How to treat croup?

My son is 1.5 yrs old , he has recently got a mild case of croup. He had had it before where he was admitted. But thankfully it isnt that bad this time. I took him to the doctor yesterday for a follow up and they said he was clear. Chest , nose , throat. But he can not stop coughing it’s pretty persistent. He is throwing up he is coughing so much and when he does it’s usually clear mucus. A bunch of it. His face turns red every time he coughs , and he is even coughing constantly in his sleep. No fever. I’ve elevated him , used steam , breathing treatments from the doctor , vicks vapor rub , warm fluids , cough meds, cough drops , nothing is helping at all. I need advice ! Should I take him to the er or what can I do?

Cold make your house super cold and use a humidifier too. My son gets croup at 11 and it’s sucks. Prednisone helps loads too

There are no cough meds and cough drops suitable for kids under 6. Only homeopathic medicine. Sounds like a viral cough. My son gets croup every year and the cough itself can linger forever even after the lungs are clear

May just be one of those things you have to let pass. I would take him in if there was wheezing or he was turning blue.

Keep his nose clear from mucos, sometimes it drips down their throat and makes them cough.they don’t know how to blow their nose or clear the throat at that age.if you are still worry would not hurt to have him check out again, also if you have a nose bulb suction his nose it does help

You need to keep trying to find a good doctor that will take care of your son and make him well before he chocks to death on his own mucus.
Doctors are not Gods and remember that someone graduated at the bottom of his medical class and is out there practicing medicine.

My daughter gets it quite a bit u have to make it cold the best thing for croup is super cold

Call the Dr again n again lol. If after being seen, doing different things after awhike and you see no improvements- drs can re check stuff abd even resort to some steroid med. Its not always first reccomended but in times where illness is super bad and theirs no relief in a certain amount of time after the first diagnoses a steroid prescriotion can help to knock gunk out. My 2nd babies ped explained this to me bc I went thru that with a lot if respiratory infections with her. And it worked.

Does he have a nebulizer?

Happens to my son. When he wakes up at night we blow nose, drink water, give zarbees honey. We do hot steam shower or bath before bed. Vick’s. Humidifier. It’s post nasal drip.

Has he been checked for Whooping cough ?

my doctor said to drink lemonade

I’m kinda with Alyce - if you were at the drs yesterday, and today you are having this much trouble it might be time for a new doc. Can you call the dr and see what they recommend maybe?

have you tried a humidifier?

Try allergy meds for kids. I’m not sure what state your in but in Texas, where I live the weather is sooo bipolar my 1.5 yr is always coughing and yes has clear mucus. So her pediatrician gave her an allergy med to help keep her clear and when she gets like that she takes it and it goes away

You should take him to the ER

Go to the ER…
get checked out again and be sure it isn’t anything more serious.

Take him to the ER. He may need more breathing treatments plus a shot time burst of prednisone and antihistamine to reverse the inflammation in his lungs and control the amount of mucous produced.

Cool air/mist is actually better for coughing and chest congestion. And Vick’s on the feet before bed with socks over helps great with my 5 kids

I gave my son vicks and he got worse he got pneumonia from it

When my son had croup I had to bring him outside to breathe in the cool air. If it wasn’t cool enough I opened the freezer door and got him to breathe in the cool air.

I would take him in and get a second opinion for sure. Prayers to your little guy

I was once told to have them drink peach juice from the can… I’ve tried it for colds and it works…I’m not sure if it would help for post croupe symptoms but it’s worth a try…good luck and I hope your baby feels better soon!!

My daughter and son did thus. Turned out to be non typical asthma.

Try nasal spray…weird but it might clear up whatevers causing the cough. Or at least slow it down

Has your dr done any blood tests? RSV or any of those new labels for nasty old germs?

Run the shower hot as can be for steam sit inside the bathroom him on your lap snuggle let the steam help.

So my kido has this once a year. What I have learned is that not every kido does good with a warm bath or with Vick’s. My kido we have to bundle her up. And take her out in the cool crisp air. We stand out there for like 20 min. And do a cool air humidifier. With a little of Vick’s in it. And omg does wonders. And I also put Vick’s on her chest.

Better safe than sorry go to er

Take him to ER, its better to be on the safe side than sorry. Hope he is better soon.

Cold air helps bundle him up and take him outside depending on where you live that has always helped both my kids when they’ve had croup and a humidifier

Oh and the respiratory blend from doterrA diffuse it the oil is called breathe

Most insurance will pay for a second opinion from a new pediatrician or respiratory doc.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this mama :pensive: take him to the er to be safe…prayers for you and baby:hugs:

Put some vicks on the bottoms of his feet and then socks. Old wives tale but it works.

Poor baby! Take him to the ER as soon as possible! Please keep us posted on how your baby is doing. Prayers!

If you take him in they will give you something for the cough

Vics on his feet, bsck and chest:) Breath stick or defusing in air;)

If he’s coughing until he pukes, he needs the ER.

I would take him in right away. There could be walking pneumonia or something serious like that

ER should have a croup tent no?

Have you considered allergies? Anything new in the house such as a new pet, or new fragrances, new laundry products, or just spring pollen. It’s a possibility. Thought I’d mention it just in case.

I would take him to have an allergy test done. My stepmom went through this same sorta thing and she’s allergic to pet dander

Not to be rude but I am an ER nurse, the ER isn’t gonna be able to do much other than an xray and that age is to young for any meds… your peds or urgent care can do an xray… dont clog up the ER…try hylands night time cough syrup… or zarbees cough and mucus relief…its all natural worked good for my son when had RSV

My daughter did that and they kept saying she had croup until it got so bad that they realized it wasn’t croup she had asthma and was having asthma attacks

Fresh night air is the best wrap him up in a blanket go sit on your front porch for a little while well he falls a sleep good luck momma

Could be allergies & asthma. I would try getting him an inhaler & breathing treatments. His insurance will cover a nebulizer to have at home.

Unfortunately not much you can do. All 4 of my kids got croup 6+ times every fall/winter and sometimes admitted. The best thing to do is listen for stridor which if thou don’t know the sound or symptoms then YouTube the sound because once he has that you need to get to the ER for the epi neb, they may also give him decadron in the hospital and send one home if it helps. Use a warm steam humidifier in his room, and keep him elevated. The doctors don’t like to but will or should if you request it the prednisolone liquid it’s a 5 day course of steroids that works wonders. Also use nasal saline spray and a nose frida to loosen up and thin out the mucous so he doesn’t choke on it. This is a common thing in my house. Good luck!

Mixhoney and lemon juice give. him a spoon full at a time old time remedy.i did this for my 4 children it works.use as often as you need to it won’t hur

My son is ten years old now and has asthma and allergy and since he was little has had both. He has coughed sometimes days stright a inhaler and local honey it has to be local to you. It helps great most all of the time. They are some cough syrup you can buy that’s been a round for a very long time. I can’t spell it. Starts with a c comes in a glass bottle. It works better the any from the doctor. I don’t know if they still sell it everywhere are not. Only one store that is Foodland sells it where I live. It’s for children or adults but I always gave my son the adult kind it is great

Anytime you become sick with a cough, it can take four to six weeks for a cough to completely subside (told to me by several docs)
