My daughter failed her hearing test and we think it was due to wax build up: Thoughts?

My daughter is in kindergarten and failed both hearing tests. She was referred to the audiologist. He determined she has conductive hearing loss in the right and possibly the left. We took her to her pediatrician and holy cow, were they successful in clearing out some serious ear wax build-up!! Now we have an RX for ear drops, along with Flonase. The doctor says he seriously believes the wax build-up is the culprit for her failing her hearing tests after treatment; we’ll reschedule for her to take the tests again. If your kiddos have experienced this, please let me know, is the ear wax build up a recurring issue, or was it just something that needed to be cleaned, and then it’s fine moving forward. The doctor says it’s rare to see it recurring, but I want to know anyone else’s experiences if you’re willing to share. Thank you!!

My son has horrible problem with the ear wax and it is a reoccurring thing and it definitely affects his hearing he has to go every few months to get them cleaned out so yes and answer to your question is that definitely could affect her hearing

My brother went through the same thing. It was the ear wax.

She will need tubes in her ears. My daughter has them. She is currently on her second set

Definitely go back for retesting i literally fought for a year because my daughter failed her test they swore she had no fluid in her ears n she was just at loss of hearing but no explanation on why all of a sudden she failed! They decide to put tubed in n sure enough fluid was trapped in her ear where they couldn’t see!!!

When I was younger, I had to get my ears cleaned alot. My ped recommended that my parents pour warmed up oil into my oil to loosen the wax

My daughter has a lot of wax build up too.We go a few times a year for the doctor to clean them out.Don’t use q-tips.I’d also see about a allergy medicine.

You would think an audiology dept and ENT would have the wherewithal to check for otic obstructions prior to testing hearing. Apparently they failed to do so, resulting in additional charges, probably by design

My youngest had some pretty bad wax build up and it is recurring. I have to take an ear wax scraper and clean his ears out at least once a week to make sure it doesn’t get bad again. Also we put peroxide in his ears at least once a week. Helps so much.

If I dont clean my ears every day then they are so bad. I’ve gotten to where I have to clean them twice a day

Ask about tubes my son had to have them put in at 1 because he kept fluid and wax buildup so bad it caused ear infection

I’ve had wax build up over and over. Once a month I fill my ears with organic olive oil and plug with cotton overnight. It works wonderfully. Its doctor recommended. I haven’t had an issue since and I no longer use Q tips.

Also if you’re not seeing an ENT for testing like this, it’s likely to be faulty.

The audiologist I used to work with wouldn’t test if he saw wax

They may need tubes in the 80s I always had to go have a machine suck out my ear wax. I was around 4. The Dr told my GMA if u didn’t have tubes I would be completely deaf with in a year. So I had tubes. I have lost a lil amount of gear ng in one ear . Nothing to noticable. Lol. I sleep on my good ear. Helps muffle sounds. But if your children have over excessive ear wax build up on a regular basis along with ear infections often. Tubes are the way to go

Id ask for tubes. My 13yr and 9yr just had their tubes removed that they got around 15mo, my 6yr and 5yr just got tubes put in and my 10yr and 8yr have hearing aides bcuz of hearing loss. Goodluck!

Wax continuously builds up but I would think the ENT would of looked in the child’s ears :woman_shrugging:t2:

Well 1st just breathe, it’s not the end of the world. Just take the steps the Dr. advises & if by some chance she’s deaf just remind yourself that when they grow up they don’t really listen to us anyways. Be positive, stay positive, life’s not always easy.

I have ear wax build up. It doesn’t affect my hearing or my kids’ hearing.

My daughter failed her hearing test twice at school so I brought her in and they cleaned her ears out and retested her and she passed.

My daughter actually got temporary hearing loss from a perforation the ear tubes caused. Excess wax absolutely can cause some hearing difficulties, the pediatric ENT Dr. can safely remove all way and get an age appropriate audiologist to perform a special hearing test. I have been through all of this. Feel free to message me if you need any help or support

This happened to me as a child and it continued. Constant, terrible ear infections as well - I ended up needing surgery (tubes in my ears) twice! Then something happened where they had to surgically remove them because they suspected it was causing me to go deaf (tubes fall out on their own naturally)

My almost 5 yr old had tubes put in her ears before she turned 1, I blame her constant ear infections for her speech delay. When her new born hearing test was done we had to go to a specialist bc hospital couldnt get a reading. She missed out on ALL of her developmental hearing stages from new born to 1. She is still a waxy kid who needs to get her ears cleaned every few months.

I have this problem myself. Its reoccurring… Wax usually drains itself out of the ear but sometimes it just cant. I usually use peroxide but when that dont work i have a kit you can get from walmart or a drug store that comes with the syringe to suck out the wax build up and flush it

Does she have tubes already? She will fail. My son has the same problem with excessive ear wax.

my sons audiologist won’t test as well if there is wax buildup cause it will give a faulty reading…I would definitely see what the second reading says now that it’s cleared out and yes it can keep happening. May need tubes if issue doesn’t resolve itself.

,my daughter just had to get tubes because of this issue…and it has helped

I have always had this issue. I need to have the wax washed out about every couple years or so

My mom had to take me when I was in 4th grade. The ear wax build up caused me to fail. They cleaned my ears out and I’ve been good ever since

Get an ear lavage for wax.and use debrox couple times.then as needed😊

When I was in 4th grade I had failed my hearing test miserably. And they put tubes in my ears and it helped

It is a recurring issue with my youngest. He failed the first tests, but it was the audiologist that said it was probably because of wax build up. He was treated and past the tests the second time.

Ive had ear infections my whole life. They arent to bad now but i suffered hearing lose in both my ears after having to have 5 sets of tubes placed in. I also had to go back ever 6 months to get my ears cleaned.

This happened with my oldest (now 9) in Kindergarten as well. She had a huge wax build up in her one ear that caused her to fail the hearing test. Her pediatrician was able to clear it all out and and we were told it was from cleaning her ears with q-tips. She retested not long after and passed! We’ve never used q-tips since, and never had an issue again.

My baby girl had to have tubs in her ears for hers

I have been through this!!! My daughter failed in her right ear. Went to our family dr. they flushed the wax out of that ear, which was ALOT. A hard clump probably acting as a plug. Repeated the hearing test and she PASSED! She gets waxy ears from her Dad so we occasionally use debrox wax softener.

I had 40 surgeries on my ears by the time I was 5 years old. 28 now and wax is a major problem. I’ve had several tubes put in and removed. But the wax for sure can make it very difficult to hear. I periodically still have issues where the wax will build up so much that it blocks hearing completely and won’t return for at least a month even with cleaning it. So just be careful but definitely try to keep the ears as clean as possible to reduce the hearing loss

Wax can cause a hearing loss. If he recommended Flonase, chances are she also has some sinus pressure that could be adding to the problem. As far as the reoccurring wax, it is certainly possible. Ask her doctor if you could use Debrox occasionally.

My daughter used to say “what” a lot. My wife thought it was a hearing issue. Turned out she just wasn’t paying attention to what we were saying.

Seems as though you should just have your daughter get checked again and see if she passes the test?

Idk whats funny about this, but my daughter failed her hearing test simply because she hated the guy doing it lol
But, she has had wax build up issues multiple times. She has had multiple sets of tubes and the wax would get all around it and block it so they would have to go in and clean her ears out.
Just follow what the doctor says and try to find some ways to help prevent it from happening again but don’t stress too much about it.

I am stunned to hear that a doctor said it’s rare to see it recur. It is COMMON to see it recur, some people are prone to it, some ethnic groups have a tendency towards recurrence.

Not children related but my SO recently had a bad ear infection that resulted in almost 80% hearing loss due to wax buildup so its definately possible he says he gets them at least every other year or so according to his doctor its because his ear canal isnt draining wax and mucus build up from the nose properly

It is definitely a reoccurring issue. Im 29 and my primary care doctor told me some people just produce more than others. I’ve had my ears cleaned out by and ENT after I had wax become impacted against my ear drum and holy cow I could hear soooooo much better

It definitely could be. I get alot of wax in my ears and it makes it incredibly hard to hear sometimes

My son struggled with earwax build up that slowly affected his hearing causing him to fall behind in school. Keep her ears clean. We had to do monthly dr visits to dig out the wax nothing else worked. Make sure your child has a front row seat in class so she won’t have trouble hearing the assignments and lessons as the wax builds up. Dont let her fall behind.

My niece has bad wax build up. We clean her ears atleast every 2 weeks. After we clean her ears she can hear soo much better.

My mon could not hear and ended up getting hearing aids. She went to an ent for something else and he cleaned out her ears which were full of wax and now she does not have a problem hearing.

I take my kids to the ear doctor every six months to clean ear wax out.

Our daughter had 6 ear tests with an ENT including in the sound room and they told us she would be deaf unless we did something. Well we decided for a second opinion and the first thing that doc asked was did they clean her ears before the hearing test? I said nope. So he cleaned out her ears and well her hearing test was fine. That was 10 years ago and she has no problems.

Sweet oil ! Found in the ear care aisles of Walmart It is made to gentle soften ear wax ! It comes out on its own after softened ! I use it on my kids and my ex husband when he had hard wax jammed in his ears .

I’m a nurse and and primary care office that sees pediatrics. I clean ears out at least twice A-day. Some people are just natural waxmakers. You can talk to your doctor about this but the doctor I work for recommends patients putting and just a little bit of Olive oil into their ear once a week to keep the wax under control. And it could be a reason that she failed her hearing tests

As long as you keep up cleaning her ears. I remember several times as a kid I would need ear drops to help loosen the wax in my ears. Also look for a ear cleaner that is kind of more like a scoop. Actually scoop the wax out because from what doctors have told me, Q-Tips really only push wax further into the ear. Good luck with her hearing test!

As a child I had to get my ears routinely cleaned due to wax build up that caused me not to hear correctly. The shape of my inner ear canal made it easy for wax to clog. I would go in approximately every 6 months.

My son always failed those hearing tests where you look in the direction the sound is coming from. There is a test that can be done where they sedate the child and use electrodes to record the brain’s response to sound.

My daughter had hearing loss due to wax build up. Combined with a history of frequent ear infections her ENT recommended tubes, best decision I made was getting them placed

When I was younger I produced more ear wax than normal like how some people just sweat more than others. It did impact my hearing if I didnt remember to clean my ears every day (for a 6 year old that was a big job😂) but I eventually grew out of it. Like I obviously still clean my ears but once I hit puberty I noticed a lot less ear wax

My son has to go through wax removal about once a year. Even with prescription ear drops. It affects his hearing pretty bad when it builds up alot. Hes 24 now and it started out in grade school

My husband has to get his ears blown out yearly.

But we’ve noticed that the more often we Dow peroxide in his ears, the less often he gets his ears blown out. Of course always check with ur doctor first :two_hearts:

Ear candle! Then try again!

My 3 year old had to be put under when she was 2 cause she had so much wax and it was so hard they couldn’t do it in office and she’s has to have it done again in March cause she makes so much wax that even the ear drops don’t help, but this is a common problem on my husband side and sadly it’s looking like my youngest is having the same issues since she’s almost two and still not talking

My daughter was one when we found out that she couldn’t hear either lol we got tubes put in due to water sitting behind the ear drum. She got tubes put in and all better!

My daughter had to be put under anesthesia when she was 1 1/2 years old to clean out the wax buildup. She is 8 now, We’ve not had another problem since and her health significantly improved after.

My son has this problem. He has had so much wax built up in his ears that they had to put him under to get it all out because it was impacted. Hes had to do that twice and each time they have to put tubes in his ears because there was fluid behind the ear wax that needed to drain. This problem has put him so far behind in school and he keeps failing his hearing tests because of it. They tell me not to put anything in his ears because of the tubes so Im at a loss on what to do. We have an appointment to see a different audiologist in February so hopefully they can figure something out.
