Hubby & I want a dog now that our little girl is starting to walk and all that fun stuff. She loves our friends dogs so we want to get her one of her own. I never had a dog in my life, so what kind of dogs do you recommend for children? We currently don’t have any pets so we don’t need to worry about it getting along with any other animals.

We have a dachshund and she has been the best for our kids. We have had her since our oldest was 1 and she is 10 now.

Take her to the shelter and have her meet with a couple dogs. She will be able to form a bond and pick the dog on her own

I agree. German shepherds are the the most family oriented dogs… but they are the worst shedders. I had one… and i would get actual hairs in my eyes constantly sweeping, dusting, vacuuming. But the love is there <3

It isn’t so much worrying about other animals… but children can be tiresome for dogs. I honestly suggest waiting until you’re kiddo is fully potty trained before getting a pet. I’m currently potty training my daughter and trying to house break my puppy and it is hell. Is there a certain breed of dog you’re considering? Large breeds are good in my opinion… Goldens, Boxers and Labs all tend to be prone to cancers and lumps/bumps. Rottweilers, Dobermans, Pitbulls can all be FANTASTIC dogs in this setting as long as the child is older. I already had a dog and two cats before my daughter was born and she is very gentle with them all even the rambunctious puppy. It can be done, just do a lot of research before committing to a dog. It’s a 14 year minimum commitment if you get a puppy! Remember that!

We have a corgi puppy, they love playing together and he is very sweet with her
I have a German Shepherd and she is the best with my girls. We got her when she was just a pup and my youngest was 5. Golden retrievers are also really good with kids
Hard to say. Most small breeds don’t tolerate toddlers well. (I said most. Plenty of exceptions. I’m going to stereotype a bit) also stay away from “herd” dogs. Bigger dogs W less energy let’s say are good with tiny kids. I have Doxie mix (doxies are known to nip at and just dislike small children I can understand why) but she’s extremely patient with my two terrors. I’d say shelter def mixes usually have less health issues wouldn’t personally know never had a full bred myself. Now if you have to go full bred go pup raise them or treat them correctly with nothing but love and authority you’ll be fine with just about any breed. Read up on energy levels as well as ask questions when you head to the shelter.

We have a golden retriever. 4 kids our youngest is 7 months, we also have cats two of which are month old kittens. Our golden is absolutely wonderful with all of them. She’s so gentle and loving. Best family dog hands down!!

I have had many different breeds around my boys. It depends on how you train them but I would suggest not getting a puppy as they are hyper and not as careful around babies. My boys are 7, 6 and 1 and my German Shepard is by far the best and most gentle dog around my boys
This is our rescue. Best dog weve ever had. We dont know what she is. But shes great with the kids. It’s all about showing them love and respect and they’ll give it back. (There are some dogs that aren’t good with kids, sure… but you’ll be able to tell that upon meeting them)
We have weenies and theure fantastic animals!! Easily trained and not too large
A lab they are very protective of children and golden retrievers.

Pit bull and collie house here three kids and other pets
I have a lab/retriever mix that I rescued and he is protective but the sweetest thing with my newborn daughter and my older nieces and nephews. Usually getting a puppy is best because they grow up with the child, unless an owner tells you this dog is great with kids.
I had an American pit and she was half black lab the best dog I’ve ever met she was always great with kids. A protective dog with a very good gentle side

Get a pittie puppy, preferably the opposite gender of baby. Teach the puppy to be “baby easy” or “gentle” from a young age and that pittie will guard your baby for life.

Regardless of the breed, the most important thing is teaching your child to respect animals. Accidents happen when people expect their pets to take abuse from children. Dogs have no way of communicating aside from growling and then biting.

No small dogs. They can be snippy with small children.
Get a pittbull. They are amazing with children.

We’ve always had pitbulls. They are really loving and very protective.
We have a German Shepherd and he is AMAZING with our daughter. They’ve grown up together.
I think a shelter puppy would be a great friend for her. One gets a chance at life the other gets a best friend and they can grow up together

Any dog that you all agree on and I highly reccomend you get a trainer not ever having one in your life. It will not be easy! Raise from puppy is a really good choice for having around kids … Good luck.
Also, best website to find shelter dogs near you is petharbor.com
English setters are great with kids
I personally would not get a bully type dog for a small child. Although the dog may be loving but kids are loud and too active for this type of dog. No Chihuahua or dachshund. They generally don’t like kids. Lab or Boxers are good with kids.
Does your town (or a near by town) have dog rescues that have foster programs? The benefits this this option, #1 you save an animal’s life and #2 since the dog is in an actual temporary home while looking for its forever home, you really can get alot more information on the dogs personality and if it will be a good match! They will be able to tell you if the dog is good with children, if it’s potty trained, any potential training issues. Also, they always come already vet checked, and spayed/neutered! Another pro (hopefully one that never needs to be utilized) is if anything ever happens these rescues typically take the dogs right back so you will not have to worry about rehoming yourself.

So this is what i recommend… I have 4 dogs btw… 2 mastiffs, a pitbull & a poodle/terrier.
ANY dog will be good with kids if raised right. I have 3 kids also…Once you choose a breed I suggest reading all the info you can on your specific breed of dog & learning all you can about them. If you don’t want a high energy dog labs would be out for sure. Make sure you do your homework & know the ins & outs! I have done all my own training for my animals & you can too if you just make it your job to know everything there is to know & what works etc. There are different energy levels & bad habits or issues different breeds/dogs have. We rescued all our babies & i would do it a million times over again!

We have a pitbull at home too. I know they have a bad reputation but she is an amazing dog. Loves my son and our whole family. She is very affectionate, and loves to play! They’re wonderful nanny dogs. She definitely thinks her job is to protect her family.

Any breed as long as you have the time to spend with the dog that it needs. Take into account where you live - apt or house. Do you have a yard for it to run. All things should factor into the breed. The smaller the space you have the more you should consider a smaller dog vs a larger dog.
We have a small terrier mix and a lab cocker spaniel mix and they are both sweethearts who we have had since pups and they are great with our nieces and nephews. It’s all how you raise them and the time you make for them.

Any breed is an irresponsible remark as some dogs are extremely high energy and demand a lot of time, that would not be suitable to a novice owner with a small child. I would suggest a small dog. It doesn’t have to be a chihuahua but a smaller size dog is going to be less maintenance, will be the child’s size so it won’t knock baby over, it produces less waste than say a Great Dane. But I would also suggest if you did get a small dog to either get it as a puppy or make sure that it is ok with small kids. My dogs are little and were senior age when my children were born but never had a problem. But there are a few small dogs here and there that just don’t like the noise and can’t handle little kids.
It’s up to you but I would not suggest a large size dog if it is your first pet. Take your time, find a good match.
Talk to a trainer or rescue in your area, explain your lifestyle and what you don’t want. They will be able to help you.

Boxers! They love children and are very patient! That’s what we had, we had awful experiences with labs and herding breeds growing up. Try and research as much as possible! Teach your child respectful boundaries too
Local rescues usually have dogs in foster homes. Those families will know if the dog loves kids or not and if the dog would be a good fit for your family. I’d start there.

Definitely reccomend a lab.
I seriously recommend a samoyed. Yes they are expensive. I paid 2000$ for mine. (He was akc and show quality) but he was a family pup. Nothing more. You can find them for smaller prices, or at samoyed rescues. They are great dogs. But have to be brushed everyday. Mine was soooo caring and loving towards my son. ![ ](https://answers.mamasuncut.com/images/emoji/google/heart.png?v=12)
Nice way to get your kids face bitten off. I’d say wait till they r old enough to learn how to treat a dog.

I personally love German Shepherds. I grew up aroundthem myself and now as a parent I own two. My parents got me a white one when a i was only a couple months old, him and i grew up together. We were so close i had him until i was 13 years old when he passed away. They are so amazing, quick learners, and so loyal. Retrievers are good as well, I have one of those too lol. I have a 9 month old baby and an almost two year old.
My first was a Collie. She was gentle, protective and loving. My Golden is a lovey boy. Our lab grew up with my girls. He was great. Do not get a small dog. Kids can hurt them, without meaning to. My border collie does not like kids. Maggie loves me. Herding breeds, working dogs aren’t usually good with kids.
We got our son his dog when he was a little over a year and a half and he is almost 4 and the dog will be for in September he is a Shepherd Terrier mix and they love each other we went first to look for dogs and we found him we took him to meet him and it was awesome
Golden doodle! Non shedding, so docile, loving and gentle. These two are best friends.

Great family dogs: labs, retrievers, border collie, bulldogs, beagles…
We have a Border Schnollie (Border Collie/Schnauzer mix) and he is so great with our kids, 2 and 7 years old.
First I’d make sure she’s not allergic to dogs
A lab, retriever,or sharped are great dog for kids
Get her a protector! Labs are very protective of their family.

There are adoption sites for older lab retreivers who worked as seeing eye dogs. They are very well trained and gentle around little people. Puppies are a lot of work and can knock a toddler over.

I’d take her to the shelter and let the dog pick her🤷‍♀️ that’s what happened with our third dog we just got. We weren’t looking at her because she was deaf, but she got her paws through the gate and was trying so hard to get my son. She’s obsessed with him.

Yes there are 2 babies in a twin bed… They have their own beds but they always end up in the same bed… But this is our girl. And this is where she sleeps every night… Since the day we brought Lelan (my 3 year old) home from the hospital she has slept right next to him… She was only 6 months old ans slept under or beside his crib when he switched to a toddler bed she slept with him and still to this day… She is the best no doubt.
She is protective and nurturing… She lets me know if a baby has pooped by grabbing their diapers and tugging it…i could go on and on about how extraordinary she is. But i think you get what I’m saying. ![ ](https://answers.mamasuncut.com/images/emoji/google/laughing.png?v=12)

Labs are by far the best dogs for children. I would never take a chance with a pitbull, no matter what people say. Its just not a good idea. My kids were raised with a black lab and it was a perfect choice. They a kind and played back. Not highstrung like some breeds. I have boxers now, all my kids are grown, they are fun dogs but highstrung.

I think a boxer would make a great dog for your little one to grow up with. Lovable, caring, sweet tempered and protective.
I have a beagle/black and tan coonhound/lab mix and he is an amazing family dog, he sometimes forgets hes bigger than my 18 month old, but when he does he instantly lives up on him to try and make it better. He also is an amazing guard dog, he is cage trained at night but we leave the cage unlocked so he knows if he needs to protect us he can get out. He just thinks hes a lap dog lol. I’ve also had mutts (unspecified breeds) and a pug/terrier mix, the pug/terrier mix had pyps with my current dog, had a boxer as a child myself, had beagles, pittbulls, honestly any breed can be well mannered and great with children depending on how they’re raised and trained. But if you’re looking for a cool temper, house friendly, kid friendly breed I’d say a lab or hound mix of some sort. They have clam temperaments that are great with children. But like I said any breed can really be a great animal with children as long as they’re trained the right way. Also any breed can be mean if trained the wrong way.
If the baby is kinda stressing you out do not get a puppy because it’s just like having two babies to take care of. Plus pups bite no matter what breed. They’re still learning what’s good and bad. I recommend waiting until the kid is 3 or 4 so it’s easier on everyone and you can see the joy the kid gets after talking to them about getting the dog. That’s what I did with my daughter and son and they were so happy:) my daughter wanted a boxer and my son a beagle. After we bought the beagle we learned that my son is terrified of the dogs though and only likes the stray neighborhood cats that we feed lol. They let all of us pet them and he loves the kitties so much. I’d wait until the kid can understand why they shouldn’t do things a little better so they’ll know that the dog can bite and scratch them even when they’re playing so they need to be careful. My boxer is a lot nicer than the beagle. She didn’t wreck the house when she was a puppy like he still does. And he’s a biter so we have to keep him as an outside dog because I don’t want to get rid of him but I don’t want him to bite the kids.
I suggest taking a good honest look at your family and then find a breed that fits. Activity level, grooming, etc. nobody can tell you what breed/dog is best for your family without knowing your family. Then finda knowledgeable breeder that can tell you what pup is best suited for your family. Animal planet and a few other sites have q&a tests that can help get you in the right direction as far as breeds that fit your life. Join fb sites for those breeds and get to know the breed and breeders.

Keeshonds r great with kids
My all time favorite breed is the lab. BUT all purebreds have issues and mutes (mixed breeds) make an awesome pet with less health problems. Large dogs tend to have a shorter life span. In ending my black lab has been a loving, faithful best friend. Excellent with kids, friendly, smart, and is always so happy to see me with a wagging tail and a hug.

Wait until the child is about 4 to understand not to pull hair and ears on the puppy then they can grow up together

Poodle. Theyre the 2nd smartest dog breed (even smarter than German shepherds) and can easily be trained. They dont shed but need groomed regularly. If you want a dog for your child, the shelter isnt the best place because believe it or not, not ever mutt is a good dog, for 1. And without knowing the history, or family, there is no way to know the future temperament or personality of the dog. Whatever you decide, DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Also, hard pill to swallow for some, but any “terrier” will more than likely be a “terror” so i personally would steer clear.
A lab might be a good idea. They shed a lot and have a lot of energy though. Good if you want a swimmer animal though. Very friendly and protective (or at least in my experience)
Border collie!! They are the best with little ones (and big ones!)

A lot of different breeds will react differently. Got down to the animal shelter with your daughter and see if they will brinf the dog into a different bigger cage so you csn intereact with the dog snd see how she will go with your daughter.
Border collie, great family dog!
I have a pitbull. Growing up tho I had a Pitbull and a Boxer. Got them as a puppy too.
Had the pit before I had my daughter tho and she’s really good with her.
Lab they r so awesome with kids I’ve had a couple in my 50 years n they loved my babies
Catahoula leopard dog! Great with kids
This is commical, ANY dog can be a good dog, it dosen’t have to be a lab or retriever …you people are discriminating against every other breed by saying that those 2 are best with kids. It has to do with how they’re raised and their environment…NOT THEIR BREED!
