How many mamas have a baby with a tongue tie?

My son was & the doctor just clipped it while I held him at his checkup soon after he was born. Then all was fine

My grandson was and had it repaired at 2years old. He acted like nothing happened… and was eating Mac and cheese right after leaving the hospital. I also know an adult woman who is tongue tied and lived with it all her life just fine. If it doesn’t delay his speech or affect his talking… I wouldn’t worry about it. But if he seems delayed or can’t pronounce words right, you might want to have it fixed so he doesn’t get bullied

both my son and youngest daughter did. Sons was minor and didn’t require it being clipped. My daughter’s was pretty severe and made it hard to eat and speak so we clipped it. it took a total of 15 minutes from check in to check out and she cried for maybe 30 seconds.

I was born tongue tied. It was clipped before I left the hospital and this was back in the late 40’s.

My first daughter was tongue tied, very minor but wanted it taken care of. Took her to the Doc, procedure lasted maybe 15 minutes and done. No issues.

My 3 month old was tongue tied to the end. I noticed it when he was about a week old. He struggled to suck his bottle (my milk never came in) and when he cried I noticed the heart shaped tongue tip. As an Occupational Therapist I knew what these were signs of so I brought it up at his 2 week checkup. The doctor did a quick tongue snip and it was fixed. He didn’t cry or react at all. I fed him after and he sucked down 4oz quickly. Before the snip it was a struggle to get 2oz down as he would inhale a lot of air. The doctor said she rarely brings it up and only will talk about it if the Mom brings up things that point to it as a problem.

My daughter wouldn’t latch and because of that my supply wouldn’t completely come in. She was bottle fed and it was corrected at a year old. It can become infected if it’s not fixed.

Two of mine have it. Both have had no problem breastfeeding, but neither could take a bottle. My son corrected his when he was two playing with a wrapping paper tube never had any problems after. Hes 28 now. My daughter is almost 4 now. She has to concentrate on pronunciation of certain words, but that’s about it.

We had problems latching at first. I diagnosed my son with a tongue and lip tie. None of the lactation consultants or pediatricians we saw noticed. My husband also has them. The doctor we brought it up to dismissed my concerns. I asked for a referral to an ENT who said that he would clip the tongue if we wanted but he didn’t think it would improve breastfeeding. He also said he had good range of motion and didn’t think it would affect speech. We decided to leave it alone. By that point (about 2-3 months old) he was bigger and getting the hang of breastfeeding.

It is such an easy fix to not ever do it. Talk to your doctor to see when is best

Mine is getting her tongue clipped, she’s 13 years old, dr never noticed, dentists never noticed, I didn’t know until she tried to stick her tongue out!!!

Both of my kids were tongue tied. Dr said that they would not do anything unless it affected language skills. I waited and wished that I wouldn’t have. It was more traumatic when he was older than if I would have done it as a baby.

My son was. I had it taken care of when he was a few weeks old. I struggled with feeding. He had such dry lips. Couldn’t lick them. He didnt seem to be in much pain afterwards either.

My 12 year old daughters was never treated and it hadn’t effected her in any way at all. She fed fine, never had A speech problem. The only thing that I cannot answer is about the breast-feeding because she was bottle-fed.

My nephew JUST had it fixed and he is turning 7 this month. There were issues with his speech when he was younger but no one addressed this issue. I do not recommend waiting this long to treat because it really impacts how others can understand my nephew (which led to social issues and frustration on his part).

My son has a tongue tie . I never got it corrected . Breastfeeding was a nightmare . He was learning to latch just fine , but by time he was getting the hang of it I had to return back to work so then he refused to latch because he preferred the bottles

My son had his tongue abs top lip! They cut them both when he was 18 months! It was super quick for us. He napped when we got home And after you wouldn’t even know he just had surgery!

Yes 4 of my kids all breastfed and yes had breastfeeding issues. Didn’t get corrected but the 2 older kids needed speech therapy and oldest needed braces cause of it. Should have gotten them clipped. Hindsight is 20/20

My son and daughter in law just had a baby tongue tied. Had it taken care of. No issues feeding

My youngest daughter was but had it clipped. My husband had his clipped in his 40’s.

My youngest daughter was slightly, our doctor said she would probably outgrow it which she did.

My son was 6 weeks old doctor clipped it then and there.

I wish I had fixed it sooner. By the time I got my baby’s tongue and lip tie fixed at 12 weeks my milk had dried up. It made breastfeeding impossible for us. I’m glad he got it fixed so that his speech wouldn’t be affected.

I have it and so does my son. Besides taking some speech classes as a kid, haven’t had any issues

Both of my children were tongue tied we had my daughter’s clipped at 1 and my son is still tied at 4 my daughter’s was more severe causing problems with speech and eating neither were able to latch but my son’s has never interfered with his speech or eating

My son was tongue tied. Was pretty severe. Could not stick tongue out. It affected his speech, jaw growth, and had difficulty feeding when he was a baby. No one we talked to recommended we snip it. He finally had it snipped when he was older. Wish we had done it sooner as it caused problems with his jaw growth, orthodontist said it was because of it, and a lot of speech therapy.

My brother was tongue tied and he didn’t have it clipped until he was 12. He was fine and it didn’t impair him. He just got it clipped so that he could get braces and his tongue wouldn’t move his teeth after he got them off.

I did 54 years ago. Doctor snipped in his office when baby was a couple of weeks old

My daughter had a severe one when she was born the drs left it alone to see if it would correct itself but it didn’t they waited so long that it caused a delay in speech they correct it by using a laser type instrument to cut it

Mine had a minor one and we left it alone with no issues. He is 14 now and it never bothered him. I would say though I was told at the time taking care of it early is better if needed.

My oldest son was tongue tied but our pediatrician said it wouldn’t affect his speech simply because you don’t stick your tongue out past them when you talk. He also said if it got in the way he would smack it on something & clip it himself. So we decided to wait. When he was 5, the dentist indicated his tongue was pushing on his teeth & time to get it clipped. Quick, easy, no crying after, hardly any bleeding, no complaints of pain. Now he’s 30 & no problems at all.

My son did. All the way to the tip so I wouldn’t say his was minor. But the dr said it would fix itself, and it did.

Both of my boys were. My oldest we did not catch until a year old and he was having trouble eating solid foods. My youngest was so bad we noticed it at birth. Got both fixed. At one year the doctor kinda got him really relaxed and clipped it. With the youngest he was 2 weeks old when we got it done. Breastfed both. Older on hurt (like foot stomping pain) for longer than should have but no problem with latch. Younger could not latch at all. Would nurse for 10 min sleep for 10 min for 2 weeks. nursed 10 minutes afterthe procedure for almost a hour and slept for 3 hours. Best thing we ever did.

My nephew had it. It was cut at 6 months old and it was not a big ordeal. Crying and bleeding right after, but nothing after 5 minutes. As a teacher, my understanding is not treating it can lead to speech issues later in life.

If you’re going to get it snipped, get it done sooner rather than later. When we had it treated for my son, he was able to have it snipped up until 1 month of age and then they considered the nerves there too developed and require anesthesia for it. The doctor sent me on a journey to other doctors on his 1 month birthday to have to avoid this :woozy_face:

My 13 yr old was also tongue tied, he couldn’t latch to feed had trouble talking, had it fixed at 15 months as soon as he woke up he started talking and hasn’t stop yet. They new it when he was born but never told us.

Get it done early. My son was 2 when his was done and he had to learn how to use his tongue properly

2 of mine had theirs snipped at birth, and they recovered almost immediately. My tongue is tied and it hasn’t gotten snipped, I’ve had no issues with it, my mom also did nurse me for a year and said she had no problems with me.

When my son was born the doctor told me he had snipped his tongue because it was tied. Didn’t ask, just did it. Son is now 50.

My daughter has a minor tongue tie…we did exercises to stretch it a bit…she has issues from time to time latching (which tore me up but didn’t stop her from eating). She is perfectly fine ratting and drinking at 1 1/2 yrs old now…her speech doesn’t seem to be effected either. We did not treat it per the dr and dentists recommendation.

My brother was and they clipped right away

My son was tounge tied as well. Had it clipped when he was four days old as it caused him to not be able to latch or take a bottle.

My mother said I was and they cut it.i seem to be ok ,I’m old.

My daughter had one and dr. cut it in his office at 2 weeks. No problem.

my daughter was, and the doctor clipped it right in his office.

My daughter is 5. She has a tongue tie. She breast fed just fine and speaks fine as well.

Mine was lip and tongue tied it was one was clipped at 6 months the other 3 weeks later…

My son had it and they clipped! No troubles!

I am sure I saw my dr clip my son’s tongue in the delivery room…they said no but I know what I saw…this was many years ago so no big deal now but I know he did it!

My daughters tongue is tied but we left it alone. The Dr advised us to leave it be until she was able to talk and if she had any sort of speech impediment they would clip it. She’s now 25 years old and she has never had a problem with her speech. We just left it alone. The only way you can tell she’s tongue tied is when she sticks her tongue out at you and it curls under instead of going straight out. She cracks us up with it.

22 year old grandson ! Only problem he ever had is he is not very good at sticking out his tongue

I am 42 and tongue tied. Other than not being able to stick my tongue out very far , I have had no problems at all.

My son is 18 and he is tongue tied. We did nothing and he never had any issues

Get it lasered!! Baby can have trouble feeding With lip and tongue ties. Some drs won’t do it because you don’t have to breastfeed

3 of pur 4 kids had theirs clipped before coming home

I strongly recommend clipping the tie. It can cause speech problems, choking issues and even complicate little things like licking an :icecream:.

Think about speech development too- I would always have it done- just from personal experience

We had it done because it was affecting his speech but he was in preschool.

I had … if can suck bottle or breast leave it till older.
they just clip under tounge simple

Why i can’t message u please?

My youngest is 12… she was breastfed and It was painful much longer than with my other 3 kids. She liked fine cut foods and soft stuff. Often swallowed thing whole. Often had fingers in her mouth to eat. She couldn’t move food with her tongue, she used her fingers to position food to chew it. I was unaware it was a tongue tie issue. She had surgery to fix it at 22 months old. She was smart followed directions, could color, use scissors, do puzzles but didn’t talk more than a couple words. Was potty trained days after her second birthday… it was a matter of putting undies on her, she knew what to do. Shortly after she started talking in full sentences. By 2.5 yrs at her speech eval she was advanced in vocab and annunciation.
My youngest grandson was tongue tied also… at 1 week checkup he was still losing weight. It was fixed then and his weight went up. He had been nursing him and he wasn’t getting enough, he’d get tired n go to sleep before he was full. She did give a couple formula feedings, though lactation nurse wasn’t happy about it. He nursed til 18 months… he’s a happy healthy 2.5 yr old.

My grandson had his cut.

The sooner treated, the better

I just stuck my tongue out playing with him he started doing it

Wow. I’ve never heard of this. I had to Google it

They clipped my sons, never any further problems.

WHAT DOES it look like

My son was . The dr. at the time told me he had to clip my son’s tongue. …this is after he made me stand outside the door as he was being circumcised. Of couse I could hear my baby crying so when the dr.came out and told me about clipping his tongue I said no…he tried to tell me he would have speech problems if I chose not to do this procedure. And he was right my son had to be in speech therapy all through elementary school. I should have listened to the dr. My son is 34 years old now and still has a slight lisp. My advice get the procedure done.

My daughter had one, not too bad. Breastfeeding was a bit hard but we kept trying and it got better. Didn’t get it cut. No problems with speech. She’s two and talks so great and a lot and I haven’t heard any problems

This is a tricky one. I had tongue tie. It caused speech delay (I also have hearing problems though), eating difficulty. When i was about 3-4yrs old when they decided to cut it. I remember it & was traumatized by it. I’m terrified of dentists to this day. I wish my parents did it as an infant.

My youngest had tongue tie. I was determined to get it cut as a baby so he wouldn’t remember it. Our Dr reccomended not to, said it would stretch. Thankfully it did for him.

My daughter was tongue tied the doctors said she had to get it fixed cuz she wasn’t eating even though she was on my boob constantly

My oldest had it. The doctor gave us some exercises for him to do as a toddler to try and have his teeth cut it naturally but didn’t work. We saw he was having issues with the pronunciation of certain sounds, especially the “T”. 9 months before he started kindergarten were had an oral surgeon put him under to clip it. He’s had no issues since (he’s 27 now).

Please take your baby to a pediatric dentist who specializes in ties! Our babe had a tongue tie, lip tie, and buccal ties. Tongue and lip ties typically go hand in hand and it can take a specialist to diagnose correctly. Lasering of our babies ties and occupational therapy did WONDERS for us and our breastfeeding/feeding journey. This is a hereditary issue and my husband deals with physical issues everyday due to his ties never being released. You willl NOT regret treating this issue, I promise!

I had our 3 week old’s corrected on Friday, and immediately noticed her nursing better and it was more comfortable for me as well. It was very minimal as well, they did it in the pediatrics office, and then immediately gave her to me to breastfeed.

My son i descovered when he was days old at home Called hospital and they said we dont do anything for that They usually rip on oun but at 10 months had his tongue clipped and his upper lip clipped Find a doc asap cuz breastfeeding is nearly impossible at least from my experience and speech was delayed so Yes Call every ENT u have to to have that done The sooner the better Good luck

My youngest was tongue tied. I left it alone until about 8 months because I wasn’t breastfeeding. When introducing baby food, she was having issues with choking.
We went to an ENT and found out she was considered extremely tongue tied ( the franulum was connected all the way to the tip of her tongue). She had a simple, in office procedure done to release the tie.
At 15 months, she was evacuated due to speech delays. Went back to the ENT and found out she was still tongue tied. The 2nd procedure was done in the OR, under sedation and a single stitch was placed to prevent any reattaching. She was talking within a few weeks.

I am 31 and tongue tied. Didn’t even know it until I got my tongue pierced. Do not recommend.
My fourth son is tongue tied. It’s noticable as when he sticks out his tongue…which doesn’t go far,the tip appears a bit forked. He nursed fine, speaks fine…no problem at all.
One of my cousins children was also tongue tied. She had it clipped. Her child has no problems at all.

2 of my 4 kids had it. My first I got clipped at 4 weeks old. The second at 9 months old after he’d been failure to thrive in a hospital. Better to do it SOON! After he had it cut he was back on the chart in the 10th percentile within 2 months.

My second had severe lip and tongue ties. Super quick process to get it untied. Sadly he was undiagnosed for the first few months until I realized and pushed the issue. Nursing has been difficult from the start because of it and he got use to nursing a certain way. But he got lasered and is now about to turn 2.

2 of mine and one of my grandkids have been tongue tied. Took care of one at 4 years, was an awful experience, one at 2 years was bad but not as bad as at 4 and had one clipped day after he was born in the hospital. I have to say the sooner you do it the better.

Our daughter had a minor one but we got it lasered at 2 weeks old because there are SO many health benefits to getting it fixed that doctors are NOT taught. (i.e. sleep apnea, jaw problems, feeding issues, teeth coming in wrong, speech problems, and others that I cant remember). She started feeding so much better and she only had pain for the 15 seconds it took to do it. The healing process is much easier when they are little, too. Even as an adult, the healing process is just the same as a sore muscle. In my opinion, what reason is there to NOT get it done (except if cost is a concern)??

My son couldn’t latch all with his tongue tie. He had to have it clipped when he was just a couple days old. It’s much harder on mommy than baby. My son didn’t cry, didn’t whimper, or anything and I cried like a baby the entire time.

My daughter had it. Dr said as long as she was eating fine there was nothing to worry about

My son was tongue tied and couldn’t talk. Had it snipped when he was two. Instant speech !!

I had a tongue tie when I was born. The dr could tell by the way I cried I was going to have a problem. He snipped it right away and I’ve never had a problem and I’m 68 years old.

My brother was tongue tied…they clipped it
