My baby always chokes when he drinks from a bottle: Advice?

Hi ladies. I have a three-week old baby, and he gets strangled on his bottle all the time. I use slow flow nipples I hold him upright, and he still gets strangled. I panic because he starts coughing and then holds his breath. I’m so scared of it getting in his lungs. Anyone else has issues like this with their baby? Also, he randomly gasps for air while eating and sleeping and scares me to death. Please, someone, tell me it’s normal. I’m going crazy with worry.

Bottle is probably dripping too fast buy a smaller nipple and prop him up more

Try using preemie nipples.

Acid reflux! Our daughter had all these symptoms and it was acid reflux

Talk to your pediatrician. This could be an issue with the swallowing reflex.

Talk to your babys doctor, they may know what’s wrong.

I breastfed but my babies would get choked from time to time. A lot of it is they have to get the sucking/breathing timing down.

It’s normal! As long as your watching your baby while hes eating he will be ok.

My niece had this problem as a baby and ended up with speach problems because it was Apraxia.

See the pediatrician!

Get a size 0 nipple for your bottle. I use Tommie Tippee extra slow flow

Try slow flow nipples

When my daughter was in the nicu the nurses told me to actually try and tilt them on their side while feeding instead of sitting straight up

My little sister, she ended up having extra Webb she had to get surgery

Take him to see his doctor. It could be nothing serious or it could be something that needs to be addressed. Safer just to see the pediatrician.

Maybe try breastfeeding. Talk to someone at LaLeche group or breastfeeding group in your area about how to improve your breastmilk production so you can do breastfeeding. It is far more natural.

Try a preemie nipple.

He needs a swallow study asap. He might be aspirating. Do not let this go. Keep after his doctor until he gets one.

More than likely he will put grow this in the next couple of weeks. But wouldn’t hurt to bring it up at the next visit to the pediatrician

Preemie nipples and talk to the doctor

Check for a tongue tie. Talk to doctor don’t wait

I would consult baby Dr it could be nothing but could be something if happens constantly

My kiddo is 3 months and still does this… I lay her on her side to feed her. It helps. Idk if it would be the same for your little tho. But within doubt call the doctor

We had the same issue, until we bought the kiinde bottle system!

Talk to pediatrician and use premier nipples

Is his bottle nipple too fast for him? Make sure it’s a zero flow nipple… sometimes they sell the bottles already with a size 1 flow…it was too fast for my kids …I had to buy zero ones separately

My son would aspirate his bottles so we had to thicken it with rice!

He a has apnea go to the Dr. NOW!

Had the same issue with our youngest at first. She just had to learn how to breathe and drink at the same time. We had to just prop her up and pace her. After a few sips she got the bottle taken from her for a moment so she could breathe. She’s now almost three months and we don’t have that issue anymore. Good luck though. Every baby is different. But don’t stress. If you’re worried take the little one to the doctor. They may suggest a type of bottle or feeding position. Or check to see if something is actually wrong.

Check the nipple flow on the bottle also.

It could be reflux or it could be nothing. I would take him to the doctor. My niece had a hole in her trachea when she was born and would constantly choke, she would stoo breathing sometimes and it was super scary. So I would definitely voice your concern to your doc if not just for peace of mind

Since the baby is still only a few weeks old you could consider switching your method to breast feeding if you would like to try that. No pressure. You wouldn’t have the bottle issue anymore. Try not to worry, but do talk to your doctor.

Talk to the doc. Baby may need additional additives or could be reflux

My daughter is about to be 4 months. She used to do that and it would worry me at first. She eventually stopped doing it at about 2 months. I’d just take the bottle out her mouth and let her catch her breath then give it back until she was full. Her pediatrician wasn’t concerned at all. She has seen it many times in newborns.

Idk about the choking, but my son gasped for air on occasion sleeping as a newborn and through early infancy. He has outgrown it now, he’s 6 months.

Get your baby checked is he aspirating which is as he drinks fluids can be entering the lung my son did as a baby and was also like ur son when bottle fed. He was also treated as he got older for a severe asmathic but but was all down to aspirating .

Bring your baby to the doc and tell him your concerns

Please take baby to the doctor as soon as possible or he may aspirate and become very poorly.

Newborns are so scary. Especially, the first. So many panic attacks.

Use preemie nipples feed on the side and make an appointment with the dr to check for a tounge tie :blush:

You need to have him seen by the pediatrician. There could be several reasons why this happens, some are minor and some are concerning. No one can give you any valid advice except, be seen by the pediatrician.

Explain it to your pediatrician, I once nanied a baby who did this much worse than other babies, (because a little bit is normal) and the baby got lung infections, so the pediatrician gave this special powder to mix into the bottles so that it was thicker and more gel like. The formula then didnt come out as fast and the baby could handle it, and it wasnt adding stuff like rice to the newborns bottle (which newborns cant digest properly)

My little sister had this as a child and the doctors found a small hole in her bronchial tube

My son did this a bit when he was younger, he has GERD. All babies are different though, so don’t hesitate to take your little one to see the doctor if you’re that concerned. Best of luck

Let doc know and ask to see a speech therapist for feeding. They can give you techniques to help baby coordinate “suck, swallow, breathe” better.

Sounds like maybe could try a smaller hole in nipple .

This is my post. He has been to the dr and diagnosed with reflux even before I posted this but I just wanted to see if it was all reflux or something I’m doing. I also had a NICU nurse who is a friend of mine come over to see him. His lungs are clear and she says its mainly the nipples I’m using and he eats to fast. Also it’s not every bottle and not even everyday that he gets strangled. Some days more than others but I also can blame the size nipples. I thank those who gave me kind answers and defended me in those who just said I need to breastfeed.

I had that problem and my pediatrician has me change to dr brown bottles with newborn nipples, it makes them slow down eating and helps with reflux

Use a preemie nipple, not Newborn or 1. Dr Browns has preemie nipples. My boys were 5 weeks preemie but used those nipples from 2weeks to 12 weeks.

This happened to my youngest daughter, we took her to the hospital because I was freaked out. They ended up giving her a premie nipple and the choking stop. Now she’s 3 and I found out she had enlarged adenoids and an upper lip tie… they said this could cause choking. Make sure you mention it to the doc and see if you can get an X-ray done! I wish I have known almost 4 years ago

Look under their tongue. They may have a short lingual frenulum, your dentist or pediatric doctor can recommend an oral surgeon who can clip it or laser it. My daughter had hers clipped at 9 days old.

DEFINITELY ACID REFLUX! Take that baby and get him some Zantac!

I used medela calma teats. The baby has to suck for any milk to come out. It worked great until he was big enough to drink well (about 6 weeks old)

Maybe try a different bottle too, and definitely get an appointment with pediatrician to be safe. Baby may need a different formula as well.

Have your baby checked out by his Dr. A doctor is the only one that can be sure of whats going on. Good luck. Don’t wait - get him in to be checked soon as possible.

My son did this for months. He went to a speech therapist for feeding. But, until then, let him drink a little then take the nipple out and put under the rope lip. That will give him a min to catch his breath. Then when he starts searching again, put back in. Goodluck.

He might have a stopped up nose.

Try a dr brown bottle by little one had the same problem l switched him to dr browns and he was much better

You should be talking to your pediatrician, not Facebook🤢

See the doctor asap. Because she going to end up with infant with bacteria in his lungs. The most important thing is a swallow study, check for tongue issue .
Possible of sleep apnea - my next thought
Cardiologist work up.
See your ped immediately.
Possible the ER. And 3 week infant who cant eat is dangerous

I had a choking baby to. He was bad enough he had to stay nicu for 2 weeks. It’s very scarry. Take him in right away

My son did the same thing when he was that age. His doctor told me that it was completely normal for him to gasp like that. He is a happy, healthy 1 year old now.

If ever in doubt call the pediatrician. It might be a serious problem

Maybe you should all go to the Dr. before something happens to them. Never asking people on FB, go to a professional.

The random gasping for air while sleeping sounds like sleep apnea, it’s dangerous please take him to a pediatrician & if your pediatrician says nothing is wrong without doing any tests, get a second opinion
