibiotics in before the Dr ever came in. By the time I made it to a room I was at 9cm. All within maybe 30 minutes of getting there, but she was fine.
I tested positive for GBS and I was told that I had to be at the hospital no later than 4cm dilated, not sure how I was supposed to know exactly when that was lol so I just went up when my contractions were 1-1.5 min apart. I was admitted & was given the antibiotics for gbs intravenously.
This was my delivery with my second. GBS+, my water broke and I had no contractions. I waited like 6 hours (doc never told me not to wait), went in and they started meds right away and hooked me up to pitocin to get contractions going
I tested positive with my first and all they do is an IV medicine and then baby gets a shot as soon as he/she is born
I was positive for my last 2 pregnancies and had to be induced for both because I needed 2 rounds of antibiotics 2 hours beforehand.
Nope they just give you them right then and there cause if your water breaks they’re gonna keep you no matter what.
I just had to have meds while I was in labor
I had it with my last pregnancy, just got iv medicine before i went into labor.
Yes, if you show any signs of being in labor call and go in immediately, if they try to turn you away make sure to tell them you are GBS+ and need 4 hours of IV antibiotics. I tested positive with both of my boys, my first was induced so it was no big deal but my doctor sent me home with my second and I didn’t make it back in time for my full round of antibiotics
GBS can and will turn bad very quickly, it’s not at all worth any risk to not have antibiotics. If your waters break and labour doesn’t start within a day they will put you on something to bring it on anyway.
I didn’t make it in in time to start the meds with my 3rd baby. I started the meds in the last hour of my labor and everything was just fine. They just kept me an extra day to monitor baby. He’s healthy and thriving
I had gbs with my first and didn’t make it in time to even have the meds I got to the hospital at 9.5 cm dilated. My son had some issues but grew out of them all. It was a rough first year for sure but it will all be ok mam
