Can you be allergic to sun? Since the weather has been really nice me and Isobelle have been spending time in the garden pretty much everyday, for most of the day, and the last couple of days I’ve noticed that I’m getting a lot of spots where the sun has been hitting me, so, the back of my neck and upper back, and my shoulders, they are itchy and when I do scratch them (which I try not to obviously) they hurt and the pain is similar to sunburn, im a tiny tiny bit red but I’ve been a lot more red in the past and have never had itchy spots… thanks in advance x

A lot of medications can cause sun sensitivity as well

Yes you can. My neighbor and his oldest son have to wear long sleeves and a hat while outside.

Maybe get checked by a Doctor. I gave this but I have psoriatic arthritis and IBS. That causes that also.

Yes. My mom is allergic to the sun and if she’s in it too long she breaks out in itchy red splotches all over her chest. She just makes sure she takes breaks from the sun by sitting in the shade a while and keeps up on reapplying sunblock.
Could be sun poisoning or as others have stated there are a lot of medications that make you over sensitive to the sun.

Yes it’s called a sun allergy… I have it… The first few weeks of summer I have to acclimate to the sun and make sure to moisturize plenty and hydrate plenty… If necessary get some anti itch cream or hydrocortisone… Some people have it severe but if it’s mild it’s manageable
My bf is allergic to the sun and he gets blister like sores.

I do get this however I am a redhead and my skin has always been sensitive to the sun also On meds that specify state to stay out of direct sunlight I wear a sunhat often.
Yes, called photosensitivity. I have it. Classic markers are that you have the itchy rash on arms, face, chest typically, and gets better as you get more exposure each summer

Yep. My mom has discoid lupus and is allergic to the sun. Gets sore and stuff if she’s out for too long in it
Yes. I have it badly. I either get hives or look like this after 30 minutes. It can last for weeks and it itches and burns

Yes one of my old friends were and so are her kids.
Yes…my daughter used to get a “rash” on her arms every year around April… finally figured is the from the sun. It lasted about 3 wks then she was fine.

Yes, I have an allergy to the sun. If I’m exposed to long, I get rash like bumps that turn into little blisters. My doctor prescribes me cream, and I have to try to stay as covered up as I possibly can/take with the heat.
People with lupus can’t be out in the sun.

Solar urticaria is a rare allergic reaction to sun exposure. The condition causes an itchy rash or hives that appear on any skin that has been exposed to the sun. The more skin that is exposed to sunlight, the more serious the reaction will be. There is no cure for solar urticaria.

I have lupus and I can’t be out in the sun. I get itchy spots that turn into whelts when I scratch them my skin gets really red and hot and I get sick

Yes you can be, I am, if I’m out in it to long I get a rash, red and itchy( not a sunburn) Doctor said avoid the sun as much as possible
It is possible. My dad was, I have problems and my youngest son had problems. Itchy splotches. Dad was a redhead. I have very fair skin tone as did my son.
Yes very possible. I’m allergic to the sun/UV rayd and break out in huge hives. I also broke out in huge hives when I tried tanning in the past.
Yup entirely possible. There’s also some medications that can make you more sensitive to the sun as well. My birth control does.

Thyroid issues cause the exact same reaction to the sun. I’ve been dealing with it for years and it su©k$
I would check any medication you are on or even supplements. If this is new to you it could be from those

Yes lupus can cause it. You can also be allergic to your own sweat which my son is and he gets spots all over from it

Yup. I break out in a horrible rash almost every time I’m in the sun more then a cpl hours. I’m not on any medication either.

Yes. I get sun poisoning from the sun. My doctor told me I am allergic to the sun light, unfortunately I am also allergic to sunscreen. Yay me!

Yes, it’s called solar urticaria and my oldest is diagnosed with that along with cold urticaria. Extreme temperatures can cause head to toe hives and severe allergy symptoms including anaphylaxis

I’m allergic to the sun. I also have Lupus. I didn’t start having symptoms of being allergic till I was 28. Rashes, hives, headache, vomiting, fatigue. If I was in it longer than like an hour I would literally feel like I had sun poisoning.

Yes it is. My sister & one of her boys are extremely allergic to the sun.
It looks completely different than sun poisoning so ppl saying that no. I break out on a rash/hives from only being in the sun for an hour. Exactly what Melissa Cote said. I put hydrocortisone on mine bc they itch so badly.

Yes! It’s an allergy and it SUCKS! Doesn’t matter if you put sunscreen on or not, you’ll still get it every time! I have it and any time I spend out in the sun I get super itchy with bumps allll over my skin where the sun touched it. Benadryl cream helps with the itching!

Yes it is absolutely possible to be allergic to the sun, which is different than sun poisoning.

My daughter breaks out into hives when she is in the sun and humidity. Its gotten better as she’s aged. Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream.
My uncle was allergic to the sun and loved to golf. He always had to be in pants and a long sleeve shirt and hat. I do not remeber his symptoms bc he was my great uncle so I was really young when he was alive and dont remember
ETA, sometimes me and my daughter will get a heat rash from sweat and humidity, small clusters of little bumps, they itch sometimes too but it goes away for us and is only present as the weather goes from cold, to hot and humid here in Oklahoma

I have a reaction to sun at the beach and on into South Florida. It is a real thing with me. I never go to the beach in summer time or ride in a car with sun coming through windshield. I just stay away for this started 50yrs ago.

There is a huge difference between being sensitive to the sun and being allergic to it. It sounds as though you are sun-sensitive which as others have noted, could be brought on by various medications. Interestingly, some foods, notably celery can also make you sensitive to the sun.

Yes definitely! My daughter has blonde hair and fair skin. She gets white circles on her skin and sometimes big red blotches. She uses sun screen and it still happens.
I get hives every year in the late spring and beginning of summer, especially doing yard work. I’ve had sun poisoning 2x and Due to some medications, my skin gets the hives/irritated from being in the sun.

Yes it is possible. I am allergic to the sun as well it staryed with my first pregnancy in 1993. Everywhere the sun hits me I ger hives sunscreen makes it worse. Was tested for lupis but that was negative. I used to live in the sun getting tanned quickly never burning. Now 10 minutes is 2 days of itching and taking double or triple doses of allergy medicine.
