How can I get my son to hold my hand?

Anytime I try holding my 16 month olds hand, he drops to the ground and screams because he just wants to run. I eventually would just pick him up to avoid the meltdown. I recently hurt my back and can no longer pick him up or get him off the ground when he throws these fits. Obviously in parking lots, and out in public, I need him to understand that we hold hands for safety. Any way to get a child this young to be fine holding hands when necessary?

All the items listed: either wrist to wrist, harness, or backpack leash… used for both my children when they was little.
#1 who wants to walk with their arm in the air
#2 they feel independent, but you are really in control.
#3 if they are like my son who went from crawling to running they are safe.
Oh, and if someone makes a nasty comment reply " I don’t remember asking you how to raise my child. Mind your own business"

Back pack or wrist to wrist leash. They make them for this exact reason! You wouldn’t think twice about putting him in a car seat when driving. Why not use the safety devices available when needed??

I had the wrist to wrist leash/link thing. I forget what it’s called. But, it was amazing for my high energy kids.

My granddaughter had to get a backpack leash for my great grandson. The backpack looked like a monkey. It’s the only way she could take him out by herself.

Unfortunately it’s about consistency and persistence he will get it eventually

Offer him the option of holding your hand or the pocket of your pants (or something else attached to you). We went through a phase where he would pick a stick up off the ground and I’d hold one end and he’d hold the other - it was a game and he had the power to choose what to hold, and I felt he was safe

Get a leash. Really. There are several options, backpacks, etc. It’s not a bad thing if it saves a life !!!
