Has anyone else had issues with Mirena?

So I got the Mirena three weeks ago and had only had light bleeding so far up until about 45 minutes ago I woke up with excruciating pain in my whole abdomen area, so much that my chest started hurting and I felt like vomiting. The feeling has since become more like what dull contractions feel like except its constant, and I still feel like vomiting. I won’t be able to see my GYNO until maybe Monday, but has anyone else had these problems with the IUD?

Same here had to get it removed my body didnt like it either. I was in the emergency room right the next day after getting it in. I had to spinal tap test was in the hospital for over 2 weeks doctors couldnt figure out what was wrong with me until finally one female doctor asked me what was I using for birth control I said mirena amd she said that’s it we have to remove it idk why were still using that thing and yes the next day she removed it and I was back to normal.

I had Mirena for 5 years. I never had a single period or bleeding with it. However, I did have excruciating pain on and off, horrible cramping, mood swings, severe depression, acne, weight gain, chronic infections, etc. It was the worst experience ever and I’ll never get hormonal birth control or another iud again.

I got pregnant with having it

I’ve tried three birth controls in my whole life. And this one by far was the worst. Compared to the inplanon and depo the mirena was the worst

I had mines had to take it out ASAP be careful and good luck

Yep.Very heavy painful periods and got pregnant with it

2 friends of mine had to migrate through their uterus and had to have it surgically removed

I have one and it has been in for 4 years and I have never had 1 issue. No periods, no pain, no cramping. Its perfect!

Yes mine was a nightmare! I had pain from the moment I had it put in! They wouldn’t take it out until i had it in for 6 months even though I was in pain! They kept saying give it time to settle, anyways in the end when they did eventually take it out it had slipped down and was out of place! Nurse who took it out made a joke and said oh God it’s a wonder you haven’t gotten pregnant! Fast forward a Couple of weeks after that I found out I was pregnant! :grimacing: WITH TWINS!!!

I had ovarian cysts form from mirena and one burst causing lots of pain. It really could be anything. If it’s getting worse or doesn’t go away definitely hit urgent care/er

I had it…caused me to develop a ping pong ball sized cyst on my left ovary!!!

It could really be anything. Pain that bad go to the ER.

Yes I had 2. The first was removed for cramping and pain like you describe and we tried a new one, same thing. Foreign object in your body. I just went back on the pill and it’s been 11 years, never looked back. Get it out!

Worst bleeding and worst depression

I would go get checked out if it’s as bad as you say. Just because you have a mirena doesn’t mean it’s that. Could be any number of things. Regardless of what it is, if you’re in that much pain I’d at least go to urgent care or somewhere where they can do an ultrasound

I havent had it personally, but I know 3 people who got pregnant with one in. :open_mouth:

I had the mirena and it ended up going through my uterine wall and was laying on top of my uterus. I ended up going to the er because of some fears. And got it removed surgically that night.

My daughter had it. Got so sick. Terrible pelvic pain. Bloating. A fever. She was so sick. The dr told her it was ok. A side effect. It never got better after 3 weeks we took her to the emergency room. They removed it immediately. She’s fine now

I use to have it. I had to have it removed cause of the amount of pain it caused me. It was awful. I bled the entire time i had it too

You need to call your ob office. They should have a doctor on callthat should be able to tell you what to do. Either what medications to take to help with the pain (some medications can make the blood thin out and make you bleed more), or if you need to go to er for more immediate attention. IUDs can cause some damage, so you need to be careful. Please call your doctor that placed it.

I had a bad experience with it mine just disappeared they couldn’t find it threw off my cycle had to take pills for a year to get it back on track I regret ever getting it.

I used to have it and never had an issue or then my husband was able to feel the string every once in a while

I have one. After it was placed I did have some pretty bad cramping that made me do nothing but pop ibuprofen and lay on the couch. Nothing like what you are experiencing though. Call you Gyno first thing. If they can’t get you in id go to the ER. It’s better to be safe then sorry.

I had it for two weeks and hated it! I experienced much of what you did. Cramping that was excruciating. Bleeding that never stopped. Eventually this weird grey jello like substance started to come out. I had my doctor remove it immediately.

If these symptoms continue I suggest a trip to the hospital. It would benefit you to have a doctor check things out. Waiting until tomorrow isn’t the best option.

Had it 6yrs i was always in pain & sick and i had an increased amount of fibroids along with loss of sexual desire because of the anxiety from pain

Nope i don’t fuck with that horror stories of it causing problems and tearing and cysts etc. I would go to the hospital

I had horrible pain and heavy periods for almost 6 months after I got it. It just recently stopped my periods. But I’ve gained 60 pounds with it and it’s made my anxiety and depression worse than its ever been (even when I was hospitalized for it). I’m going to have to get mine taken out as soon as my doctor reopens (or if I can get it taken out at planned parenthood).

I had a severe reaction to that mirena i had my period for 18 months yes i am for real 18 months straight of non stop bleeding and the most money I ever spent on tampons an pads till i got my tubes tied instead and finally went back to a normal cycle

I have not used it personally, however it dislodged in one of my sisters and tore a hole in her uterus. I know of others who gained weight and had headache/migraine issues with it. We had to threaten to sue the doctor to get my sisters removed and she was told she may not have other children (but she eventually had another).

I have had mine over 10 plus years. Been removed and a new one 2 times. I had severe periods always bleed non stop for months and nothing would regulate then until I got the one. I have never had any pain or issues except the occasional spotting. Haven’t had a period in over 10 years. No complaints at all.

Go to the ER please. I had a similar IUD years ago and being a nurse I knew something was not right. They removed it with a cup of infected pus and was given iv liquids and sent home on a hefty dose of antibiotics.

I know someone who had one was always bleeding and had really bad pains she had it removed and turned she had a really bad infection and had to have a hysterectomy

I had multiple times. The first two had no problems after my son it messed with my hormones to much had it removed after two months. I agree with above if it continues I would go to the hospital. If it is having issues it could tear the uterus and cause sterility. Can’t be to careful

I had a severe reaction, I even ended up with a 6cm cyst, pain all the time, bleeding all the time, and my thyroid was swollen and sticking out in my neck. I was told it had nothing to do with Mirena. I pulled the Mirena out, two-ish months later I am back to normal.

Ive had the coil for 15 years. Ive had no pain and no discomfort. Ive had no bleeding except spotting when the coil needed changing. So if i were you ring and get some advice. Good luck

I had it, bled for 6 months straight and terrible cramps… apparently it “fell” out with my period and now I have 2 children!!! :woman_shrugging:t2:

I just had one put in I go Tuesday for my one month checkup I’ve been bleeding since mid may I’m also on blood thinners do to a blood clot I have fibroids was to have a hysterectomy but because I got a blood clot from having my rotator cuff surgery I was scared to have another surgery but after reading some of the comments I’m second guessing the mirena I have been very bloated and lots of cramping since I had it put in but was told it would take awhile for my body to adjust to it being in

I’ve had mine in 2 yrs love it … had bad cramping and problems before I had it put in … no issues since…spotting now and then but nothing like I used to suffer with…

I tried the mirena twice after having my oldest and had horrible problems with it both times. Very uncomfortable, lots of cramping. After my daughter was born in January I told my OB i did NOT want the mirena and she instead recommended the kyleena IUD which is much smaller than the mirena. I’ve had it in since February and have had zero issues with the kyleena. No cramping, no heavy periods, a little spotting but nothing compared to the nightmare the mirena was.

Go to the er. It can perforate your uterus.

I had to have mine removed after about two years.
Excruciating pelvic pain which ending up being ovarian cysts (side effect from the Mirena is what was determined). I would nearly pass out from the pain. Haven’t had it since it was removed. Never had a period either. It took about a year and half after removal to get a cycle again.

My daughter had one and she was hurting pretty bad only had it a couple of months she went back to dr had it taken out it somehow tilted and now my granddaughter Braylee Jade is here she was pregnant cuz of the tilt

My friend recently went through something similar with her mirena she said it felt like it was stabbing her and apparently when she went to the dr it was her strings weren’t cut short enough.

I had this and it was awful I felt like I was slowly dying daily. I had it removed.

I’d go to the doctor ASAP, I had that happen to me TWICE. Both times it was my mirena expelling out of my cervix. It was one of the most painful things ever, non stop cramping, sharp stabs in the vagina, throwing up, couldn’t walk, horrible. I ended up going to the ER in tears and they realized it expelled out. Got another put in about 2-3 weeks after that one expelled just for the second one to do the same thing! I gave up on the mirena :woman_facepalming:t3:

I had cramping and spotting but the only real problem I had with Mirena are the twin toddlers running around my living room as we speak. Don’t get me wrong I love them and the are amazing but I was definitely not expecting them. Lol seriously though I would definitely head to the Dr as it sounds like it is not in right. I hope you get some relief soon.

They are awful!!! Get that thing out of you ASAP!

Never had Mirena, but I did have an IUD. It was great for birth control, but horrible on menstrual cycles. About 2 days before I would start, I would have a nagging pain in my lower back that would eventually travel to my pelvic area. Periods were super heavy and the cramping was the worst ever. I lasted about 1 year or so with an IUD, and had it removed. Just couldn’t handle it anymore. I’m thinking that’s all IUD’s, not just specific brands. Go see you GYN ASAP!

I don’t have any problems with mine. Get that looked at! Go to urgent care

I’m on my third mirena, 12 years, never had any issues, side effects of pregnancy. All bodies are different! I hope you get relief soon.

I didn’t go through what you’re going through (so sorry to hear you’re in that much pain :disappointed:) I too had the mierna iud after having my 2nd boy back in 2015 … As the months went by my hair started to fall out in the front and now I have a bald spot at the top of my head :pensive:… Also I was super hormonal and the headaches were the worst so I finally couldn’t take it anymore and I had it removed after a year of having it !! So I just switched over to the pill and that has been the beat decision ever because I completely lost all my baby weight after having 3 boys :partying_face:… Good luck hun I hope you truly feel better soon

It’s still fresh. It’s probably fine… gas will give you terrible cramps, Bowel backups can also put pressure on it… don’t even worry yourself. Maybe you twisted a wrong way when you were sleeping… your body will eventually form around it like a piercing but pressure from gas and bloating still bugs me and I’ve had it for almost 3 years

Not to be an alarmist, but I had severe and excruciating abdominal pain when I had Mirena and it turned out it was semi-imbedded in my uterine wall. I had to be put under anesthesia to have it removed. Hopefully it’s one of the things people said above, but don’t wait too long to get checked out just to be safe. My doctor thought I was being dramatic and seemed surprised when she couldn’t locate the strings when she first examined me.

I had Mirena. 5 years great. When my second was put it (wrong) it caused me to become pregnant & have hemorrhaging the entire pregnancy. I lost the baby at 21 weeks. And not long after had to have a complete hysterectomy. The doctor said it had been the cause and that my uterus was black from All the bleeding. I would caution absolutely everyone against it!

Yes! It was horrible! The doctor didn’t want to take it out and kept trying to get me to change my mind.

I never had problems with mine but it caused my cousin to hemorrhage. I wouldn’t wait for a gyno visit

Mine preforated, and attached to several spots on my internal organs and left scarring. Every time I tried ti have it removed the providers (several drs LPNs obgyns) and not a single one wanted to take it out because they prefered people of native lineage to be on birth control. Finally after 7 months of going thrpugh the worst pain of my life a young dr said well I flat out dont believe you can be in the pain you say you are and quickly retracted that statement once he did an ultrasound to prove I cant be in the pain i was in. He saw the scaring on my internal organs from it preforating and fusing to my organs to have it rip off and reattach. He apologized for takimg my pain lightly said he was not able to remove it as a liablity precaution (i was in such bad shape he didnt want the responsibility of any dammage while reopening ny uterus and detaching it from my organs suscessfully withput further damage to my organs. It took 7 weeks after that day for a dr to take my case. He was the only dr that didnt push birth control (he saw the scar on my arm from tge removal of Nexplanon that took 2 hours to remove becauae THAT provider pushed it down 2.5 inches from where it was inserted
He felt the arm amd knew how much damage the LPN did attempting to remove it. He didnt force any type of birth control thay day but provided pamphlets to research alternate options to prevent pregnancy.
