Ok mamas I need some apps free if possible that help kiddos with reading. I’ve been practicing at home but with life it gets hectic. My daughter is in 1st grade and she broke my heart when she told me " 1st grade reading is hard for her. " I want her to thrive not be discouraged already. Please help a momma out
Teach my monster to read and lalio.
Following… my daughter is in 2nd and feels this way. I totally feel like I’m failing her!
Set a specific time every day.
It can be before dinner.
Or before bed.
But it needs to be the same time EVERY DAY bc at that age it’s super important to have a routine.
Have her pick a book.
Set a timer for 20 minutes.
She reads one page out loud to you - one page - then she tells you what is going on so far.
This practices reading comprehension and retention.
Then do it again.
And again.
She will absolutely start getting better - but you have to be consistent, every day.
When she wants to move to harder books - let her.
You can move the timer to thirty minutes as she progresses. Eventually she wont need to read out loud.
I tutored kids doing this - they went from Fs to As in a month.
Starfall helped my kids. It’s free but there’s also a premium version
Read to and with your kids every night they will learn especially if they enjoy the topic.
Is there anything you notice her specifically struggling with within the reading? My little guy whose now is 3 rd grade still struggles sometime and I’ve got my theories based on his learning and struggles!!! It’s not always that they can’t or don’t want to sometimes there’s a bigger reason!!!
Check her eyesight and have her checked for dyslexia, and other learning disabilities. I found out at 33 about being dyslexic, I could read knew my letters but struggled. For me I have always switched letters around and pulled words from other lines. If there is an issue the sooner it is diagnosed the sooner she learns how to work with the issue.
Check eyes. My daughter struggled with reading in 1st grade. She had a convergence problem . Meaning her eyes wouldn’t focus enough to see the little words so she skipped over them . Easily correctable
Mine too, but it’s normal to struggle in first grade because kids are still learning phonics. English is also one of the hardest languages to learn
Don’t panic! Mine is in 2nd and she’s catching up. ABC Mouse is great!
Read every night it helps alot!
See if her school offers a iep she will get the help she needs my kids have one cause of the reading
Alphablocks is a great show!
Have her eyesight checked. Find out if she may be dyslexic or has any other learning disabilities that may be causing her to struggle with reading.
Look into bob books and have her sound out the letter of each word. Bob “Buh Ahh Buh” bob
That’s how my kids learned in preschool at a Montessori school!
Take a month break from it and just spend time reading to her every day. Then start again. If it is still hard take another break. Mine son struggled and we took the breaks. I wanted it to be fun and not stressful. We literally spent 1/2 a year focusing on reading after it got easier. He is now reading 2+ grade levels ahead. We used the Bobs books from the library (these gave him so much confidence). We also bought the fidget game-sight words and it was a game changer. He actually wanted to learn the words and was excited to read when he wasn’t struggling any more. We have since bought other flash cards and use the same game for math and Spanish. Also, when he would learn specific words, I would read and he would read the words he knew.
Things that helped my son: always watch TV with closed caption, the shows alphablocks and word world made a HUGE difference in my son’s reading! The shows really help with phonics & they didn’t even realize it’s teaching them because the shows are so cute!
Ask the school what help they can provide in terms of remedial reading help. And check out eyesight, dyslexia etc. as others have mentioned.
I’d have my son read a page then I’d read a page so he wouldn’t get too frustrated. Also teachers suggested books on tape while he followed in the book. You could record yourself reading books if audiobooks for kids aren’t available.
If possible, take advantage of library programs. It’s a fun place for other things as well as reading so maybe she’ll associate the library with fun and the books & reading are a bonus.
One of the best things that led to my son “putting words together “ was a show called WordWorld it used to be on PBS but now you can find it on YouTube. Very cute. It really was a big part in him being an early reader. Check it out.
Reading eggs was great when my kids started reading.
Listen to her reading. Help her sound out words she’s struggling with and look for shapes of words. Alphablocks Magic E is a great episode to explain how it changes the vowel sound to the letter sound fat becomes fate for example. Anything that reads to you while you follow the text is great too (including you reading!) Mine had a load of SpongeBob storybooks and cartridges.
I can recommend ABC MOUSE it did wonders!! It’s worth it
Special education teacher here. It’s possible that she may have a learning disability. It is also possible that she isn’t developmentally ready yet for reading in which case it is going to be hard. Sometimes it just takes awhile for it all to click. One of my children really struggled to learn to read. She had an August birthday, so she was younger. She came back from winter break, and it all just clicked for her. Keep working with her using some of the suggestions but don’t push too hard.
My son is in 3rd and has trouble reading but he has found the books by Thomas Flintham fun and likes reading them
My son is in second grade and he struggles he can do it but it does take him awhile he doesn’t like it because it’s hard I just got some of the beginner learning books And make sure I have him sit with me for at 20 mins a night reading. I think once they get the basics it will become easier it’s just getting started
Hooked on phonics only charges like $9 a month
Read to her every night and get her to help you read
She will pick it up
In her own time
Does she have a home reader
here in Australia most first graders are given a home reader book which they can practise with at home
In front of their parents
The parent then signs it each day
Our kids learn to sound out the words
I would be more concerned if not able to read by yr 4
Test for dyslexia, over 30 types. My son could not read numbers, I skip lines, With Grand bought her many simple books at Salvation Army for .15-.25 cents. Same book at stores were over $7. Simple, repetitive books, relaxed reading, check for dyslexia. After couple weeks something clicked. She read 50 simple books that weekend then went on to harder books. Always check thrift stores for books
