Healthy recipe ideas?

Expecting moms, I had my 1 hr glucose test done and failed it with a 166. Now my dr is saying I go ASAP to take the 3hr, but I need to eat healthy before going. What are good foods you’ve eaten that are healthy? Drop some good recipes, please! Also, this is my 4th baby. With my other 3, I’ve always passed the 1hr test. Now, if you failed the 1 hr, have you passed the 3 hr, or is it just like you will fail the 3hr?

Low carb low sugar diet before glucose test

I would guess more proteins, but not sure

Low carbs! Less than 45g per meal! And low sugar. I failed my 3hr glucose and was diagnosed with GD. Thankfully it’s controlled by diet. I eat lots of protein and veggies.

I failed both. Eat less carbs more protein

You have to fast for 12 hours before and they load you up with so much sugar with the 3 hour drink. I don’t think what you’re eating leading up to it matters at all. They test your sugar upon arrival and then once every hour.

I failed the 1 hour with a 153 and then immediately threw up after drinking the 3 hr drink. They cancelled it and ordered me a glucose meter and I have to take my sugar 4x a day. It hasn’t risen above 110. It’s riiiiiculous.

I failed the 1 hr but passed the 3 hr. Try to limit carbs!!

I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour with my second child. I just didn’t eat anything before the 3 hour test. I only drank water that morning. I ate like I normally did the night before.

My doctor didn’t even require a 3 hour test when I failed the 1 hour. I was able to manage with diet.

I failed the one hour and passed the 3 hour by only a couple of numbers. I just barely passed it to the point that my OBGYN told me to watch my carb intake for the rest of my pregnancy so she didn’t grow too big since I’m only 4’11 & 1/2. She ended up only being 6lbs🥴

I failed the 1 hr test twice(with 2nd and 4th) but ended up passing the 3hr both times

When I went for the 3 hour, I was the only one out of my group that failed it, all the other mamas were good to go :woman_shrugging:t2:

High protein, low carb, low sugar.
Change bread to grain or wheat.

From my understanding its stay away from complex carbohydrates and sugar and eat more protein and vegetables.

I wld always fail the first then go for the 3 hr an never would hear anything back smh. Now I’m on my 5th pregnancy an I barley passed the one hour. Eat salads, not alot of carbs.

I failed 1hr, passed 2hr (no 3hr one here) eggs on wholemeal toast is great, cut out sugar, and processed foods, lower fruit amount, up veges, lean red meats, fish, eggs, lentles, nuts, seeds, salads, bake things vs deep fry, avoid takeaways.

I failed the 1 hr twice out of 5 pregnancies. Both times I failed I had gestational diabetes. I was never able to eat past midnight with my testing the night before it and only water. I would limit carb intake. The main thing is portion control and size when eating things with a lot of carbs like potatoes and things like that my nutritionist told me. Eating small meals and snacks frequent vs a big meal at the end of the day they said helps. A good meal would be chicken, maybe some steamed broccoli and a salad.

I’m a phlebotomist. A lot of times the mom fail the 1 hour but pass the 3 hour. It’s a more descriptive test. You should be fasting as well for the 3 hour. I have some women who come in and have a candy bar an hour before a 1 hour draw and wouldn’t you know it they failed. Just a strange coincidence…

I failed the one hr with a 144 but passed the 3 hrs test.

Try to fast do it in the morning. I ate all day before my first one and failed. Made the second one in the morning and didn’t eat and passed it. Tip bring some snacks so you have something to eat right afternoon

I failed the 1 hr on my first 2 and passed on my 3rd. For the 3 hr test for my first 2 i passed. I had better numbers with the lemon lime drink. Orange was nasty and made me have an aversion to orange soda for years. Good luck

I failed the first and passed the 3 hour one. I just didn’t eat/drink anything with sugar the night before. Had a salad for dinner and veggies for a late night snack. Good luck mama!

I had to fast with all mine :woman_shrugging:t4:

Both my babies I failed the 1 HR and passed the 3 hr

Why asap? I failed and my ob just scheduled my 3 hour the next week… not asap… and I didn’t have to change my diet just fast the day of. The 3 hour sucks cause u have to just sit there for 3 hours can’t take a nap cause it messes with the test… it was forever long 3 hours felt like 9

I failed the 1 hr with 2 of my 5 pregnancies but always passed the 3hr - just make sure to eat nothing after midnight for the 3 hr test, you have to be fasting

I wouldn’t eat anything and potentially manipulate the results. Just go get it done

With my second I failed by3 points and they still made me retest. It’s terrible and your STARVING by the end of it. Go with a good lean protein and salad or low carb sides.

Oh lord. I passed the first with all 3 of my kids. I’ve never even heard of a 3 hour long glucose test.

Had gestational diabetes with my first, not with my second baby. Look at what you’re drinking first. Give up juice and soda (even diet), stick to water, milk, tea, coffee (milk/cream, no sugar), non-sweetened seltzer. There are now many varieties of all these drinks (Hint waters, oat, almond, soy, cashew & coconut milk, tons of herbal, decaf, medicinal & black teas, including ones that taste like coffee, etc.)

Think of centering your meals around colorful vegetables. Buy frozen bags of vegetable medleys and add cheese, meat, nuts, peanut/cashew/almond butter or tahini. Hummous is tasty & healthy, as is cottage cheese. Cut up veggies and dip is nice for summer, and you can grill any firm vegetables on the grill. Brush veggies with olive oil & lemon, Italian salad dressing, a dusting of grated cheese and or herbs and spices of your choosing. Balsamic vinegar makes everything taste better. Marinate portobellos in balsamic vinegar, grill or broil them, and top with Roquefort cheese. I roast Brussels sprouts with balsamic glaze & crumble bacon on them.

Plain yogurt is wonderful. Add fresh fruit, nuts and/or seeds, granola, even a few dark chocolate chips. Hot cereal (oatmeal, grits) are good. Use unsweetened applesauce as a sweetener instead of butter and sugar or syrup.

Switch to whole wheat/100% whole grain pasta and bread, and have half the normal portion, go for brown vs white rice (it’s an option at most Chinese restaurants and comes in those 90-second packs for convenience.

Cut back on all carbs. Skip the bagels or go with whole wheat “Bagel Skinnys” for breakfast. Eggs are good. If you get bags of mini potatoes, you can just nuke 3 or 4 for you. If you crave mashed potatoes, incorporate 1/2 cooked & mashed cauliflower. There are pastas made of edamame, quinoa, chick peas (though still a carb), or use spaghetti squash instead. BYW, quinoa is a whole grain that’s also a complete protein, so it’s OK.

Check out vegan recipes. You can always add meat, poultry or fish. Peas and beans have carbs, but they have lots of fiber to counteract that a bit. Any high fiber food is your friend. Halve the fruit portions and limit dried fruit as it has concentrated sugars.

I love soups, as you can toss any leftover meat and vegetables in broth or bouillon (I cook a rotisserie chicken carcass for a couple hours to make bone broth and toss in some chicken bouillon cubes).

They make cauliflower crust pizzas that aren’t half bad. Air popped popcorn is a good snack; add grated cheese if you want. Have fancy cheese for dessert. The fewer sweets you eat, the less you miss them. Sometimes a few really good dark chocolate chips (10 or less) satisfy me; I like Ghirardelli.

If you do wind up w gestational diabetes you will get a nutritionist who will work with you and take into account your likes, dislikes, schedule and whether or not you like to cook.

Become an avid label reader & learn all the types of sugars (high fructose corn syrup, glucose, fructose, su tali’s eggs, aspartame, Splenda, etc.) and where they appear on the ingredients list. Also check how much protein and fiber are in things. Most frozen dinners have diabetic “points” listed on the box so you can make informed choices.

I failed the 1 hour with my third and passed the 3 hour one.

If your gestational diabetic your gestational diabetic don’t just eat healthy before it or it can skew the results it’s for the well-being of your baby

Avoid sweet foods for few days before take 3 hrs testing!

I failed the 1 hr with 157 and passed the 3hr. I didn’t change up my eating but I drank sugar free sodas. And I did the 8 hr fasting

I failed the 1 hour because I ate starchy foods the night before. Did the 3 hour and everything was perfect. They said that sometimes what you eat before can throw the test off. The 3hr test was fucking hell tho lol

Two suggestions: Eat foods that lower glucose levels. Incorporate some spice and herbs in diet. Nuts are helpful. Cinnamon helps. Two other things are also basic (though not easy): lose some weight; cut back on sweets. I once lost 20 lbs in a month by eating vegetable based soups for lunch (I love cabbage soup) and salads for dinner for the entire month.

With my 3rd kid I failed both and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I had to keep watch on my blood sugar until I had her. It never worked because all I could eat half the time without throwing up was carbs and sweets. :woman_shrugging:t2: We were both fine and she was almost 2lbs lighter than her older sister at birth when they expected her to be huge (big sister was 9lb 7oz and I didn’t have the gestational diabetes). With my son (1st baby) I didn’t know not to eat beforehand and failed the 1 hr and passed the 3 hour though. No need to be concerned too much until you fail the 3 hr and it’s likely you’ll pass. If you did fail they would probably send you to a nutritionist and the finger poking is annoying but it could be worse. Good luck!

I had to fast and only had the 3 hour test. I passed but it was horrible not being able to eat.

I failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour.

I failed the 1 hour my first time but I’ve always been told to fast beforehand and the first one I didn’t fast.

I failed 1 hr then passed the 3

I failed the one hour, but passed the three hour.

Omelette and salad is a gorgeous meal, I do mine with cherry tomatoes and a bit if cheese, sometimes chuck some ham in, delicious and healthy and low carb! (I’m a Type 1 Diabetic)

If you have gestational diabetes it’s better to eat as you normally do before your test. You don’t want to be borderline and actually be diabetic the rest of your pregnancy but undiagnosed because you ate healthy for only a couple days.
I was gestational with my first (not second or third tho) and never once needed insulin. It was borderline and all diet controlled. But I’m grateful I knew and could count carbs and change my diet in that pregnancy to keep myself and baby healthy.
If you want to eat healthier in general - cut down on refined sugars and increase your protein and veggie intake.

Why don’t you just ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist
