So the doctor called me this morning and said my last blood test showed that I have high blood sugar. I have to go in on Monday and do a 3 hour glucose test. This has me worried. Has anyone else experienced this during pregnancy? What can I do to lower my blood sugar?
Don’t freak out yet. It’s pretty common to fail the one hour and pass the three, especially when you consider doctors give completely different instructions about eating before the test.
Mine was high for the one hour and then was within normal limits for the 3 hour test, so everything was fine! My only recommendation is take something or someone to occupy yourself because you’ll be stuck wherever you’re having your labs drawn the entire time
I failed both… ended up having to give myself insulin shots in my belly the last couple of months of my pregnancy and it sucked. Watch what you eat, count carbs, no sugary foods etc
I failed both and was diagnosed with GD when I was pregnant with my son. It was completely diet controlled and I lowered my carb intake and upped my protein and healthy fats intake.
I failed my first pregnancy. I was diet controlled it wasn’t so bad though.
Yes mine was high for the first and then fine on the 3 hour one
Everyone I know failed the 1 hour test. Most people do fine with the 3 hour. Cut back on carbs is the best way to lower blood sugar.
I am only 15 weeks and have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. They prescribed me insulin Friday. I have to check my sugar 4 times a day. It sucks especially considering I’m only in my first trimester
Yeah I did and honestly it’s not a big deal.
Walk, it makes a huge difference. I passed the three hour one because I kept walking. If I didn’t walk I would have failed.
I failed the one hour and passed the 3 hour. It was soooooo anoying to do though and they bruised up my arms pretty badly
I had this with my 3rd. Failed the 3 hour one also. I had to drink only water, limit carbs and other sugars in food. Honestly it wasn’t bad and kept me from gaining alot of extra weight. Baby was born perfect. The positive side was I got alot of extra ultrasounds, like 10 after the 24 week mark.
No big deal. I had GD the last 3 pregnancies. Uncontrolled… No meds… Just watch what you eat and take in more water!
this is common during pregnancies. my mom had it, my sister did, but I didn’t. walk, avoid sugary stuff. it goes away when baby is born. strange huh?
Don’t panic, out of 5 pregnancies I has to do the second round of testing with 2 and passed the second ones. Don’t do anything different just because of the test so you don’t throw it off though, your want a true test and if you fail it then just follow Dr instructions and you’ll be fine.
I had it with my 2nd and 3rd, but not my 1st and 4th. Totally diet controlled for me. Not a hard diet to stick on imo. I had all big babies( 9lbs+) I was also 1 and half to 2 weeks overdue with them though
I had gestational diabetes with both mine…it was really easy to control with diet though…so I wouldn’t worry too much about it…unless you can’t handle eating right
I just failed my 3 hour test actually. I’ve had gestational diabetes with all my pregnancies (this is #3) and I’ve controlled mine with diet changes. Mostly being mindful or not eating too many carbs.
Yep failed with my first and now my second with the this one I refused the 3 hr one so they just told me check my sugar till next appointment it made me so sick
I failed the 1 hour both pregnancies. Did fine on the 3 hour both times 🤷♀
I was also really early on when I found out I had gestational diabetes with my second child around 15 weeks. Don’t stress just yet maybe you’ll pass the 3 hour. But low carbs low sugar. The doc will send you to a nutritionist that will help you if you do. Good luck and congratulations
I had gestational diabetes the last 3 months of my pregnancy… they end up having you do all the normal Diabetes stuff if you fail the 3hour test… you will have to change the way you eat … the thing that sucks is that when u go I to labor they will check your blood like every half hour to every hour and it will suck because your fingers will hurt depending on how long your labor is (mine was 36 hours) but then you won’t have to worry about it… they will recheck you at your 6 week checkup after birth and decide if your diabetes is something to worry about and monitor or if the diabetes is gone… just cut the bread and watch the sugars you should be fine
Follow a diabetic diet and that will help
Cut back on carbs and pop just watch how much you consume
Dont cheat the test you are putting your child at risk
I have gestational diabetes. Avoid carbs and sweets. Protein is good and vegetables.
Do ad the Dr says. A lot of women develop this and you will be fine as long as you follow the doctor’s orders. If not you could hurt the baby.
Watch your carb and sugar intake and drink lots of water
I tested slightly higher on the first test when I was pregnant with my 2nd child. So I had to do the 3 hour test. All of my numbers on that test were perfectly normal. For me, I think the first test was thrown off because of a crazy day out of town, where we didn’t eat the best.
With my second pregnancy I failed the one hour test, but passed the three hour test
I can tell you first hand that there is no way around it, I ate super healthy for the week before my 3 hour and even did extra fasting and drank tons of water. If you’re going to fail then you’re just going to fail. I have GD and it’s honestly not that bad. Follow your diet plan and you’ll be fine! Don’t try and cheat the test because it’s there to determine what’s healthiest for your baby. It’s nothing you did or are doing wrong! Just means your body is changing and processing foods differently to get your baby the proper nutrients.
Avoid high carbs. Eat 3 smaller meals per day every 4 hours and a snack in between each meal. I met with a dietitian who helped me meal plan and set my carb limits.
I had to do it all 3 pregnancies. I was borderline gestational. With my last they skipped the 1hr and had me do a 3hr.
I had gestational diabetes with my third child, look at the carbohydrate content of everything you eat and reduce it down, eat more vege and protein than carbs at every meal and try to keep food as simple as possible…avoid processed food as much as you can as they normally have hidden sugars. Look on packaging and look for items that have 10g of carbs per 100g…not a lot of things out there with that though I used to have one slice of toast and two poached eggs for breakfast which was filling, fruit can be too high in fructose so have with some protein to help the sugar slow release…I did everything the diabetic consultants said but I still had to have insulin injections as I was losing too much weight and always hungry trying to keep my sugar levels low enough…
Good luck and even if you pass the three hour test it is always worth looking at your nutrition for yours and baby’s health
Diet mainly, you’ll have a nutritionist once the glucose test is done. I was worried as well until I spoke to my nutritionist. You’ll do great and the baby will be great! Oh FYI in case you didn’t know or haven’t been told, Babies who’s mom has gestational diabetes tend to come out chubbier.
With my first daughter my 1 hour test was high but my 3 hour was normal. I wouldn’t worry just yet.
I had it w first baby. You should get at least one consult w a dietician. That person will help you set up a diet you can live with. Frankly I learned a lot & became an avid label reader & am much healthier forever for it. Did NOT have it w baby #2 because of permanent changes to my diet.
As with everything, diet & exercise & hydration fixes a lot. OB/GYN checked me every week, I got yelled at if I got off track. Incentive to stick to the diet is avoiding insulin shots.
It’s only 3 months & ends when the baby is born. Hubs had Dove ice cream bars waiting for me once I got to recovery!
i didnt pass the first test but passed the second
Exercising and eating healthy. If you have gestational diabetes you will still have to monitor your sugars but this will help in keeping you off insulin. I have had this with all my babies, im 17 weeks with #4. Might I add it gets worse with every pregnancy, and most tend to have bigger babies. Mine were 8lbs11oz, 8lbs3oz, and 9lbs5oz! Good luck momma!
