Has anyone ever gotten false positive "Quad Testing"

Have ANY mama’s ever had the “quad screen” done which tests for down syndrome, Spina Bifida, and I forgot the other things and their results come back positive for down syndrome but was a false positive? Mine did come back positive for down syndrome, and I go back in the morning to redo the test. However, my doctor did say that it is pretty common for those tests to come back as a false positive and that they are not 100% accurate anyways. Regardless, I am super terrified and

Yep! With my first. They called and told me while I was at work. SOO scary and I was worried the entire rest of my pregnancy, but we said no matter what, we love her anyway. She is a healthy and happy almost 5 year old now. Don’t freak out too much. You’ll probably get lots of ultrasounds from here on out. Needless to say, I did NOT get the quad screen for my second pregnancy. Best of luck!

Not me personally but I do know someone this happened to. She was devastated and stressed and her baby is almost 2 now and completely healthy, nothing abnormal. Just wait until you know more to worry.

Yes, but opposite.
I had the harmony test at 12 weeks. Said my baby had little to no chance for trisomy or anything else the test offered to show risks for. At 18 weeks at our anatomy scan we found abnormalities. We waited two weeks to see if anything changed. Nothing changed but got worse so we called for an amniocentesis. That came back positive for trisomy 18. She was stillborn at 30 weeks.

They said it with my daughter who is now 1 year. My OB at the time did my test 1 week after the cut off date. I was super terrified but it was false. I denied any extra testing cuz it didnt matter to be either way. Point is dont freak out because they are not always correct

My friend was told her son tested positive for ds… He was born in May, doesnt have downs. GOODLUCK  … if it makes you feel better, I’ve heard of quite a few others testing positive for downs and it was false.

We denied the testing for this reason. The doctor told us the high chance for false positives so we chose not to do any testing and just wait until he was born. Good luck

Most doctors here advise against it because of the false positives and just cause expectant parents undue anxiety

I’m sure you are super stressed! I dont agree with testing that can be so inaccurate just for the unnecessary stress it can add to you and an otherwise healthy baby.

Mine did. Did the extra test and was normal

Yes the one I’m pregnant with now. My my ultrasounds are normal

Is it going to matter for how much you love this child if it does have any of these conditions. If the answer is no and that you will love this child no matter what then it shouldn’t matter what these tests say. I refused to ever even do the blood tests especially on my last cause they kept trying to get me to abort my baby cause I was"too old"and high risk. He is 3 and perfectly healthy. I would only worry if they found something wrong in the ultrasound that could cause concern

With my first it tested positive for spina bifida and she didn’t have it. Also, a friend tested positive for something and her son is perfectly fine. I elected not to have it with my other two.

Please don’t choose to live in fear. It is pointless to fear what you cannot change. Please be strong like I know you can be.

This happened to my niece. Scared her to death! She went for further testing and it was nothing!

I was supposed to have Spina bifida… I do not. I think that’s what my parents said at least I don’t remember

I had a false positive with the NIPT it’s terrifying but definitely go in for the additional testing offered to help put your mind at ease. They thought my son would have downs and he is perfectly healthy at 2 years old! Good luck!

Our kids a quadrapallegic… So… I can’t relate

Mine were abnormal for downs and spina bifida. An anatomy scan ruled out downs, but not spina bifida. I stressed about it, along with an abnormality with the umbilical cord, the whole pregnancy. My daughter was born with a sacral dimple at the base of her spine. Ultrasound ruled it as benign. They said an abnormal blood result for spinal problems can mean something as small as scoliosis, or something more serious.

Even if it’s actually positive you’re going to be so incredibly happy. My nephew has Downs and he is the most lovey, sweet, charismatic, kindhearted bundle of amazing. Don’t be afraid, you’ve got this and you’re going to be a great Mom.

A friend of mine has a daughter that tested positive for DS and up until she gave birth, doctors were telling her that her baby had DS. They went as far as suggesting late term abortion and giving her a pamphlet for it. Her daughter was born with absolutely nothing wrong with her. She is healthy, happy and has no medical issues or anything.

Dont overthink until you know for sure! you’ve got this, Mama!

If your child was Down Syndrome would you love it any less? I had a sister with Down Syndrome or Trisomy 21 as they call it now, and we had her for 57 years to love and spoil. She was one of God’s Greatest blessings to our family!

Exactly why I don’t do these tests. Unnecessary stress for what?? It’s still your baby regardless!

The quad tests are a screening test only 75% with accuracy not the good house keeping seal. They usually do other tests that are more accurate and precise. Lab tech here hope that gave you some comfort.

So… Mine came back as positive for Spina bifida twice I was 24weeks pregnant and was given the option to abort I got pamphlets and Dr even asked me for a procedure date I decided no to that and I went to further testing in ultrasound and he was perfectly normal if I would have agreed to abortion I wouldn’t have my son here today it’s your choice I’m pro choice but please make sure it’s accurate completely because these tests are wrong alote I didn’t do this test my next two babies

Is it gonna change your mind with how you feel about your child? Ive never taken the test because i honestly could care less. Id love my children either way. A childs a blessing.

Mine did. 10 years ago my test for my son came back positive for Downs. And I had to wait a loooong month to get the perinatal ultrasound done to look for more markers. He had none, but I still wasn’t confident until Iaid eyes on him. And today is a awesome 10 year old, who does not have Downs Syndrome. Of course I would have loved him no matter what but it was a lot of unnecessary stress. I refused the test with my next 2 children because of the high percentage of false positives.

Yes, with my 4th. Came back positive for ds
Did an amnio also positive. Baby is fine

Yep. I had a false positive 12 years ago

Don’t panic until it’s time to panic. And nothing is set in stone. Don’t let anyone bully you out of getting more testing done if that’s what you feel is best. How you handle this situation is up to you, and whatever you choose will be the right choice. Deep breaths. You got this.

I was supposed to be a boy, have spina bifida, and scoliosis. Non of these I was born with. I do not have a down syndrome child, but I think it would be a terrifying situation, followed by incomprehensible love, followed by special needs groups and mommas who can help you cope. I dont think if you had a down syndrome child, that you wouldnt be able to overcome such a massive love, purpose, and mission.

My ultra sound at 22 weeks showed 5 cysts on my sons brain and a whole in his heart… possibly trisomy 13… went into a high risk specialist she even tried to discussed abortion and I told her I refused to hear it because there is nothing wrong with my baby… found out by the end of the visit that my son was perfectly healthy the other ultrasound TECH saw something that just wasnt there…

My OB recommends not doing this test because it gives so many false answers. My cousin tested positive for downs but actually had a heart condition.

Back in the 60s some medical journal published an open letter written by a mother to her pediatrician. She chronicled her son’s life from diagnosis at delivery with DS, no blood tests, Xrays for pregnant women, genetics, ultrasounds back then. Baby was slow to nurse, did not meet developmental milestones, doctors advised permanent institutional placement immediately. She refused. School was not an option, as before 1972 if you were not “educable” meaning able to learn enough to hold a paying job, you stayed home. But the kid talked early and well, even tho he had the classic DS appearance. She was writing the letter to the pediatrician to thank him for his advice, but to be careful about making DS predictions because she was writing while watching her “DS” child graduate summa cum laude from either Yale or Dartmouth law school. I forgot the school.

I wouldn’t want this test for anything other than being prepared for what may be. I have spina bifida, a unique type that’s difficult to explain. I’m not sure if these tests existed when I was pregnant bc they were never even offered, maybe my doctor didn’t give them bc they are unreliable

I highly recommend if it comes to it do not do an amniotic fluid test. It can cause harm to the baby and really are you going to love them less if they do have downs syndrome? Probably not.

We never even took those tests because i didn’t want to freak myself out. They are early screening tests buy our doc told us that basically they test to see if the baby could have those things based on genes… And that even if i took them they wouldn’t be able to tell for sure till further along… So i opted out because why stress for month about something that could be… Try not to worry and just do your follow ups. Just wait and see how everything goes.

This is why I refuse those tests. If my baby does have something then we will deal with it then.

My aunt had a false positive but that was 30 years ago…downsyndrome people are like the best people ever!

When i was pregnant with my daughter they told me that she had microcephaly referred me to a specialist. I was so scared for her. I got into the specialist 2 weeks later and come to find out my daughter was totally fine and according to the specialist, my OB office tested her for it waay too soon and thats why her head was measuring so small. Dont stress yourself out mama. I was a wreck for 2 weeks bc of that and the stress is not good for baby! Try not to stress until you get the second test done. Those tests arent always accurate anyway. Plus as scary as it may be, that’s your baby and youre gonna love adore and cherish that baby no matter what

Yes, my now 2.5 year old, test said 1 in 16 chance of downs syndrome when I was 15/16 weeks along!

The false positives is why I denied the testing. No sense in worrying about something I can’t control anyway :woman_shrugging:t2:

This test was not even recommend by my doctor. She said it was not very accurate. I’m sure no matter what you will love your baby, so just relax and enjoy being pregnant :kissing_heart::hugs:

Dumbest test ever. Stop taking unnecessary tests so the doctors can bill your insurance. Its just ignorance.

I’ve seen it mean “twins”

The amnio is the most accurate. The materni21 is extremely accurate but only for non-disjunction trisomy 21. I was 24 when I gave birth to my son with Down syndrome.

My Dr told me the same thing so we opted not to take them.

I can’t for the life of me remember what it was but my son tested positive for some genetic abnormality. We didn’t repeat the test, but did an intensive ultrasound to look for more abnormalities. He’s 5 years old, perfectly healthy.

Yes I had a 1/118 chance down syndrome went to a high risk hospital had a ultra sound and blood test that went to 1/10,000! I have a perfect 3 month old now!! Those tests are not reliable in my opinion it’s a money scheme…

yes, it cam back positive with my second son so we did a amniotic fluid test and it came back negative.

5 kids, opted out of that test every time.

False positives are common which is why follow up testing is recommended. Lots of hugs and prayers mama!

I did it with my first and was anxious. I didn’t do it with the last 2.

Mine came back a false positive for trisomy 13. No apology for the stress nothing. I dont like those tests at all.

Yes that can be way off. They though my son had trisomy 18. He was born with a tef/ea. Doctors are saying that is why it was a false positive. I refused with my youngest and she does have Down syndrome. If their is something going on, there are so much support out their for you. Don’t google anything it will scare the crap out of you.

2 of my 3 daughters were told with pregnancy that baby had DS… They are now 4 and 2.

What are you scared of if it is positive are you afraid of loving the most precious gift you could ever have people with DS are in my opinion the most incredible people they love lime no other they are genuine happy intelligent individuals dont worry momma just remember no matter what this baby is a gift I only tested with one of .y 5 bc she has bowl issues and DS is one of the diagnosis that may cause this issue but she is not Downs just a happy health girl that needed an operation to make her perfect

Im not sure wht a quad test is, but ive had the 12 week blood test come back as a positive and after further inspection it was high blood pressure causing multiple other issues and not downs.

Mine came back positive. I had an ultrasound to see if there was any sign of Down’s Syndrome and I got the gender at that time. There was no sign of Down’s Syndrome in the ultrasound. My baby is 2 months old now and no issues.

yes. Why get tested for those anyway.??? If it was positive what would you do?? Have the baby or abort the baby??? So if the answer is you would have the baby. Don’t get tested. You do know you can refuse !!!

A doctor said mine came back positive and my daughter would be severely down syndrome and he suggested terminating because she would struggle so much in life but I didn’t believe him, got a new doctor and my baby girl was born perfect. Smart as hell not down syndrome so I wouldn’t completely listen to those test. Everything has a chance at being a false positive.

I had a false positive for Spina Bifida while pregnant with my daughter 22 years ago! Have these tests not improved in all that time?! If I were to do it over I would never have that test!

I declined the test for one it’s not 100% accurate. I told them we will see a birth. My husband and I thought it be better that way. I didn’t want to stress . Even had I took the test and it said he was down syndrome theres nothing you can do about it. It was a bridge I was willing to cross when it came time. No need in stressing myself over it not knowing for sure anyway until birth. They wanted to test me because my husband was over 35.

Having been in the medical field for years I know that something like 99% of those tests come back with a false positive. Make them retest you and don’t worry.

I’ve heard of many false positives and babies were fine

My friend had a negative and her son has Downs.

I got a false positive for William Syndrome for my son and declined further testing because they told me those tests only have a 30% accuracy rate and the risk didn’t outweigh the benefit… My son is 11 does not have any genetic defect… My sister expected my niece to have Down’s syndrome and she also is a perfectly fine 5 year old child… They probably should just stop doing this testing so women aren’t spending their pregnancies worried
