How can I get my daughter to take her medicine?

Mamas I need help! My daughter is 3 and has Scarlet Fever. She WILL NOT take her medicine because “it tastes yucky” and she vomits it up within a minute of swallowing it. Every time. I was able to hide it in some orange soda this morning (even though I felt incredibly guilty tricking her). Can you please give me all your ideas and suggestions on how I can get her to take this medicine 3 times a day for 10 days.

It might be a textured thing .I know I am adult now but I still have trouble taking the liquid meds .I always have to have a pill from .like the others said your best bets with soda or in her milk

I’d call
The dr and see what they can do about switching to another medicine

I had terrible anxiety anytime my daughter got sick! It was like and exorcist her whole life! I hated it! Traumatic!! Now she’s 7, and can swallow a pill! No more yucky taste!! It will get better! I saw a tiktok of a woman who filled a mini muffin up with the meds! I wished I had thought of that!

I am Proud of you!
You know the importance of getting the full dose of medication and care enough to see she gets it!
You wouldn’t believe how many don’t make sure the child gets full doses

Just keep putting it in her orange soda until she finishes the medicine. If my 6 year old son ever needs medicine I do not know how I am going to get him to take it. He won’t even try new foods.

have you tried a medicine syringe, she may take it easier if she can push the syringe and control it going in, failing that syringe into the side of her mouth as far back as you can, dont go to fast as you dont want her to gag or choke

Have her such on a popsicle first, it kind of numbs the taste buds a bit. Also, I often recommend chocolate syrup to flavor meds to our patients. It cam be a pretty strong flavor so hides it well.

Mix it with some sprite or something yummy drink wise but give it to her in a tiny cup or don’t fill it all the way up with said drink in case she doesn’t drink it all she won’t get the full dose of medicine!

Squirt a syringe of however much she has to take in a spoon top with spray whip cream.
Put her medicine in a coffee mug with creamer and a splash of coffee-and tell her sit down let’s have coffee outside on porch, mix it with chocolate syrup in a medicine cup and feed it to her on a spoon

Chocolate freckle.
She gets 1

I don’t see it as tricking her; you’re doing what you can to help her tolerate the medicine she needs to take. And as a bonus, she gets to enjoy some soda lol.
When my toddler needs medicine, I always offer a drink after to help wash the taste away. You’re jus5 skipping a step.

I use a calpol syringe, lay my daughters down and put the syringe into the side of her mouth towards the back and slowly release the medicine then make a big " well done " fuss and let her drink something slowly to take the taste away

First don’t feel guilty, because of you she will get well. So try different drinks, small portions so that she drinks it all. Try cherry kool aid or other flavors. Freeze it see if she eats it all up. Use different liquids & just give it to her don’t look at her like somethings wrong hand it to her then walk away sneak a peak to see that she is taking it. All else fails put it in a baby bottle!

We have to use suppository’s for my 2 year old because he refuses everything. We tried it all and nothing worked he would also make himself gag or throw up whenever we gave it to him

And why would someone laugh at this

Put it in some pudding or apple sauce. Why would u feel guilty for tricking her. If that’s what works then do it

Honestly just keep hiding it. I know you feel bad but its to help her. When i was little i wouldn’t take my meds and my mom had to hide them in drinks, snacks, etc. I understand now why she did that

See if they can maybe do suppositories. If she doesn’t throw up when you hide it then it’s not the medicine that’s making her vomit it’s just her not wanting it. Keep hiding it if that’s working.

Or a chaser lol. Does she like pickles? Pickle juice is a great chaser :rofl::grimacing: if it can cover up some Jameson it can cover up some medicine :rofl: #mamasuncut

Maybe call the pharmacy and see if they can flavor it for you.

Oof. Some pharmacies will add flavor to make it tolerable. Ask your pharmacy if they have flavor for meds. If not then I’m sorry you feel guilty but you gotta do what you gotta do. Juice, shakes, smoothies, add grenadine to it… whatever you have to do

Flavored coffee creamer is the only way mine will take nasty meds

Call the ped. They may be able to give something else that doesn’t taste as bad. My daughter throws up amoxicillin but can tolerate other antibiotics just fine!

Give her something yummy after. My youngest struggles with medicine and his doctor has said you can always give chocolate milk or something else they enjoy to wash it down.

Don’t feel guilty doing something that your child needs…

That’s what I had to do with my oldest when he was little - I had to mix the medicine in some soda in order for him to take it and made sure he sucked it up with a straw so that way he got as much as possible - I made sure to praise him every time he was able to do it. Now he’s 10, and it’s more of an easier fight with him - he’ll take some medicine on his own if it’s flavorless or a certain flavor, but I still have to mix others with something or he’ll gag. Whereas with his little brother, it’s a bit different - his stepfather would do “shots” with him when he was younger (little bro likes to try and copy big bro in everything), so he would have one medicine cup full of medicine and then would have whatever he wanted to drink to chase it.

I put my daughter in a Danimals yogurt and always have the pharmacy flavor the med.

We used chocolate syrup as a chaser.

My daughter takes medicine daily and I always add it to a little cup of milk, about 1/3 cup, and add chocolate syrup. And depending on the yucky factor (other meds due to illness), I add more chocolate. If she knows there’s yucky medicine in it, I offer a treat for when she finishes it

You have to stop the guilt over lying to her about this. You are doing what is necessary to help her medically. Also if she’s thrown up more than like a dose I’d call her pediatrician and ask them about replacement doses.

My son hates hit allergy meds but needs them so put it in milk bc he hates taking it normally… Its not tricking her it’s doing what you need to do to make her better…

You’ve got a few options here:

  1. continue to hide it in stuff.
Yes. You’re tricking her, but I wouldn’t feel too guilty. The med is needed for her health. I’d be more concerned about what happens if/when she catches on.

  2. Be blunt and honest about the consequences of not taking her medicine.
We like to protect our kids and that often includes withholding ‘scary’ information.
But sometimes they need the scary information.
Explain what can happen if she does not take the medicine.
Offer to continue ‘concealing’ it to eliminate the nasty taste or offer her something to eat/drink afterwards to help remove the taste.

If you need to hide it in soda, do it and do it guilt free. She needs her medicine and if that’s how you get it done, then that’s fine.
Even Mary Poppins used sugar!

Purple Gatorade, for some reason it hides a lot of the medicine taste, my kid had to have liquid steroid and the doc recommended it

I used to put it in a half teaspoon of jell. The Jelly is strong flavor and they seemed like the never tasted the medicine. Then I would give them half a Jelly sandwich. Sandwich helped to prevent medicine from up setting the stomach

If she is vomiting then you need to get with her Dr. Obviously, she isn’t getting ant of the meds and keeping them down

If your daughter has Scarlet Fever then why is she at home ? The disease is very contagious. It can leave some very bad side affects.
