How much do you all spend in groceries a month if you don’t mind answering? We are a family of 3. My husband, 5(almost 6) year old, and myself. I grew up in a large family so I have carried the way I saw my parents grocery shop into my family and I am spending well over $1,000 a month lol I’m not sure if that is normal or not. Should I budget better? I mean we are good financially, I just feel like that’s crazy How do you shop for food to make sure you have enough ingredients for dinners and also make sure you have snacks as well
I have a family of 6. I’m spending about 700 a week. The other day I went about to get cleaning stuff laundry detergent toilet paper etc and that was a little over 150. Stuff is just high now
I spend about $500-$600 a month on food for a family of 4 3/4. It’s my husband almost 11 year old son, 9 year old son, me and the 3/4 is because I am 9 months pregnant. This month was the only time I spent a little over $900. I do my shopping by the month, except for fruits and vegetables I do bi-weekly. The only reason I went over my budget is because I went shopping for enough to last almost 2 months (in case I go into labor sooner than expected). In the beginning of January I will only need some meats, vegetables, quick meals (for my kids to microwave) and snacks. I also have a membership at BJ’s so a lot of my shopping is done by bulk
Meal planning and shopping from a grocery list help eliminate impulse buying or buying too much. We’ve recently cut our budget for everything. Groceries only buy necessary items nothing extra. I had to stock up last week so we spent about $250 total (bulk items-toilet paper, Kleenex, trash bags, dishwasher tabs, laundry detergent). My food bill was only $140 and that’s buying things for the holiday, work snacks from my other half and kids being home for Christmas break. I try to spend no more than $100 in a week unless I find a good sale on meat and then try to stock up. Anywhere from 3-9 people to feed. I’m sure it makes a huge difference where you live for the cost of items. What I used to get for $100 looks a lot different now (less stuff now). Eggs used to be 89 cents a dozen and are now over $4.
That seems a bit much but it also depends where you live. My mother lives in Alaska and pays 14.99 for a dozen eggs
Grocery shopping is killing me lately!! Single mom with 2 teenage boys on my teaching salary
I spend about $1200 a month family of four.
I think it’s also dependent on what you are eating also. I buy a lot of packaged food for school lunches as I’m a working mum. But they are good brands. I also buy steak etc. these items increase my bill.
I think you could save if you made food from scratch and ate pasta, rice, sausages, mince etc.
I really don’t know how people only spend 125 or so a week on food. Just the bare milk bread eggs …cost a lot and then do supper 6 days a week…
Family of 4 and we’re around $150 a week for groceries and cleaning. I’m in Kansas. I plan out all of my dinners and make them large enough for me and my husband to take leftovers for lunch. I only buy snacks that are on sale. No soda. And coupon a bit using sites like KrogerKrazy.com
I try to stock up on things like frozen veggies, laundry soap, and shampoo when it’s on a good sale.
We spend about $1k a month… sometimes more. My husband is a food snob. I can eat a bowl of cereal for dinner and be satisfied. He has to have the best steak, potatoes, salad, Brussel sprouts, corn or pretty much any veggie. He eats more than myself and 2 kids combined! He makes the money so I feed him what he wants. Food cost a lot more now. We didn’t spend this much a couple years ago.
Well ours depends on who we have over. Some months like the summer months we have more teens over. Lots more food we go through. Winter not so much. Everyone hibernates. Lol
I plan the meals for the week and make my grocery list off of that. We buy fruits and veggies weekly, and mostly produce as it us.
It is me and my 2 children right now. And it’s about $150/week.
Family of 3 adults, I spend about $100 week on food, including eating takeout at least twice. We really only ever eat dinner and snacks.
Oh, and coffee
We are a family of 4 and I spend about $125 a week so roughly $500 a month. That includes our other essentials like toilet paper, shampoo etc as well.
It really depends on dietary needs too. We’re a family of four, two adults and two kids (both under 10). My youngest has sensory struggles and needs pediasure to maintain weight. It’s expensive. I’m active duty military and they give us a monthly stipend of $400. If it weren’t for pediasure, we’d be within that range.
Costco can help with certain things.
I spend that much on me my mother and my four children rougly 1200 a month
3 adults about 800 a month. I need to budget better. But I can afford it for now…
We’re a family just like you. Me, my husband, and my 6 year old and we spend between $600-$800 a month. Depends on where I shop/what I need.
We do buy some products strictly organic. Though most is not.
We are a family of 4 and I spend about 125 to 150 a week… depending on what other essentials we need. 1000 seems way high but I’m sure it depends on what types of food you eat.
I spend $300+/week on food and household items. I’m pregnant, husband, and toddler we eat almost organic everything. If I had time or energy I may save more by reading ads and going to multiple stores.
I spend 350-450 a week on groceries with a family of 4. It’s insane!!
It should be about half that if you know how to cook. That’s the cost for prepped food or cooked food all month.
I work in a restaurant so I get cooked food for the price of raw food so I don’t spend jack squat on groceries ever.
I feed 7 kids and 4 adults every day (including myself) and our grocery bill is roughly 1800 a month, food is so expensive anymore.
We are also a family of 3 and have a 3.5 year old boy and spend between $850-$1000 a month on groceries
I spend about that much a month for my family of 5, one of which is a 10 month old (so formula is included in that).
Family of 4 (all adults now)…used to spend $500…which has now increased to about $800 a month as prices have increased
I spend about $1200 a month for my household of 3 (me and 2 kids) that includes household stuff, but I tend to buy in bulk, normally at like Sam’s once a month and then get fresh fruits veggies as needed, I also buy meat bundles from my local meat market so that helps I’m able to break it down and freeze it for perfect meal sizes
I’m also a family of 3 and we get groceries every week at about $800 a month. A lot of things cost much more than they did so that makes a difference as does if we are buying for a holiday and need extra things.
$200-$250 a week in our household. We are a family of 4. That is food only. That’s with work lunches for an entire work week and 1 week of supper. Sometimes it’s more depending on my meal plan.
We’re a family of 3 and I pack lunches for most of us weekdays and cook dinner every night. Usually spend $1000-$1300 a month including pet food for a dog and two cats.
We have a toddler, a 10 year old and 2 adults. We spend about $200-220 every 2 weeks on groceries which does include household items. I plan meals for 12 dinners. Simple breakfasts, simple lunch for the weekend and stuff for lunches for me and hubs at work and snacks for the kiddos.
We spend about 700 or so a month. That’s for my husband, 3 year old daughter, 12 year old son, and myself (and I’m 7 months pregnant).
I spend about that much for my family of 4 and that includes household items like toilet paper, laundry soap etc. We shop Sam’s Club for most household items, snacks and buy our meat from a meat place with great weekly deals then most other shopping is done at Aldis. We shop about 2 weeks at a time for aldis so I make a dinner menu and other breakfast/ snacks depending on what we have coming up. And we buy our meat in bulk (about 2-3months worth) and vacuum seal it in portions for meals.
I spend roughly that much for myself and two kids.
We are a family of 4 my fiancé, a 2 year old, 2 month old, and myself. We spend roughly $150 a week or about $600 a month
We were a family of 5 and spent $1500 a month on staples, $300 a meat when we didn’t have any of our own cows, pigs, or chickens ready to harvest, about $500 on diapers, TP, landary, snacks misc. That was in before 2017. Now family on 2 we are lucky to be able to spend $75 a month. You need to spend what you can to make your family happy and healthy.
We spend about that much for our family of 5 ( 2 adults, 18yr, 9yr and 4.5yr). This includes breakfast, lunches (we pack them), dinner and snacks. We do buy a 1/4 cow twice a year and I try to shop the sales as much as possible. The rise in the price of food is crazy! We also try not to eat out as much as possible because almost $60 for lets say McDonald’s just doesn’t make sense to us. I find that meal planning and meal prepping helps cut down on costs and the need to order takeout on those nights when dinner doesn’t want to be made.
Hubby, me, and 3 kids (age 7, 4, and 1). I spend between 250-300 dollars every 2 weeks. That includes household items as well (diapers are bought on amazon). However, we are major beef eaters and buy a quarter of a steer a year which is 850-900.
We are a family of 3 (plus occasional meals to my Mom) and I’m lucky if I spend $300-$350 a month groceries. We meal plan and shop local butcher shop for meats. I buy meats in bulk and break down into smaller meal size portions then vacuum seal. I meal plan larger dishes that last for a few meals each or multiple meals that use the same or similar ingredients to cut cost of buying multiple components that will only be used once. I realize region/location can affect cost drastically but $1000 for 2 adults and a small child does seem very high for me especially if it’s just food cost.
I’m spending $250-$300 a week for 5 of us. I plan out a week’s worth of meals, and with few exceptions, stick to that list. I also do things, especially since it’s wintertime, and make huge pots of soup that we can eat on for a couple of nights…summertime, I do casseroles. We get out easy with breakfast and lunch bc 4-5 days a week, there are only 2 of us at home. So, sometimes I don’t spend quite that much.
I spend about $800-900 for a family of 7. We meal plan, I also include in that snack options and breakfast/lunch options. Dinners are planned to a T. I also use Supercook app and utilize leftovers where I can. Example: today we had roasted chicken and regular thanksgiving type sides, tomorrow will be sandwiches with sides and dinner is chicken and dumplings.
Family of 2 just me and my husband spends 600-800 a month
Lately 1000-1300 a month for a family of 4. Groceries are so expensive
Food only family 7… 2 adults, 17, 14, 7, 6, 2. Probably 500-700 a month depending.

About 1600 a month for 2 adults and 4 teenagers
Oh my we as a family of 4 spend about 4-500 a month
Probably $500 a month for family of 3.
Family of 8 here and I spend roughly 600-750 on groceries monthly depending on where I go, I look for deals when I’m able too and we hardly buy meats, My husband is a hunter so we eat alot of wild… raise our own chickens for eggs and for meat. I do a weekly menu for 3 meals and one snack per day. With other essentials like hygiene and house hold items we spend around 100-150 (I do ALOT of couponing)
About $500 a month for myself, my fiancé, our 5 year old and 1 year old
For my 10year old and I… about 400 a month.
That is a lot for a young child and 2 adults.
Maybe $500 - a family of 4/5
Me, husband, 2 kids full time and 1 part time.
Family of 5, 2 adults, 2 tots and a baby. We budget about $150ish a week for groceries, with stocking up on essentials like toilet paper and baby wipes/ diapers when they are on sale at sam’s club or Costco. Roughly $700 a month I’d say with inflation now.
Dylan Ellery easily over $2000
Probably depends how your meal prep goes, but I base our menu off what I find in the meat department. Today’s turkey dinner is Tuesdays pot pie, and so on lol
Family of six, $150/week or so.
Family of 5, 1k a month, just food
We spend about $500 a month for our family of 3. All vegan and organic
$250+/week, family of three but have my grown son over a couple times a week plus weekly Sunday dinner for 7. That includes toiletries, supplements and other necessities so they come up. SW Colorado. We buy bulk frequently but I’m impressed by larger families paying out less than $400/month.
Family of four, roughly $400, monthly,I buy in bulk, and a lot of home cooked not microwave or heat and eat meals
Fan of 5 around 200+ a week
Where you are from will hugely impact that budget.we are on the ca.oregon border.prices are very high here and we have limited grocery stores.meal planning after you look at weekly adds will help, also remember you pay for convience there’s always ways to cut down on your grocery budget.if you buy alot of sweets try baking instead.lunch meat is expensive a ham roast or turkey breast Will make alot more sandwhiches.try to keep a well stocked pantry that will help to.we raised 5 kids on a tight budget I couldn’t imagine doing it with our current economy
Family of 4, 350/ month maybe. One of them is a breastfed baby though.
Family of 6 ( 2 adults, 4 kids ages 10,7,5,4 months) and we’re at about 1200 ish a month including diapers and wipes and all the other necessities.
I stretch my dollars by using rebate apps, like Ibotta, checkout 51, fetch rewards, Shopkick
About the same as you for a household of 5.
Depends on why you eat. Right now a head of lettuce is 5-8$
family of three spends 500 a month
I spend 750-850 a month same size family. Guess also depends on where you are located.
Probably around 600 to 800
That’s way to much for three people
Family of 4 here we spend about 1000 A month I imagine.
Probably 400 to 500 a month but I split custody of my daughter so half the week is it just me.
We live on an island in Canada. Family of five (three teens & two adults) and we’re spending well over that a month, and we don’t get a heck of a lot for it any more. So, ya I can see how some households are spending that.
Before the pandemic we were spending about 600.
We buy in bulk for things like tolet paper, when meat goes on sale and other staples for us. We also buy a lot of frozen vegetables and fruits. We try are best to get the store brand for most items, however that’s not always possible if they don’t have that item in stock.
$800 a month, family of 4- 2 adults a baby and toddler (and a dog)
That includes things like diapers, tp, cleaning supplies, dog food, etc. Also my youngest is on hypoallergenic formula.
No way you should be spending that much. There’s only 2 of us and we spend about 400 a month. That includes paper products.
My sister and I have 6 people in our family’s. 4 kids 2 adults… she spends about 950 a month… I’d say generally when food prices aren’t high I spend about 700 a month.
We are a family of 6, sometimes 7. We spend approximately $750/a month. Every 3 months we do a large stock of household products, toiletries, and anything else we may have and I spend maybe $500 extra that month.
We eat out maybe twice a month.
I meal plan breakfast, lunches and dinners. I make all snacks from scratch (cupcakes, granola bars, brownies, muffins, cookies). I buy instant pudding/jellos for lunches as they go farther than snack packs. (2 adults, 5 kids under 12)
Its not like i like livin like this …but itis what itis rn …family of 4 …an we gotta make $100 last a week …
We’re a family of 3 (my husband, myself and 2yo) we spend ~$400-500/mo.
We found ways to cut down by getting snacks in bulk at Sams, special items/fresh food (meat, bread) at Whole Foods, and pretty much everything else at Lidl.
To me, your grocery spending is high but I have no idea what state you’re in or what your shopping list looks like.
Family of 3 and we spend $500-600 month not counting eating out. But includes 3 meals a day…everyday.
Family of 5. About 1200 a month, but then I was spending the same when we were at 8 of us…just now we get the good stuff when before it was generic… LoL
Everything is soo expensive right now in the grocery stores!!
I have a family of 4 sometimes 5 and we spend $400 a month.
I spend 60 a week for a family of 3.
There are 5 of us, I try to only spend $300 but some months it can go up to $500
I buy meat and frozen veggies in bulk
That’s every 2-3 months monthly I buy everything else
I budget 1500 a month for 6 of us
This family of 2 adults spemsa $500-$600 per momth now, 2 years ago same eating habits it was $300-400 on just groceries. Bread that was less than $1.00 is now nearly $3.00 in our area, a gallon of milk has gone from $1.98 to $3.98, everything has at least doubled in the last 2 years.
I think you could definitely reduce the cost, but I also don’t know where you live, that would be helpful to know as food costs vary place by place.
We have a family of 4 and spend about $200 a week including food/snacks/cat and dog food and all paper products.
I spend 1000 a month for 6 people. 4 of which are teens.
I spend roughly $600-$700 for 3 people (myself and 2 kids)
About 1100 a month for a family of 9
$1,200-$1,500 monthly. Family of 3
Buy in bulk. Use coupons & no processed foods
