I think my breastfed baby is lactose intolerant: Advice?

My two-month-old breastfed LO shows Symptoms of being lactose intolerant. To combat this, I have gone 100% dairy-free since a week old, but she still seems to have all the symptoms of being lactose intolerant. Any helpful ideas are welcome.

You will naturally produce milk proteins in your breast milk that is very similar to cows milk proteins which is why some children who are more sensitive to milk proteins won’t be able to tolerate breast milk either x

Dairy-Free Diet - Breastfeeding
This helped me so much! Definitely join!!!

My little one was allergy tested at 3 months and allergic to eggs, milk and nuts. I cut that all out of my diet for 10 weeks and she was still reacting. We switched to formula and two days later she was a like a brand new kid. Turns out, there was still a protein in my breast milk she couldn’t process even after all the diet restrictions. Good luck, mama! It’s hard :weary:

Cut out dairy from your diet?

No advice, but there is hidden dairy in different things. Make sure to read read read all labels.

Reflux can mimic dairy intolerance.

Don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t able to breastfeed. A fed baby is a happy baby. Clearly you are a great mom trying to do whatever is best for your baby. Remember, sometimes, children teach us things along the way.

I thought this about my little girl. Turns out she had reflux.

I had this issue with my daughter and turns out she was allergic to bovine all together, meaning everything from a cow. It was really hard considering how many things have ingredient from a cow, but since I cut it out all together my daughter was in better health and a better attitude because she wasn’t sick after each time.

Go see a dietician. My oldest had the signs of a milk allergy. Dr kept telling me it was different things. Including reflux. My 2nd was the same way but worse. WIC provided with a wonderful nutritionist/lactation specialist through her I learned that both kids & myself are intolerant to dairy. My oldest stopped taking his meds. We all went dairy free. It’s a life changer. You have to make sure you’re completely dairy free. Read labels. Milk is in a lot of things.

Take her and talk to her doctor. You can guess at it all day, but you’re not a doctor and neither is goggle. They can start the process of figuring out what’s wrong

Lactose intolerance and dairy allergy are not the same thing.
Dairy allergy is due to the protein in milk.
Lactose is the sugar in all mammal milks.
Educate yourself as much as possible.
Chances are your baby is just a newborn with a brand new digestive system that is trying to adapt. Hang in there mama!
If baby is gaining and diaper output is good, keep calm and nurse on!

Try eliminating coffee, worked for us

My bestie had the same problem with all 3 of her Littles. She quit breast feeding and put them on soy based baby formula.

All 3 of my children were the same way. As soon as I switched to a sensitive formula the spitting up and projectile vommiting stopped almost immediately. Once theg turned a year old we stuck to soy milk and now that they are older they drink regular milk. My doctor told me thag most babies are some what lactose intolerant in the beggining of life so no stress!

Consult your dr.!!!

I had this issue with my daughter. Once she started drinking Nutramigen formula as recommended by her doctor she did so much better.

My daughter had to go dairy free, and soy free. It about killed her to go dairy free cuz her favorite foods are pizza n Mac n cheese! That said after 8 months it was better. My Granddaughter was given meds for reflux n grip water for stomach aches. She did outgrow it but talk to your pediatrician.

Ask the pediatrician. I had to put my baby on isomil.

We are mammals so even going dairy free there is still lactose in your breastmilk, if you’re baby appears to be lactose intolerant i suggest speaking to your doctor about running tests and transitioning to a lactose free formula.

Very often if they’re allergic to dairy they are also allergic to soya too. So I cut out all dairy and soy and the improvement was huge xx

Baby may need special formula, best to go back to hospital to make sure

I think you should speak to a lactation consultant. They have waaaayy more information on the topic; All things breastfeeding. Tivity is also a page I follow (though I’m not breastfeeding anymore) but maybe you can find some good info.

I had the same problem with my little one who is about to turn 1 year. His ended up being a milk protein allergy and he had to go on a special formula that we order from the pharmacy. Talk to your pediatrician and possibly a specialist (we seen a GI) to help get answers on what will be best for your little one.

My sister had problems with my nephew and it turned out that it wasn’t so much lactose as it was a whey protein allergy which is found in dairy.

No amount of diet changes will remove the lactose out of her breastmilk. All mammal naturally have it. If that the cause she will have to stop breastfeeding and give him a special formula.

Maybe baby has reflux. I thought the same thing and it was reflux with mine!

If you’ve gone 100% lactose free for over a month then good chance lactose alone isn’t the issue. Go see baby’s dr. Depending on the issues could be reflux. Common in babies and similar symptoms

Gluten sensitivity goes hand in hand with lactose intolerant.

You still produce lactose even if you’ve gone lactose free. The only way to stop bub suffering is change to lactose free formula.

They had to put my nephew on a special formula. This is what it is and it was crazy expensive. WIC would pay for it because the doctor put him on it but it was never enough. She had to stop breastfeeding over it.

YOU produce lactose no matter what you eat

My daughter had a severe milk allergy and I stopped breastfeeding and switched to nutramigen. It took about a month for her symptoms to go away.

Has she been checked for ties?
What makes you think she is lactose intolerant?
You could give up milk and cheese for a few weeks and see if there’s any improvement

Dairy allergy and lactose intolerance are 2 completely different things, I would consult your doctor to get little one tested first so u know what exactly to eliminate xx

The best advise is to see your baby doctor and have baby tested for allergies. You may find there is more than one allergy. Dont be alarmed by what you hear and see here. Do whats best for baby and in the end when you have the results and be able to make the changes that will make you and baby happy and healthy.

What are the symptoms? There’s a chance that she may have a milk protein allergy instead of being lactose intolerant.

Because lactose intolerance and cmpa are completely different things

Change your diet, I had to to help my baby who is lactose intolerant. Cut out cheese and milk, even my creamer is nondairy

Breast milk will always have lactose in it whether you cut out dairy or not. Cutting out dairy only works if your baby is suspected to have a milk protein allergy.

My baby could not take babies milk, breast milk or soya. I then tried goats’ milk which which he then tolerated.

My son is allergic to eggs that I was eating so maybe something your eating

It definitely takes time for it to get better!

Go to the Doctor to make sure first.

It take up to a month for your breastmilk to be free of lactose after stopping dairy. It’s a lie that breastmilk has lactose in it naturally because lactose is an added ingredient to dairy products we don’t produce lactose on our own that’s what babies end up having an allergy to it

Doctors can test and find the cause so you’re not causing more distress with an elimination game.

Talk to your doctor. Could be another allergy- gluten etc

I was like this but keep in mind it was 28 years ago. I couldn’t keep milk down so I she use to thicken it.

Unfortunately no matter what you do to change your diet, breast milk still has lactose in it, id try and speak to a medical professional but from what i understand lactose allergy in babies means they have to be on a special formula.

You may have to make sure you are truly going 100% dairy free for a few weeks. That means checking everything you eat to see if it contains dairy, which can present itself in different forms. Even trace elements can set your dairy-free streak back.

goats milk and jello water. But baby needs to be tested at doctor’s office.

Lactose is the sugar in breast milk. Breast milk is high lactose. See a doctor do not self diagnose your child is to important. Taking foods out of your diet can cause other issues that is why we have health professionals . Get qualified advice.

My first child had this. Was basically colic. I had to switch to formula

I struggled with my youngest. There was no test (or so we were told) so it was just trial and error. I cut multiple things from my diet one at a time to try and eliminate things, finally cut all lactose from my diet when breastfeeding and after 3 or 4 weeks there was a significant improvement. After a few months I would slowly introduce lactose into her diet through my breastmilk, things like me eating an odd biscuit or small portion of crisps etc containing lactose and build it up slowly, then gradually increasing lactose through solid foods until we got to a ‘normal’ diet. It was such a slow process. Professionals agreed that she likely had a sensitivity to lactose, not an intollorance, but as there was no testing as such that is just everyone’s best guess.

If you speak to your midwife or doctor they might have to prescribe a special milk for her to have cause my cousin had to get the milk for her 2 kids who are lactose intolerant and the milk helped them to be fair and they can only have dairy free products as they haven’t grown out of it and sometimes they grow out of it xx

It might also be Bovine Protein Intolerance. My daughter had that from birth to about 6 months old. Try eliminating anything cow related from your diet and see if that helps. I had to reintroduce it slowly into my diet when she turned 6 months and she was fine.

They can also have a milk protein intolerance,so I breast fed my little girl,I had to stop at just short of 6 months as they said it was colic ect, once I got the diagnosis I was prescribed nutramigin AA then I think we had nutramigin lipel after it work amazing, the protein is in things like pre made sauces IE Bolognese, curry, beans, crisps, once you now it’s so easy and you will see such a difference x

Lactose and milk protein intolerance are two different things. If your baby is breastfed your body naturally produces lactose and your baby would not be able to process breastmilk. It’s also extremely rare. Milk protein is much more common and it’s in all dairy. It can take up to 6 weeks for the milk proteins to leave your body and baby’s and for baby’s insides to heal before noticing a difference.

If you have native Indian in family more possible for Lactose. But reflux goes along with it . At least in our family. My grand mother was full blood. It is gone all the way too great grands so far.

I gave my baby Nutramigen and I cut all dairy from my diet during the months of nursing. Around six months later, my son was fine and he eventually drank cows milk…

cut out ALL dairy even processed foods that contain milk, I had to do this and it definitely helped.

You will naturally produce milk proteins in your breast milk that is very similar to cows milk proteins which is why some children who are more sensitive to milk proteins won’t be able to tolerate breast milk either x

That happened to my baby and she was also soy intolerant. Which soy is in literally almost everything. Gerber soothe drops help a lot too! Ultimately, I would take her in and have her tested by a pediatrician. They just take three separate stool samples and do a test on them to look for certain milk proteins or traces of blood, even at a microscopic level.

my twins were 2 months premature, we found they were lactose intolerant while still in the NICU, the doctor and nurses recommended I pumped my milk and we put lactaid drops in the breast milk… it worked like a charm and the girls still got my breast milk. once they got a bit older I just gave them a small drop of lactaid before breast feeding… I recommend you ask your doctor about it…

My nephew had a stomach problem as to where he couldn’t keep milk or any formula down and it was finally diagnosed as some closer to his stomach area and had to undergo surgery to correct this. He is over six foot tall now almost twenty.

True lactose intolerance in babies is very rare, its pretty much never suggested to stop breastfeeding unless your baby is becoming malnourished. If youre baby is having signs of lactose intolerance its more likely a food allergy that they are receiving through the breast milk from what you are eating. Best thing to do is go to the doctor and they will help you figure out whats going on. One thing you shouldn’t do, is stop breastfeeding and try out special formulas on your own…

Get professional help and advice!

It takes awhile for it to leave your system

See babies pedatrician! May have to go soy formula

Look at removing soy as well

Take your child to get tested. My son got a rash after eating eggs and we took him in. That’s really the only way to be positive. Now he’s almost two and grown out of it.

I would have to ask, firstly, what are the symptoms? What is the schedule? That will help in reccommendations

See the pediatrician asap

Talk to your pediatrician!!!

You can purchase lactose free milk at Walmart for a decent price

Is it not colic? Which should ease at about 3 months.

I was intolerant as a baby i was raised on rosehip syrup i grew out of by my teens. I know there are a lot of lactose free on the markwt now. Ask the health visitors

See a gp and get her allergy tested :woman_shrugging:

It was 30 years ago for me but… I was told that breast milk is 50% lactose and the only way to test the baby was to get a biopsy of the intestines. I wasn’t going to put him through that especially after suffering for 3 months. All soy based formula’s bothered him too. So we put him on a hypoallergenic formula called Allumentum. He finally stopped suffering and started thriving. Best of luck, it’s so hard to watch your baby suffer and this formula was a God send!

The baby needs to be put onto proper medicated formula and don’t delay as i I’m sure the we pet is in pain after eating

Time to switch to formula thats for lactose

call the pediatrician. dont take medical advice from the internet.:woman_facepalming:
