Has anyone given their kids solids at 4-months-old?

My son will be 4 months on the 24th. He is showing signs of teething AND interest in anything and everything I eat. Has anyone tried giving cereal or purée food at this stage?

Yeah all mine were weaned at this age my first 2 had baby jar food and baby breakfasts my last I made all her food more experienced  they all obviously had home cooked foods blended up once I got into the swing of things and no problems at all they are now 10 7 and 3 next month :slightly_smiling_face: xx

Rice cereal for sure. My daughter got teeth VERY early…I kind of went from bottle to chewy food. Maybe puree food for a couple months, just to introduce the food. Every situation is different, please don’t go rogue. Ask your pediatrician. I did what worked for me and mine, everyone is special in their own way!!! Good luck Momma!!!:slightly_smiling_face:

I baked and made my baby sweet potatoes and sometimes add to my breast milk. She loved it

Every single one of my kids had rice cereal and purée at 4 months

All 4 my kids had baby purity and porridge at 2 months. At 4 months they were on mash squash and pumpkin. I always said today’s babies are born hungry. Lol. But it Di not effect the badly in any way

I would do the oatmeal and mix it with some formula… spoon feed NOT BOTTLE. Also keep in mind babies nurse for comfort as well.

My kids were eating farex rice cereal at 6 weeks. They were hungry and milk wasn’t satisfying them

Very well blended soft veggies and baby food/cereal should be okay at this time. I would check with the pediatrician to be sure just in case there are any precautions. But normally solids are introduced between 4-6 months.

At that age all my kids were eating sloppy weetbix

Times have changed and we know better. 4 months is too young and I highly doubt they’re showing all the signs for solids like sitting unassisted or no tongue thrust motion anymore. Some GIs think the reason gen x and millennials have so many gastro problems because we’re the gens who fed at 4 months plus baby foods and cereals became way more readily available. My mom started at 3 and while I seemed fine at the time, I later developed a paralyzed stomach and my doctor thinks they’re linked. Damages to the intestinal tract take time to show. They have all the time in the world to worry about food mama, teething makes them want to chew yes but they only need formula or breastmilk til 6 months. Rice cereal is just filler but that’s what I would start with mixed with a little of their milk. Mine were also both preemies so I was careful introducing anything until it was actually needed. My first didn’t have anything but her milk til 7 months but then we’ve always done BLW after

Depends my oldest I was told to feed at 4 months my docs everyone but I realized he wasn’t ready every baby different my second third I fed at 6 months my 4th 5 months she was ready and my now 6 months old we started at 4 months he has shown interest like that I started with a tiny bit of puree to see how he would do and he was able to swallow like he’s been doing it forever :person_shrugging: but that’s my experience with it all

I started both my kids at 3 months

I started both my babies with Greek yogurt at 4 months. Never did rice cereal

I started as soon as my kids were able to sit up on their own , about 4-4 1/2 months old

I did cereal first. Once he was handling/ swallowing that well I added some pureed fruit. For afternoon I would do a vegetable. I also gave him the baby teethers. Those really helped him learn how to chew. Then puffs. After that I slowly introduced food. I mash up bananas and anything soft that isn’t hard to chew. He ended up doing really well and was able to chew fine. Now at 7 months all he eats is soft foods and he has no teeth. I feel like it really depends on the child. You as a parent also have to really watch the child to make sure they can chew and swallow properly.

I gave both my girls rice cereal and formula mix

I did because I had my kids in the 90s and it was recommended to start then. My pediatrician recommended i start right at 4 months. Things have changed and research has proved the need for change.

We started soft foods at 4 months with the Drs ok. My daughter’s first food was avocado. She is still a huge foodie

I did with my third, he’s two now. Just make sure you only introduce one food at a time for a few days incase of allergy.

Research gut readyness. Tongue reflex at what age they can swallow food without a higher chance of choking.

I say wait a couple months.

My kids were all hungry. I started cereal at 6 weeks. Added other stuff gradually.

Back when I had kids we did give cereal and purees around 3-4 mo depending on maturity of child and readiness. Are they mimicking mouthing when u eat? Do they open and close mouth fiercely when you are eating? Are they in pure delight and joy when food is around them and attracted to it? Can they hold up head by themselves? Have you spoken to your pediatrician?
Rice cereal and formula iron breastmilk is a great start in a thin mixture on a spoon. No more than 1-2 tablespoons in the beginning. And move forward with more as you see they are hungry and no signs of choking distrest or signs of allergy.
If all that checks out. After a few weeks you can incorporate a new cereal. Until baby has been on them and eats well. Slowly move to chunky/solids as the months progress.
Just remember the stomach is a biome and interrupting to early while developing can have life long damages.
Have fun and enjoy feeding your baby when you feel they are ready.

Yes I started both my babies solids at 4 months.

Yep sure did and it worked for me.

Most of mine were on solids before 4 months my last baby was 5 months and that’s the longest I got with any of them. Start with small amounts if it affects their tummy you’ll know and then you’ll know they aren’t ready.

Yes I was giving both my boys that at 3 months. Try it out and I wouldn’t give the baby a lot at first

My Dr’s told me to start at 6 weeks. Milk wasn’t enough, yes spoon feed, n❤be in bottles add veggies one at a time for allergies. They both cut teeth on pork chop bone and chicken legs…

I got my lab puppy at six weeks, less time was good until I got kidnapped.

Yes. If baby doesn’t like it they will soon let you know

Current recommendations state solids are okay at 4 months with signs of readiness and approval from there ped. So after their 4 month visit make a decision.

My grand has a whole set of chompers. My grand at 6 had permanent teeth and is getting ready to have the last 4 coming in.They didn’t even both her Started looking sing baby teeth at 22 months

With my first my pediatrician give the ok for purée at 4 months but baby was showing all signs of readyness

Both my kids started around 4 months on oatmeal/rice cereal. They were eating baby food twice a day by 6 months

babies needs to be able to sit unassisted before anything other than formula/bm is introduced :slightly_smiling_face:

Make your own baby food and feed and feed those babies! Moms need to follow what is right for their family not what the media tells them! You’re instinct are better than you know.

I think there are some baby yoghurts that are okay at that age. I gave mine millet porridge from about five months because they started stealing food. Millet porridge is apparently kinder than oatmeal or baby rice. You just make it like oatmeal but with millet.

My kids nor grandkids ever ate baby food! They ate straight from the table!

I gave mine 3 mos rice cereal in a bowl with spoon, please don’t put it in a bottle, imho that’s just lazy

It isn\t necessary if you’re breastfeeding, but little bits of puree are more for fun!

Baby’s gut isn’t ready for anything other than formula or breastmilk until 6 months. It can contribute to food allergies, eczema, and a slew of GI issues later in life.

Ask your ped. They’ll know more than Facebook

We started at 3 months🤷🏻‍♀️ her Dr recommended Rice cereal in her bottle at 8 weeks because she was still hungry with 8-10ozs. She was just a hungry baby

The American Academy of Pediatrics says solids before 6 months is NOT okay. Their gut is not developed enough for it. Any doctor that recommended it before that has outdated information or it’s specifically for children really struggling with acid reflux.

My moms family harassed me awful until I gave in & fed him solids. I gave in. Now my son has stomach issues.

It’s not recommended until their stomach muscles are developed enough to digest solid foods. An indicator of this is sitting up on their own. When you feed a baby solids before they’re ready it makes their body work harder. That’s why many babies sleep longer when fed cereal. They’re exhausted. Many adults who were fed solids before they were ready have stomach issues such as GERD, chronic heartburn, IBS or other digestive issues. Their mothers literally damaged their digestive systems.

I bet your baby shows interest in everything you do. Sit at the table with them securely in a highchair while you cut vegetables. I bet they watch you. Are you going to give them a knife now? Yeah that’s the same as giving solid food before they’re able to sit up without support. You recognize they’re not mature enough to handle a knife. Recognize they’re not mature enough to eat solid food.

Babies are curious, showing interest in what you’re eating isn’t a sign of being ready for solids. Is baby sitting unassisted? What about the tongue thrust motion? Talk to babies pediatrician, but 6 months is minimum for many reasons, early starting on solids has been linked to later gut problems. Also, skip Rice cereal when you do start, it has absolutely no nutritional value. There’s a saying also; food before 1 is just for fun, because until 1, all they need is breastmilk or formula. There’s a lot of learning that goes with solids, sure, but their main nutrients should still be from milk/formula. Solids shouldn’t replace that in any way.

First, i would talk to your pediatrician before making any changes to baby diet.
But if they say you can, that young I would start very slow and small amounts, you don’t want to take away from their formula/breast milk intake because that’s where their nutrients come from, and you also need to watch for any reactions to new foods. Super important that they’re able to sit too. My first was not ready at 4 months, we waited until 5 or 6. My second started with soupy cereal at about 4.5 months and purees at 5 months but only on days she seemed like the formula wasn’t cutting it. Now at 6 months she eats a puree once every day along with her normal amount of formula.

No. No solids before 6 months as per the recommendation of the AAP.
