How much screen time do you typically allow your kids in the summer?
My daughter, our only child, will be 14 in October. She makes good grades, she’s respectful, and is active in volleyball which she actually finished volleyball camp today. No limit in our house.
If they’re good, they get it every afternoon. It’s too hot here in the summer
I have 3 kids…16, 15, and 10. I don’t put a limit on screen time as long as they don’t fall behind on what they should do. There’s summer homework, chores, and activities they do and more that I plan like movies, walks and swimming. At dinner we have a rule of no phones. Other than that they are free to be on phones as much as they want.
Me and my family (minus my husband cuz he works) have a list of things we have to do before we do any screen time each day.
Breakfast
Get ready for the day
Reset/tidy up the house
Play outside (30 min or more)
Read a book (normally I read and they follow along)
ECT. They normally watch TV/or play video games while I’m making lunch and dinner…and then they have free time to do whatever.
Hahaha to me that is a funny question! I’m a single stay at home heart mom and my kid has had 20 surgeries and under care of several specialty doctors. We are in the south and it is so freaking hot here being summer. He can not play outside nor be with others because of his immune system and being at high risk…including going to school campus…so however much screen time he wants pretty much. It is only the 2 of us and we do other things like read and clean and whatnot. But yep all day everyday it seems over here hahaha.
Well as much time as they wish. They do summer camp and play sports so I guess that time is very limited.
I don’t limit it over the summer. During the school year once home work and chores are done have fun! They have a bedtime of 9pm for the little and the teenager goes to bed whenever she wants.
I have covid kids and screen time helped us all get through it since even playing outside wasn’t an option for so long. It’s kinda stuck. They police themselves and it works for now
Free for all in my house. Too hot to be outside right now.
Depends on age. My grandkids don’t get screen time they get grandma time. We play games, play outside, fairs, truck pulls, play dough. Read books. Yes actual books. They range from 4 to 7 yrs old.
Depends on their age .
My daughter is free to watch as much as she wants but she do not watch it all the time , she
spend more time working her puzzles.
I do like the idea of making a list about the things that have to be done for that day and they can watch as they want after
Free range all year
Honestly when they are not in school I don’t care cuz it keeps them from fighting. During the school year they are only allowed it on the weekends.
6 and 12 year old and they get two hours of screen time after an hour of reading and an hour of playing outside. Sometimes they get more, but that’s the general rule.
Let them be kids! But monitor what they are doing with that screen time
It depends. If it’s a rainy day, I usually require some reading and chores to be done but then leave her alone for a few hrs. She’s 13 and has a Switch and my laptop. No phone, no social media. She has games and a messaging app she can use.
all I have to say is watch what your kids are watching !! YouTube only checks the first to minutes of kids YouTube videos my son had free rain until we caught on to this !! I’m taking horrible horrible stuff they are putting into kids videos !! And not evening trying to hide it !!! You can always go to most recently watched videos and see what your kids are watching !!
Zero screen time unless I am at a dr appt or we are at our apt gym and he doesn’t want to work out anymore.
No limit needed. We plan plenty of activities over the summer. We all need our down time. She’s 7. She can watch her tablet whenever she wants too.
They get it before bed that’s it and maybe a bit in morning
Pretty much zero …despite the season. Maybe a game or two a day…every few days.
We have no limit really but I would step in if I noticed she had been on the TV for more than an hour. We recently put an Amazon echo in her room and it’s been great, she’s spent the week playing in her room listening to music and audiobooks The weather has been awful here for the past couple of weeks but usually she’d be outside half the day too, she lives on her skates
During the summer It’s a full blown free for all. All three of the older can have unlimited time, stay up and sleep in.
My kids are 13,12,8 and 5.
The 5 year old tv just is on as back ground on all and I don’t limit his tablet so he naturally only goes towards it at bed.
Honestly. I don’t limit my kids , they play outside alot anyway… but if they get to the point their driving me nuts or just being straight up annoying they all get kicked outside. But we play a lot of sports during the week where they all have to come to each other’s and they get outside time then.
By boys are 9 and 15. I had a baby early June, so I haven’t tried to limit it too much. I have the internet set up to shut off at 1am and this last week I’ve been shutting it off from 3-6pm. I wanted them to do duo lingo and go outside or do something besides computers. I’ve been too tired to do much of anything with them.
We usually have it on as background noise and they will stop and watch for a bit then go about their business off and on throughout the day, no limit here but we monitor what it is they watch.
Some days none other days in summer it’s a free for all🤣
None. Cause they abused it & turned wicked.
We watch a movie at night together & that’s it.
Depends on how much parenting is left in me
On a non rain day 30ish minutes a day School year or summer we don’t allow a lot of screen time for my preschooler at all. Most or all of that is in the AM while I get ready for work
However much they want. They’re awake for 13-15 hours a day or so. There’s only so much “entertainment” I can come up with in one day and it’s too hot to be outside all day.
5 and 10.
Depends on the day
I don’t limit TV but I’ll limit what they watch (oldest gets obsessed with a show and it will affect his behavior).
They don’t have game consoles so that’s not really a thing to limit.
As far as tablets go the general rule is they can play until the battery dies (without plugging it in).
Sometimes we’ll make exceptions but that’s been a pretty standard rule for a while and it works pretty well.
They get about 4-5 hours of playtime at best (older devices).
They also don’t get them every day.
When mine were young they were allowed 2-3 hours a day but only on days they couldn’t get outside to play. It’s more difficult now as playing outside isn’t the done thing really and a lot more parents work so youngsters are in holiday schemes etd
I don’t limit. They’re 10,7, and 3. The 3 yr old will ask for a show and then go play. He doesn’t actually watch a lot. The 7 yr old FaceTimes all of his cousins and they have a big roblox group that they all play together so to me that’s fine bc they’re socializing haha. 10 yr old has moderate autism and has tablets on constantly but more for music and noise, he’s not usually staring at the screens. They all play outside ALOT, go swimming, ride bikes, do rock climbing, etc…and they do their chores and stuff. So I don’t really mind not giving them limits.
WOW with half the responses but im old school and my kids have plenty of toys and other things. I got 4 and let them have 10 min then pass it on 2xs so a total of 20 minutes a day. I want my kids to have a awesome childhood not stuck on a phone, tv or tablet. When its raining or to hot out we do fun family games together
It depends on the day & some other factors… Such as the weather. If its rainy & gross they’re not gonna be outside so much, so there’s more leeway for it. Same if its TOO hot out. BUT while inside theyre frequently doing crafts, reading, etc. So its not all about screentime by any means. Sometime the tv is “on”, but its literal background noise because no ones paying attention to it.
Im a single mom k. I don’t do this limit sh!t. .
I do what is easier not just for babies but myself as well.
Ain’t nobody going to come clean and cook for me
So best believe I will do what’s easier, screen time isn’t the greatest all the time. But thats why i made a homemade park in my backyard lol
Depends on how tired I am…
Screentime triggers the exact same area in a childs brain as cocaine does as an adult…so creating addiction…mood swings and damages the eye. Not good…
I have free range chickens. They go in and out as they please
Tbh my 3 almost 4 year old gets a fully charged tablet and it’s over when it dies… sometimes I don’t charge it. Depends on the day Tvs always on tho
I also have a 1 year old that plays with it too but that’s my rules. Once a day I’ll charge it. Once it’s out it’s out. Sometimes it lasts a few hours sometimes she ends up falling asleep with it
I don’t think screen time is bad and I don’t think no screentime is bad ig it’s up to you… Kids still can be smart and have fun and get in their play time with or without screentime
I feel like that part is what people worry about not realizing that part is up to parents. Even tho I don’t limit screentime we are still outside a minimum of 4 hours a day and read about 15 books throughout the day. She loves learning how to write. I draw dots for her to trace. And with or without the tablet she’s still willing to do those things.
I’m not a screen time Nazi. However, I don’t really have to be. My kids willingly go outside lol. The only time “I limit it” is if chores weren’t done. I take the remote to their TV.
