How to get baby to latch?

I’m having trouble getting my 6day old son to latch to my right breast no problem at all with the left. Advice on how to get him to latch. And is it possible that his is getting enough to eat from only 1 breast. He doesn’t seem hungry.

I haven’t pumped it because I hear it’s bad to bottle and breast.
Also my n*pples are significantly different.

Try getting the nipple shields. I had to use those for both my boys since my nips are inverted slightly.

It might be how you’re holding him, maybe you hold your arm lower on the right side or something. Also check his ears. If all else fails, he just doesn’t like that side.
If he did latch but is suddenly adversed to it, get yourself checked. Some illnesses make nursing hard or the milk tastes off. When my 3rd was tiny she threw a fit feeding off the right side and it turned out I had cancer (keep in mind my case is staggeringly rare).

Your body will compensate and your baby is fine as long as they have enough wet diapers. I would pump and get a stash going, then donate the rest… Just cause I’d want my boobs even. If you don’t care, rock it!

Point your nipple up towards the roof of his mouth and wait for the latch.

My daughter did this super early on, and a nurse had explained that it was because one of my nipples was at a slightly different angle than the other (in my case I couldn’t tell) then she proceeded with how you can pull up or push on the skin around the nipple to kind of reposition it so that it’s at the same kind of angle as the other nipple (once the baby latches, you don’t have to hold the boob that certain way you can normally let go and they won’t notice when they’re drinking away) :hugs: worked like a charm for us, she never had a problem latching to either boob once we figured that out !

Try a different feeding position.

You could try the under arm position, use pillows to support baby around your side, this keeps them in the same position that they would be feeding on the other side…does that make sense? One of mine preferred this but all my children preferred one side to the other as I’m very different on each side and am not able to produce enough anyway…:sleepy:

I did bottle and breast because I had the same issue with my little girl only latching on one. She did just fine and is a rambunctious little 3 year old that makes me want to pull out my hair

Its not bad to bottle and breast

Try holding him like a football on that side. Legs next to your ribs and hold under his head or use a breastfeeding pillow to support him. Helped my kid

It’s not bad to bottle and breast feed. I’d pump regardless otherwise your boobs will be uneven. You could donate the milk if you really don’t want to use a bottle or just save and freeze some because breast milk can be used for so many things. That being said your body knows how much milk to produce for your baby. The more you feed him the more you’ll produce. And the one he feeds from the most will produce the most. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. But I’d start pumping my other breast in the meantime.
