We found out our son has Hydronephosis (sp) at 15 week gestational. Meaning he has excess fluid in his one kidney that doesn’t go away. He still has it and we are still dealing with specialist and doctors. Just stay positive and keep staying on top of it. Everything will be fine.

My son developed cysts on his left kidney in utero it stopped growing and disappeared when he was born. He has one healthy slightly bigger to compensate right kidney. Haven’t had any problems, people can easily live full lives with just one. We were told to keep an eye out for urine infections but that’s about it.

We did at the anatomy scan so they sent us for a 3d4d ultrasound to get it looked at again. Been once and it looks better go again on 5/7. If it continues they will scan him after birth and again at 3 months and 6 months before they decide to do any kind of surgery (friend of mine going thru same thing her son jus had surgery)

They found out that I have kidney reflux when I was still inside my mum with long needles and tests. I’m doing good so far but I still get regular UTIs. I’m quite sure your baby will be okay. But don’t take it from me. Maybe get a second opinion?

With my last one they told me his kidneys were larger than they should be and they just had to monitor them more closely.

I was told when I was 16 weeks pregnant at a normal anatomy ultrasound his kidneys where not working properly. They watched him the entire time I was pregnant with him. He had surgery when he was 4 years old to correct it.

It’s called hydronephosis and in most cases it resolves inutero. They will do regular scans till birth and at birth to decide the plan of action. Generally, if it is below 14mm they do not operate. My son was at 8mm at birth so he had scans every 3 months and was on antibiotics till he was a year old. Then it was resolved. My friends son was a bad case so they had to do surgery when he was a week old but he is healthy 16 year old now but has only one functioning kidney so he has to stay light on protein intake.

My daughter had open heart surgery at 3 months old and then at 1 and half she had back surgery for a teathered spinal cord I found out at that time she only had one kidney she also had scoliosis…she had been diagnosed with vaters syndrome. She is now 17 years old and you wouldn’t be able to tell she had anything wrong. I will be praying for you and your little one

I had this issue with my daughter they watched her closely until she was born but it took care of itself before she was born. Hope it’s the same for you best of luck

I went through this. One kidney was triple in size another had a hole as large as the kidney. Mutiple ultrasounds, dealing with specialist and at ten days old she got an ultrasound done and all of it healed

You can live with one kidney, I don’t think you need to worry too much

My mom was born with only one working kidney. She was also born with cerebral palsy and grew up to have 3 kids herself. Even if it’s not working, don’t jump to conclusions or to the worst case scenario. Yes, it will be ideal if your baby has 2 working kidneys. However, 1 can do the job too. Try to stay positive.

My son wasn’t diagnosed until an ultrasound at 35 weeks, he was born a week later. His was bilateral hydronephrosis (dilated kidneys). He ended up not having reflux or any issues & by 2.5 was fully released from the pediatric urologist.

My daughter was also diagnosed at anatomy scan. She was followed by a pediatric surgeon and has yearly ultrasounds. She is now 5, and its been improving.

They said this about my first born that one kidney was bigger than the other went to a specialist said it was normal that kidneys do have a specific size at certain stages as long as it was within a certain range , he was completely fine I have a healthy 8 year old boy nothing was wrong with his kidneys the other one caught up to the other one is size

My son had one kindey that was alot bigger than they other they monitored it. After he was born they did another ultrasound and he ended up being fine. Praying for you. He told me not to worry to much because it’s common in babies an they usually don’t make a big deal out of it today as they would have back in the day.

When I was 16 they found out my left kidney was the size of a grape fruit they said I was born like that but back then i guess they didn’t do ultrasounds like they do now I was born in 89 but when I was 16 I started having intense pain took a pain pill and toughed it out well about a week later it started again but this time much worse couldn’t sit couldn’t lay down couldn’t walk without being in tears I made my sister rush me to the hospital they did xrays cat scans and had to give me liquid pain meds back to back in order for any relief well about 2 hrs later they come back and told me I had a very inflamed kidney and a bunch of kidney stones so they sent me to Dr.Oliver at the neurologist clinic where I live and he wanted to do surgery ASAP so about a week or two later I was on the operating table due to a blockage from my kidney to my bladder the surgery they did was a pyloplasty surgery. And I had a stint in that tube for 6 weeks. Well I had trouble with it about every 6 months for the first 4-5 years now (knock on wood) I’ve been fine only thing I have is utis but normally during pregnancy. Now my left kidney only functions i think it 55% of the time if I can remember right and my right is only functioning 75% they told me there’s a 50% chance by the time I was 30 I’d be on dialysis and thank the lord I’ll be 30 in July and no dialysis. So I’m sure no matter the outcome your baby will be great I apparently was born with mine and it took 16 years for them to find mine out. Just don’t loose hope and do everything you can to stay on top of it. Good luck with your bundle of joy and I hope it fixes itself by time he or she is born!

No but I wish I did. My son was born with dysplastic kidneys & prosthetic urethral valves. It didn’t get picked up on his 20 week scan nor did it get picked up wen he was born. His birth was that fast I had him at home on. They took us both into hospital for the night for observation & let us both home the next day. I took him up to hospital a couple of days later because his jaundice wouldn’t go and with in 10 minutes of getting up to AnE he was hooked up to all these wires and tubes and getting transferred to leeds general infirmary into intensive care . He was on life support for 2 week 4 days had to have numerous blood transfusions, dialysis and he caught septicaemia. The first 24 hours were crucial.! He’s now 5 and he’ll be having a kidney transplant later this year.! The paediatric renal consultant told me had his condition been picked up on my 20 weeks scan or as soon as he was born he wouldnt be half as bad as what he is now as they could of dealt with it as soon as possible.! Their little fighters are babies.! My boys strength is out of this world.! He’s been fighting since the day he was born n he’s still a long way to go but he’s come so far :blue_heart: hope everything goes ok with your little one  Xx

Friend of mines kid only developed 1 kidney. Dr said it was perfectly fine and that a body born with only 1 never knows any different so it functions normally. He isnt recommended to do like football or contact sports tho in case of injury to it.
