My daughter still wets the bed... advice?

My daughter is 11. She pees in the bed. I have taken her to the doctor about it & the doctor says it’s something she’s just going to have to outgrow. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can use for her mattress? I use a mattress protector but she still pees through it. She wants a new bed but I’m worried about getting something else that’s just going to be peed on. She has autism & sensory disorder so she will not wear diapers to bed. Husband fusses all the time about it

Sounds like you need new ones. Mattress protectors need to be replaced over time or if they’ve been put in the dryer as they start to break down just enough that they’re no longer waterproof.
Double make the bed too, it helps during the night. Mattress protector/sheet + protector/sheet over the top of that then the blanket. You can then just take the top layer off to fresh sheets instead of having to make the whole bed with a kid who is half asleep. Kids do grow out of it, some just tend to take a little while.

I would get a second opinion from a different doctor.

The doctor is right…and is he having to clean it up if not why is he complaining so much it doesn’t affect him

I’d get a second opinion. Did you just see a pediatrician about this? Maybe they should refer you to a pediatric urologist?

She may have a overactive bladder same as my son he 6 and still wet bed I get dog training pads to put under sheet as he won’t wear pull up either

My little sister had an issue with this as well the dr prescribed something for her to take an hr before bed and it helped alot. I can’t remember what it was

Perhaps try period panties? They won’t hold as much as say a pull up but it might just help enough that it doesn’t go through the mattress pad. Then on the mattress put a zippered waterproof cover, a reusable/washable chux pad on top of that and a couple disposable pads then the fitted sheet. On top of the sheet another washable chux pad -they make some that are about the size of a twin bed so hopefully she doesn’t move it but even if she does there’s plenty of protection under the sheet so the new mattress doesn’t get ruined.

My son is about to turn 13 on sat. He still has this issue sometimes Dr said same thing. It’s his responsibility to clean it up if/when it happens
Ive tried cutting off drinks at like 630 still has this problem sometimes. It has gotten alot better so it may just take her a little more time. He’s just now feeling comfortable enough to spend the night with a friend

I think that’s terrible of your Gp, she may have any number of bladder issues so definitely go back and see another dr!!

There’s lots of great sites to but specialist sheets etc that are also discreet, I think Brolly kids is one , get a new mattress if you can but if not put baking soda and baby talk over the wet patch, let it dry then hoover up, works a treat xxx

She might have bladder spasms that occur mostly at night and there is a prescription that may help. Ask your Dr about it, and also request ultrasound of her kidneys. Hope this helps, my 3yr grandson has one kidney function of 24% and his other is 100% so he sees Urology and Nephrology 4 times a year, so ultrasounds are important, and sometimes we have to ask because Dr’s may not suggest it, no matter how many times we complain to them about certain issues.:white_heart:

The first thing that I would do is get a second opinion.

It may very well be that nothing is wrong and it’s just something that she will have to grow out of, but it also may be something that needs addressed.

Aside from that, buy her a new bed and put a mattress cover on it - the plastic kind that zip up the whole way around the mattress. Then put a mattress topper overtop of that so that she isn’t laying directly on the plastic.

This way, you can wash the sheets and the mattress pad, but it won’t damage the mattress.

I know it’s hard Mom, probably harder on her than anyone. She will outgrow it. I come from a long line of bed-wetters and didn’t stop until I was 13. Some of my grandchildren suffered the same issue. The best explanation I’ve heard is that the child sleeps so hard that the brain does not receive the signals the full bladder sends. Shaming is never helpful, I was “smelly melly” after my brother told his friends. The hospital grade waterproof pads are washable and are made for frequent laundering. Hang in there mama, it WILL get better

Will she wear underwear to bed? Get her period panties- it might help with the bulk of it. You can use disposable pads under her sheet as well as under her waterproof mattress pad- which should prevent the mattress getting wet- they also have washable pads for incontinence- and you can use the same way—- they work exceptionally well

I’d make sure she doesn’t have mega colon which is from chronic constipation. Look up Steve Hodges website more information. Chronic constipation can cause pressure on ureters. Or even checking her bladder / kidneys.

You can try bed pads to go on top of her sheets, but still use a mattress protector! They sell disposable ones, or reusable ones.
I would also look into getting a second opinion

Back in the day we used imipramine (sp?) and good nights

I seen two cases where bedwetting was virtually eliminated once allergies were diagnosed. One was a tomato allergy and one was a corn allergy.

Don’t make a big deal about it . Or make her feel bad about wetting the bed . She will out grow it . You can also get her into counseling so that you can make sure there’s nothing else going on. Not to be nosy but is she in one home .or does s g e go back and forth between mom and dad’s house.?

It may be a psychological problem. Specially since she has autism. Give her time to outgrow it. Some kids pee in the bed until they are 25 years old. Don’t scold her. It only adds to the problem

Have you tried an alarm? They are made to wake the child when the sensor detects moisture . Sometimes children sleep to deep. You cc. find a list of bladder irritants online. I was told that if mom or dad had that problem the could have it Never shame her or punish her.
My grandson just out grew this around 7

Try one of these! I came across them when I was trying to find something for my autistic son’s bed. Or search Amazon for waterproof massage sheets

I have a plastic allergen zippered mattress protector on my kids bed, so I can wipe it down with a towel, clorox wipe, then Lysol.

There’s limiting drinks after a certain hour or even waking her up at 10/11 or before you go to bed and taking her to the bathroom.
It’s not ideal, but it will help her body become use to getting up.

We use doggie pee pads under the fitted sheet on top of the mattress cover.

Go to a medical supply store (or even online) and get some washable bed pads like nursing homes use.

Put her in a goodnight. And then when she wakes up dry you celebrate if she wakes up wet you say no big deal. That way clean up is easy

Use pull ups at night, Washable/reusable bed pads and a mattress protector. Look for water proof mattress protecter and use the bed pad over the sheets just in case can also put an incontinence pad in the pull up or diaper for absorption.

Would use diapers at night only

Mattress pee pads and overnight undetwear for kids. It’s a large pull up for night time.

Try D-MANNOSE
IT MIGHT WORK

Ask her doctor about medication called Desmopresson. My daughter has the same issue at 12 without autism and that medication was a lifesaver

Do u have an ndis plan? Things like aids or a kylee, should be covered!

I would get a second opinion especially if your pediatrician didn’t suggest seeing a specialist to rule out kidney, bladder or any other specific issues… but until then, I would suggest a plastic fitted mattress cover with pee pads on top then the fitted sheet. Plastic will protect the mattress, pee pads will absorb some of it so she isn’t dripping in pee. Some kids sleep hard and pee the bed and eventually grow out of it, but most of the time at around this age there is a medical or psychological reason. If your pediatrician doesn’t want to check every avenue before declaring she will grow out of it, then you need a second opinion.

Definitely a plastic protector. However, if you’re for sure there’s no medical reason or developmental reason, I’d definitely say no new bed until you stop wetting. I have a close friend who’s son wet the bed age 10 out of pure laziness. She got multiple opinions to make sure and it was def laziness. She took his bed completely away and laid plastic on floor with very very cheap sheets.he stopped wetting the bed in 3 days. He was told if it starts again he will again lose his bed, he’s 19 now but never did again. Again this would only be an extreme option if you’re for SURE there’s not an underlying reason

Definitely get a medical opinion on it. While you wait for the medical opinion, look for a waterproof mattress pad, if any available, in the meantime.

Time for a urologist and maybe a sleep study.

Ask doctor to prescribe DDAVP. It helped my son tremendously!

Prayers for your daughter    :heartpulse: :heartbeat: :two_hearts:

Ask her doctor about medicine for it. My son had to take the medicine at bed every night but it literally helped the first night. No accidents at all. After about 9 months after starting we took him off and he hasn’t had the problem since. If his doctor says no then find a doctor that will. It’s called desmopressin. It makes it so they don’t sleep so hard and helps the body wake them up before they actually go.

I know people hate hearing this but maybe take her to a counselor, she may be being abused, yes even if her dad is the only one around her

Wake her up before you go to bed to go to the bathroom and wake her up early to go. There are many types of incontinence products available even a device that collects urine such as The PureWick™ System, also she will need to get used to pads for when she starts her period. She may need to work with a therapist to overcome the sensitivity issues.

Would consider a urologist at that age

Does she have problems with constipation? That can cause this as well. Has she seen a specialist? Maybe get a second opinion on this and see a GI if she hasn’t.

Get her to a urologist. My friend has several kids that sleep deeply and have wet the bed til a later age, yet one of her kids has an actual bladder issue so maybe get a second opinion.

My child did this for years. She still occasionally has accidents and she’s 16. She sleeps so hard at night. Docs said she is just gonna have to outgrow it. We got her some depends and she wears them every night (whether she needs to or not). We have gotten a 2nd opinion too. My dad had accidents until he was almost 18. I think it’s just hereditary

Peeing the bed is a sign of trauma… is she mild or severe austistc?

I had a lot of bladder issues as a child and was a bed wetter. It wasn’t until I was older that I found out that I had a small bladder and didn’t empty it all the way. My mom stopped my liquids after a certain time at night and I had to go to the bathroom before I went to bed.
My mattress had a plastic cover on it and a pad that was used in baby cribs between the fitted sheet and mattress pad. Depends makes some really good disposable bed pads that you can put.
