My 13 year old struggles to sleep

I have a 13 year old daughter that has trouble sleeping. I’m am aware it’s her hormones but she’s really grumpy with lack of sleep. She’s normally so happy. Has anyone tried and tested natural remedies (like vitamins) that really help? We’ve tried all the usual ones like exercise and hot drinks and baths. She is using lavender pillow spray but It doesn’t seem to be working anymore. TIA xx

Perhaps try melatonin

Have you tried sleepytime tea? It helps my 11 yr old.

I would really try melatonin. Do it for a while, like 6 weeks and then take her off. They have 1mg gummies.

Melatonin, if that doesn’t work take the child to a pcp and they can prescribe something small to help.

Pharmaceutical grade magnesium!!

Maybe figure out what’s going on in her head that’s got her feeling like she can’t sleep. Might be anxious about something especially if it’s new

My son literally has had sleeping issues since he was a baby, now 21 he takes melatonin at night to sleep. It’s almost as if he was born with nights and days mixed up

I use Melatonin for my sons who sometimes suffer from lack of sleep. It always does the trick to get them back ton schedule so its not needed every night.

Take her to the doctor to rule out any medical issues

Lavender incense, sleepy time tea, melatonin

I would say to try melatonin but not supposed to use long term. I’ve been taking benadryl since my teen years and it has helped me sleep.

We homeschool, so for us we just went with the sleep schedule that works for her. She is at her best when she stays up until about 10-11, and I let her sleep until about 9:30-10 sometimes later if she needs it.

Magnesium about 30 minutes before bed. Take a few days before it really works for me, but it helps.

Try melatonin supplement. It helped me. I’m not taking them anymore though. I don’t want to depend on them anymore, thankfully i can sleep on my own now.

Try working out a relaxing bedtime routine designed to help her relax and get drowsy. Have her turn off electronics at least 30 minutes to an hour before she tries going to sleep.

Believe it or not, eating a bowl of starchy cereal, like cornflakes or rice crispies, about an hour before bedtime, can help someone relax for bed. It helps release serotonin which aids in the natural production of melatonin.

Soft music and hot tea are also things that might help.

Melatonin but in small doses. I would try .5mg to start. Melatonin doesn’t work for our teen. It gets him to sleep but doesn’t keep him asleep. Head to your PCP if the melatonin doesn’t work. They may suggest a sleep study before meds. It’s also worth mentioning, teens don’t release natural melatonin until sometime around 11pm-12am. Poor things’ bodies are changing and they can’t sleep.

I used melatonin it helps my kids a lot. Their both adhd so hard for them to sleep also.

She might be deficient in something. My 12 year old daughter was having the same problem & we found out by having a blood test done that her Vitamin D & Iron levels were very low. We’ve started her on the D3 & Iron supplements & it has made a positive change for her mood & sleep schedule.

Melatonin. I take one kids melatonin and i usually only need it 2-3 nights and it seems to help kind of reset my sleep patterns. You can also have her eat more melatonin rich foods, my go to is sunflower seeds.

Yes turn electronics off an hour before bed. At 14 I also had a hard time sleeping. That’s when my grandmother taught me how to play crib. We would play a couple rounds while we drank Sleepy-Time Tea. It works wonders. I still drink that tea today. You an get sleepy time tea at any of your grocery stores. It’s a greenis yellow box with a sleepy bear on it.

Try seeing a sleep specialist… There could be something go on that they can help with.

Bedtime tea and melatonin

Magnesium is amazing
Rub on her feet nightly

Either she can’t sleep or she’s on her phone in the middle of the night my ex had that problem with his daughter

Melatonin saved my life working a 4:30 -2:30 shift about 3yrs ago for 2yrs. I still take it today but I’m no longer doing that nanny job. It doesn’t force you to sleep but help you get to sleep and it’s natural. Already in our bodies, but not enough for a lot of people.

Melatonin & active during the day

I swear by traditional medicinals nighty night teas, that’s what my mom used to give me. I have ADHD and I struggle bad to sleep at night because my brain just can’t be turned off lol and they really do help and are delicious. You can buy them on Amazon.

Try melatonin… that will definitely work and it’s basically a vitamin!

Ask her pediatrician about melatonin. Also, does she snore? If so, discuss this with her pediatrician. This indicates obstructive sleep apnea, which is usually treated in kids by removing the tonsils and adenoids.

Melatonin and a weighted blanket in a dark room :white_heart: My 13yr old takes the Melatonin only night where she has trouble getting to sleep and only takes 3mg. She sleeps so well now!!

We do Benadryl and melatonin for my 13year old son. Not all the time of course but on days he needs to sleep. I also don’t push it at all, he asks for it

Those Dr Teals Epson salt baths really help to relax and go to sleep. They smell sooo good.

I use Melatonin for my son when he has trouble sleeping. Dr said it was perfectly fine for occasional use. He takes it 2-3 times a week. 5 mgs is what his Dr said he could take. Ask your child’s Dr for an appropriate dose.

Hopefully you have taken measures to eliminate stimulants in her activity before bed such as TV, cellphone, certain food consumption like sugar and salt intake. Just an FYI some bottled water products have sodium in it that can effect sleep. Cellphones and video games can be the biggest culprit

Have you tried a weighted blanket?

Melatonin she can take it and it will help her sleep pattern return, sometimes after that you can stop and only take during difficult sleep times

Melatonin works for my daughter

As a youth… I just ran myself into the ground and crashed for a few days… not the healthiest plan. My sleep changed dramatically after regular hot yoga. (Which turned to not hot yoga in times where it wasn’t feasible. ) the physical actions loosened the body up but the breathing was the key to resting. Once you can successfully rest… you can sleep.

I heard melatonin was causing issues in kids I can’t recall what I wouldn’t use it unless recommended by a dr.

We use melatonin and a weighted blanket for my youngest 2. The older 2 have more severe sleep problems so their meds are prescribed by a doctor

They have over the counter natural remedies but please always ask your doctor or pharmacist first

She is plenty old enough to use Melatonin. My boy’s are 12-13. They have been in Clonidine and Melatonin together for years. Because they both won’t sleep at all, without both! It work’s like a charm. They sleep all night. And never had any issues with taking the meds.

Melatonin or CBD oil (no THC).

Decrease electronic time, increase physical activity, reading before bed time, and lay down at an earlier time if it takes her longer to fall asleep.

I stopped giving my daughter Melatonin because it delays puberty in kids.

Trazodone lol insomnia sucks

It can be a symptom of ADD/ADHD also.

Goli Ashwagandha gummies have been an absolute life saver for me. Sleepy time tea is good too. Children’s melatonin works great too for kids. Don’t want to use Melatonin all the time tho

Both of my grandsons had trouble sleeping but melintonin did not help.

Does she have a certain bedtime

Have her meditate. Don’t use melatonin, it’s not ok even tho many say it’s safe. Teacher her how to relax through meditation

CBD, .05 per pound of the kids weight was recommended by my Dr. My kids have bad reactions to melatonin and wake up with night terrors. But ask a Dr. My 8 year old is Add, ADHD, ODD and a few others and it works for him during the day as well…

We have a rule that the phones go on the kitchen counter at 8pm. My 13 year old is allowed tv only after 8 and she’s usually asleep by 9-9:30.

I use melatonin. It’s all natural and helps my mind rest so I can. They sell them in gummy form also which my grandson takes.

May need to get her tested for sleep apnea.

You could try getting her a cheap diffuser and some lavender oil in her bedroom. I got my set up for about 20 bucks. Chamomile tea bag and lavender oil added to the bath may help. I don’t like the taste of the sleepy teas, a lot of kids won’t either…but I add them to a bath and soak, then shower off.

melatonin is a great great thing lol

l get paid over $125 per hour working from home. l never thought I’d be able to do it but my buddy makes over $21814 a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The possibility with this is endless.

Melatonin is what our doctor recommended my daughter’s brain doesn’t shut down and she can’t fall asleep

How about melatonin low dose to start? And a roller ball Of lavender and roll on toes before bedtime.

Melatonin its all natural

melatonin should only be given to children on advice of a medical dr. as it can cause mental delay in children. (per my Dr.)

Try a sleep study if you can. My parents blamed me for my issues sleeping and all the changes that were supposed to help felt like punishments. I was in college when I finally got a sleep study done and found out I have narcolepsy. Best thing that ever happened to me, because now I have a way to regulate my days and actually get a healthy amount of sleep

We used melatonin for my granddaughter. She had trouble falling asleep. Worked wonders for her.

I always had problems sleeping at night (I’m a night owl). My mom put me on sleeping pills, which did make me sleep all night but also through the first four hours of school. I never grew out of it. I’ve learned that second shift works best for me because I rarely hear my alarms go off or I turn them off and don’t remember doing it. Melatonin gives me the craziest dreams so I end up sleeping restlessly. The only thing that worked for me was exercise before bed but not like cardio but like yoga and pilates. Then I’d shower and I could usually go to sleep…unless I decided to watch TV or read a book…then I’d still be up all night.

How about a visit to the doctor get some blood work done and go from there…

Her body isn’t producing enough melatonin. My 16 and 14 year olds go through this. It’s ok to give them melatonin, our bodies naturally produce it. Talk with the doctor about the dosage.

My soon to be 11 year old was the same way and we tried all natural and over the counter sleep remedies and nothing worked melatonin it gave him nightmare and caused him to sleep walk even just a small dose, his doctor put him on medication to help him sleep and we have had no issues since, he’s been on the doctors medication for Almont 2 years now with no issues and very restful sleep

Melatonin, Warm. Milk,. ? I. Play. Classical. Music on. a. Clock. Radio

how late is she using her phone? maybe cut it off two hours before bedtime. Same with tv and electronics.

Melatonin is natural. I’ve been to sleep specialists that recommended melatonin. Our body makes it naturally.

White noise like a fan in bedroom works as well

This might be something to consider I went to the eye Dr and I learned that my eyes don’t close all the way when I sleep. So I put eyedrops in my eyes. A lot of people have problems getting to the REM cycle. Try lavender, sleepy teas, they say melatonin but if you get to much might not be good. Have something to calm her to relax and try eye drops. I think not a bad idea to take her to Dr.

Melatonin should help.

my son has to use melotonin. we started at 5mg, and he is on 10 mg. We make sure he gets about 10 hours of sleep because according to everything I have read, since they are still growing they need plenty of sleep…

Calm drink. It is magnesium but can cause sleepiness before bed and feeling refreshed in 5he morning. Also very healthy for you.

Have you tried giving her melatonin if not I’d try giving her melatonin and it should help

Those bedtime baby lotions, tell her to put it on her face and rub it on her feet. Sounds stupid, but it definetly puts me to sleep and relaxes me! Lol
And lots of sunshine and fresh air during the day

And you can buy a body wash called dreamy skin from Johnson’s and it works so good and will relax her and make her sleepy, and a warm Milo before bed. Good luck mumma!

Melatonin. Best you can do without a prescription. Make the prescription route your last option because they’re strong. I took them at 23 and couldn’t handle how groggy I felt throughout the day. She’s 10 years younger than that so they’re going to hit her HARD

Leave the girl to change slowly other than making her get used to sleep while on prescription, some of us sleep at 3am and wake up early and be more awake and normal than those who slept before 10pm

You might Melatonin. It’s safe and effective. My daughter uses children’s doses when her kids can’t sleep. I use it myself.

Try a sleep study and see if it’s any underlying causes. Stop all electronics one hour before bed. Look up Dan Jones sleep stories on YouTube. I’ve used them and they have work. I suggested them for my 15 year old nephew and he think they work wonderfully for him.

Is she eating too late…especially carbs or high sugar foods! Makes a big difference with my family

Assuming no stress or medical issues- Does she have access to electronics after bedtime? Access to friends? Texts? Boys? Social media of any kind? I’ve been down this road. Kids are sneaky lil fellers and need structure and boundaries. They have a hard time shutting their social world down to rest. When absolutley NECESSARY I have given my kids melatonin. Like toddlers, teens need to learn how to self soothe to sleep. (Something far fetched but some teens sneak out at night and yes even at 13).
