Can any of yoh ladies help me? I got diagnosed with a blood clot on my lung last June they have told me ive got to stay on blood thinners for life as they don’t understand why I got the clot. Since I’ve been on blood thinners my periods are really reallly heavy ive got go see the gyno next month where they are talking about putting the mirena in but I’m not 100% sure i want it but apparently its the only thing I can have where the risks of me having another clot are low. Ive had my children d0nt want anymore ive asked my nurse if they would consider a hysterectomy she thinks they will refuse me. Is the mirena OK or caused lots of trouble for you?
You can’t gain weight on the copper since it’s non hormonal so it would have to depend on which one you got. The Mirena is more likely to cause weight gain since it’s the hormonal one of the two.
Just to clarify, the copper rod doesn’t contain any hormones at all. That’s not to say that some people won’t experience weight gain because at the end of the day, it’s a foreign object being inserted and everyone’s body will react differently - that includes throwing your hormones out of whack and causing symptoms that way.
I’ve been steadily losing weight since getting mine a month ago.
Ive had the Minera for nearly 5 years have gained weight but due to lockdown eating and drinking lol xx
I gained weight too and had constant mood swings
I have had an IUD for 5 years, I’ve lost 70 pounds…
Mirana. I gained weight. They said u can’t because the iud is in the unterous
My daughter gained a lot of weight with the implant in her arm
I had 2 IUD’s and never gained any weight
there are 2 types; hormonal and non hormonal. Any hormonal bc can affect your weight.
Had mine in for 5 years I gained weight after getting it removed. Now I’m having a hard time getting the weight off.
The only thing that makes you gain weight is eating incorrectly
my mom has always been 115 she had a hyst. and is pushing 300!
I’m getting mine removed I suffered acne hairloss and loss of sex drive due to iud mirena
Side effects say yes.
I lost almost 40 lbs with my IUD. But I was on the pill for a little over 10 years.
Are you sure you’re not pregnant? I know many IUD’s that have failed.
I gained a little after hysterectomy but I’ve lost 20lbs since covid hit us.
Yes but I also ended up pregnant on it
Copper iud or mirena?
I had copper and didn’t .
I had a mirena and I lost weight. Never gained. I loved it
I’m pretty sure everyone I’ve known to have one gained weight
I think it depends. I gained like crazy on the shot but am losing on my IUD
Yes I gained weight like crazy with mine!
I gained hella weight on that stupid shit. And I was always bloated and broke out. It was a hot mess
Yes it can. The hormonal one
Yes I gained so much on mirena
I gained 20
On mine. And lost it right after removing it.
Yes. You can lose it if it’s removed.
They doctors like to say no but it does make you feel hungry.
Never gained weight on the IUD
if it fails you can gain weight for nine months
The hormonal one can yes
gained 20 lbs on mine
Any birth control can cause weight gain
I had 2 mirena in that 10 years I did gain about 25 lbs and couldnt lose it. Had it taken out this past February and trying soo hard to lose it
OK this has me concerned reading these comments. My gyno took me off my contraceptive 6 months ago as I’ve been having side effects after 14 year use and been told my only option is the merina coil. I need something that guarantees no bleeding. As bleeding triggers crippling IBS episodes.
But I’m seeing comments saying people here have suffered bad bleeding with it… And weight gain… I’ve literally only just shed 100lbs and it’s taken 2years of hard work (for health reasons) and been maintaining it well. I cannot risk putting that back on.
I didn’t I didn’t gain weight on the mirena, but I did when I was in the copper one which wasn’t due to it because it’s hormone free. I gained weight on the copper one because my lifestyle changed when I became a stay-at-home mom.
I didn’t gain weight on depo either.
BC doesn’t make you gain weight- technically. There is a side effect of “increased appetite” with some BC so even if you don’t realize it, you are probably eating more. Once you put on weight you have to work out twice as much as normal & eat less to lose it otherwise you are just maintaining your current weight.
IUD HERE… yah i gain weight… not too much. but i was skinny before and some tummy… hehehe. but its really nicem I CANT DO TOO MUCH EXERCISE . I FEEL LIKE ITS GETTIN SWELLIN’ INSIDE…FEEL LIKE ACHING…NO PUSH UP. ONLY JOGGING … everything will go back to normal after you removed it. but youll need to work out .
Which IUD are u ladies on? I have the mirena. Oct will be a year. I have gained like 30+lbs could it be because of my IUD
Any hormonal birth control can cause weight gain. It makes your body think you are pregnant, so sometimes it can cause increased appetit and retention.
I just thought I was fat
Had mine removed after 6 mos in May still trying to get the weight I gained off and regrow the hair I lost. I’ll be having my tubes removed next month so I don’t have to deal with hormones anymore
Hormone iud? I had a copper one and no weight gain
The mirena … yes… the copper one … no (non hormonal )
I gained 20 pounds after getting the mirena
I lost weight after getting the mirena
Depends on what Dr. You have…I have heard both…
I lost with iud!!! I have had it for going on 8 years with a switch in there
I didn’t gain or lose weight with the mirena
The hormone ones, moat definitely. I gained weight on mine.
Absolutely! I gained 30+ pounds
I have had mirana for a while now and haven’t gained or lost anything significant to when I didn’t have it.
Mirena is horrible I had to have a hysterectomy because of it. I gained 40 lbs
Any BC option with hormones causes weight gain for most (not all, as you can see in the comments) women.
Not for me … copper iud tho…
Yeah I gained a LOT. I was at my lowest weight until I got the IUD. Still so so so worth it though.
I gained AlOT and bloated very bad. Same with the nuva ring.
Hormones effect people differently… so does life, though. People blame birth control for many things, especially weight gain, but don’t consider any other changes that may, or may not, have caused or contributed to those issues. Sometimes we eat more than we realize, or move less, or sleep less, or stress more. Just drinking more water and less coffee and soda could make a noticeable difference in someone’s weight. If you gained/lost weight on birth control it’s just as likely to have been a lifestyle change as a hormonal reaction. Plus, asking others how it effected them tells you nothing about how it will effect you. I’m on my 2nd round of Mirena, and the baby, and my lifestyle changes have had a MUCH bigger effect on my weight than the IUD, both times – for better and for worse. Try it before you knock it.
The hormones are what cause you to gain weight with birth control so I’m not sure how the IUD would cause you to.
They don’t affect your hormonal balance so wouldn’t cause weight gain. Have you recently stopped taking the pill/injection/implant? If so, you might experience fluctuations in your weight as your natural hormones regain balance.
I’ve had 4 and never had a weight issue caused by them.
They cause abortions I had one for 3 months lost a baby had it removed
All birth control can make you gain weight.
I gained 25 pounds on mirena. Once I got it out I started to lose the weight.
20ish lbs on Mirena
It does affect it’s a side effect Weight gain can happen with hormonal IUDs due to the hormone, progestin, used. But Any IUD weight gain is likely not an increase in body fat, but instead an increase in water retention.
