My daughter has a tongue tie: Advice?

My daughter is just over 2 months old. She’s been struggling lately with breast and bottle. I just discovered she is lip tied. Can and should it be fixed at this age? Will she outgrow it?

Seek a pediatric dentist

Have it revised. You’ll just need to see a pediatric dentist. They’ll release it with a laser.

Do you have a picture?

My son had surgery at the age of 4 for this. Super simple, hardly any pain at all. It made everything so much better and easier for him. I’d recommend it.

Simple surgery. My daughters tongue was clipped at 3 days old, her tie was affecting her eating also.

Take her to the pediatrician

Won’t outgrow it- my husband is tongue tied. Doesn’t effect him at all now

Sometimes speech therapists can help

You also have the option not to fix it, all 4 of my kids have it and they are fine, make sure it’s your choice and not their doctors

They will have to decide if it’s necessary, so if she is struggling to eat then yes definitely do the surgery. My son’s is pretty bad, but since he was still able to bottle feed they didn’t do anything about it and he’s 4 now. I assume when he loses his front teeth they will have to cut it so his adult teeth don’t grow in gapped or crooked

Both of my sons had a frenotomy done at ENT office. Quick snip of frenulum.

Oral surgeon. The earlier it’s done the faster they recover. Super fast easy. My lil had it done. It’s an office procedure

More than likely won’t outgrow it. My son had lip and tongue done at 3
Weeks old and it’s made a ton of difference!

my daughter had a tongue and lip tie. we fixed her tongue tie when she was an itty baby but didn’t think the lip was necessary since nursing after the tongue tie was going well… then she started eating solids and food would get stuck up there and cleaning it sucked! she we had to get it revised. i would do it while she is little cause the healing sucked since she was eating food and it just liquids.

My son had a tongue tie. They wouldn’t fix it at the hospital so I had to take him to a specialist. They said that he could out grow it but he would stutter the rest of his life. I made them fix it at 5 months. Now he can nurse just fine

The earlier it is addressed and fixed, if needed, the less it will affect them. My niece had her tongue clipped at 2 and has no recollection of it.

We had our grandsons fixed at the local children’s hospital when he was 6 months old… He was a premie and the specialist wouldn’t sedate him till he gained some weight… Took litteraly all of 10 mins…we went home with in an hour and he was perfectly fine and happy

My eldest had a tongue tie, had it snipped at 3 weeks old, cried for 3 seconds, had a bottle and was fine. No speech impediments at all

My son had a lip tie breastfeed 9 months. I had to try different feeding positions. Football hold worked good. He is a little over one and it’s almost not noticeable anymore. And is saying words well for his age. Pediatrician definitely will guide in the right direction if you can’t make comfortable for both at home.

My daughter has a lip tie, different from tongue but speech therapist did tell me , with tongue if you want when there older it cause speech issues. If they learn to talk, have it done, they basically have to learn to talk again, NOT IN ALL CASES. Were having a hard time switching my 10 month to a cup!

I’m tongue tied as is my sister. Mom was but they clipped hers in her 30s. It hasn’t really affected us. No speech impediments or anything. However, if there are feeding issues it’s worth a consult for pros and cons.

My son is very tongue tied but it never affected anything his pedi watched it and since it didnt affect anything we left it alone. He has asthma and food allergies we didnt want to put him through more. Now my daughter is tongue and lip tied. It affected her nursing but not bottle so we are watching her for speech. Most of the time it stretches was what i was told. But if it affects things i would do something about it. Your baby needs to eat and be comfortable. I heard it can cause gas issues from not properly latching. You trust your gut mama you know whats best.

My son could never breast feed bc of a lip tie they missed. I didn’t notice till after he was 1 how bad it was and by that time they said it wasn’t interfering with his teeth or anything so it was fine. He has no issues with it now and it hasn’t been corrected.

For what it’s worth, I had to get my son’s tongue clipped at 5 days old. He wasn’t latching and was barely eating so it was a necessity. It was traumatic for me to hold him while they did it and then he bled but it solved the problem.

See your pediatrician and go over your concerns.

My son was tongue tied. Got snipped around 5 weeks. Doesn’t remember a thing😂

Yes it should definitely be fixed if you’re noticing issues with breastfeeding. My son had to have his snipped and it was a night and day difference, now we’re at 9 months of breastfeeding.

Fix it don’t let her struggle

Im learning so much today! I never knew this was an actual thing!

Both of my daughters have/had a lip tie. My 8 year old got hers lazored lasy year and my 2.5 year old will wait awhile too

My son had his clipped in the hospital, his dad was also tongue tied and they didn’t clip his until he was 4 years old. Do it now so she doesn’t remember and doesn’t continue to struggle.

Both my kids. They snipped it while I was in hospital both times. Mine was clipped when I was 10…i didn’t really have any problems just couldn’t do a taco with my tounge lol

Go to a good doctor. Yes fix it when he/she says. It will effect her speech and language development.

She will not outgrow it. Needs to be snipped ASAP

My child was lip tied… I didn’t get it cut bc it’s something they grow out of more often then not…its a Lil more work but it’s puts the child though less pain and you’re not gonna spend the extra 200 to 500 on getting it cut…

My son had tongue tie, they clipped it & since they did, his vocab massively expanded. He did better with eating. If youre noticing its effecting eating &such, its definitely worth consulting the dr over.

Both my boys were severely tongue tied with one being lip tied as well. We did not correct. Both managed to breastfeed successfully until around 18 months. Oldest (now 11 years) is still tongue tied but never had a single speech problem. Youngest (now 3 years) managed to split his lip tie during toddler years with a fall. Bled for a few minutes, gave him a Freezie and he was over it. Again, no speech issues at all. Had to work harder to get a proper latch early on (compared to my one kid with no ties) but small issue in my opinion.

We also live in Canada where the procedure would have been 100% free, so cost was not an issue. Just considered in un-necessary.

Fix it. I think it is best to do it young I had my daughters lip and tongue done at 5 weeks old. I have seen older kids get it done and they fight with the exercises and stretches you do afterwards. It is not something they can out grow.

Seek a pediatric dentist, it’s easier to do it at a very young age, your baby will eat better and won’t have speech delays or the need for speech therapy if you do it soon. You need to check with the surgeon and anesthesiologist, the baby needs to have a certain weight to have general anesthesia, they may recommend sedation, you don’t want the baby moving even for a quick procedure. Good luck!

Have a dr. check it. SOON.

My son had both a lip and tongue tie, he got the frenectomies done around 6 months old and it was awful. Get it done sooner rather than later. It was a success howevee.

It hurts now and is hard to eat/suck. It will also delay her speech and affect her teeth later if not fixed. It should be fixed ASAP.

My son was born with a tongue and upper lip tie. He had trouble eating so his was clipped by a dentist at 3 days old…

My son was four months old when he had it cut. He had to go in and was put under to do it. It’s was out patient surgery.
That was also 19 years ago so maybe it’s different now.

Lip or tongue?? 2 completely different things. Tongue will effect eating, lip they dont worry about til they are older, if at all. Mg daughter had both and we had them both lasered at 1 just because we figured while she was doing the tongue might as well do the lip. We dodnt know she had one til she was a year old and I struggled terribly with breastfeeding but was still able too. Mg advice is get it done now. Dont wait. It was traumatizing for me to see her have it done at a year old vs if I did it as an infant

Yes and do it now. If you wait until after a year, then she will need general anesthesia instead of just numbing.

They fixed my
Daughters lip and tongue. They had to. She wasn’t gaining weight cuz she couldn’t latch right. The tongue is easy. They just use a local antisthetic and snip it. The lip is harsh though. Local antisthetic and they burn it. It was done by a pediatric dentist. Or topical antisthetic may be the right term. Just the numbing stuff.

Fix it can cause airway problems!

My son was 2 months old and had his they did it at the dr visit really quick tiny amount of crying and no bleeding eating right away

My granddaughter had both, she brought her to a pediatric dentist, literally 10 seconds after they lasered the lip and tongue ties she was a different infant,

Get it checked out now. My littlest granddaughter just had both done with laser at almost 3 months. Her siblings had tongue done also at an earlier age by clipping.

My son out grew his. Just follow the advice of your pediatrician.

Fix it immediately! It will make life so much easier! My baby boy was born with one. Its a fast and simple procedure when they are so little.

I was tongue tied. It was cut asap as a baby. Just a small snip at the pediatrician

Needs to be fixed. That’s what’s causing issues.

Had 3 kids born the same way. Got it snipped by an ENT quick and simple.

I have a tounge tie. I have extreme food aversions and have trouble talking sometimes. Im also insecure about it. I didnt even know it was a thing till i found out my son had one. We both got ours revised but they only cut mine a small amount.

It needs to be checked out now.

My daughter had hers done when she was 1 week old it was 85% tongue tie. I recommend it to be done early and ASAP as it will heal quicker and won’t affect there speech. It isn’t nice at all it upset me so much but after it was done we had lots of cuddles and by the next day she was feeding normal and it was 100% better.

I wish i had mine done as a baby my brothers were all tongue tied and they were donebut i wasnt very hard as a kid dentist telling me to stickk my tongue out and couldnt split my sides of my mouth trying to get me to stick it out so get it done when little

Bring it up to your pediatrician. They’ll recommend an ENT to do it. My son was the same way and he’s 6 now with no issues.

My 4th had top lip and tongue ties. He was barely able to latch on my left breast and my supply was dropping. We had a laser frenectomy done when he was 4weeks old.

It took maybe 5 mins from start to finish and he was fussy and sleepy for a day. The difference between his eating is night and day.

The “most stressful” part was getting up every four hours to the massaging and stretching to keep the frenulum from reattaching. But by his 1 week check up he was pretty much healed

Best thing we ever did as some ties can cause damage into childhood and have to be clipped/lasered anyways.

I was born that way and didn’t get it fixed till I was older and had speech problems because of it. Go to your dentist and have it fixed. If its real bad you’d have to see a medical doctor.

Fix it asap. Earlier the better. My daughter had this done and it was nbd. My husband got his done when he was 30 and it was a much bigger deal.

No surgery is simple at that age, usually earlier. Better if you get it done though.

I would get it fixed, especially if she is having difficulty eating. It’s better to do younger they heal faster and get over it faster.

Painful! Get to an ENT ASAP. They will get it fixed.

Lip or tongue? My youngest has/had both. I found out as an adult I had a tongue tie (I had years of speech therapy when I was young) but I took my li in for a lip tie and we decided it was best to leave the lip tie but he was concerned with the tongue tie so we corrected it

Ask your pediatrician who will refer you to a surgeon

My lil one was born with it and had an op at just 1 year old and is fine now. Op took less than half an hour and she was back to herself in an hour or so

My daughter had the upper and lower. It’s a simple simple procedure that takes a minute. It’s very worth it

My son had a tongue and lip tie and we got it cut when he was 3yrs old as it was causing him trouble with his speech, definitely not to late to get it cut!

The earlier the better , see an ent

My daughter had lip and tongue tie. She struggled to breast feed. She was two weeks old and I took her to a pediatric dentist who specialized in laser surgery. She brought her to the back and it took less than 10 minutes to laser it and she never even cried. After a few days of lip and tongue exercises and a very short healing process she was breast feeding like a champ! I highly suggest getting it done now than later.

My granddaughter had the lip and tongue tie. It was surgically corrected when she was a few months old and has done so much better!

I worked with a woman, her new born baby girl was born tongue tie she had it fixed, did a lot of research and ended up her & her husband got it done as well. She showed me before pictures & after big difference in her face and everything!

My daughter had this too. She was never able to breastfeed. She outgrew it as the pediatrician said she would.

Pediatric ENT took care of my daughters tongue tie at 2 weeks she grew out of the lip tie over time

My son was born tongue tied. The pediatrician took care of it when he was a day old. Now he has a cute heart shaped tongue. The pediatrician advised doing it right away so it would never be a issue.

It needs to be fixed. The baby may not gain weight and have tooth decay later. Your pediatrician will know what to do.

Get it done asap! Its just alittle snip and they r fine. My son was tongue tied tip of tonge attached to his bottom gums by a thin piece of skin. His 6 day check up the dr noticed it but she wouldn’t do anything about it said he woukd be ok with it. Spoke with lactation consultant immediately after and she said that’s what the problem was why he wasnt latching on. He was a month old b4 i could get him into another dr and it took 2 sec and he was done dr snipped it with sissors my son wimpered once and that was it. But because it took so long he never was able to latch on. I was mad at hospital for not catching it and mad at the dr who did catch it cuz she wouldnt do anything. His top gums were attached to his top lip same way found out by dentist at 6months i think (that actually took 2 stitches) and he still is tongue tied under his tongue. Runs in my mom’s side of family. My great aunt said her son and grandson was the same way plus my mom is tongue tied under her tongue.

Why is your midwife not advising you!
It’s best to get it sorted now while nice and young and baby will heal quickly xxx

You can have it fixed surgically and also get her speech therapy later on if you notice anything…my sister was born with the cleft lip and tongue tied, pretty sure she had tubes put in her ears as well, and my parents got the little piece of skin under her tongue clipped and put her in speech therapy as soon as she started saying actual words

See an ENT the procedure is called a fremulectomy. They prefer to due it as soon as possible after birth. But dont take advise off here none of us went to medical school including me I was a Medical assistant at an ENT office. Always seek a professional and then you can make an informed decision.

Pediatricians don’t take care of that, dentist office does. It’s better to do it while they are younger.

My son was tongue tied the pediatrician told me as soon as he saw him in the hospital a
A few hours old I was referred to a ent and it took a few minutes to fix

IBCLC will be able to answer that question best.

This something you should have asked your Pediatrician when you found out?

Definitely take care of it now. Be sure to do all suggested excercises afterwards to prevent attachment

Check with your dentist, my son was tongue tied and dentist took care of it. Used a laser.

Simple procedure. Talk to your Dr.

Go to ent and pedi surgeon

See an ENT for tongue tie, they can give you better advice

Depends on severity ask doc

Contact Jeanne Pichoff. She is a specialist in this field. She is in Lafayette.

Get it fixed see if it helps

She will not outgrow it and they should have fixed it in the hospital. All they do is snip it a little and then it is all good. If not she will always have a speech problem. But the lip tie she will outgrow it.

Wish my son was diagnosed sooner for his tongue tie because it hindered his speech. He had the surgery and it was so quick and easy I got to be with him the whole time
